Robinsons Motel
Dee swabs the inside of Willow's cheek in full view of Sonya and then takes the sample into the bathroom with her while she washes her hands. Sonya thanks Willow for going along with the test and is genuinely sorry for causing anguish for the girl, but Willow says she didn't really have a choice. Dee packs up the sample with the rest of the paternity kit and gives it to Sonya to take home.
Police Station
The vibe is still terse between Steph and Mark when Steph calls by to ask for his car keys to search for her missing bike keys. Steph throws an awkward smile Ellen's way before leaving. Ellen has a chitchat with Mark, asking him when he was going to tell her about his engagement with Steph. When Mark realises Victoria has been speaking to her ex about his relationship, he asks Ellen to pass along the message to Victoria to stay out of his private life.
Lassiter's Complex
Steph looks in Mark's car and finds her bike keys in the glove box. She also finds Sonya's missing earring on the passenger seat.
Number 30
Toadie isn't impressed to say the least when he finds out Sonya went to Dee for a paternity test. Sonya understands why he's upset but says she couldn't get it out of her head until it was done - and besides, Dee had already bought the test. Toadie swabs the inside of his cheek and Sonya says she'll send it off and they'll get the results in 48 hours. She also says it'll give them a chance to sort out Mark and Steph's dramas because "this baby needs two parents" (as the camera so subtly focuses on Nellyfish). Toadie says he'll chat with Steph later; right now he's off to meet Willow properly. Sonya thinks Toadie should wait until they find out the results, but off Toadie's hurt/angry look Sonya reneges and says he should go.
Harold's Café
Ned finds Father Jack lunching with four old ladies from the church and lets him know there's a leak in the church roof. Jack says he's busy at the moment so Ned says he'll get Amy to help him. One of the old ladies takes a shine to "bad boy" Ned when she finds out he's doing community service and Elly teases Ned about his new fan club. Paige emerges from the kitchen where she's been putting together a care package for the Rebecchis and Elly starts to gossip about Toadie's "lovechild" (that she heard about from Susan). Paige gets shirty with Elly when she bangs on about Dee keeping the kid a secret from Toadie and tells her she has no idea what she's on about.
Robinsons Motel
Dee takes a deep breath and gives Willow a pat on the knee before opening the door to Toadie. He tells them he's cleared his whole day to hang out with them, "it's not every day a terrifying teenager blows into your life" (if you listen closely you can hear Karl and Susan laugh manically in the background from #28, the home of waifs and strays). Dee makes them all some tea while Toadie and Willow acknowledge how awkward the whole situation is for them.
TOADIE: I've got to be honest. I've got no idea how to start navigating this. So I'm kind of hoping you'll be able to help out there because, well, I'd like to get to know you.
WILLOW: What about the paternity test?
(Dee facepalms in the background)
TOADIE: (smiling) What about it?
(Dee's visibly relieved)
TOADIE: What do you say? Do you want to give this a go? (Willow nods) Cool.
Number 30
Karl is doing his best to lend an ear to Sonya while she expresses her concerns about Toadie meeting up with Willow. Sonya's feeling quite unsettled about the state of her family tree.
SONYA: A few months ago I knew what the tree looked like. There were a few thorny branches there were tangles... But I mean if this test result is positive then there's just this whole other branch growing out the side of the tree. And it's not just Willow it's Dee.
KARL: She's always been part of Toadie's history.
SONYA: Yeah I know but if this is true, and Willow is his daughter, then she's not just his first love anymore is she? And I'm carrying another man's baby.
Before they can continue their chat, Steph arrives home, quite unsettled herself. Karl leaves, letting Sonya know that he and Susan are next door If she needs them. Steph paints on a smile and tells Sonya she found the missing earring in Mark's car. Sonya confirms to Steph that it must've been last Wednesday when Mark was consoling her about Dee's shocking return. Sonya asks how Steph and Mark are faring and offers to talk to Mark herself, but Steph 'smiles' and says: "Please don't. If me and Mark are going to work things out it really needs to come from me."
Robinsons Motel
Toadie's telling Dee and Willow all about Nell and Callum while they look at photos of them on his phone. Dee shares a story about Willow taking her own training wheels off her bike when she was four and that she'd like to fly planes for a living (a nice nod to Ryan Moloney's real life passion). Willow remains quiet and Dee apologises - Willow's still angry about Dee keeping Toadie a secret from her. Toadie suggests that he and Willow go for a walk and get to know one another more, if she's comfortable with that of course. Dee encourages her daughter to go and Willow retrieves her purse from the bathroom.
DEE: You don't think we're forcing it?
TOADIE: She doesn't seem like the type to do anything she doesn't want to do. (Willow re-emerges) You ready, Captain? Sorry, bad dad joke.
Toadie and Willow head out leaving Dee looking apprehensive.
Harold's Café
Elly apologies to Paige for being insensitive earlier and says her abrupt behaviour is probably why she doesn't have any girlfriends to hang out with. Paige apologises as well for snapping, she just feels all over the place lately.
ELLY: I had a miscarriage when I first moved here. So I don't really know what it's like but I can imagine.
PAIGE: I'm so sorry I had no idea.
ELLY: The father was my ex, a majorly toxic Bondi bachelor. Would've been impossible to co-parent with. But you, you're lucky! As far as accidental baby-daddies go you have struck gold with David. He's successful, he's funny, he's gorgeous and he's not a psycho!
Paige smiles and laughs uncomfortably before telling Elly that she needs to get back out to the customers. Elly says to Paige that she'd really like to start hanging out more, "try the whole girlfriend thing?" Paige looks pleased and says that'd be nice.
Lassiter's Lake/Number 30
Toadie and Willow attempt to skip stones across the lake while they chat about Willow's pilot aspirations. Willow says she wants to be a fighter pilot because there's never been a female one in Australia before. The job's been open to women since 1987 but no one's got there yet. Willow says she's going to be the first and Toadie gets a small, proud smile on his face.
Sonya's sitting on her bed with Nell while she takes a work call and Nell plays on the iPad. Sonya has to hang up from her call when she starts to get a nosebleed and she asks Nellyfish to grab her some tissues from the bathroom.
Willow tells Toadie that she likes the idea of having "a purpose, a goal", just as Toadie gets a call from Sonya. But Toadie can tell he's making progress with Willow and chooses not to answer the phone.
TOADIE: Sorry, you were saying? You like having a purpose and a goal...
WILLOW: (surprised) You were listening?
TOADIE: Yeah of course! You're going to be Australia's first female fighter pilot; if I don't listen I'm dead.
Willow chuckles and Toadie looks touched that they've had a nice moment.
Police Station
Steph asks Mark if they can have a word and Ellen scurries away to give them space. Steph says they need to be completely honest with one another and admits that when Mark cancelled their engagement lunch she spent time drinking and chatting with Victoria. Steph realises she may have given Victoria the wrong idea but wasn't really thinking straight because Mark had just stood her up. Mark gets on his high horse about work being important, but Steph's like 'whoa nelly' and pulls the reins on him being a stubborn mule.
STEPH: You didn't cancel on me because of work; you cancelled on me so you could go for a drive with Sonya. I found her earring in your car. You stood me up so that you could go and look after her, didn't you?
MARK: She's my friend. She's carrying our baby.
STEPH: She has a husband. It is his job to make her feel better, not yours.
Right on cue, Sonya's name pops up on the caller ID of Mark's phone. Steph just throws her hands up like, 'of course it's Sonya!' and tells him to just take the call. Mark answers and attempts to tell Sonya that now's a bad time to chat, but Sonya's obviously quite harried on the end of the line and he can't hang up. While Mark's preoccupied Steph takes off her engagement ring and leaves it on the counter for him to find.
Harold's Café
Jack pays for the group's meal and has a chat with Paige about enjoying his time with the ladies who lunch. He sees the Rebecchis' care package and they broach the topic of Toadie's lovechild (how did everyone find out so quickly? Did Amy 'I love to spill secrets about babies' Williams put it on Snapchat?).
PAIGE: It's pretty surreal finding out you're a dad like that.
JACK: Absolutely but every child is a miracle in their own way no matter how they came to be.
PAIGE: So you think this is a good thing for Toadie?
JACK: Of course. Being a father is an absolute gift.
Paige's face is like, '... oh damn'.
Number 28
Karl helps Sonya out with her nosebleed while little Nelly looks on. Mark appears through the door and asks if Sonya's got on to Toadie but she says not yet. Because Mark has read every baby book known to mankind he lets Sonya know that nosebleeds are pretty common during pregnancy. Mark, buddy, I'm 100% sure DOCTOR Karl has that covered. Karl takes Nell with him to find a cold compress while Mark sits down next to Sonya. She apologises for dragging him out of work but Mark's just glad her and the baby are OK. Sonya knows he and Steph are going through some problems but they can't break up, "this baby needs parents that are together". To stop Sonya from stressing further, Mark lies and says he and Steph are going through a rough patch but they'll sort it out. He brings Sonya in for a hug.
Harold's Café
David pops into the kitchen to chat to Paige about baby names but stops when he realises Paige has been crying. He apologises for overstepping any boundaries but Paige says he's been amazing. Toadie's situation with his daughter has just got her thinking she's doing the same thing to her baby's father. David says that Dee had her reasons (seriously, did Tim make this front page news of the paper or something?).
DAVID: So did my mum. And so do you. Maybe in a few months it'll be the right time to tell the father.
PAIGE: A few months isn't going to change anything.
DAVID: I know you said that the guy won't ever be in the picture, but can you at least tell me why?
PAIGE: He's... he's married. And he loves the person that he's married to. I wanted him to leave and be with me but now I've realised that would never have worked. And if I told him about the baby it would absolutely destroy everything for him. I almost ruined everything once, and I won't do it again.
Robinsons Motel
Dee practically leaps on Willow when she returns home and is extremely relieved the outing with Toadie went well. Strap in folks, because here's where things get wild.
WILLOW: He really thinks he's my dad.
DEE: I know, he's a great guy.
WILLOW: If you really think that then how can you still want to do this to him?
DEE: Hey, sweetie, this is about me and you. This isn't about him.
WILLOW: It was bad enough faking your DNA now you're lying and making him think he has a teenage daughter. And using Nell like that?
'Dee' says she didn't want to involve Nell but when Toadie came in and saw Willow she panicked. 'Dee' explains that the people at Nell's childcare centre knew her when she went with Sonya, so it was easy to walk back in with Nell's toy and get a mouth swab from Nell in the bathroom: "I made it like a game! All I had to do was swap the samples!" 'Dee' chuckles and says she swapped Willow's DNA sample with Nell's when she went into the motel bathroom and Sonya was none the wiser.
DEE: As soon as we get this money, as soon as we get the inheritance, sweetie, we are out of here. The Rebecchis...
WILLOW: You really think Toadie's just going to let us leave once you get your money?
DEE: Yeah I do. He's got his own family to take care of.
WILLOW: He's going to figure it out. I'm fifteen; I'm at least two years older than any kid of his should be.
DEE: And you are smart. You're a lot smarter than me. You can play younger for a couple of weeks.
WILLOW: (angry) It's wrong.
DEE: (upset) Willow, the only thing that is wrong is that I can't give you the opportunity to live your dreams. It's just you and me, baby. Please? Just give me the opportunity to give you what you deserve.
WILLOW: Whatever you say... Andrea.
Call up the White House; we got some serious alternative facts going on here.
