We pick up right where we left off. Steph and Sonya's conversation is interrupted by Nell who wants to show her something, but Steph continues to talk - saying that Sonya taking the morning after pill would be the best option for all of them.
SONYA: I told you right from the beginning that I wouldn't be comfortable with something like that.
STEPH: If we act now, we can do something about it.
SONYA: See, we've already acted.
STEPH: Really - I thought I was okay with this. But the truth is, if you go through with this, there are always gonna be four of us in this relationship. Is that what we really want?
Sonya prevaricates, saying they don't know if the cycle has worked yet. But Steph points out that it will just get harder the longer they wait.
STEPH: Sonya, please. I can't do this.
Cue titles.
Harold's Café
Aaron is concerned when Amy tells him she's asked Leo out.
AARON: I thought you were done with guys like this.
Amy defends Leo, saying he cares about his family deep down - including Kazuko, despite their tensions on the surface.
AARON: Sometimes what you think is depth is just a trick of the light.
David comes in and offers to buy drinks for Amy and Aaron, but Aaron says they're fine - there's awkwardness between the two. Amy asks how the search for David's father is going. He explains that Kazuko shut him down when he asked again. Amy encourages him to keep trying with her.
Once David's out of earshot, Aaron wonders aloud why David is suddenly making an effort with him again.
Brad comes in, home from his search for Ned. Lauren asks how it went.
BRAD: No-one's seen him. It's like he's dropped off the face of the earth.
Brad says he's going to ask Toadie to be a stand-in best man. He explains he had planned for the groomsmen to surprise Lauren with a dance at the ceremony. But Lauren says she's the bride, and wants to be in on the dance too! Lauren asks if Brad has spoken to Paige yet - he clearly hasn't...
Eden University
Brad is giving Paige a telling off for taking her concerns about the Church's involvement in Blaze to the council - saying it wasn't her call to make. He implies that Paige only let it happen in order to make a point to Jack.
PAIGE: This is not about me and Jack. It's about ethics.
BRAD: Oh, is it? (!)
Paige admits she hasn't always been honest about her motivations for being involved with Blaze, but says that's in the past.
PAIGE: I truly believe that Blaze has an obligation to the community. And right now, the Church is getting in the way of that. I want to help as many kids as I can (...) Blaze shouldn't have to turn away from issues or sweep things under the carpet because the Church doesn't approve.
BRAD: I have never seen evidence of that. Jack is always going out of his way to make people feel welcome. He is liked, and he is respected.
PAIGE: It's a bigger picture than that. It's about the culture of the place.
BRAD: The council likes that the Church is involved. That is one of the main reasons we got that space in the first place. If we cut our ties with them, that could be the end of the programme forever.
Paige goes off to class, telling Brad it will be fine. But he seems unconvinced.
Lassiter's Complex
Leo is asking David if Elly can stay with them for a while, as she needs somewhere to live. He seems surprised that David is 'cool' with it.
Amy turns up, and they discuss their date - Amy has the pick of what they do this time, so she announces that they're going to have afternoon tea with Kazuko!
LEO: In the history of bad ideas, I think that's right up there with grabbing cheap tickets on the Titanic (...) You realise she actually hates me?
AMY: Am I driving, or are you?
Leo reluctantly agrees, and they head to the hospital.
Erinsborough Hospital
Amy is sitting talking to Kazuko about Grant Denyer, while Leo sits in a chair at the other side of the room, looking left out. Kazuko opines how lucky Grant Denyer's wife is.
KAZUKO: But I don't think you will be so lucky with this one.
AMY: ... Err, we're not actually together.
KAZUKO: Oh, well. I know David likes you. Such a lovely boy.
LEO: You know I can hear you, right?
Kazuko simply responds by demanding that Leo make her a cup of tea!
KAZUKO: Not too scalding hot. Eighty degrees. Otherwise it gets bitter.
LEO: Wouldn't want any bitterness (!)
Once he's gone...
KAZUKO: Leo is not worthy of you. He's 'nezumi'. Just like his father!
AMY: ... What is he like? Their dad?
KAZUKO: Excuse me?
AMY: Well, you seem pretty hard on Leo because he's like his dad. But you won't tell him who he is. Let him see for himself.
KAZUKO: What difference will it make now?
AMY: Not having a dad, it can make you feel somehow - not worthwhile. It can affect your behaviour, the choices you make.
KAZUKO: He doesn't care like you.
AMY: He cares more than he lets on.
Amy reveals that Leo has been the one doing all the cooking for Kazuko - David just delivers it to the hospital.
AMY: Meeting their dad - it might not change anything. But it could also change everything. Just think about it.
Erinsborough Police Station
Steph turns up to see Mark at work. He explains he's had a call from Sonya, who's pretty upset.
STEPH: Well, that makes two of us.
Mark's annoyed that Steph talked to Sonya before they'd had chance to discuss it properly themselves - adding that they all knew the surrogacy would be complicated.
STEPH: This is not just about a baby. This is about us - it's about Toad and Sonya. We've all got so much to lose.
MARK: I know.
STEPH: Look, I - I can't do it. I know I said I'd try and push through but I just can't do it.
MARK: No-one's saying you should.
STEPH: Look, we all promised that we'd be honest, right? So one out, all out - it's what we agreed, yeah?
MARK: ... We did. If you feel as if you can't go ahead, then... we need to stop.
They hug, but Mark looks disappointed.
Lassiter's Complex
Toadie turns up having had a call from Sonya, explaining what's happened. He says he's spoken to Steph too, and that Mark is behind her on pulling the plug on the surrogacy - but he doesn't know what Mark's views are about Sonya taking the morning-after pill for the first cycle.
Sonya says she knows it's their prerogative, but isn't comfortable taking the pill. Toadie says nothing's been decided until they all discuss it together later on. Sonya rushes off for a council meeting about Blaze Outreach.
Erinsborough Hospital
Amy and Leo are leaving. Amy acknowledges that Kazuko doesn't like Leo very much! She asks after the word she called him - 'nezumi' - and Leo explains that it means 'rat' in Japanese. He says that she compares him to his father a lot, given how he abandoned their mother with two newborn babies.
AMY: Have you ever thought that maybe it's just she doesn't know you as well?
LEO: She doesn't want to know me. David's her favourite. End of story.
Amy suggests they move on to part two of their date - that timeless classic, off-screen paintballing.
LEO: You want go paintballing with me?!
AMY: Not with you. Against you. Are you in?
LEO: Game on!
Outside the Community Centre
Brad is mediating between Jack and Paige, trying to encourage them to find a compromise regarding Blaze Outreach. Paige isn't in a compromising mood, telling Brad that she's done her research and her arguments are sound.
JACK: What about the argument that we're better off together.
PAIGE: That time's passed.
Jack says that if the council decides the Church should withdraw from the project, he won't oppose it. Brad continues to plead for them to compromise; however, at that moment Sonya emerges, and invites them indoors to make their cases.
Harold's Café
Steph is in the kitchen, chatting about the surrogacy to Lauren, who is making sympathetic noises. Lauren says that if Steph's uncomfortable, she was right to speak up. Steph explains that Sonya has a really strong moral stance against taking the morning after pill - but Lauren points out that the risks of going ahead could be worse.
STEPH: I just really hope that this doesn't destroy our friendship.
LAUREN: All you can do is be honest about how you feel.
Ramsay Street
Mark is telling Aaron and Tyler about how Steph has pulled out of the surrogacy - he's struggling to know what to say to Toadie and Sonya later. Tyler reveals that his ex-girlfriend Courtney once took the morning-after pill, and says she 'had a pretty bad reaction' to it. Mark says that Sonya has already said she won't take it.
TYLER: Well, Steph doesn't have the right to force her.
AARON: Not really the main issue here.
TYLER: What is?
AARON: Well, Sonya could already be pregnant. With your baby. I mean, Steph's already got kids. But Mark, this could be your first. How do you feel about it?
TYLER: Steph's said what she wants - what about you, bro? What do you want?
Lassiter's Complex
David again greets Aaron enthusiastically, and Aaron asks what's going on - given that he's been biting his head off all week up until now.
DAVID: I spoke to Jack.
AARON: About what?
DAVID: Just about some things that were bothering me.
AARON: Okay.
DAVID: Anyway, now I've got some clarity. So here I am.
AARON: That's good. I'm glad it helped.
DAVID: It did.
Aaron tells David that his dance moves made it into Angus's video clip, and they both have a laugh about it. Aaron suggests they go back to his place to check out the video. David says he'd love to but that he's off to visit Kazuko, as she's been asking for him.
AARON: Has she got some good news about your dad?
DAVID: It's hard to say. A guy can dream, though, right?
Aaron offers to bring the music video to the hospital later so that David and Kazuko can watch it together. David says it sounds perfect, and agrees to see him there.
No 32
Lauren, Paige and Brad are in the garden. Lauren is telling Brad about Sheila's catering plans for the wedding, but he's too absorbed with the Blaze Outreach debacle to make much response.
Sonya turns up, with Jack lagging behind her. She explains that the council has now deliberated - and that they've decided to resolve the dispute by awarding full control of the outreach building to the Church! Part of the motivation was that the Church will be able to pay full rent, whereas Blaze can't. But Sonya says it's also about experience.
SONYA: It's not that you and Brad aren't valued, but you don't have the same counselling credentials or the reputation that Jack has.
PAIGE: But Sonya - these are people that do not feel comfortable with a Church-run environment. And they still need support.
Sonya says she's going to make extra programmes available at the hospital for those who feel that way, and that Paige can distribute materials at the Community Centre - but that there are no resources for another allocated space. Sonya leaves, and Paige, Brad and Jack all look upset.
No 26
Leo and Amy arrive back from their paintballing session. The banter is flowing between them, and Leo lifts his shirt to show Amy his paintball bruises.
AMY: You know what's really good for that?
LEO: Revenge?
AMY: A spa.
Amy points towards the hot tub, and flirtatiously reveals that no-one else is home.
No 30
Toadie, Mark and Steph are at the dining table while Sonya sits on the sofa, looking upset. Toadie explains that legally, the situation is that any genetic material currently in utero is half Mark's and half Sonya's.
STEPH: Fair enough. But we made a plan. And now we want to end that plan.
TOADIE: The fact is, because you've opted to go this way, the choice is actually Sonya's.
Sonya wants to know how Toadie feels about it; he won't be drawn, simply saying that it's her body and that he will back her decision fully.
STEPH: I'm worried that if you go ahead with this, you guys are gonna be the parents and I am gonna be pushed out of my own family.
SONYA: No. We would never, ever let that happen!
STEPH: You wouldn't mean to. Guys, we had an agreement - one out, all out. If we act now, we can do something about this!
SONYA: Yes, but this was not an accident!
MARK: Okay. I think we all need to agree that we can't do this again.
SONYA: Absolutely! Okay, we stop from this point on.
STEPH: Okay. But what about this cycle?
MARK: Sonya can only do what she's comfortable with.
SONYA: Yeah. And I'm sorry, Steph - I can't do what you're asking me to do.
Ramsay Street
Steph is walking away from the house, upset; Mark follows her.
STEPH: How could you hang me out to dry like that?
MARK: That's not what I was doing. We had an agreement.
STEPH: We have an agreement too! It's called a relationship!
MARK: I know that. But Sonya's given us an egg, and we can never forget that!
STEPH: This is what I keep trying to tell you! We will never get past that!
MARK: Of course we will.
STEPH: You promised me you would be on my side.
MARK: I am!
STEPH: But you weren't in there!
MARK: Steph, look, it's Sonya's baby - it's her call!
STEPH: ...
MARK: I mean, it's our baby. It's her body, is what I meant.
STEPH: It's already happening.
MARK: No it's not - it was a slip of the tongue!
STEPH: Mark, I can't do this.
MARK: You may not have to. Just don't run. Not now. Steph - I love you. We will be okay. We are losing it over something that may not even happen. Come here.
They hug, but both look very worried.
Erinsborough Hospital
David has come to see Kazuko, who seems to be having some difficulty breathing. It becomes clear she summoned him for a reason, saying that he has 'been through so much unhappiness'. She gasps in pain; David tells her not to talk, and tries to put an oxygen mask on her. She resists, desperate to get her words out.
KAZUKO: You need to find a nice girl, to look after you.
DAVID: I will - I will.
KAZUKO: I know you've never been interested in girls. But you have to try. Turn away from the homosexual life. It only bring you unhappiness.
Kazuko is very emotional, but suddenly collapses on the bed. David presses the buzzer frantically and tries to wake her, but she's unresponsive. Nurses rush into the room...
