No. 22 Backyard
Brad remains on one knee, as Lauren is stunned into silence by his proposal.
LAUREN: Why don't we talk about this later?
BRAD: Maybe because I just proposed to you? What, are you saying no?
LAUREN: No, erm, I just don't feel comfortable talking about it in Terese's house. Why don't we go home?
Brad is left looking rejected as Lauren leaves the garden.
No. 32 Backyard
Lauren and Brad return home, and Lauren tries her best to make small talk about groceries in order to avoid discussing Brad's proposal. Brad apologises for springing the question on her and explains that he just felt that it was the right time to ask. He begs her for an answer.
LAUREN: Look, I love you, and I'm honoured and I'm flattered, and I'm incredibly moved by what you did. I mean anybody would be.
BRAD: Okay, enough of the praise, please.
LAUREN: I have to say no.
BRAD: Well can I ask why?
LAUREN: Being with you is incredible. But I've already been married, and I don't feel the need to do it again. I love you, and I'm completely committed to us.
BRAD: Are you? Because you're still wearing your wedding ring.
Lauren admits that it's time she took her ring off as well and does so, telling Brad that she wants to grow old with him; just not as a married couple. Brad becomes awkward and says that he has to find Piper. Lauren looks guiltily at a photo of herself and Brad in the garden room.
Paul instructs Gary to wipe down all of the surfaces that they've touched to avoid leaving fingerprints, as he takes photos of Terese's files. Gary warns Paul that he'll never win Terese's heart if he carries on waging a war with her. Paul puts an end to Gary's backchat and tells him that the only words he wants to hear from him are “yes, Paul”.
Gary blunders out of the hotel lift and bumps into Terese. Gary begins stuttering some nervous conversation and Terese asks if he's okay as he's begun to sweat.
GARY: Do you want to go out sometime?
TERESE: Errr… excuse me?
GARY: No? Okay, figured it was a long shot. See ya.
TERESE: Are you asking me out on a date? In the romantic sense of the word?
GARY: Yeah! Which is why I'm sweating. But you don't want to go, which is fair enough.
TERESE: Sure. Yeah. Okay. How about a drink.
Terese proposes that they meet in the Waterhole in an hour and they part ways, both nervous and excited.
Lauren is asleep in the garden room. The door to the patio slams shut by itself and wakes Lauren with a start. She goes to check if there is anyone in the garden and calls out.
She is startled as a voice responds from behind her… It's the ghost of Matt Turner!
MATT: Hi, hun.
LAUREN: Matt?! What… I mean, how did…
MATT: I miss you.
Lauren presses herself against the door in shock and looks overwhelmed. GhostMatt holds up the photo of her and Brad.
MATT: So, you and Brad? He lives here now?
LAUREN: Yeah. He asked me to marry him.
MATT: And what did you say?
LAUREN: I'm not sure.
MATT: He'll never love you as much as I did.
LAUREN: I know.
GhostMatt approaches Lauren and leans in to kiss her when suddenly there is another bang of the door and Lauren wakes up again. She runs to check the door, which is now closed. GhostMatt is nowhere to be seen, but the photo of her and Brad has been knocked over! Appropriately, the song “Ghost” is playing. It was all a dream. Or was it? These are the questions we must ask when we find ourselves in... the Twilight Zone.
Jack is sat with a young girl and inquires about her mother. He suggests that they get lunch together to cheer her up and she goes to get her bag. Piper approaches, and Jack explains that the girl is called Poppy and that she has Cystic Fibrosis, so he's been looking out for her whilst her mother is also unwell. Piper tells Jack that she tracked him down to the hospital as she wanted to apologise for upsetting him with the video of Paige and Tyler. Piper tries to explain her actions, but Jack interrupts and says that Paige is free to do what she wants. He scolds Piper for trying to get revenge and preaches that if you truly love someone, you should allow them the freedom to be with who they want. He coldly thanks Piper for the apology and leaves her in tears.
Paige bumps into Tyler, and they share their discomfort about the events at the party. Paige ignores a call from Brad and tells Tyler that she needs to distract herself with work. They end up sitting down and discussing Piper's motives, and Paige asks Tyler where all of the day's events leave them. Tyler reminds her that their relationship was supposed to be ‘strings- free' and invites her to catch up in the Waterhole after her shift.
Later, Piper has sought out Paige in the kitchen. Piper asks if Paige is crying, but she points out that she's chopping onions.
PIPER: Have you been crying?
PAIGE: Is that what you want? Did you come here to check?
PIPER: I came here to say I'm sorry.
PIPER: Paige, I wasn't thinking straight.
PAIGE: You're not the only one hurting. Tyler is too. You lied to him, and you treated him like an idiot.
PIPER: You're lying to him now! You're acting like you're over Jack when clearly you aren't!
PAIGE: I never said I was.
PIPER: Well then be with him!
Paige turns around and screams in Piper's face.
PAIGE: You know I can't! That's why I was just trying to get over him.
PIPER: But did you have to get over him by using Tyler? Couldn't you have chosen someone else?
PAIGE: Things just worked out that way. We have history.
PIPER: And that's more important than my feelings?
Paige tells Piper that she's very sorry for upsetting her, but reminds Piper that no one at the party deserved what Piper did.
PAIGE: Until you see that, you will always and forever be a little girl.
Paige goes back to chopping onions, and Piper flees the kitchen in tears.
Brad checks in on Terese, who asks if he should be spending time with his new fiancée. Terese expresses her disdain for Brad's insensitive timing, and he explains that Lauren rejected his proposal. Terese is surprised but coldly reassures Brad that they'll work things out between them. Brad gets into the lift and notices that he has four missed calls from Lauren. He calls someone and asks them if they're free, as he doesn't feel like going home tonight.
Piper calls Tyler over. He gives her the cold shoulder, telling her that she's lucky that he didn't call the police. Tyler rattles off a list of all the times that Piper has tried to sabotage his relationships and humiliate him.
PIPER: Tyler, don't you get it? It's only because I love you.
TYLER: Maybe it's because you're a mental case.
PIPER: Please don't say that.
TYLER: I think I'm allowed to after today. At least the first few times were impulsive, but this was calculated and cold.
Piper tells Tyler that what Paige is doing is worse and she's using him to get over Jack. She says that when you love someone that much, you will never stop loving them, although Tyler disagrees and points out that he's stopped loving Piper. Piper chokes up with tears and warns that Tyler is going to be left devastated if he continues to pursue Paige.
Terese meets Gary for their date but abruptly tells him that she's going to have to cancel as she has so much work. Gary suggests that they reschedule, and Terese gives him an unenthusiastic response that she'll have to think about it. Meanwhile, Tyler approaches Jack at the pool table and gains his blessing to date Paige. They part on good terms, however, Jack looks less sincere as Tyler leaves.
Piper finds Clementine the cat eating a plate of sandwiches in the summer room. She sits down with him and breaks down.
PIPER: Here sits Piper Willis. Despised by her best friends and her sister, her dad, her dad's girlfriend, her mum and by the guy that she loves. And it's all her own fault.
Gary is playing darts, and Paul approaches to tell him that he's got some excellent intel from Terese's strategy file. He says that it's going to be a ‘real honour' to destroy Terese.
GARY: I don't get it. She loves you, you love her. Why don't you stop fighting, and just make a whole lot of little hotels together?
PAUL: Because I can never trust her until I defeat her.
By the pool table, Tyler informs Paige that they have Jack's blessing to be together. At that moment, Jack enters and oversees Paige telling Tyler that she just wants to hang out with him and be herself for once. Jack hides behind the side door as Paige and Tyler leave, and reappears looking suitably devastated about what he's just seen.
Back in the ghostly garden room, Lauren leaves Brad a voicemail asking to call her back. She looks at the photos on her phone and watches a video of Matt, who is stood by the pool.
MATT (on the video): Are we filming now? Lauren, you are the most wonderful wife and partner a man could ever hope to have. I have loved you from the moment you walked into that pub. The best decision I ever made was deciding to walk over and say hello. Happy birthday, sweetheart!
He blows her a kiss and laughs as the video cuts out.
LAUREN: I still feel you here with me, Matt. Part of me still loves you. Always will. Part of me also feels like I moved on too quickly. I love Brad, but…
Suddenly the patio door flies open again! Lauren cries out and shouts at a figure behind the door.
LAUREN: What are you doing here?!
Is this another of Lauren's supernatural dreams, or is she indeed being visited by the ghost of her dead husband? Join us again tomorrow in the fifth dimension, for another instalment of… The Twilight Zone.
