- Karl and Susan confront Nene over her false references, and her manipulation of Doug
- Brodie and Piper rekindle their Canadian romance, but Brodie insists it must be a secret
- Paige becomes increasingly jealous of Steph, and ends up instigating a scrag fight
All smiles in the Willis house as Josh and Brodie arrive back from a successful training session, followed by Brad, who wants to stay and go over Brodie's training programme. Terese says that's fine, and Piper decides to get to work making them all dinner, much to Josh's surprise.
JOSH: Who are you and what have you done with my sister?
PIPER: Oh, ha- ha. Can't I do something nice for my beloved family once in a while?
JOSH: There's a first time for everything.
PIPER: Well, Chas appreciates it.
Piper and Brodie share an awkward glance as she realises she's used her secret name for him. But Brad doesn't seem to react, and says it will be nice for them all to have dinner together.
Steph is drying herself off after being doused by Sheila in The Waterhole, and complains to Mark about Paige having attacked her. She seems to have taken Paige's words to heart and asks Mark if everyone sees her as desperate. He insists not, and says Paige was just lashing out.
As Steph's voice is overlaid, continuing to talk about how humiliated she feels by Paige's attack on her, we see Paige let herself into a darkened, closed Harold's, and sit down looking sad.
MARK: Yeah, Paige can be immature. I don't know what she was thinking. I don't think she even knows.
Paige puts her head in her hands.
Steph is regretting pushing Paige back, but says she just saw red.
STEPH: It's really lucky you were there.
Mark tells Steph to go and get changed, and to put Paige out of her mind.
Lauren turns up, having received a text from Paige. She finds her sitting in the dark, crying, and goes to comfort her.
Paul and Nene are having a coffee. Paul does his ‘I told you so' routine; he knew Nene wasn't up to nursing. He asks her to tell him the real story of what happened in her previous job in Katoomba.
NENE: I mis-medicated a patient. I was involved with this doctor, and he took the rap for me. But the other staff cottoned on, and suddenly, he wasn't on my side anymore.
PAUL: So they fired you.
NENE: He promised to support me. He let me down.
PAUL: Well you know what I think? I think you have shortcomings as a nurse.
NENE: I'm fully trained and capable –
PAUL: You've never been able to hold onto a job!
NENE: If you knew how proud Amy was when I got my degree… Finally, her scatty old mum was making good.
PAUL: This is about her?
NENE: I put her through so much when she was a kid. And now because of a few little slips, she's gonna worry that I'm unstable again.
PAUL: Yeah, but these are more than just little slips.
NENE: What must Amy be thinking? I can't bear to face her right now. Do you think you could tell her how sorry I am?
PAUL: I don't really think it's my place to get involved.
NENE: I don't think you have a choice. You owe me.
PAUL: Alright, enough of the guilt trip. I'll talk to her.
Nene looks emotional, but smiles.
Paige admits to Lauren she's regretting being so hard on Steph – she was just projecting her anger at herself onto Steph. Lauren says Paige shouldn't leap to conclusions about Mark and Steph's relationship.
PAIGE: Why not? It's obvious. She's everything I am and more. She's tough, fun, mature, maternal. Everything that Mark wants in a relationship, that I just can't give him.
Lauren says it's a pointless comparison; Mark wanted Paige back and she said no.
LAUREN: You're you, and you're amazing.
PAIGE: You have to say that.
Paige wishes she could turn back time, so the fight tonight had never happened. Lauren says that the best thing she can do is to apologise.
Brad, Terese, Josh, Piper and Brodie are all enjoying dinner – Imogen having been firmly established as Not In This Episode™, since she's crying her broken heart out in her room. Brad decides to leave to check on Doug, but tells Brodie they're starting his new training regime at 5am tomorrow.
Piper remarks that Josh has found his calling as Brad's coaching assistant, but Josh admits he'd rather be back in the water like Brodie. Brodie says he isn't taking it for granted.
BRODIE: I've been given a second chance, even though I don't deserve it.
PIPER: Hmm. Well then you'd better not waste it.
Piper and Brodie smile knowingly at each other. Brodie says he can feel everything he dreamed of within his reach.
Paul has showed up to intervene on Nene's behalf, and tells Kyle, Amy, Karl and Susan that her heart's in the right place.
SUSAN: Paul, she deliberately tried to confuse Doug!
PAUL: I know, and that is very, very serious. But Nene isn't either callous or evil.
Amy's upset that she didn't see all this coming; Paul explains Nene's been putting up a front, as she didn't want to disappoint Amy again.
AMY: Mum has a history of instability.
Karl admits he knew, but thought Nene was okay now. He recommends a psychiatric evaluation for Nene, and says Amy must try to convince her to have one – otherwise she could be a danger to herself or others.
Paul insists Nene's sorry for what she did, but Karl reminds him again that what she did to Doug was highly unethical. Karl hasn't decided whether to report her yet, but says Brad must be informed of what's been going on, and would be well within his rights to take it further.
In the lounge, Brodie is just getting undressed for bed when Piper comes downstairs.
PIPER: Just needed to get a drink.
BRODIE: It's funny how you couldn't get a glass of water from the bathroom.
They kiss. Piper asks if they'll ever get to be a proper couple, and let everyone know how they feel about each other.
BRODIE: One day.
PIPER: I mean, not that all this sneaking around isn't fun. But it'd be nice to spend some proper time together.
Brodie decides that they should go on a secret date tomorrow. He says he has a surprise in mind, and tells her to be ready when he finishes training – he'll text her telling her where they should meet. They kiss again, and Piper reluctantly drags herself back to bed.
Amy is waiting up for Nene when she comes in – she admits she's been walking the neighbourhood.
AMY: How could you do that to Doug?
NENE: Honestly? I didn't think. I figured, ‘it's just a little white lie – he won't remember it the next day.'
AMY: You took advantage of his Alzheimer's.
NENE: I know. It's just that, in the moment, I was so fixated on impressing Karl.
NENE: I was hoping he would get me a job at the hospital. And then I can stay here permanently.
Amy likes the idea of Nene staying, but still can't understand why she'd do any of this, and mentions what Paul said about Nene putting up a front for Amy. Nene admits she feels like she always disappoints Amy by being in perpetual crisis.
AMY: You need to go to the doctor tomorrow, and talk about getting on meds. Will you do that?
NENE: Of course.
AMY: And I have to warn you, there are gonna be consequences with Brad and Karl.
Mark and Steph are on the sofa together. He decides it's time to go home, and apologises again for what happened with Paige. Steph tells him it's not his fault – just as long as he knows that what Paige said about her isn't true; she isn't just using him as a prop to get Charlie back.
STEPH: I like myself when I'm with you.
MARK: I like you when you're with me too.
They fall into a pash.
MARK: So when do the Rebecchis get back?
STEPH: Not till morning. What are we doing?
MARK: I dunno.
STEPH: We said we wouldn't!
MARK: Wanna stop?
The pashing continues, and they move towards the bedroom.
Morning has broken, and Xanthe is squealing with excitement to learn Piper's news that she and Brodie are going on a date. Lauren emerges from the kitchen with a sandwich and chips, and asks Xanthe to take it to a table – before the chips go cold!
But the moment Lauren's gone, Xanthe starts eating the customer's chips!
XANTHE: They're nowhere near cold yet! Okay, rewind – tell me all the deets.
PIPER: I just gave you all the deets!
XANTHE: Well, what was he wearing?
PIPER: Umm, pyjama bottoms!
XANTHE: Ooh, that is so hot!
PIPER: I know!
XANTHE: And he kissed you, right?
PIPER: Yeah, twice!
XANTHE: This is too much for me to handle! I dunno how you sleep at night knowing that he's just downstairs.
PIPER: I know, I know. It is pretty much torture.
Piper takes a seat and awaits Brodie's text to tell her where they're meeting. Xanthe is guessing at what Brodie has planned for their date.
PIPER: It's the daytime.
Xanthe shrugs and puts a half- eaten chip back on the customer's plate! Piper says she's hoping for something laid back and personal – a trip to a museum or a coffee in a groovy café. Lauren emerges again and grabs the sandwich from Xanthe, delivering it to the customer herself!
Mark is making tea for himself and Steph; it's clear he's spent the night. They kiss, and he goes to have a shower, just as someone knocks at the door. It's Paige.
PAIGE: I come in peace. To apologise.
STEPH: … Alright.
PAIGE: Do you mind if I come in? No fisticuffs, I promise.
Steph lets her in, but says she doesn't have long. Paige admits she was way out of line last night; she'd drunk too much, but it was no excuse.
STEPH: Those things you said about me were really hateful.
PAIGE: The truth is that I was jealous. I guess I'm… still in love with him.
STEPH: I see.
PAIGE: I mean, that's the only reason I overreacted. Broken hearts make you do crazy things, right?
STEPH: Mm- hm. You want him back?
PAIGE: … Yeah. Yeah, I do.
At this point Mark comes in, topless, asking where the towels are. Paige looks horrified.
PAIGE: You two hooked up last night?
Steph walks off, letting them talk alone, but listens from the kitchen.
MARK: Paige, I'm sorry you had to find out like this. But yeah. Yeah, we did. I think it's time that you accepted it and moved on.
PAIGE: I have to go.
Paige leaves, and Mark and Steph look awkward.
Brad and Josh are watching Brodie doing sit- ups from a distance. They're concerned that his swimming times aren't fast enough – but Brad doesn't want to shatter his confidence by telling him. He's having doubts about his coaching abilities, but Josh reminds him that Brodie's been out of the pool for a month – and says he's unfocused.
JOSH: Doesn't matter how fit you are. If your mind's not 100% on the pool, everything else falls apart.
As if to prove Josh's point, Brodie stops doing sit- ups to read a text he's just received. It's from Piper, saying she can't wait to see him. Noticing that Brodie's distracted, Brad goes over and announces that they're going on a 10k run! Brodie is surprised, saying it's not part of the programme they've agreed.
BRAD: Is there somewhere else you need to be?
BRODIE: … Of course not.
BRAD: Then let's do this.
Brad won't even let Brodie send a text, as he wants him totally focused, and tells him to turn off his phone. Brodie complies, and passes his phone to Josh to look after.
Karl and Susan are talking about Nene. Karl is beating himself up about not being more sceptical about Nene. Susan says she told him so, but says it sounds as if he's not the only doctor who fell for Nene's ego- stroking.
Amy comes to join them, having just finished a phone call from Nene, who's gone to see a doctor as agreed. Amy says that Nene is going to discuss medication with the doctor, and says Nene understands the gravity of what she did.
Karl says that, since Nene's seeking medical attention, he won't make a complaint to the nurses' board about her conduct. But he warns Amy again that Brad still needs to be told, and may well decide to take things further himself.
Meanwhile, Piper is looking upset, as she hasn't heard from Brodie. She tells Xanthe that Brodie's stood her up, and leaves.
Lauren is on the patio doing some painting, when Paige emerges, crying again. Lauren goes over to ask her what's happened, but Paige is too tearful to respond. They hug.
Paige is sitting at a table when Mark comes in.
MARK: Hey. How are you?
PAIGE: I'm good… I guess. Look, about earlier…
MARK: No, I'm so sorry.
PAIGE: No, you have nothing to apologise about.
MARK: You didn't need to find out that way.
PAIGE: It was my fault. How were you to know when the Ghost of Fiancées Past was gonna come and jump out at you? I was half expecting you to show up with an AVO, not an apology!
MARK: We're gonna get better at this, you know. Moving in each other's orbits without hurting one another.
They both smile, and Paige says that sounds like a good deal.
MARK: Listen, about Steph…
PAIGE: Look, I was the one who let you go. And I just want you to be happy.
Paige promises to give Mark and Steph space from now on. Mark leaves her to it.
Brodie comes in, apologising to Piper for being ‘the worst secret boyfriend ever'. He explains about the 10k run, and Brad preventing him from using his phone.
BRODIE: I'll make it up to you, okay?
PIPER: Well since it's not happening, what was this amazing date gonna be?
BRODIE: Well, I was gonna keep it low- key. There's this exhibition on new media in The City that I thought you might like. Figured after that we could just wander through the laneways, check out the street art, and maybe grab a coffee. I dunno.
Piper grins at him, admitting it's exactly what she hoped for. Brodie promises they'll do it soon.
BRODIE: Am I forgiven?
PIPER: There's just one more thing that you have to do.
They kiss passionately. But Josh appears from upstairs, catching them in the act!
JOSH: What the hell is going on?!
