Susan tells Karl that Ben doesn't want Toadie to represent him as he doesn't deserve it. Karl goes to talk to Ben but Susan stops him when she sees a note from Ben. Susan reads it, ‘It's better if I just leave. Don't worry about me, I just need some time to get my head together, sorry, Ben.' Karl is prepared to call Ben but Susan reminds him they confiscated his phone. Karl finds Ben's pain relief medication which he's left at home. They rush out to find Ben before the police realise he's gone.
Ben and Piper walk down a street.
Steph tells Toadie about Charlie calling. She's surprised as the parenting order in place says there needs to be written permission before there is any contact, and Max won't allow phone calls as it confuses Charlie. Steph says Charlie sounded really upset and that he missed her. She wonders why he's calling. Toadie says she needs to call Max, but Steph doesn't want to as the last time she did they were in tears and they needed a mediator. She asks if Toadie could call Max and he agrees. Toadie says Vanessa will be here soon and asks if they should postpone, but Steph insists they go ahead with it. She wants to thank her for giving her the job at the garage and explain why she took Paddy. If Vanessa's agreed to see her then she should be willing to hear her out.
Piper tells Ben that his grandparents will probably have read the note by now. Ben thinks they'll be glad he's gone after all the trouble he put them through. Piper says her mum will be wondering where she got to, but with everyone so worried about the baby, they won't know she's gone until the morning. Piper's turned off her phone so they can't track her. Ben thinks they should head north and go someplace where no one knows them. They could stop off at his place in Ballarat and get supplies. He says they should crash in the park for tonight, then get the bus before the sun rises.
Brad gets off the phone, saying he'll tell Piper to check in with Karl and Susan. Lauren arrives and asks if everything is okay. Steph leaves to get changed. As Toadie and Sonya suggest they postpone tonight, there is a knock at the door. It's Vanessa, carrying a box of cupcakes. Vanessa gives Toadie a hug, as Steph comes out and thanks Vanessa for seeing her and they awkwardly make small talk. Vanessa quickly leaving to get drinks when Steph mentions Paddy.
Terese and Brad are shocked to hear that Piper started the fire with Ben. Lauren apologises for not coming to them straight away, she didn't want to make it look like she was interfering. Imogen texts to say that Piper's taken a bag with some clothes and food, it looks like she's gone off with Ben. Brad wants to go off to look for her, and tells Terese and Lauren to stay as they should be there for Josh and Amber when the baby comes out of surgery. Lauren tells Terese that Piper felt terrible.
While Sonya serves dinner, Steph tells Vanessa that she wants to get her own place so Charlie can visit her. Vanessa asks if she's in contact with him, or Adam. Steph accepts that she can't be in Adam's life.
STEPH: I've come a long way. My counsellors were amazing.
VANESSA: So were mine.
STEPH: I can't imagine what I put you through when I took Paddy.
VANESSA: No you can't.
STEPH: Nothing like that will never happen again. I've taken control of my illness, I take my meds. Everything I'm doing is about making amends with the people I've hurt and getting myself well so I can have my kids in my life again.
VANESSA: That's good to hear Steph.
Sonya tells them not to wait for Toadie and they should start eating before it gets cold. Steph apologises for being emotional as Charlie called earlier. Toadie comes through and Steph asks him what Max said. Toadie thinks they should discuss it later, but Steph insists he tell her now. Toadie says that Charlie couldn't have called as he and Max have been watching a movie all afternoon and Charlie hasn't been anywhere near a phone. Steph thinks it must have been Charlie.
Ben offers to give Piper his jacket to keep her warm but she insists she's fine. Piper wonders what will happen if he doesn't turn up for his hearing. She's worried about her mum finding out what she did, about how Piper caused her injuries. Piper hates herself for all the damage they caused and the people they've hurt. Ben says they can't change anything. As he talks, he winces in pain, but covers by saying he pulled a muscle after playing cricket with Tyler. He tells Piper that Tyler's been like a big brother to him. Ben takes his jacket off and gives it to Piper.
Karl and Susan are with Brad and Terese, talking about the kids. Susan thinks they should call the police. Brad says they should try to find them one more time, it won't do them any favours if the police hear about this. If they don't find them they'll talk to Mark. Karl and Susan head out. Terese wonders if Piper is okay. Terese says their daughter was struggling and they didn't see it. Brad takes Terese's hand and says they've had a wakeup call.
Toadie checks Steph's phone, and acknowledges there was a call. It could have been a prank, or Belinda. Steph says it was a child. Toadie suggests it was Adam, but Steph says he barely knows her so why would he call and say he missed her. Steph thanks Sonya and Toadie for dinner, and thanks Vanessa for listening before she heads out.
Vanessa reels from the uncomfortable meeting, she thought Toadie and Sonya had said Steph was well again. Sonya apologises, she thought Steph was ready for this. Toadie says she obviously misses Charlie. Sonya thinks its worrying that she thought Charlie would call her, and Vanessa thinks it says a lot that she isn't allowed contact with her kids. Steph overhears this from the door, clearly upset. Vanessa says Toadie is such a good friend to her, and that he wants to think she's okay, but Vanessa doesn't think she is and she doesn't trust her.

Brad tells Lauren that Terese gets out of hospital tomorrow and she'll need help dressing her wounds. He thinks he should move back in with Terese. Lauren agrees and says she understands, it's the right decision. He kisses her and thanks her for understanding. After Brad leaves, Lauren drops the smile, looking worried.
Ben and Piper wake up, thinking they should head to get the bus. Piper asks Ben why he's in pain. He explains he was hit by a car and cracked a couple of ribs. Piper asks if they should still do this but she can't stay. All she does is screw things up, she came back as her parent's marriage was falling apart and all she does is make things worse. It's easier if she disappears. Ben knows how that feels and they walk to get the bus.
Terese finishes getting dressed and says she'll set up the spare room for Brad moving back in. Brad says he'll do it as he's meant to lessen the load, not add to it. Lauren arrives and asks for news on Piper and Ben but there's no sign of them. Josh and Amber arrive and say the baby has done brilliantly and she'll make a full recovery. Brad and Josh hug, as do Amber and Lauren. Josh says they can take her home in a week. Terese asks for the baby's name, so Amber reveals the name they've chosen. Matilda, for her dad. Lauren starts crying, and they say it's a good choice. Amber says Josh is going to stay a few nights when Matilda moves in so they can bond. Brad tells them that he's moving back in with Terese.
Vanessa answers the door to Steph. She tells them Toadie and Sonya are at work, and she has a meeting to get together, but Steph insists they talk. She apologises about last night, she wants to make peace with her and Lucas.
VANESSA: We want you to get on with your life.
STEPH: Thank you.
VANESSA: But I'm concerned that if we accept your apology, you can tell yourself you are well again and… am I getting that wrong?
STEPH: I am well, I'm getting stronger every day.
VANESSA: Steph, last night. I know you're trying, but watching you struggle, all that stuff with Charlie and you imagining things, my gut is telling me to take a wide birth.
STEPH: I know last night was weird.
VANESSA: This whole thing is weird. I didn't listen to my instincts last time and I've always regretted that. I am not making the same mistake again.
STEPH: I know you must want to punish me for what I did.
VANESSA: I don't want to punish you. I want you to get back on your feet, I just want you to do that away from my family.
Vanessa says that Toadie believes in her, which is the only reason she's letting her stay on at the garage. She tells Steph not to contact her again, otherwise she'll be forced to get in touch with the hospital. Steph leaves Vanessa.
Karl and Susan get off the phone with Libby, who is worried. They feel bad as Libby left Ben in their care. Karl says Ben could struggle to breathe without his pain medication. Karl agrees that they should let Mark know that Ben's missing. Susan gets a text from the Education Department. Karl says that the State Government will cancel the sale of Erinsborough High and commit to the repair of the classrooms. Susan says the petition and community support must have worked, they've saved the school. She hugs Karl, overjoyed.
