- Lauren fires Paige, who retorts that she doesn't have a clue about what is happening with her kids
Lauren relays to Matt what Paige said to her about neglecting Amber and Bailey. Matt thinks Paige just said it to get under Lauren's skin, but Lauren can't shake the suspicion that one of her kids is in trouble, noting that both Amber and Bailey have been quite moody of late. Matt says she can speak to the kids but that Paige was most likely just lashing out because she got fired. Lauren hopes so.
Paige mopes about by the lake, with the teddy bear matching Lauren's that she has had since she was a baby. She's about to fling it into the water in the way of countless Ramsay Street residents' treasures from years gone by, but stops at the last second and looks pensive.
Amber invites Daniel to come to the Waterhole with her and Imogen later. Daniel asks if Amber's trying to set him up with Imogen, and she admits she might be - but suggests that if he and Imogen were together, Amber could hang out with him and it not be weird.
Their conversation is interrupted by the sudden appearance outside Lassiter's of singer- songwriter and TV star Paula Abdul. Daniel recognises her, as does Karl, who shows up behind them. He asks Daniel to find out whether she's staying at the hotel.
Brad bumps into Paige, and they decide to walk to the gym together. He asks how she's finding Ramsay Street, but she admits she's thinking of leaving Erinsborough. She's cagey about why, and tells him she might give the gym a miss after all. Instead, she decides to go and hang out at the bus stop, since watching the buses go by apparently helps her clear her mind.
Amber brags to Josh about having seen Paula Abdul. We learn that she is indeed staying at Lassiter's, doing auditions for a new TV show. Terese comes in, to take Josh to a university open day. Amber suggests she could come along too, but Terese tells her no - she has their day all planned. Josh leaves with Terese, and Amber looks miffed.
Lauren comes over and sits with Amber, asking if everything is okay between her and Josh, and with school. Amber says everything's fine.
LAUREN: Look, I know I've had a lot on lately - but you know I always have time for you, don't you?
AMBER: Why are you being strange?
Lauren admits what Paige said to her. Amber says it's none of Paige's business, but that in any case there's nothing wrong with her. Lauren asks after Bailey, and quickly gathers that Amber knows something.
AMBER: He was going through some stuff, but it's over now.
LAUREN: Oh! Right, well unless you want to spend the rest of your life grounded, I suggest you start talking.
Amber huffs and puffs.
Ben is writing a short story, based on his recent face- off with Jayden. He seems pretty pleased to be having a week off school, and Susan remarks that his suspension is nothing to be proud of. Karl comes in, and quickly locates his The Right Prescription CD, in the hope of showing it to Paula Abdul - explaining that she's in Erinsborough.
SUSAN: Paula Abdul? She was on your celebrity freebie list!
KARL: Yeah! Ha- ha!
BEN: What's that?
KARL: Oh, it's just a funny thing you do, you know. You pick three celebrities, and should the circumstances arise, you're allowed to...
KARL: ... To get to know them better.
BEN (disgusted): I think I might just do this in my room, thanks.
Susan warns Karl not to do anything to embarrass himself with Paula Abdul - namely, playing her his music, let alone anything else! Susan leaves the room, but takes Karl's CD with her. As soon as she's gone, however, he grabs another one from the CD rack, and makes a swift exit!
Josie L has come around, and she and Sonya discuss Callum, who has apparently already started speaking with a US accent. Toadie is at the desk working, but isn't looking very happy. Susan turns up, and asks if Sonya needs anyone to take over Callum's shifts at the nursery. Sonya says that's why Josie's here, but that they got sidetracked talking about Cal. Sonya, Susan and Josie all lament Callum's absence, and Susan notices that Toadie looks even more unhappy.
Susan says she was thinking about Ben taking some nursery shifts, as he's just hanging around at home at the moment. Before Sonya can answer, Toadie butts in, seemingly eager to end the conversation, and says Ben can have some shifts, offering to take him down there when they go later. Susan leaves, and Sonya looks at Toadie worriedly.
Lauren asks Matt if he wants to talk to Bailey alone, since he has more experience with this kind of thing. But Matt says they should confront Bailey together, just as he walks through the door.
LAUREN: Bailey, have you been drinking?
MATT: Amber said you had a party, while we were away. That you passed out. Is that true?
Bailey insists it was only the once, because he was hurt from his break- up with Josie M, and says he's past it now. But Matt reveals he's searched Bailey's room, and has found a mostly- empty spirit bottle. Lauren asks if Bailey took the money from the till at Harold's, and Bailey hits the roof.
BAILEY: You two are unbelievable. So first you invade my privacy, and then you accuse me of stealing. That's real nice!
Bailey gets up and walks out, as a furious Matt slams his fist on the table. Clearly shaken by Bailey's behaviour, Matt apologises to Lauren.
Daniel and Imogen are playing darts. Sheila warns them not to get too competitive again, but today they're getting on very well, Imogen admitting that she's promised Amber she'd be on her best behaviour today. A random guy, Mike, comes in, and starts chatting up Imogen. He offers her a game of pool, and Imogen quickly accepts. Daniel watches them, smiling. Amber comes in.
DANIEL: Look, I don't mean to disappoint you, but I don't think the whole me and Imogen thing is gonna work out.
He points over to where Imogen is playing pool with her new friend, and Amber looks uncomfortable. Daniel asks her what's wrong, but she claims it's just family problems. He asks what's happening.
Paige is sitting miserably at the Only Bus Stop™ watching the buses go by. Bailey shows up, and sits next to her. He starts whingeing about Amber grassing him up to Lauren and Matt, and them finding his booze stash. Paige is unsympathetic.
PAIGE: You have a family that cares for you. Okay, they might get it wrong sometimes. But they're only looking out for you. That's the price you pay for having people that actually love you.
BAILEY: I don't think you get it.
PAIGE: No. I don't. Because I don't have people bending over backwards for me. You're such a brat.
PAIGE: You need to get your act together. Go home. Let your parents kick your butt. And just be grateful that they still care enough to do it.
Bailey meekly complies - but before he leaves, thanks Paige for talking sense into him.
PAIGE: Sure. Hey - how did you know I'd be here?
BAILEY: Oh, I didn't. I just came down to watch the buses come and go. I thought it would - I dunno - clear my head.
Paige looks curious as Bailey walks off, wondering if they are more similar than she thought.
Matt is on the phone to Lauren, talking about Bailey, when Bailey comes in. Matt ends the call and summons Bailey to sit down.
MATT: I'm not angry.
MATT: I've never talked about this before, but my dad had a problem with alcohol.
BAILEY: ... Really?
MATT: He used to hit the bottle hard. That's why I always stop after a couple of beers.
BAILEY: I never saw Grandad with a drink.
MATT: No, he quit. Eventually. Turned his life around.
Bailey is crying, and Matt looks emotional too
MATT: I don't want you to have to go through that.
BAILEY: I'm sorry I lied to you. I didn't mean to complicate things.
Bailey breaks down and hugs Matt suddenly. He comforts him, but Bailey suddenly gets embarrassed and rushes out of the room, saying he has homework to do. Matt looks worried.
Lassiter's Complex / No 28
Sheila is clearing tables outside the Waterhole, when she sees Karl leading Paula Abdul into Lassiter's! Shocked, she immediately phones Susan, and tells her Karl's hanging out with Paula.
SUSAN: Oh no, did she look angry?
SHEILA: Hardly! I think she's taking him up to her room!
SUSAN: Oh, no, he wouldn't!
SHEILA: We could see opposites attracting in the most disastrous way!
Shortly afterwards, Susan has arrived at the complex and is talking to Sheila. Susan thinks Karl's probably showing 'the poor woman' his songs, but says she doesn't want him to be arrested for harassment! Karl and Paula emerge from the hotel smiling, and Sheila rushes towards them, followed by Susan.
SHEILA: Karl Kennedy!
KARL: Ah, Paula, I'd like you to meet my wife Susan.
Paula shakes Sheila's hand.
KARL: Oh, no, no! Not her, goodness!
SHEILA: Too right - I wouldn't lower myself to someone so treacherous, duplicitous, cheating...
KARL: Sheila, Sheila! What do you think's been going on here? Oh - no, you don't think that...
SHEILA: Of course you would. I mean, look at her! As if you'd say no to that.
PAULA: What is she talking about?
KARL: Paula, I am so sorry. Would you mind explaining to Sheila, and my wife of course, what we've been doing?
PAULA: Sure. Karl was kind enough to play doctor for me.
Sheila gasps, but Karl explains Paula had a sore throat, and that Lassiter's rang him to ask if he could take a look.
PAULA: Wait a second. You thought I... with him? You're kidding?
Everyone starts laughing, but Karl gradually looks hurt, as the three women continue to laugh manically at the very thought of it. Paula walks off, and Susan notices Karl's ego is bruised.
SUSAN: She'd be lucky to have you.
KARL: I just hope she likes the CD.
Susan slaps him on the arm.
Sonya, Toadie, Ben and Josie L are at the nursery; Toadie is doing the accounts. Toadie gets a text, and everyone else gets excited, thinking it's from Callum. Toadie makes it clear he doesn't want everyone to start talking about Callum again, and Josie apologises. The text is in fact from Naomi, thanking Toadie for all his support - but he doesn't share this fact.
BEN: You must be missing Callum heaps.
JOSIE: Yeah, well, officially we broke up. But I still want to talk to him all the time.
BEN: Funny how that works, isn't it? As soon as someone's gone, you want to see them even more.
Toadie looks increasingly annoyed.
JOSIE: Callum would say that...
TOADIE: Josie, can you just go home?!
TOADIE: No, she's not doing any work, so she might as well leave.
Sonya's furious, but Josie sadly says it's fine - she'll go. The kids wander away, and Sonya demands Toadie tell her what's going on.
TOADIE: When I saw Josie this morning, I just wanted to turn around and see Callum. And then every time she mentions his name...
SONYA: Well you miss him.
TOADIE: I shouldn't have shouted at her. I've got to apologise.
SONYA: Yeah. Yeah, you do.
TOADIE: And you... I thought I understood what you went through when you gave Callum up. Not that what I'm feeling is anywhere near that. But now I think I'm starting to understand just how strong you've been, letting him go again.
SONYA: Well it's like you've been saying. We just have to be happy for him. He's out there on this big adventure. But we're really lucky - we've got Nell. We've got each other.
Toadie nods, but looks miserable.
Imogen is pashing her new friend Mike at one of the tables! Daniel and Imogen watch from the bar with amusement. Sheila goes over and sprays water at Imogen and Mike.
SHEILA: What if my friend Paula Abdul came in here and saw you acting like trailer trash? Take it outside!
Imogen and Mike rush out, and Amber and Daniel laugh. Daniel suggests they should take a walk together. Amber looks uncomfortable, but agrees, and they leave.
Paige turns up to talk to Lauren, who thanks her for coming - and asks why she didn't say anything about Bailey taking the money.
PAIGE: I felt I deserved the benefit of the doubt.
LAUREN: You did. You did, and I'm sorry - I'm so sorry. Can I ask you, why did you go off at me? Why didn't you just tell me the truth?
PAIGE: Well my parents never had a clue what was going on in my life. Me and my brother, we got shunted between them, and then got sent off to boarding school, so...
LAUREN: I'm sorry. How old's your brother?
PAIGE: Anyway, I think I was just taking it out on you, which wasn't fair.
LAUREN: No, I'm so glad you did. And I really want you to come back to work. I understand if you want to walk away. But we're just getting to know each other, and I think we make a pretty good team.
Paige agrees to come back, and they hug happily.
Daniel and Amber walk across the bridge, Daniel reassuring her that Bailey will get through his problems. Daniel comments on the Valentine's padlocks adorning the bridge.
DANIEL: I love how this concept has spread across the world.
AMBER: Have you seen the bridges in Europe? This kind of doesn't compare.
DANIEL: Yeah, but it's the sentiment that counts. Doesn't matter if it's on a smaller scale.
Daniel admires two of the padlocks, which turn out to be Karl and Susan's.
AMBER: They're pretty loved up. It's nice to see they're still like that after so many years.
Amber then notices her and Josh's own love lock, and suddenly looks sad. She rushes off, promising to catch Daniel later.
Amber asks Josh how the uni open day went. He admits he still doesn't know what he wants to do with his life. When asked what she's been doing, Amber says she's been at the Waterhole with Daniel and Imogen, but neglects to mention her walk alone with Daniel, saying she came straight from there. She kisses him, but looks guilty.
