Harold's Store
Brennan and Broken Shoe Girl (she's Honor in the credits) are bonding over their mutual love of Doctor Who. Only Honor's a Colin Baker kind of girl, whereas Brennan likes Christopher Eccleston. Brennan also states that his favourite Christmas special episode was 'Voyage of the Damned', which Who fans will be aware is otherwise known as the one with Kylie Minogue. Anyhow, Brennan and Honor are getting on like a house on fire, until Brennan suddenly feels uncomfortable, and announces he's leaving. Honor worries it's something she's said, but Brennan insists it's not, and thanks her for the coffee, before making a quick exit.
No 30
Morning. Sonya is on the phone to her sister Jade when Callum comes in. She ends the call, and Sonya reveals that Jade has said she'd be happy for Cal to stay with her in San Francisco. Which is not to say they're going to let him go, she quickly adds - they're still just talking about it, and Cal will have to be patient. He reminds his parents how badly he wants to go, before heading off to school.
CALLUM: I'm just going to leave my hopes and dreams in your capable hands.
Naomi comes in as Callum leaves; she asks Toadie for a lift to work, making out she's still rattled after her stalker incident last night. Sonya is sympathetic, saying she'd be the same. Before Toadie leaves, he tells Sonya they should think carefully about what Callum said.
Harold's Store
Karl is encouraging Holly to study hard when she gets back to school, but she's more interested in being a 'butt-kicking zombie warrior'. Susan sits down and tells them she's found a candidate to step into the deputy principal role while the usual one's away, and that she's interviewing her later today.
Meanwhile, Kyle is discovering lots of administrative problems with Dial-A-Kyle that have developed while he's been away. Georgia tries to persuade him to forget about it and spend all day in bed with her, but to no avail; Kyle decides he needs to leave and sort out an unpaid invoice for a major supplier. Georgia opts to accompany him, but stays to get them some coffees first.
As they leave, Brennan comes in - and he's in a pretty glum kind of mood. Georgia tries to offer a friendly ear, but he coldly tells her he doesn't need to talk.
Dial-A-Kyle
Georgia moans to Kyle about Brennan being terse with her, but he says it's understandable in the circumstances. Kyle has found the unpaid invoice, but the goods don't appear to have been delivered while he was in Thailand - and Georgia explains there could have been a mix-up, given the state of Doug's health while he was running the place. Kyle calls Josh and leaves a message, asking if he knows where the delivery's gone. Now at a loose end, he and Georgia get frisky, and rush off into the sales office, slamming the door behind them.
Rebecchi Law
Sonya has been digging dirt on the area where Jade lives in San Francisco; apparently lots of the schools have metal detectors, and kids get frisked for weapons. Toadie reminds her that Cal's school is a commute away from Jade's, but Sonya's not reassured, and is worried he might fall into the wrong crowd. Naomi listens, while getting Toadie to sign papers.
TOADIE: I would love to chain him to us and never let him out of our sight, but we just can't do that.
He asks if Sonya found anything positive in her research about San Francisco, but it's plain she's looking for reasons to stop him going.
TOADIE: Listen, I get that you are scared of letting him go. I am too. But he's gonna be okay.
SONYA: How do you know that?
TOADIE: Have a look at the kid. He's smart, he's sensitive, he's mature. He's not gonna get himself into trouble. And this is hard for me too. And I know why you're holding on so tight. You're scared of losing him again. But he is gonna be brilliant, and he deserves this opportunity.
Nell starts crying, so Sonya rushes off home with her, clearly not happy either.
The Waterhole
Toadie tells Naomi that he hopes Sonya will change her mind about Callum going to the US. Sheila comes over with some photos she took at the singles night, and shows them to Naomi in case she can identify her stalker. Naomi's reluctant to look through them, and says she didn't get a clear view of the guy. She says he may not even have been following her at all - just going the same way home.
However, Toadie's insistent that Naomi should look through the photos, as the guy needs to be identified. She makes the excuse that she has to get back to work, but Toadie tells her to take the rest of the day off. Sheila starts showing her the photos one by one.
No 24
Sonya and Nell turn up to see Brennan, and he confesses to Sonya about his accidental meeting with the woman in Harold's last night. He explains they had a lot in common, but that he feels guilty because of Kate.
SONYA: Kate's gone, Mark. And I know that it's terrible, but there's no way she would want you existing only to miss her.
Brennan's not ready to forget about Kate. Sonya says he doesn't have to, but that time goes on and he'll have to move with it. Sonya admits she's finding it hard letting go herself - of Callum. She's feeling rotten that she's coming between Cal and his dreams.
BRENNAN: You're allowed to find it tough.
SONYA: Yeah, I know, but it's just like my brain is translating that into acting tough, and I keep putting up these walls of objections every time Callum or Jarrod bring it up. And the more Callum is excited about it, the more I just shut him down. And the minute I think about not having him around, I just... I just don't know how I'm going to be able to handle it.
Unsurprisingly, Sonya becomes victim of an advice-boomerang, as Brennan tells her that she can't hold on forever, either. Like peas in a pod, those two.
Dial-A-Kyle
Georgia and Kyle emerge from the office, buttoning up their clothes. Josh texts Kyle, saying he can't remember the missing delivery arriving while Doug was in charge. Kyle wonders whether the security cameras on the garage next door might show what happened with the delivery, and calls Chris to find out how far back the footage goes. Georgia's keen to get back to TITTNL, but Kyle wants to get to the bottom of the mystery.
No 26
Chris is talking to Kyle on the phone, explaining how Brennan's categorisation of the CCTV tapes works. He ends the call. Sheila has the photos of the men from singles night spread all over the coffee table, and is still trying to get Naomi to identify her stalker - without success.
Naomi tells Sheila she wants to just forget about the whole ordeal, but Sheila suggests Naomi should come to her self-defence class with her this afternoon, so that if the stalker shows up again, she'll be prepared. Chris offers to come too, for moral support, and Naomi is desperate to wriggle out of it - but is eventually browbeaten into saying yes.
No 30
Callum comes in from school, and Sonya's waiting for him. He's been to get his design competition certificate framed, which reminds Sonya how grown up he's become. She looks at a framed photo of him as a little boy, and it triggers a series of flashbacks.
In the first flashback, Sonya and a younger Callum sit on the Bench of Contemplation. She explains to him that her own mum died when she was a kid, and that she doesn't know how to be a mum.
CALLUM (flashback): So you just ditched me?
SONYA: No, I loved you. I loved you so much - I hated having to leave. But I knew if I didn't, things would have gotten worse. For both of us.
The second flashback is more recent, as Sonya recalls ruining Nell's birthday cake, and getting upset because it was as much for Cal as for Nell. Cal consoles her, reminding her that he doesn't even remember missing out on birthday cakes as a kid. Sonya hugs him, saying she remembers.
There are more flashbacks from when Sonya first met Toadie and Callum, and then of her marrying Toadie, with Cal by her side.
Back in the present, Sonya wipes tears from her eyes as Toadie arrives home.
SONYA: I think you might be right.
TOADIE: What? Sorry, say that again - I'm right about something?
SONYA: I've been holding on too tight. I've been trying to find reasons for Callum not to go, but I know that he's gonna be okay. He's just - he's gonna be amazing. I mean, I know that in my head.
Sonya describes how scared she was when Callum was born, and how fragile he was. She cries, saying she missed out on so much of his life - and now as she's finally being a mother to him, he wants to leave. She says it feels like she's losing him all over again, and she can't bear it. Toadie hugs her.
Fitzgerald Motors
Georgia and Kyle are watching the garage CCTV footage for April to see if they can track down the missing delivery. But all they can see is Chris walking up and down, picking his nose!
Then they see somebody else in the footage - a man with a shaved head, who is seen burying something large in Kyle's mulch pile...
The Waterhole
Naomi, Chris and Sheila come in, fresh from their self-defence class. Chris and Naomi are fooling about, pretending to fight each other, much to some extras' amusement.
CHRIS: You don't scare me, grasshopper. I laugh at your pathetic moves.
Sheila tells Naomi off for not taking the self-defence class more seriously, but Naomi says she's been so anxious that it's good to have a laugh. Brennan comes in, and almost gets karate-chopped by Naomi. He's decided to host a barbecue next week, and invites them all along.
CHRIS: Any special occasion?
BRENNAN: Oh, I just thought I'd stop being a hermit. And I want to thank everyone for standing by me. I know I haven't been easy to know of late, and I want to change that.
They all promise to come, and to tell Kyle and Georgia about it too.
No 30
Sonya is in the living room when Callum comes in.
SONYA: You - you need to make sure you call me at least once a day. Okay, at least?
Cal looks at her oddly, realising what's happening.
SONYA: And if you don't have any credit, then you reverse the charges, because I want my phone call. And you just - you do not go out on school nights.
CALLUM: Yeah, I promise.
SONYA: And you listen to everything that Auntie Jade says, okay - no arguments.
CALLUM: Of course.
SONYA: And you make sure that you get all your work done.
CALLUM: Yeah, I'll study day and night.
SONYA: And please, please don't join a gang.
CALLUM: Yeah, I'll try not to.
SONYA: 'Cause, Cal, you're my everything. And just - I need you to look after yourself.
CALLUM: I will. I truly will. I'm gonna be okay, Mum.
SONYA: I know you will. I know.
They hug happily, and Toadie joins them.
CALLUM: I can't breathe. I can't - guys! You're gonna choke me!
But they both cling onto him for dear life.
Harold's Store
Susan is bragging to Karl and Holly about her 'fabulous' new replacement deputy principal.
KARL: Oh, anyone I know?
SUSAN: Umm, I'll let you know when it's official.
KARL: Oh. Why so mysterious?
SUSAN: I just haven't got all the paperwork through yet. But all will be revealed in time.
Kyle and Georgia rush in, having printed out a photo of the guy they saw on the CCTV footage, burying something in the mulch. Kyle asks the Kennedys if they recognise him, and they don't. But on the second showing...
HOLLY: I know who it is.
KARL: Really?
HOLLY: Yes, I know him. It's Mummy's friend Victor.
KYLE: Victor? Who's Victor?
Shortly afterwards, Karl has sent a copy of the image to Izzy, who has confirmed the man is Victor Cleary.
KYLE: Okay, so why does everyone look as if this is bad news?
SUSAN: I might take Holly home and let you explain.
Susan and Holly leave, while Karl puts his exposition hat on.
KARL: Victor Cleary was the brother of a guy called Gus Cleary. He lived here many years ago. Gus died at a fire at Lassiter's. The circumstances were considered suspicious; Paul Robinson was interviewed over it. In fact he even confessed, but later retracted. There wasn't enough evidence to get a conviction... What was the date of this footage?
KYLE: It was the eighth of April.
GEORGIA: The day that Kate was shot.
KARL: Well then you have to go to the police.
