School - the Classroom ™
Bailey sits glumly with the ballot papers on the table in front of him. Gem returns with a coffee for each of them, and is upset that he's gone through her bag rather than talking to her. She says she thought they were friends - which he agrees with - and she asks if anyone else knows. He says no, but wants to know why she would cheat.
GEM: I did it for you.
BAILEY: For me?
GEM: Well, for Amber.
He tells her it's not the right way to help.
BAILEY: You're a teacher. You need to fix this.
GEM: Or what? You'll tell Susan? I could lose my job. You'd really do that to me?
BAILEY: Just put the votes back, please.
Mason sneaks into the living room, putting on his t- shirt. Karl arrives home from jogging.
MASON: I was just on my way home.
KARL: It's a bit of a detour, isn't it?
Mason explains that he slept over, and that he came in pretty late. Karl tells him he doesn't have to sneak in and out, and suggests that if he's keeping his relationship a secret, maybe he isn't that serious. Mason denies this, and says it's what they both want.
Imogen is putting the bin out, and she sees Mason leaving the Kennedys'. He greets her, but she says she's late for school. He wishes her luck with the election. She assumed he'd be supporting Amber - which he is officially, but he tells her she'd make a better school captain. She's pleased, then notices he has his t- shirt inside out. He asks to borrow Hermione. She says yes, and wants to tag along. He says it's for a date with Rhiannon. She spots lipstick on his t- shirt and then she "remembers" she's having a driving lesson.
Rhiannon is practising some elocution exercises while making breakfast for Karl and Susan. It's a bit well done.
RHIANNON: Just don't look in the bin. I had to throw out all the burnt ones.
KARL: These are the unburnt ones?
Jackson wants help with his woodwork project. Rhiannon fobs him off, saying she'll do it later, with Jackson saying it's due in tomorrow. Karl tells him to hurry up and goes over to talk to Rhiannon about the living arrangement. He wonders how Jackson feels about Mason staying over. She says that Jackson loves Mason.
RHIANNON: And anyway, I can have a friend over if I want. I pay rent.
KARL: Uh, yeah, you actually don't.
RHIANNON: Well, I WILL. Soon.
Susan suggests they find their own place, and Rhiannon says it's all part of the plan. She thinks No 24 will be perfect. Karl points out that she will need a few thousand for a bond and a month's rent in advance. Rhiannon has no idea how she's going to get that.
Lauren tells Amber she's really proud of her. She thanks her for the picnic, and Amber says Mason did most of it. She asks her mother if it's all good between her and Matt. Lauren unconvincingly says it is. Josh arrives as Lauren goes for a shower. He wishes Amber good luck. She's offhand, and tells him that he didn't think she had a chance earlier. The only person he thought could beat Imogen was himself. He defends himself saying it wasn't her normal thing, but she says she wants to prove she's not useless. She says he and his family are all ambitious.
AMBER: You're just hard to be around sometimes. You're all so perfect.
JOSH: No, we're just as messed up as the next family, trust me.
AMBER: Well, what about Imogen? She's good at everything.
JOSH: No, she's… not as together as you think.
Amber looks concerned, but Josh doesn't elaborate.
Amber and Imogen meet by the stairs, and look awkwardly at each other. Then Amber says it's ridiculous and they agree their friendship is more important than the school captaincy. They wish each other luck.
AMBER: I still want to win though.
IMOGEN: Me too.
They laugh. Amber asks how things are going, because Josh says she was a bit stressed. Imogen tells Amber she's imagining things. Amber claims to know what's going on, and Imogen looks panicky. Amber guesses it's Imogen's secret crush. A relieved Imogen admits it is, but refuses to divulge the identity.
AMBER: How am I supposed to tease you mercilessly about it if I don't know who it is?
IMOGEN: Um… that's kind of the point. (Scoffs)
Gem wanders past and knocks on the door of Susan's office. Getting no reply, she walks in. Susan comes down the stairs, commenting to a random pupil how exciting the vote for school captain is! She makes for her office and finds Gem, who claims she had to submit a safety report for some equipment. Susan wonders why it couldn't wait - which Gem says is because it's bordering on dangerous - and tells Gem to send her an email next time. There's a shot of the ballot box as Gem leaves.
Rhiannon is telling Mason what Karl and Susan had told her: it was a stupid idea to move out because it was impossible for her to get her own place. He points out that wasn't what they said: she just has to save.
MASON: Maybe I can help you sort out like a weekly budget or something.
RHIANNON: Oh look at you being all mature.
MASON: No, it's just…practical.
RHIANNON: It's hot.
They kiss, but she says she has to sort out Jackson's woodwork project. Mason offers to help, and Rhiannon is enthusiastic, especially if he wears a tool belt.
Mason is wearing a tool belt. He's carved JB on the top of the Jackson's box. Rhiannon tells him it's awesome. She says Jackson misses out by not having a dad around like other boys. Mason says he's pleased to help him. They start kissing and she takes Mason's top off. Karl comes home and is not too pleased with what he sees.
KARL: Oh guys, please. This is a living room!
While Mason carries on with the project, Karl asks Rhiannon that when she gets sidetracked, how does she think Jackson feels?
In another classroom, the votes are being counted, Gem taking them out of the ballot box. With one vote left, the votes are equal. Gem announces that the school captain is Imogen. She deliberately shows the voting paper to Bailey, who turns and walks out. Susan spidey- senses pick up something, and she asks if everything's OK. Gem claims she gets nervous in the close ones.
In the classroom ™ , Gem finds Bailey and asks if they're OK.
GEM: I put them back. The right person won.
Bailey says he forgives her, but tells her not to do anything like that again. She tells him he's amazing, standing up for what's right. She comes over to him and asks him what he wants to do when he leaves school. He thinks she'll laugh, but she's encouraging, and he says he wants to be an astronaut. He tells her about it, ending by saying it's ridiculous. She takes his hands in hers, and tells him it's important to have a dream
GEM: If it wasn't scary, it wouldn't be special. And you're not alone. I'll do everything I can to make your dreams come true.
Georgia congratulates Imogen on being captain, and Imogen reassures Lauren that it was really close. There's a street cricket match going on, arranged by Rhiannon so that she can spend more time with Jackson, and introduce him to the other families.
KARL: Good thinking 99.
RHIANNON: 99? What's that supposed to mean?
KARL: Sorry, it's an old TV show. It's my idea of saying 'love the idea'.
RHIANNON: You're really weird.
RHIANNON: But thanks.
Georgia comments to Imogen that Mason and Rhiannon are "getting along" (aka smooching), and she says she has to go. Georgia and Lauren are puzzled.
Josh congratulates Imogen, but comments that she doesn't seem too happy considering she's won. She says it's because he couldn't keep quiet. He says he didn't mention the bulimia and is surprised she hasn't told Amber already, since they're best friends. She says she'll tell people when she's ready and he wonders why she's overreacting. She storms off, telling him it's her life, her problem
Mason show Jackson how to bowl as Rhiannon looks on affectionately. Bailey is batsman and waiting for a bowler. Jackson doesn't want to bowl, but Mason encourages him, saying even Warnie got hit for 6 sometimes and anyway Bailey isn't that good. Mason signals to Bailey who lets himself be bowled by Jackson. Mason wants to get Rhiannon to play next, but she refuses because of her high heels. He threatens her with cricket or being dumped in the pool, and he picks her up and carries her off with Jackson in tow.
KARL: I think it's finally sinking in for her. Rhiannon is learning how to be a parent.
LAUREN: Yeah, fabulous. Just wonder if Mason knows he's part of the plan.
Georgia is looking through some photos of herself, which she needs for the PR of the CD: "the kid before the star". She finds a photo of Gem who was Miss Western District in 2005. Georgia tells Gem she wanted to be her then. Gem agrees (wistfully) it was a great night. Georgia decides to ask Kate which photo to use. Gem says it's "awesome" they are friends again. Georgia says she has a lot to be grateful for. She leaves and Gem takes out the picture of herself and looks at it.
Jackson has had a good day: bowling Bailey out, getting his woodwork project done, and now getting a sundae. Rhiannon sends him for some napkins and tells Mason it's good that Jackson has a mentor. She says that they'd make a great family. Mason is taken aback.
