Number 22
Terese is angry about Josh quitting school to concentrate on his swimming and tries to change his mind. Josh thinks school can wait, he only has a few years he can concentrate on his sport. She wonders if Amber's been too much of a distraction, but he says he won't break up with Amber. Terese orders him to go back to school, just as Brad and Imogen enter. Imogen thinks he's crazy for wanting to leave school, and Brad sides with Terese after she gives him a mean look. Josh says it's too late, it's already done.
Number 26
Chris wakes up when Bossy starts licking his face. Sheila tells Chris his late lunch has turned into a siesta. Chris looks at his watch and leaps to his feet, he needs to rush back to work as Danni is going to lose it. Sheila tells him he's exhausted and she thinks he should take some time off work.
CHRIS: I'll be fine, okay!!
SHEILA: Maybe you should see a counsellor, because snapping at people who are trying to help you is not really working for you.
Chris apologises, he doesn't like the idea of talking to a stranger about Hudson. Sheila says he has lots of people he can talk to, her, Kyle, Kate, Amber. Chris says Amber isn't talking to him since she lashed out at her and blamed her for the accident. Sheila tells him to reach out to her. He says he might when he's in a better mood, but he leaves to go to work.
Number 32
Sheila arrives looking for Amber, who is at work. Sheila tells Lou that there's been tension between Amber and Chris and she wants to fix it.
LOU: Staying out of other people's business as usual, I see.
SHEILA: (proudly) Mmm hmm.
Lou opens a box containing his great grandparents wedding certificate.
LOU: Lauren thought she'd surprise me with a family tree. She's going all out for my 70th birthday do. If you play your cards right you might score an invite.
SHEILA: I might just see my way clear to attending as long as you're not expecting me to jump out of a cake!
LOU: Er, not jumping out of a cake would be birthday present enough.
SHEILA: You should be so lucky, I'll see myself out.
Lou looks through the wedding, birth and death certificates and looks gobsmacked.
Number 28
Brad and Terese thank Susan for agreeing to see them. Josh says his decision is flexible, he can easily go back to school if he changes his mind, and he says that Susan told him to focus on what he really wants. Susan says she meant he should prioritise, not that he should quit school. Terese offers to reconsider the ban on seeing Amber, but Josh says it's not about that. He wants to concentrate on getting to the Commonwealth Games and he doesn't want to miss out because of school work. Susan would want all students to finish and get the VCE but it is rare to find a student who is so focused and determined and knows what he wants, and thinks he should concentrate on swimming. Brad notes that Josh has pressure from all sides. Josh says he's making the right choice and leaves. Terese asks Brad how they can protect their son if he won't back her up.
The Garage
Amber says hi to Chris. Chris silently listens as Amber says it sucks that Hudson got arrested and she feels terrible that Robbo came back because of her family. She says they can't take responsibility for his actions or Hudson's. Chris apologises for going off at her, there's no excuse. Amber hopes they can get past it, and he says they can, giving Amber a big hug. Amber says she has to testify against Hudson. Chris understands. She asks if he's talked to Hudson, but Chris says Hudson wants nothing to do with him. Amber suggests he should spend the day on the couch, but Chris can't as he has a new boss and hasn't made the best first impression, in fact he should probably get back to work. Amber asks Chris to call her, anytime he needs.
Charlie's
Lou tells Sheila he wants a drink, a whiskey.
SHEILA: A little early in the day for the hard stuff, isn't it?
LOU: Sheila, do I look like I'm in the mood for a chat?
SHEILA: Well, do you want a single malt? We have a really nice...
LOU: I want a whiskey, bar wench, now!
SHEILA: Do not call me bar wench!
Sheila pours him the drink. He downs it, and asks for the same again. She suggests he should have a soft drink, getting him an orange juice and asks what has gotten him so rattled. Lou says old age gets to you, and he realises that he'll need to call his birthday party off. Sheila's still confused, isn't it Lou's dream to be fussed over? Lou says dreams can turn to nightmares and goes to sit down.
The Garage
Chris gets a phonecall, and starts looking through paperwork.
(Later)
Chris is sleeping on the desk when he gets another phone call, this time from Danni. She knows he's been sleeping because she saw it on the security camera. Chris is surprised to see the camera in the corner. He apologises and says it won't happen again.
Charlie's
Sheila asks Lou what's bothering him. Lou says he found his father, grandfather and great grandfather's death certificates.
SHEILA: I hate to break it to you but at your age it's not surprising they're dead.
Lou says none of the Carpenter men have lived past 70. They all died in the week leading up to their 70th birthday, and he's worried because he turns 70 this week. Sheila rolls her eyes at him thinking he's cursed.
SHEILA: If you're scared of a simple thing like dying...
LOU: I'm not scared, but I'm not looking forward to it.
SHEILA: Who is? Getting older is no walk in the park. You're more vulnerable, you can't punch at the same weight.
LOU: Sheila, is this supposed to be helpful?
SHEILA: Well get Karl to give you a check- up, he can give you a complete grease and oil change. You could lose a few kilos.
Lou says this is fate, why waste time trying to fight it, but he asks Sheila to keep it from Lauren and Matt, he doesn't want to worry them.
SHEILA: Gramps is losing his marbles, you don't think that's going to worry them?
Lou wonders how to cancel the birthday party. Sheila says if this is his last party he should go out with a bang.
LOU: What if the old ticker gives out in front of everyone I love? What sort of trauma will I be inflicting upon my family?
SHEILA: Every time I think you can't behave any more ridiculously, I'm pleasantly surprised. You're a silly old fool.
LOU: Not for much longer by the looks of it.
Lassiter's Complex
Terese asks Amber if Josh told her about leaving school. Amber knows that Terese isn't too happy about it. Terese doesn't want to put Amber in an awkward position, she just wants Josh to realise his dream of winning gold. She's worried what will happen if Josh doesn't succeed, what if he comes in 3rd or 5th. It wouldn't win him any media contracts, and he won't get much money from swimming compared with being a golf or football player. If he injures himself that'll be his career gone and his dreams ended. Amber hadn't thought of it like that. Terese continues to subtly manipulate Amber by asking about her plans for the future, going to university or travelling. Amber always thought she would work with horses like her mum, but now she isn't sure. Terese says Josh is torn between swimming, finishing his VCE, and Amber, and Terese thinks he should focus on the things which give him the best options. She'd be very grateful if Amber could help her get that through to Josh.
Harold's
Josh surprises Amber by kissing her. Josh says that his dad's organised a dinner to talk about his future. Josh realises he's never asked about what Amber wants to do with a future, making him a terrible boyfriend, but Amber says he makes it up in other ways. Amber doesn't know what she wants to do, but it's all about possibilities. Josh asks when she started thinking about this, was it this afternoon? He asks who she's been talking to. She claims no one, it's just important to have options.
Charlie's
Josh joins Brad and Terese for dinner. Imogen is apparently on the way. Brad and Terese want to talk about things now they've had time to cool off. Josh asks if they can talk about her using Amber to get to him. Josh accuses her of interfering and of always having to get her own way. Josh storms off.
Terese asks if that's how they all see her. Brad is trying to see it from Josh's perspective. Brad says he couldn't go all the way with surfing, he didn't have that drive, but Josh does. Terese wants Josh to succeed, both in swimming and at school. Brad says Josh is driven, just like she is. Brad says Josh is 17, he doesn't drink or go out to parties, instead he's focused on swimming, every day, rain or shine. Brad says Josh isn't an ordinary teenager, and he needs their support and they owe it to him to let him do it his way. Brad says he's going after Josh.
Number 26
Chris looks glum. He's went to all the trouble of cooking dinner but he hasn't eaten. Sheila says every boss has their soft spot, but Chris doesn't think Danni does. She's watching his every move, waiting for him to stuff up. Danni says he's close to getting his second official warning, and if he gets three, he'll lose his job. Sheila says he'll lift his game at work, things will get easier.
CHRIS: You should do this for a living.
SHEILA: Me, a counsellor? Clients would never get a word in.
Sheila gets some dessert for them. She asks what his plans are, but everyone is busy. Sheila was going to go to the movies but offers to stay in. Chris doesn't want her to change her plans, saying he was hoping for an early night anyway. While Sheila has her back turned, Chris quickly takes out a sleeping pill and swallows it. He passes on dessert and goes for an early night. Sheila says goodnight, but alarm bells should be ringing as I don't think Chris has ever passed on food before.
Charlie's
Imogen arrives for dinner, surprised that Josh and Brad aren't there. Terese asks how Imogen's counselling is going. Imogen says it's full on, realising that she has a choice in what she does and making sure it's the right one, it's all part of growing up. Terese says she's really proud of Imogen.
Josh and Brad arrive for dinner. Josh says he's fine to eat, but he hasn't changed his mind. Terese says she was wrong to stop Josh from seeing Amber, and she wants him to finish his VCE but accepts it's his choice. She says he has their full support. Josh thanks her, and says to keep his end of the deal, he'll still do gardening duties for a month.
Number 26 Back Yard
Sheila hears rustling out the back and rushes out. She sees Chris in his pyjamas, throwing rubbish from the bin onto the ground before sleepwalking through it towards the front of the house. Sheila shouts after him.
Unknown Road
Sheila, in her dressing gown, races after Chris who is still sleepwalking, calling after him to stop. A car slows down, and an older man calls over to Sheila and asks if she needs a hand. Sheila can't make out his face. She tells him to head home, but he continues to harass her, asking her if she'd like some company. He stops the car and gets out, telling her he can be friendly to her. She yells at him to leave her alone and runs away. She runs around a corner and hides as she hears the engine start.
