- Ajay tells Rani how much Priya hurt him, but that he never imagined life without her
- Karl finds a lump on Lucas's testicle and runs some tests; Lucas keeps it quiet from Vanessa
- Rani is still seeing Ghost Priya; Kate recommends to Ajay that Rani has counselling
Kate comes round for an early- morning pry. She asks Rani if she would help her sort through some of Priya's things from the principal's office in case she wants to keep any, as Susan has (allegedly) asked Kate to clear it. Rani is unsure at first, but Ajay says he'll support her either way – and Rani agrees to help.
Erinsborough High School
In the principal's office, Rani uncovers some old family photos, while Kate demonstrates her true motivation for becoming involved (nosiness) by only bothering to sort through items that directly impact on Priya's personal life.
KATE: Okay, any Education Department documents we'll just file on the floor!
Rani has also found some letters to Priya from pupils, thanking her for her support with their schoolwork etc. Kate says this demonstrates what a great teacher Priya was; Rani never realised how much Priya was admired by her fellow pupils. Next, Kate passes her Priya's journal, and suggests Rani keep it – though she doesn't have to read it right now. Rani adds it to her box.
Lucas comes in, promising on the phone to Susan to ‘keep an eye out for him'. Vanessa asks him what his big secret is; he rubs his hands and says she'll find out. Karl comes in, handing Lucas a mysterious envelope. Karl also tells Lucas that his hospital test results will be back this afternoon. Karl suggests they arrange an appointment to discuss them, and Lucas admits he still hasn't told Vanessa.
Vanessa comes off the phone from the hospital; they need the on- site flat back that Vanessa and Lucas have been staying in, to house a family with an injured child. She suggests they get a motel near the hospital as Patrick won't be out of the hospital for a week, but Lucas has a better idea, and shakes the envelope Karl gave him, which seems to have keys jangling inside…
Lucas shows Vanessa into the apartment, and reveals he made Susan an offer on it as he heard she was looking for tenants. Vanessa's really excited, and Lucas says they can move in right away. Lucas takes down a list of possessions in storage that Vanessa will need from No 32. Vanessa asks why Lucas and Karl were being secretive earlier, but Lucas passes it off, saying it was just about the keys for the flat. Vanessa hugs Lucas.
VANESSA: Oh, we're going to be so happy here.
But Lucas looks worried.
Sheila asks Karl if he and Ajay are still planning to go ahead with the Right Prescription gig at Charlie's on Wednesday night. She asks if she should cancel the gig (due to the loss of their musical instruments in the explosion) but Karl says he's keen to go ahead. He's not sure about Ajay, but Sheila suggests it would give him something positive to focus on.
Karl is trying to talk Ajay into playing the gig, but he's too busy with the civil action, and also with Rani whom he says is still struggling. Rani comes in and overhears them. She says the clear- out with Kate went well, and adds that Ajay should buy some new drums and do the gig as planned.
AJAY: I'm just not ready to get back into music, that's all.
RANI: But you love it. Mum would want you to. She used to watch you at your gigs; she couldn't take her eyes off you. She thought you were magic.
Ajay's still not sure, but Rani and Karl practically push Ajay out of the door, so he and Karl can rehearse. When they're gone, Rani opens the box of Priya's possessions from the school. She removes the photos, then opens Priya's journal.
RANI (reading): It doesn't matter what I say; it's always the wrong thing. I understand Rani's upset about what happened – but the way she looked at me today, I feel like she must… hate me.
Ghost Priya appears in the kitchen, silent and sad- looking. Rani gets upset, and closes the journal.
Erinsborough High School
Karl and Ajay are rehearsing in one of the classrooms, but Ajay is upset when she sees some of Priya's handwriting on the chalkboard. Ajay admits he's not ready to play again, and apologising, leaves Karl to it.
Lou helps Lucas shift some boxes from No 32 into the back of his van, but notices a ring in one of the boxes. Lucas admits he's going to propose to Vanessa; he bought the ring a few weeks ago but the time didn't seem right with Patrick being ill. Lou suggests he give it to her today, and Lucas replies that there's no time like the present.
Amidst the unpacking, Lucas tries to talk to Vanessa, but she's too busy with all her pots and pans. She wants to cook a celebratory dinner for the first night in their new flat, but realises Lucas wanted to say something. Backing out, he tells her he was thinking of a celebration too, but at a restaurant. Vanessa thinks a home- cooked meal would be better and hands him a shopping list to take to Harold's.
Ajay and Kate are having a drink; Kate says she experienced similar difficulties to Rani when getting over the death of her own mum. Ajay asks what happened with Rani in Priya's office, and Kate explains she gave her Priya's journal to read. Ajay panics, as he knows the journal contains lots of personal things that Priya was discussing with her counsellor, about her marriage and her affair with Paul. Kate didn't realise, and is apologetic – but Ajay runs off to try and retrieve the journal before she reads it.
Rani looks warily at the journal on the table, before eventually picking it up, putting it down, picking it up again and continuing to read.
RANI (reading): More anger from Rani, and as always I snap right back. After our huge blow- up today I felt like I should just give up trying.
RANI and PRIYA's voice: And then it hit me. The truth is, we're so alike, Rani and I. That's why we fight and probably will all our lives.
PRIYA's voice: But it's also the very thing that makes her so precious to me. It's why I adore my sweet, strong, clever, beautiful girl. I love her with all of my being and I know deep down she loves me too.
Rani looks up to see Ghost Priya smiling at her from the kitchen. Rani smiles too, as Ghost Priya fades from view in a flash of light.
Later, Ajay comes rushing in, and asks Rani if she's read the journal. Rani nods, and asks for a hug. She says she didn't read much, but enough.
RANI: Well, at first it was pretty bad. But then I kept reading and it was beautiful. Mum understood me, Dad. Even when I was being a total brat, she knew I loved her. And she loved me.
AJAY: Of course she did. You must have known that.
RANI: Yeah. I just needed to hear it in her own words.
Ajay kisses Rani and they hug emotionally.
Lucas runs into Karl, and tells him Vanessa's thrilled with the apartment. Karl asks if they've spoken about his hospital tests; Lucas says he didn't want to spoil things for her. Karl says he still needs to speak to Lucas about his test results. Lucas wants to put it off, but Karl has booked him in for an appointment this afternoon, and tells Lucas that if he doesn't turn up, he'll come to the flat with the results. Lucas asks if it's serious, and Karl simply repeats that he should come for the appointment.
As Karl leaves, Lou comes in, and asks Lucas how he went with his proposal to Vanessa. Lucas admits he didn't get a chance to ask her, because the timing was wrong, but Lou thinks he's just having cold feet.
LOU: Mate, go home and propose to that woman this minute.
LUCAS: The moment's not right.
LOU: To hell with the moment. Create the moment! You love her, she loves you. What else matters?
Kate has made a Casserole of Guilt™ to atone for her mistake with the journal, and presents it to Ajay. He tells her she has nothing to feel bad about; far from setting her back, reading the journal has helped Rani come to terms with Priya's death by proving her mum loved her. Kate's relieved, and Ajay thanks her for helping. Kate asks if Ajay will read the journal too; but he says he knows Priya loved him and he loved her, which is all he needs to know.
Erinsborough Hospital (outside)
Lucas is walking in slow- motion out of the building, and sits at a bench. Karl comes out and sits down next to him.
LUCAS: Testicular cancer?
LUCAS: But I feel fine. Do they ever make mistakes?
KARL: There's no mistake, I'm afraid.
Karl tells Lucas they need to do further tests. If the cancer is isolated in the testicle, the prognosis is very good, although they'll have to remove the testicle. If the cancer has spread too far, however, it could be terminal.
Lucas toys with the engagement ring, but hides it when Vanessa gets back from the shops. She says she's had a call from Patrick's pediatrician; they're so pleased with his progress that they're sending him home tomorrow. Lucas is thrilled and they hug.
VANESSA: It'll finally just be the three of us. Our little family.
LUCAS: Yeah. I can't wait.
VANESSA: We're going to be okay. Hey – you're gonna be great at this. You know, a few weeks ago I was scared that the only thing we had, the only thing holding us together, was our worry for Patrick. But I know that's not true. What we have – it's perfect. I know I can rely on you completely. For anything. You're my rock, and I'm not going to let anything change that.
LUCAS: Me neither.
Cue worried hug.
