Number 28
Karl is pottering around in the garden while Susan is on the computer. Mal walks out of the rooms holding Billy's old teddy.
MAL: What's all this stuff doing here? I thought it'd been in storage.
KARL: You mum wanted to hold on to a few childhood mementos. Then she opened a bottle of wine and got all sentimental!
SUSAN: Oh shush.
Mal comments on the loss of stuffing in the teddy and denies Susan's accusations that he was the one who caused it! Karl backs up Susan's version though - open heart surgery with a plastic spoon. Mal remembers!
KARL: For a moment I was hopeful you were following my footsteps.
SUSAN: Yeah, until I found out you were hiding jelly babies in there so you could pretend to rip his organs out with your teeth!
Karl and Susan have a good laugh at the memories. Mal wants to clear out some of the old broken toys but Susan refuses to let him throw away the memories - Karl motions to Mal not to argue! She does agree to take it down to their storage container, though.
Number 30
Christmas spirit is around as Sonya claims there is no such thing as an over- the- top Christmas. Sonya teases Jade about leaving an extra place at the Christmas dinner for Kyle so Jade makes a quick escape. Toadie walks in with some food just in case Charlie's underestimates the numbers and Sonya freaks out about the dinner being perfect. Toadie doesn't want to be Santa because he's the "big bad development lawyer", but it's OK because Sonya already asked Karl. However...it's not OK because it would appear Karl as forgotten since he's driving Mal to the airport. Sonya races out.
Number 28
The K's are still sorting through some old mementos and Susan is giving Mal a mother's "I'm gonna miss you" hug. Mal answers the door to Sonya and has a quiet word about being glad that things are sorted with Jade. Sonya is trying to subtly question them on their plans and Karl can tell she's freaking out, thinking they had forgotten her party. But no! They'll drop Mal off, put stuff in storage and be right back. I'm guessing in soap terms that means something will go wrong.
Ramsay Street
Toadie takes a photo for the K's and their eldest child.
TOADIE: I expect you to email me that.
MAL: I expect *you* to grow that mullet back!
Mal promises the folks that he won't leave it so long between visits. Susan encourages him to be good to Catherine and he takes a last look around the street.
Charlie's
Sonya welcomes some extras along with Paul and Sophie. Sophie feels like she is too old for the party and Paul tells her to grab some food.
SOPHIE: OK, why are you being so nice?
PAUL: I'm always nice.
That earns a look from Sophie and raised eyebrows from me. Over on the other side of the room, Callum gets some Christmas music going and Sonya wants to keep the kids happy until Santa arrives.
CALLUM: He better bring some pretty good presents.
TOADIE: It's Karl, you'd be lucky to get an orange.
SONYA: It's Santa, not Karl.
TOADIE (to Callum): Do you want to be the one to tell her, or should I?
CALLUM: I spy mince pies; you're on your own.
Sonya is panicking about Karl not showing and just as Toadie assures her that all will go right, the Christmas lights around the Santa chair blow. Toad goes over to the Men's Shed to grab some that Lou bought in the January sales.
Location of the Storage Container
The K's walk into the shed and Karl stacks the stuff up and they go to leave but uh oh. The door is stuck because Karl parked around the corner instead of in front of the container...and consequently, Toadie drives up and parks his car there and trapped them in. Toadie's car is then trapped in by somebody else parking behind him. When the K's realise, Karl swings his arm outside the gap of the door and they yell out to nobody in particular.
Men's Shed
Toadie is about to open the door to the shed when Kyle opens the door. Toad needs the lights, so Kyle offers to get them and quickly shuts the door. He comes back and hands them over and claims that he's painting the shed with Dane which is why Toad shouldn't come in - the fumes.
Storage Container
Susan keeps banging on the door but nobody is outside. Karl has left his phone in the car, but Susan's phone is in her bag...which is in the car. Susan continues banging but Karl gives up and makes himself comfortable. A little too comfortable, in fact, that Susan becomes a little suspicious that Karl organised it on purpose. He is offended that she would think it and she denies thinking it.
Men's Shed
Toadie comes back knocking, hoping to hang out in the shed while his car is blocked in. Instead of letting him in, Kyle hands Toadie the keys of his Ute. Toadie thanks him and of course we see that Kyle is there with Jade.
Storage Container
Karl is still utterly offended that Susan would think he set up the whole trapped- together- in- storage- container thing.
KARL: We're alone every day in a house with perfectly comfortable furniture!
They stop bickering for the moment and Karl decides to make good use of his time by sorting through the stuff in the container.
Charlie's
Toad returns with the Christmas lights but Sonya freaks out about not having a Santa. Toadie flat out refuses so Sonya/Soph/Callum decides to ask the most unlikely person.
PAUL: I don't do costumes.
CALLUM: You were an elf!
SOPHIE: Yeah, and a baby! Come on, I've seen photos.
Paul's not really fussed about the whinging kids. Sonya runs about and grabs the costume.
Storage Container
Karl's still looking through boxes and finds some stuff from his old flat the last time he and Susan were separated. Susan picks up a leopard print pillowcase that wouldn't look out of place in Lyn Scully's room.
SUSAN: Yeah I never would have chosen these pillowcases.
KARL: What's wrong with them?
SUSAN: (laughs) They scream mid- life crisis!
All sorts of things are being discovered including baby photos and a 10 year old Shiraz. They decide to crack it open and enjoy a tipple.
Number 30
Meanwhile, the trapped Karl has meant that Sonya has had to improvise and be Santa herself. She practices her Ho Ho Ho's in the mirror and it sounds woefully inadequate. Callum and Sophie arrive home to agree with that. Callum is reluctant to watch his mum get "massacred" but Soph drags him out.
Charlie's
Santa Sonya walks in and tries to woo the children but her beard slips off and some whiny kids accuse her of not being real. In to save his girlfriend, Toad the "real santa" arrives and the kids line up. He did pick up the last Santa suit from the fancy dress shop though - the one for winter Christmas - so he requests constant hydration.
Storage Container
The K's are finding plenty of ways to kill time as they get an old projector working and look through happy snaps. Up comes a pic of Libby on her wedding day with Drew.
SUSAN: They were so in love.
Karl looks wistfully at Susan.
Charlie's
Dane comes strolling in because he heard there was free food. Toadie asks him how the painting is going with Kyle but Dane hasn't seen him all day. Speak of the devil, he walks in with Jade and she announces that Dane is leaving Erinsborough. Sonya grabs Toad and Cal for a family photo and drags Jade and Kyle in with them.
Storage Container
The Kennedys are still reminiscing when talk turns to Mal and Catherine.
KARL: Every relationship goes through rough patches. Some worse than others. I think where there's love there's still hope. What about us?
SUSAN: We needed time apart, you were right. I felt so helpless. That empty house, all the people that we had lost along the way. Then along came Jim. He gave me a chance to do something positive, to feel as though I was really making a difference to someone else's life.
KARL: And you did.
SUSAN: I hope so. I know that I had things to deal with and you gave me the space to do that. You gave me time to work all those things through. Thank you.
Susan leans in and they kiss. Karl looks a little surprised and hopeful but when he sees her face, he realises that it was a goodbye kiss.
After the commercial break, they talk about where they should go. Karl thinks the best course of action is to put their recent bickering aside and make a fresh start but Susan is intent to make a clean break rather than try to ease out of the relationship slowly. She announces that she will move out when they get out of there.
