- Jade tells Sonya that she's moving on.
- Jade and Malcolm flirt at the football match.
- Mal tries to arrange a distraction for Karl and Susan.
- Summer worries about her future after slandering a councillor with no evidence.
- Toadie breaks the news to Summer that the council are closing down PirateNet over her allegations.
Summer sits, absolutely mortified what has happened to PirateNet. Meanwhile, the PirateNet office is shown lying empty. The only thing moving is the nodding bird figurine, still nodding away.
Summer looks at her unread retraction script, while at another table, two extras are trying and failing to tune in to PirateNet. Andrew picks up Summer's script and goes to throw it away, but she pulls it back and puts it in her folder. Andrew holds her hand in quiet support.
Mal is leaving a message on Catherine's answerphone as apparently it's impossible to get hold of someone on a mobile for three days straight. Karl tells Mal that he should think about booking a flight home - his life is in London. He and Susan will be fine. However, if Mal is going to stay, Karl thinks he should get out more.
Rhys tells Jade and Dane that he's thinking of having a barbecue this afternoon. Jade says it's fine as long as the food isn't paid for out of their kitty(!) and Dane goes off to buy a gas bottle.
Garden of No.26
Dane gets out the gas bottle for the barbecue and Mal leans over the fence to say hello and introduce himself. He offers Dane some advice.
Jade realises that the barbecue is a practice run for the big schmooze of the surgeons next time, and Rhys doesn't deny it. He says she can invite her mates too - like Kate, Sonya...or Mal Kennedy.
Garden of No.26
Mal is helping Dane to prepare the barbecue hot plate.
RHYS: I played golf with Mal last week. Nice bloke.
JADE: Yeah, he's alright.
RHYS: Hmm. Not the same as the games you've been playing with him, of course.
JADE: What are you talking about?
RHYS: Do I really have to say it out loud?
JADE: OK, Rhys, this little conversation we're having, this is because you know me. I flirt with Mal because I flirt with anyone.
RHYS: You don't flirt with me.
JADE: That's because I don't like you.
RHYS:(unfazed) Which means you do like Mal.
JADE:(irritated) OK, I'm going to go and do the shopping, you can pay me back later.
She stalks out. Rhys just smiles quietly.
Garden of No.26
Dane invites Mal to come to the barbecue and he accepts.
Kate talking into Sophie's answerphone when Noah comes in and sits down. Jade comes in for barbecue food which is conveniently located on the magic shelf! She invites Kate to the barbecue, saying she needs to be with people her own age, not Sophie and Lou!
KATE: I don't hang out with Lou that much.
JADE: Kate, you called me "sunshine" the other day!
Kate says she'll think about coming to the barbecue. In the background, Noah is staring, doe- eyed, at Kate.
The party is in full swing and Rhys bosses Dane around about the cooking.
DANE: (to Aidan, a nurse) Is he this bad at work?
AIDAN: I wouldn't have a clue. He doesn't talk to us at work.
RHYS: Hey, that's not true, I tell you when you've stuffed up!
Jade goes to answer the door, and it's Kate. She's pleased to see her, but not so much Mal, who comes in a few moments later. Mal explains to Rhys that Dane invited him. Jade just glowers. Kate and Mal go off to the kitchen for a beer, leaving Rhys with Jade.
RHYS: So, are you going to be alright?
JADE: Yeah, why wouldn't I be?
RHYS: Mal, you didn't want him here.
JADE: I never said that, you did.
RHYS: Yeah, right, Just remember...
JADE: Yes, your barbecue, I know...
RHYS: I don't want any dramas...
JADE: Then stop making one!
Summer is packing her stuff into a box. No- one else is around.
Andrew tells Paul that he manipulated Summer and now he should make it right.
PAUL: She didn't check the facts of her story and she's paid the price! She was driven purely by ambition.
ANDREW: And who's the one that's done the best out of it, huh?
PAUL: Yeah! This helps me! And I'll be damned if I'm going to apologise for it! See, I'm looking out for this community...
ANDREW: No, you're not, Dad, you're looking out for yourself.
PAUL: Yeah, myself and my family. Of which you are a part.
ANDREW: What about Summer's career? Does that just get thrown under the bus, does it?
PAUL: Oh, stop being so melodramatic, Andrew, her career's going to be just fine.
ANDREW: OK, can you guarantee that?
PAUL: She is a smart girl...
ANDREW: Dad, can you guarantee it? No. Come on, you're partly to blame for this. You know you are. You've got to help me fix it.
As Summer leaves PirateNet, she places a mug behind the nodding bird, stopping it from nodding.
Andrew is trying to reassure Summer. Susan comes in and asks Summer why she didn't check her sources.
SUSAN: I suppose this is just a lesson you've had to learn the hard way.
Susan does think that they may be able to get the council to see that shutting PirateNet was a knee- jerk reaction, though.
Paul comes in and Andrew glares at him. Paul's conscience seems a little pricked.
Mal asks Jade if she's avoiding him. He asks her about the book club and thinks she put Sonya up to asking Susan to start one. She assures him she had nothing to do with it, and breezes off to talk to Aidan. Aidan notices Mal glowering their way and introduces himself. Then Jade drags him off to put on a Spice Girls CD for a joke.
Garden of No.26
Dane is tending the barbecue while Mal glowers at Jade and Aidan. Rhys notices the glowering and looks knowingly at both Mal and Jade. But then he's distracted by Aidan putting the Spice Girls on! He threatens Aidan with changing colostomy bags for the whole of his next shift!
Rhys goes over to Mal who is standing at the barbecue.
MAL: Those two are getting cosy.
RHYS: Girls and their handbags, eh?
Mal just looks at him.
RHYS: Mate, Aidan's gay!
Mal looks rather relieved. (Er Mal, you do remember you're married, right?)
Rhys sits down for a chat with Kate. Dane is handing chicken skewers around. When Rhys has gone, Jade comes in for a chat with Kate. She tells her that the History Wall is looking great.
JADE: So, Noah's good at music *and* art? No wonder Soph like him.
KATE: Lots of kids contributed to the wall.
JADE: Yeah, well he's going to get all the girls when he leaves high school and they realise that talent is actually cool.
KATE:(uncomfortable) Yep, OK, Jade.
KATE: No, I'm sorry. I'm just missing Sophie, that's all.
She suggests going for something to eat.
Outside the Erinsborough News
Paul calls Summer and Andrew over. He apologises for the way things turned out, although he was still within his rights as a journalist(!) Summer is not impressed and goes to walk off.
PAUL: Summer, the people in charge of your future don't care about some small- time student radio station that doesn't have an audience.
SUMMER: So everyone keeps telling me but...
PAUL: It's your folio that counts.
SUMMER: I don't *have* a folio anymore, Paul!
PAUL: You've still got the History Wall story. I'd like to help you spruce it up.
He holds out a key.
SUMMER: What's this?
PAUL: The keys to the paper's online edit suite. Yours to use whenever you want. I'll even get someone to help you with the editing if you like. Time- lapse stuff can be a bit tricky.
ANDREW: Thanks, Dad, that's good.
PAUL: It's alright son, it's the least I can do.
But Summer pushes the key back to Paul and walks off.
Susan finds Summer crying on the sofa. Andrew comes in looking for her. He tells her she should take Paul's offer. She insists that she doesn't want Paul's help.
SUMMER: This is not about your dad, and this is not about my folio. I am the reason that PirateNet's been shut down!
ANDREW: You made a mistake, that's it!
SUMMER: A big mistake! I was in there before and it was so empty, and that is all my fault! I wrecked it for everyone. So unless your Dad can fix that...
She walks off sadly to her room.
Mal saunters up to Jade and baits her about Aidan a bit. He also baits her about the soccer match.
MAL: Do you play much?
JADE: Oh, only since Rhys moved in.
MAL:(sidling up to her) So, Rhys did tell you that it's not a contact sport, right?
JADE: I know how to play soccer.
MAL: Fair enough. You're not going to try to tackle me now?
JADE: I think you're pretty safe!
Mal reaches into a bowl.
MAL: Want a chip?
JADE: I can get my own chip.
She reaches into the bowl and their hands meet.
MAL: So, is this a contact sport too, is it?
Jade says nothing. Mal is distracted by a text message arriving.
JADE: Bad news?
JADE: Your wife?
MAL: Still playing phone tag.
Aidan comes up to get a chip.
JADE: You should make that phone call.
Jade walks off with Aidan.
Andrew is watching Summer's time- lapse footage of the History Wall on her laptop and tells her it's really good. He thinks she should do it for her folio piece. She should prioritise her exams and put PirateNet out of her mind.
ANDREW: I'm not going to go to Uni by myself!
SUMMER: You won't have to.
On the computer screen, unseen by Summer and Andrew, the footage and Kate and Noah kissing flashes up. Andrew closes the lid of the laptop from behind.
Mal is talking to Catherine's answerphone, saying he'd like to talk to her before she leaves for Paris and leaves him for a sexy waiter.
Jade comes into his mind and a few flashbacks are shown.
JADE: "Next time, neither of us will be disappointed. I can guarantee that."
He looks rather conflicted, but picks up his phone and texts Jade. "Playing hard to get...got me."
He pauses, hesitant to press "Send".
A few minutes later, Mal is still debating with himself when Karl comes in. He asks Mal if he's managed to get hold of Catherine yet. Karl is pleased to hear that Mal has been out to a barbecue, but suspicious when he hears Jade was there. Mal invites Karl to stay for a drink and Karl agrees.
While Karl is at the bar, Mal sends the text to Jade.
