No.26
Jade comes in, on the phone to one of her clients. As she puts the phone down, a strange bloke wanders through the living room.
STRANGE BLOKE: How's it goin'
JADE:(shocked) Who the hell are you?
STRANGE BLOKE: Oh, sorry...Dane.
He holds out his hand.
JADE: No, no, no, I mean what the hell are you doing in my house?
DANE:(confused) Didn't Kyle mention anything?
JADE: Right, right, so you're a friend of Kyle's?
DANE: No, I'm his cousin, Dane. Dane Canning.
He holds out his hand again.
JADE: Where's Kyle?!
DANE: Oh, he'll be halfway to Franga by now.
He wanders off into the kitchen.
JADE:(following him) Franga?
DANE: Oh, Frankston. Man, he is so slack. I'm so sorry, it must have just looked like I'd taken over your whole house.
JADE: ...
DANE: But I've made you lunch, made you a chicken sanger...sorted myself out with a Dane special.
JADE: Why, why has Kyle gone to Frankston?
DANE: He's lookin' after his mum.
JADE:(concerned) What's wrong with his mum?
DANE: Oh, she's crook as. But it's self- inflicted if you ask me. Cos she went over to Thailand to get some work done...
He indicates his chest.
DANE: ...cos it's way cheaper over there...and she's come back with malaria. So someone has to look after her while she gets better, so Kyle took off this morning. And he needs someone here to look after the business so...we just did a house swap.
JADE: House swap?
DANE: Yeah...here we go...
JADE: ...
DANE: He's not completely useless.
He hands Jade a sheet of paper.
JADE: ...Dane, is it?
DANE: Yeah.
JADE: Dane, I don't know what Kyle told you, but you can't stay here.
DANE: Nah, it's all sorted.
He fishes some money out of his pocket.
DANE: Is that going to cover this month's rent?
Jade is speechless.
DANE: And Kyle told us about the roster...that's no drama. Also, I'm a bit of a foodie...so I will use the kitchen...I probably will make a bit of a mess, but I do clean up after myself. Hey, um, can we get a decent coffee around here?
Harold's Store
Jade and Dane come in.
JADE: Just a latte please.
DANE: Cappuccino, thanks, five sugars.
Jade just looks at him.
DANE: What, I need the energy!
Jade introduces Dane to Summer and he admires her laptop.
DANE: You flash something like that about where I'm from, it's not lasting long!
Summer looks a bit confused, especially when Dane goes on to tell her about an "outbreak" of malaria in Frankston(!) Dane goes off to get his coffee and Jade sees Summer's face.
JADE:(through gritted teeth) I know. I have to live with it!
Sonya comes in and Jade introduces her.
DANE:(with hostility) Yeah, I know who she is. You're shacked up with the dude who's trying to stuff Kyle's business.
SONYA: Excuse me?
JADE: Dane!
DANE: Sonya Mitchell, yeah, Kyle's filled me in.
SONYA:(stunned) Wha...? (to Jade) Would someone like to fill me in here?
JADE: Yeah, Dane is Kyle's cousin.
DANE: Yeah, and I'm his eyes and his ears while he's lookin' after Auntie Sharon.
SONYA: Oh, did something happen to Kyle's mum?
DANE: Which means, I know about the development, and who's out to get him.
SONYA: We're not out to get Kyle, we're his friends.
DANE: Oh yeah? Ex- friends is what I hear.
He swigs from his coffee cup. Sonya is speechless.
DANE: That's a good cuppa java. Anyways, I've got a business to run.
He stares pointedly at Sonya and then walks out of the shop.
SONYA: Is that guy for real?!
No.28
Susan is calling Karl, but she can't get hold of him. When Mal comes home, Susan rants that Karl is needed at home to meet the telephone people. Mal says he can hang around. Susan continues to rant about Karl.
Dial- A- Kyle
Dane is on the phone to Lou, who is obviously dubious at Dane filling in for Kyle(!)
Dane sees a surveyor and goes over to speak to him.
DANE: What are youse doing here? Is it to do with the shopping centre?
SURVEYOR: What if it is?
DANE: Well, you can pack up and go, cos noone around here wants your development.
SURVEYOR: Is that right?
DANE: Yeah, it is.
SURVEYOR: Mate, we're just doing our jobs.
DANE: Yeah, and if this shopping centre goes ahead, everyone around here loses theirs.
SURVEYOR: Not much I can do about it, mate. I just go where they tell me.
DANE: So this is all just going to be a car park.
SURVEYOR: That's what they tell me.
DANE: Yeah, it's all about the money.
SURVEYOR: Course it is! It's the council! Dodgy as.
DANE: You reckon the council's dodgy?
SURVEYOR: You didn't hear it from me. But word is, the developers for this shopping centre have got the developers in their pockets. Have a look at the time frame. This development was pushed through a hell of a lot quicker than it should have been. And money talks.
School
Noah comes up to Kate as if nothing has happened and wishes her good luck with her assessment.
NOAH: I just want to support you. You're amazing.
Kate's tutor comes up and she goes into her assessment.
In class, Kate starts off talking about the Russian Revolution, but she's distracted by Noah looking doe- eyed at her. She starts to lose her concentration and the kids start to giggle. Kate starts flashing back to times she's met Noah. Summer sees that Kate is flustered and tries to help, but she keeps flashing back to scenes with Noah.
KATE: Excuse me.
She walks out, closely followed by her tutor.
In the corridor, Kate tells her tutor that she got dizzy. and needs to get some air.
Pub
Karl is beating Rhys at darts, much to his pleasure(!) Susan comes in to henpeck Karl about the telephone technician. He says he thought it was tomorrow.
RHYS: Would you like a drink, Susan?
SUSAN: NO!!!!! Er...thank you, sorry.
Susan tells Karl off for not answering his mobile. But he says that anyway, he's busy discussing new diagnostic techniques with Rhys(!) Susan tells Karl that he'd better get home straightaway.
(Later)
Dane comes up and introduces himself to Paul and Susan, who are sitting at a table.
DANE: Got a little bit of information...that might stop the shopping centre going through.
PAUL: All right, I'm all ears.
DANE: What if I was to tell you that the Council was a little bit dodgy?
PAUL: I'd say, where's your proof?
DANE: Seems the Council have accepted a bribe to push the development through.
PAUL: Is that right, who told you that?
DANE: I told him I'd keep him out of it. He just said to look at the dates in the development plan.
PAUL: Interesting.
Susan points out that they can't run anything until they're sure of the facts. Dane is disappointed.
When Dane has gone, Paul says that Susan had better start digging.
Outside the classroom
Kate's tutor tells her that she's going to have to fail her on her assessment, unless she can give her some kind of explanation.
NOAH:(coming up) I can explain.
KATE: No, Noah...go back to class.
NOAH: No, not until I've told the truth.
KATE: Right now.
NOAH: Kate, it's for your own good.
JANET: What have you got to say?
KATE: Noah, don't.
NOAH: Well, Kate has found out that her ex- boyfriend has died.
JANET: Is this truth.
Kate nods.
JANET: Oh, Kate, why didn't you say something?!
KATE: ...I hadn't really told anyone.
Janet sends Noah back to class and tells Kate that they'll re- schedule her assessment.
In the classroom, later
Summer comes up and asks Kate if she's alright. She says it's just a bug. When Summer's gone, Noah comes up.
KATE:(angrily) We needs to get a few things clear.
NOAH: Sure.
KATE: You need to back off.
NOAH: Someone needed to stick up for you back there!
KATE: It's not your place! And I'm not just talking about my assessment, OK, I'm talking about this whole thing.
NOAH: You don't have to say any more, I get it.
KATE: Do you?
NOAH: Sure.
KATE: Look, there are rules against students and teachers, OK, I could get into a lot of trouble.
NOAH: Look, I know you're upset, but don't tell me you didn't feel it too.
KATE: I got caught up in the moment! And I know that's no excuse, but it was wrong.
NOAH: It didn't feel wrong.
KATE: Yeah, well, it is. So that's it, OK. No more text messages, no more notes, no more anything. I'm your teacher, and that's it. Have I made myself clear?
Noah nods.
KATE: Good, you can go now.
He gives her a lingering look from the door.
No.28
Susan is on the phone trying to get hold of a few councillors. She calls out to Karl, but he's still not there. Mal gives her a card - the telephone company called while there was noone in. She starts moaning about Karl again.
MAL: Come on, Mum, you can't rely on him like you used to.
SUSAN: Why not? He's still lives here!
MAL: Yes, but you're not together anymore. So maybe you need to stop acting like you are.
SUSAN:(shocked) I don't!
MAL: Still sharing a house, Mum.
SUSAN: For the moment! But we're managing.
MAL: Mum, you're not a couple anymore. You can't expect him to be here for you when you want him to be, and he can't expect the same of you. He's just finding his way. He's just trying to be a single man again.
Pub
Sonya comes in and Paul comes over to her. He tells her triumphantly that the latest rumour is that the council has taken bribery to push the development through. Sonya tells him flatly that it's not true.
Harold's Store
Dane is ordering yet another coffee, much to Jade's disgust. He says they don't have coffee like it in Franga! Jade introduces Dane to a frazzled Kate.
DANE: Yeah, I can see what he sees in you!
JADE: Um, Dane is staying with us for a while. It's a very long story.
But after shaking hands, Kate rushes off.
DANE: Don't worry, I would never go there. Kyle would kill me!
Dane wanders over to Summer who is looking for songs for her PirateNet show. He says that he's heard Summer has a radio show and he's got a story for her - but she'll have to get it checked out first.
DANE: It's about corruption in the local Council. Apparently they've accepted bribes to rush through the approval for the shopping centre.
SUMMER: Are you serious?
DANE: How else would they get it through so quick?
SUMMER: Right, well who told you about this?
DANE: Someone with inside info.
SUMMER: Someone reliable?
DANE: Yeah. They've got no reason to tell porkies.
SUMMER: This could sink the whole development.
DANE: I know. And save Kyle's business.
SUMMER: Well, I don't need anymore songs when I put this on PirateNet! Thanks, Dane.
DANE: No worries!
(Later)
Paul comes in, on the phone to his lawyers. They tell him that the Erinsborough News can't run the corruption story yet, not until there's more proof. Paul sees Dane and tells him the story is a no go. Dane says he gave the scoop to Summer too and she's going to run it on her radio show today.
PAUL: Good, good.
DANE: But you've missed out!
PAUL: No, I haven't. No, it's a win- win. You see, I checked with my sources and it seems that the story is unfounded. It's just gossip from rival developers. But if Summer wants to run the story...I'm very, very happy to re- print the allegations in the form of unbiased thorough coverage.
DANE: But you're saying it's not true.
PAUL: No, I'm saying I can't verify it one way or the other. But by the time they find that out, public opinion will have turned against the development. We'll have all won.
DANE: Well, what's going to happen to Summer when it turns out the rumours are a pack of lies?
PAUL: I'm sure Summer knows the importance of checking the facts!
DANE: I'm gonna warn her.
He gets up.
PAUL: Oh no, wait. Do you want the shopping centre to go ahead or not?
DANE: Well, no, of course I don't.
PAUL: Well, then, keep your mouth shut and let the broadcast go ahead.
