Simmons & Colberts/Number 30
It's the day of the auction for the Community Garden and Toadie does his best to calm Sonya down and trying to reassure her that everything is in place for them to place a successful winning bid. He promises to see her there once he gets through the mound of paperwork sitting on his desk.
Karl gets a call just as he arrives on his bike for work however it sadly isn't Susan, but Mal and both appear not to have heard from Susan.
Rhys approaches Karl and mentions he has some papers for Susan (regarding Jim's palliative care) and doesn't expect Karl telling them to post them to Susan and is almost astonished to then hear him apologise for stepping on his toes – he wouldn't have liked that happening to him either.
Lucas and Sonya arrive at the garden and spot the opposition and she starts to freak big time although does composes herself by the time she meets Gary the auctioneer. They do the intros and she asks him some tentative questions about the bidding/who is bidding and he replies openly before leaving her to it. “Now I really feel sick,” she remarks to Lucas and he thinks nervous energy is a good thing if its channelled properly and reassures her that she can to it without Toadie (she just gets his voicemail when calling him).
Despite pacing around waiting for Tash to enter the house, he acts all cool when he spots her heading into the house. Tash tries to do a runner to her room but he calls out to her and she nervously walks into the livingroom. He then coolly tells her that he's cancelled the deposit and the card and may yet report it to the police. To her surprise doesn't actually say anything about the plastic surgery, “I don't think you need it,” he almost sarcastically replies back when she asks although follows that up a few seconds later by adding, “not with my money”. She then seeks his consent since she is underage however is told that she can wait a couple more months until she is 18 then can go ahead herself.
“If she makes a move I'll pounce,” Jade threatens whilst they wait for Gary to end the auction after some late last- minute bidding from a silent woman. Thankfully to Lucas and Jade's relief, Sonya is the winning bidder with an offer of $442,000. Just as Gary comes over to talk to Sonya she does a runner and Jade covers, telling him she's just off to call her partner (Toadie missed the auction). Sonya returns a few months later looking rather deathly white but plays it down and goes to find Gary to sign the contract.
Jade walks into the house, moments after Sonya, wanting to set up a party to celebrate her winning the auction. She seems almost surprised that Sonya doesn't want to celebrate the win but leaves to get supplies and Sonya resumes what she was trying to do when Jade entered – find when her last period was and then realises that she is late.
Commercial break later and Jade comes back with the supplies and nonchalantly asks what they are celebrating.
SONYA: I think I'm pregnant.
Jade certainly wasn't expecting that (pardon the pun!) and Sonya explains that she is really late and that she threw up too. “Is this a good thing or a bad thing?” Jade asks and Sonya replies emphatically “bad”. Jade seems somewhat surprised at that and reminds her that things would be different this time however Sonya is already looking for excuses beginning with Toadie's new job.
SONYA: He hasn't said anything but I know I know its stressing him out and he's so tired. I've just bought the garden. How am I supposed to have a baby and start a new business? This couldn't have happened at a worse time. I CANNOT BE PREGNANT.
Kate literally runs into Rhys after dropping off an invoice and he mentions he's here for a drink but doesn't plan on buying her one even if she didn't have to leave to head to work! He does however shout Karl one when he comes in to place an order and they sit and watch the golf being shown on the television.
Number 32/Harold's Store
Michael reverts to his favourite pastime when he's stressed – listening to his beloved albums. As The Badloves' ‘lost' begins we see him sitting on the sofa pondering things whilst in the store Tash sits looking at the pics on her phone of Michael and herself. Michael then picks up the album and whilst he is taking out the inner sleeve, something falls to the floor – a photograph. And in the store, the tears begin to flow down Tash's face before we return to see the photo that fell out – one that is obviously of Michael, Tash and Mrs Williams taken a long time ago before he like Tash too, breaks down crying.
The lyrics of the song have so blended into the mood of this scene better than any words could have done as we head into the next commercial break.
Kate catches up with Michael as he is carrying some of his albums outside to tell him about Tash crying at the store (she looked really concerned for Tash). He coolly replies that Tash is responsible for herself and it's none of his concern. Kate is astonished at his attitude and puts 2+2 together about the talk they had before trying to point out that Tash needs him.
MICHAEL: I'm sorry Kate; the last thing I want is parent advice from someone who's not much older than my daughter.
KATE: I'm just trying to help.
MICHAEL: Why because you've so much experience dealing with troubled teens?
KATE: I've got Sophie.
MICHAEL: (scoffing) Well come see me in three years time and let me know how you're doing with her.
KATE: Hey, it doesn't take a parent to figure out that Tash is a troubled kid.
MICHAEL: So what do you suggest Kate?
MICHAEL: You don't think that I've tried everything that I can think of? It doesn't matter what I do, she just keeps pushing and pushing. I can't tell any more if she needs my help or just gets off on all the attention.
Kate suggests that he talks to her and he replies exasperatedly that he has and doesn't like her suggestion of talking again to her, instead telling Kate to back off and go home angrily adding that Kate has no idea what she is talking about.
Karl hears from a call with Mal that Susan has made contact. Rhys arrives into the complex just as Karl is finishing the call and complements him not on his cycling gear!
RHYS: You wouldn't get me in lycra.
KARL: Yes, not everyone can carry it off.
RHYS: Not everyone wants to!
I think that one gives Rhys his first point in the trading insults with Karl but as they meander though the complex, they do seem to bond over their mutual appreciation of golf and agree to play a round together.
Over a cuppa with Jade, Sonya contemplates what might happen if she is indeed pregnant and how Toadie would like it if she were. “I just don't know if I could do it,” she admits citing her new business and Toadie's new job. Jade urges her to talk to Toadie and that she should do a pregnancy test to see if she is pregnant or not. Sonya mentions that she wants to be here for when Toadie comes home because he has a surprise for her. “Who's going to get the bigger surprise!” Jade responds with and volunteers despite Sonya's protestations to go buy the test.
SONYA: No, I can handle it.
JADE: Sonya, the only way to handle this is to tell him.
Toadie is caught up in traffic on the way home but seems very happy at Sonya's surprise pressie which is lying on the back seat of the car as he bops his head along to the beat of the music playing.
Toadie carries in the surprise pressie for Sonya. He apologises for missing the auction and hands over the pressie – a very heavy piece of wood with ‘Sonya's Nursery' painted in green paint. She is very happy at the pressie but Toadie can sense something is up (and using puns like ‘baby') but she just plays on the fact it's been a big day and she is tried.
TOADIE: This is our time baby, me and my new job, you and your nursery. Nothing's going to stop us now.
