- Toadie calling Doug to the stand and earning Steph's anger
Number 26
Steph rushes inside, locks the door and dumps her handbag, then quickly retrieves a brown bag from her room. She gets a text from Libby about the trial, but she ignores it and takes out Adam's baby blanket from the satchel. Bursting into tears, Steph holds the blanket up to her chest and hugs it tightly.
Number 32
Natasha pesters her dad into getting takeaway for dinner because she's too busy fretting over the social to help him with cooking and dishes. Michael agrees on one condition - they get the food from Charlie's instead of Harold's.
Charlie's Bar
Rebecca's on the phone to Paul telling him that she's got his dry cleaning but she doesn't know when she'll be home. Andrew's also on the phone to Summer, talking about DJs for the social, but he hangs up when Summer says she wants to spend time with Steph. Rebecca asks Andrew when he'll have time for studying with all this social stuff, reminding him his prac exams weren't that great, but Andrew says he'll be fine, "I always do good in the end".
Rebecca's mood lifts when Michael, and Natasha, call in to pick up their takeaway. She's extra pleased when Michael loans her an Aussie music DVD he thought she might like. They fall into a nostalgic musical haze until Natasha brings them back to earth, complaining that she's hungry. Rebecca can't help beaming at Michael when he leaves.
Number 22 - Rebecca and Paul's Room
Rebecca casts aside the duvet that's concealing the single beds and nudges them apart. She dumps Paul's dry cleaning on his bed and stares at what her life has become, before remembering something that puts a smile back on her face - the music DVD from Michael.
Harold's Store - Next Morning
Natasha gives Sophie a serve for not selling enough tickets for the social. She reminds her that if the social's a flop then everyone will think she's a loser, so she sends Sophie off on a ticket selling mission (wouldn't it just be easier at school?).
Toadie notices Callum staring after Sophie and realises they're still fighting, "No wonder you've been grumpy". Callum reminds Toadie he hasn't been a ray of sunshine lately either. He goes off to wait in the car before Scout Group so he can practice his knots.
Michael bumps into Libby and is in an unusually good mood with her, not even minding that she didn't get to look at exam questions while she was away. He asks if he can help her with anything and Libby says that Andrew could use a tutor. Michael casually says he'll talk to "Bec" about it before realising how familiar that sounds and amending it to "Rebecca and Paul". He quickly scurries away.
Libby sits with Toadie and asks how Steph is. Toadie admits yesterday was pretty rough; on top of the trial she's still trying to deal with Adam and her depression. Libby wishes she could help and Toadie says that she is - her testimony is vital to the case. Libby, however, thinks she can do more: "Maybe we both can".
Charlie's Bar
Rebecca teases Michael for getting his coffee from Lyn instead of her and tells him to come to Charlie's next time, she owes him for the music DVD.
REBECCA: It brought back some really great memories. Michael Hutchence in those tight leather pants...
MICHAEL: Never mind the pants, what about the songs? So many classics!
REBECCA: Yeah, 'I Need You Tonight'.
MICHAEL: 'New Sensation' and 'Wide Open Road'.
REBECCA: Which one?
MICHAEL: The Triffids. The one with the crazy jealous guy who hunts down his lover and her new boyfriend.
REBECCA: Oh, uh, I don't listen to the lyrics...
Michael says he dropped by because Libby told him about Andrew needing tutoring. Rebecca wonders if there's enough time before exams but Michael thinks a few private tutoring sessions will do the trick. He gets on the phone to some contacts he knows to get the ball rolling, earning another warm smile from Rebecca.
Number 22
Andrew's doing the sums for the social, noting to Summer that the figures aren't looking good, but Summer's too busy fidgeting and looking like she'd rather be anywhere but in his presence. When Rebecca walks in with Michael, Summer springs up and says she has to work for Lyn at the store this afternoon. Rebecca and Michael play tag- team with Andrew to try and convince him that he needs tutoring. Andrew finally relents when Rebecca says that Paul knows about it and is all for it. As it turns out, Michael's going to be Andrew's tutor because everyone else was booked up over the exam period.
Number 22 - Rebecca and Paul's Room
Rebecca's making the single beds when Michael accidentally wanders in looking for the bathroom. There's an awkward moment when they both realise he's stumbled onto something private before he quickly retreats to find the right room.
First Commercial Break
Number 22 - Rebecca and Paul's Room
Rebecca catches Michael before he heads back downstairs so she can 'explain' the bedroom situation. She tells him that it's just easier for Paul during his recuperation so they don't disturb one another while they sleep.
REBECCA: It's not like some 50s Doris Day film, we do push them together occasionally.
MICHAEL: It's fine, really, it's nothing to do with me.
REBECCA: I know that but I wouldn't like you to get the wrong idea.
MICHAEL: I'm really not one to judge.
REBECCA: Thanks.
Michael walks out and the camera pans across to reveal Rebecca's downtrodden face in the full- length mirror.
Number 22
Michael tells Andrew that they've done enough studying for the day and hands him some practice exam questions to finish by tomorrow. Andrew goes out the back just as Rebecca walks downstairs. She's glad to hear the first session went well and says that things have been difficult at home since Paul's accident for everyone. Michael can't help looking sorry for her.
MICHAEL: You know that open door policy I've got with the students? Well it also extends to parents, so if you need to talk...
REBECCA: Thank you, I will keep that in mind.
Harold's Store
Natasha's chasing Summer around the shop while she's trying to work, laughing about how funny it is that her dad's tutoring Andrew. She finds a new victim in Sophie when she returns from her ticket selling mission, pleased to hear that she's sold ten. When Natasha's out of earshot Summer sympathetically asks how many Sophie really sold. "One, to me," Sophie mutters, "against my will".
Toadie praises Callum about his new badge when they return from his Scout meeting. They see Sophie sitting by herself and Toadie gives Cal money to get both of them a drink. Callum thinks it's useless because Sophie hates him, "I told you, we're finished". Steph finds Toadie, hoping he didn't call her to talk about the trial. But Toadie actually wants to speak to her about getting joint custody of Adam - he's got the forms with him and everything. Steph's upset, even more so when she discovers it was Libby's idea as well, and runs out of the shop.
Number 26
Steph's furiously vacuuming when Libby stops by for a chat. Libby honestly thought Steph would be onboard for getting joint custody of Adam, and she thinks that Dan wouldn't mind either.
STEPH: It's not about Dan.
LIBBY: Steph I know you, I know you want this. Why won't you at least consider it?
STEPH: I am considering it.
LIBBY: Then what's the problem?
STEPH: It's you alright!
LIBBY: Me?
STEPH: Well think about it, Libby. How would you feel if you saw Adam here in my arms? The baby I had with your ex- husband. The baby you wanted. Do you really think you could handle that? (Libby looks upset) No, I didn't think so.
Second Commercial Break
Number 26
Steph tells Libby that she doesn't want to lose her friendship again, but if it's going to be too hard for her to see her with Adam then Steph's only option is to move away. A sad look crosses Libby's face.
LIBBY: You'd seriously leave your home?
STEPH: I want my baby back. And I can't celebrate because I'm scared it means the end of this.
LIBBY: I don't want you to leave.
STEPH: (looking hopeful) Are you sure?
LIBBY: It won't be easy but we'll work through it like we always do. (They smile at one another) Now can I call Toadie and tell him to get things moving?
STEPH: You're so pushy! Anyone ever tell you that?
LIBBY: Yeah, every guy I've ever dated, my family, work colleagues, close friends, mid- level friends, causal friends - even random strangers.
Steph is grateful and grabs Libby for a hug.
Number 32
Michael's pleased that Andrew has already done all of his tutoring homework, but Andrew's smug bubble is burst when he realises Michael still has more work for him. Natasha strolls in with Cat and teases Andrew about being a teacher's pet.
NATASHA: Unconventional teacher mentors wayward student, just like that tragic old film you love.
MICHAEL: Tash, I mean it.
NATASHA: I can picture it right now. Andrew up on the table, "Oh Captain, my Captain!"
Michael tells his daughter to quiet down and reminds Andrew they've got another tutoring meeting tomorrow afternoon. When he leaves, Natasha decides to play around with Andrew and teases him about wanting to be close to her again. She wraps her arms around his neck and pretends to go in for a kiss, pulling away at the last second claiming she's too busy for hook- ups at the moment. Looking annoyed, Andrew leaves and Natasha bemoans her crappy 'playing hard to get' plan.
Ramsay Street
Andrew nearly gets hit in the head with a stray football when Summer misses the kick from Toadie and Callum's end of the street. Andrew just smiles and hands it back to her before heading home. Summer tries to kick it but nearly ends up getting Sophie, who's taking her bike out for a spin. Toadie invites her to stay and play. She looks tempted but ends up saying no and riding off. Steph joins them and happily tells Toadie that she's decided to go for joint custody of Adam after all.
STEPH: I've really got you to thank for that. Bringing it all up in court, it was rough, but it really got me thinking about some stuff.
TOADIE: Finally, a little bit of love for the legal counsel! And don't worry about what happened with Doctor Doug, OK? We have other witnesses.
STEPH: Just do whatever it takes to keep me out of jail. Because when this case is done I'm going to go see my baby.
TOADIE: (grinning) Welcome back, buddy!
They smile and hug one another tightly.
Number 22
Rebecca's doing the ironing when Andrew claims that he's done with tutoring. She reminds him he's nowhere near ready for exams. Andrew says if he has to have tutoring then he wants another teacher - apparently Michael's "up himself" and acts all superior. Rebecca just tells him to get over it because Michael's doing him a favour, so Andrew gets bratty and says he's going to call Paul, "He wouldn't force me to do something I don't want to do". Rebecca watches him strut out, looks at the ironing and just gets a look of 'I so can't be stuffed with all of this anymore' on her face. Taking out her phone she calls Michael and says she could really use that chat.
Third Commercial Break
Charlie's Bar
Rebecca brings over coffees for her and Michael, telling him it's a Fairtrade blend from East Timor - that way he won't go to Lyn for coffees anymore. They stare at one another for a beat before Rebecca asks if it's weird that she wants to chat to him. Michael replies that it's fine, it's just two mates chatting.
REBECCA: I don't know I just feel strange. Ordinarily I'd talk to Susan or even Lyn, but sometimes they're just too close to everything. You know what I mean? (Michael nods, waiting for her to continue). That stuff with the beds, I made that up, but you know that don't you. Paul and I... It's not good.
MICHAEL: Every marriage has its low points. With everything you and your family have just been through it's no wonder.
REBECCA: (getting upset) I keep having this dream that I'm underwater and I can see people moving about on top, and I try to call out but I can't make a sound. I just feel alone.
MICHAEL: (gently) Well you're not. And maybe if you and Paul got some counselling you could work this out.
REBECCA: It's gone so far beyond that, believe me.
MICHAEL: So why are you still there? (She doesn't answer) Bec?
REBECCA: Because he won't let me go.
Preview
(Tomorrow on Neighbours)
LYN: I am setting up a blood donation drive at the hospital. It's kind of a memorial.
KARL: The mother of the woman who killed Ringo...
SUSAN: (to Lyn) Maybe you need to step back?
LYN: Step back?
(Rebecca chats with Michael some more)
REBECCA: Some days are harder than others.
MICHAEL But if you're unhappy...
(Kate and Declan have a 'moment' while he teaches her how to drive)
KATE: But he's in my past and I'm never going there again.
(Detective Brennan walks into Harold's)
DONNA: It's a sign!
KATE: No it's not.
DONNA: Declan's in your past and then who should walk in but your future!
(Declan sees Kate and Brennan chatting and gets jealous)
DECLAN: I'm free now if you want another lesson?
(Donna explains what's what to Kate)
DONNA: They were showing off to impress you. But you don't actually like either of them?
