Recap
Toadie proposing to Steph so he can be her next of kin and not Lyn; Lyn unhappy with the news of their engagement
Naomi calling Ringo and then ending up in hospital after falling victim to a hit and run, then berating him for his lack of help.
Ringo asking Karl if he thinks he's cut out for life as a paramedic and Karl admitting he has a long way to go. Ringo decides to quit.
Ramsay Street
Susan is angry with Karl for contributing to Ringo giving up the course. Donna, Libby and Zeke listen in as Karl says not everyone is cut out for a medicine and Susan laments over how hard Ringo worked to get into the course in the first place. Karl thinks if it's important enough to him he'll stick with it. But then a morose Ringo, in his bath robe, comes out to pick the newspaper and Zeke asks if Karl's sure about that.
Harold's Store
Karl has gone to hide out from his family, sitting behind a strategically positioned bread stand to shield himself. Zeke, Donna, Susan and Declan walk in, discussing Ringo. Donna says they won't let him bail out of the course just because of Naomi but then Karl pipes up from behind the bread stand that Naomi wasn't the problem, but a symptom of the problem. Susan retorts that Ringo's lack of professional confidence was made worse by Karl and that's why Karl's in hiding. Karl denies this. Donna reminds them that it's the rest of Ringo's life they're talking about and Karl thinks that's why it's important to make the right choice. Susan asks if he's ever doubted himself as a doctor. This makes Karl get up and join them, saying it's Ringo's choice to make. Donna's adamant that Ringo can do it because he's an "amazing, determined, passionate guy with the biggest heart ever". Everyone stares at her as she quickly adds she is only saying it as a friend and they must do something to help. She targets Karl to help out; he caused the problem so he should help solve it.
Number 28
Ringo's looking at the employment section of the paper when Donna and Karl come in. Donna takes the paper away as Karl tells him they're worried about him. Ringo says he's not cut out for it and Karl assures him that what happened with Naomi isn't a reflection on Ringo as a paramedic but Ringo reminds him that's not what he was saying yesterday. Karl says he didn't mean it and Ringo musn't let it shake his confidence. But Ringo says he can - he's not like Karl. He can't not feel for people. He wants to get a job where he doesn't have to work with people or care so much. Donna thinks caring is a good quality in a paramedic but Ringo tells her to stop - he's through.
Number 26
Summer is sitting down with Steph and Toadie, telling them that most weddings take up to a year to plan. She hands them wedding magazines as she goes through the tons of things they need to sort out and Steph looks more wary. Summer volunteers herself as wedding planner. Steph thanks her but wants something very low key. Summer argues it has to be a massive celebration as Steph and Toadie have waited so long for it. Chris appears, saying they can keep magazines for as long as they want; they belonged to his cousin who's now getting divorced and off weddings for life.
Steph again reasserts she wants something small so Summer ropes Lyn in, who says that a wedding is much more than just the party afterwards.
LYN: It's a sacred commitment between two people who really love each other.
Summer thinks that's exactly why Steph and Toadie do need a massive celebration but Lyn reminds her she's going to be late for school. When Steph and Toadie are alone Steph wonders what to do about Lyn. Toadie says they can't force her to lie but Steph believes people will ask questions if Lyn doesn't support them. Toad hopes she'll get used to it but Steph knows that Lyn's beliefs lead her to think they're making a mockery of marriage. Toadie says they'll just have to convince her by showing her how traditional they can be.
Number 30
Toadie tells a reluctant Lyn that he wants her to be comfortable with the whole marriage thing so he asks her for her permission to ask for Steph's hand in marriage. Lyn is thoroughly confused as Toadie again proposes to Steph, promising to protect her, Charlie and the baby. Lyn reminds him he only promises to do so for six months.
TOADIE: And when we do go our separate ways know I will always love you. You will always be my best friend.
STEPH: Yes, Toadie, I would be honoured to marry you.
TOADIE: For as long as you need me.
STEPH: For as long as I need you.
LYN: This is wrong. Marriage is a sacred union and you're both turning it into a joke.
Toadie argues that they're very serious about it but Lyn won't support it.
Harold's Store
Steph rushes into the kitchen, telling her mum she needs her support. Lyn replies that she's supported Steph time and time again but she can't condone her marrying Toadie because they don't love each other. Steph reminds her why they're doing this, so people will believe. But Lyn says that with her and Toadie living and 'having a baby' together people already believe them - why marry? Steph just wants them to be a proper family for the kids, for the security. Lyn asks what the point is when it's only for six months. Steph replies it's just what she wants and asks for her support. When it isn't forthcoming Steph tells her to stay out of it and leave Toadie alone.
Lassiter's Complex
Lyn spots Toadie and can't help but rush over and tell him to take the proposal back. Toadie says that Steph wants security and he's happy to give that to her but for Lyn the fact it's only for six months makes no sense to her. Steph spots them and tells Lyn to butt out. She never listens to her - only Toadie respects what she wants! That is why she's marrying Toadie; because if anything happens to her then at least she can trust him to do what she wants. Lyn is shocked to find Steph doesn't trust her. Steph says she wants control over what happens to herself and her kids and Toadie can give her that but Lyn can't.
Number 26
Steph wants to talk it over but Lyn wouldn't dare open her mouth! Steph didn't mean to hurt her but Lyn replies it is hurtful to discover her own daughter doesn't trust her. Steph apologises, saying it isn't like that. Lyn knows she's only marrying Toadie so he can make decisions about her and disagrees with Steph's excuse that it's complicated - she won't apologising for loving and worrying about her daughter. Steph points out that Lyn doesn't listen at times though, like when she had her first cancer scare and she won't listen now. Steph says she has to make her own decisions.
LYN: And look where that's got you, Steph! You're trying to fix one lie with another. Where is it going to stop?
Steph asks her to promise one thing; that no matter how she feels, that she'll keep it to herself.
LYN: 'Cause we wouldn't want anyone finding out your dirty little secret would w - ?
Steph is shocked and Lyn seems the same at realising what she's said.
Bloke's Clubhouse
Zeke, Lucas, Declan and Lou are fixing up furniture when Donna comes in, annoyed they're ignoring the ongoing Ringo Crisis. The blokes think he's made his mind up but Donna won't give up when Ringo worked so hard to get into his course. Zeke offers to help and Donna wants their suggestions. Lou injures his thumb, distracting them and is annoyed to discover they have no first aid kit, not to mention a total lack of medical knowledge. Lucas says he would just call an ambulance but Donna says they don't need to; just call Ringo.
Ringo appears some time later. Lou's thumb is bandaged and Donna and the others have got a mannequin and some first aid stuff so that Ringo can show them how to perform first aid. Ringo is unimpressed, pointing out it's a mannequin and not a proper dummy. All the blokes join in at trying to convince Ringo to train them but Ringo turns away. Donna says they need him but Ringo just wants them all to butt out.
Outside Declan catches up, saying they were just trying to help. Donna doesn't need him taking his own stuff out on her. Ringo says nothing and walks off.
Number 26
Lyn is cleaning when she comes across a smiley photo of herself with Steph and breaks down in tears. Susan appears but Lyn has locked the screen door so she gets a moment to compose herself. But it's seconds before she breaks down again and Susan won't leave until she finds out what's wrong.
After the commercial break Lyn has calmed down. She sits with a cuppa as Susan asks if it's something to do with Steph and Toadie. Lyn wonders how she can tell. Susan thinks Toadie and Steph are having problems but Lyn admits she feels like the interfering mother- in- law. Susan's been there, but is surprised that Lyn and Toadie would disagree as they get on well. Lyn says things are different now. Susan asks if they had a fight and Lyn cries it's all they ever do lately. Lyn is so worried about Steph and her health and it's such a rush - they don't have to get married! She stops herself, realising what she's said but Susan thinks she's worried they're only getting married because of the baby and Lyn says that's what people will think. Susan says they seem very happy and in love and it's only natural they'll want to get married. Lyn nods, trying to smile through the tears and stop herself from saying anything more.
Lassiter's Park
Ringo catches up with a jogging Donna, saying he wants to apologise. He's sorry for taking it out on her. Donna wants him to reconsider going back but Ringo says it's too late. Donna reminds him he worked so hard but Ringo thinks he got it so wrong with Naomi, not seeing she needed proper help and making it worse. Donna says she doesn't think any of them realised what was going on and Ringo thinks he should've listened to Donna.
DONNA: I do occasionally get it right.
Ringo thinks she gets lots of things right, like when she said he wouldn't cut it when he first spoke of his paramedic aspirations. Donna disagrees, saying he'll be amazing but Ringo just walks away, looking dejected.
Number 28
Karl and Susan are making a shopping list but Susan is distracted. Declan, Zeke and Donna walk in; Declan thinks they should call Ringo's uni buddies to get them to pressure him into going back. Donna thinks they've done enough, to Libby and Karl's surprise. Susan heads out just as Ringo appears, finishing off a call on his mobile. He announces he has a job interview with a builder, but his mates don't appear very pleased. Ringo says he has to do something while he figures out what to do with his life. Karl sighs.
Number 30
Susan tells Toadie and Steph about Lyn being upset about being left out of the marriage stuff. She knows it's none of her business but she had to say something. Steph and Toadie say they don't want Lyn to feel left out at all and Susan says Lyn just wants them to be happy. Toadie assures Susan they are, putting his arm round Steph, and Susan replies that anyone can see that but maybe Lyn's worried they're only getting married because of the baby. Steph is surprised, asking if Lyn told her that. Susan says Lyn is worried about what other people are thinking. Toadie is defensive, saying they're in love and that's why they're getting married and Susan totally sees that. Lyn just needs to feel included. Toadie thanks Susan and says they'll talk to Lyn.
When Susan has gone Steph and Toadie shake their heads; Steph can't believe Lyn has talked about it.
STEPH: She'll blow the secret.
Number 26
Lyn is cleaning again when Steph hurries in and asks whether her mother realises what she's done: she informs her that she and Toadie have just had to reassure Susan they're not getting married just because of the baby. Lyn apologises, saying she should have warned her, but Steph storms that she shouldn't have said anything in the first place! Lyn starts to explain she was upset and Susan was there but Steph is angry she almost blew it because she was upset.
STEPH: What about me? Did you think about what this would do to me?
LYN: That's all I ever do think about, Stephie! I just want...I just want everything to be okay.
STEPH: Nothing will be okay if you can't keep your mouth shut!
As Lyn reassures her she won't say anything, Steph says she wants to believe her but can't.
STEPH: You can't help yourself.
LYN: You know what, I really think it might be best if I just get out of your hair. Leave.
STEPH: Maybe you should.
LYN: Right.
STEPH: Good.
Steph leaves and Lyn struggles not to break down again.
