Recap
- Lucas suggesting that Elle should go to New York just for a week
- Donna making Kate wear shoes that are too small.
- Saffron being bossy, haughty and thoroughly dislikeable with Kate
- Kate's feet bleeding over the shoes
- Donna leaving Kate high and dry so she can go to Saffron's party.
Number 24
Harry wants to know what happened to Kate's feet and she tells him about the shoes. Harry doesn't think Donna has been a very good friend recently and Kate worries about Sophie's lunch. As Kate leaves for work she realises she has a schedule clash. Her dance class and a deb committee meeting coincide. Harry suggests getting Donna to cover for her, but Kate thinks that is unlikely.
Harold's Store
CinderellaWorkingMumKate™ is wiping down tables when Donna comes in with a goody bag for her from the party the night before. Kate tells her to keep it. Donna apologises for leaving her the night before and for her poor feet but explains it was really important, her career depends on it. (It so doesn't for numerous reasons I could list, but won't.) Kate reminds her friend that she is dancing in front of Jason Coleman on Monday! Donna says she'll do anything to make it up. Kate tells her about not being able to make the deb meeting. Evidently Donna will do anything but that because she has to go and see Saffron.
DONNA: You don't get it! I can't mess this job up.
KATE: I get it. I totally get it.
As she storms off into the kitchen Donna tries to give her the goody bag again, but Kate accept.
Number 22
Ringo is studying and reminds Donna what a big favour Kate did her, while Donna rips stuff out of magazines irritably. She says she'd be trying to make it up to her any other time but not for a deb meeting.
RINGO: Deb meetings were the most important things in the universe a couple of weeks ago.
Donna tells her boyfriend that he doesn't understand, but he thinks he does actually. Before he can expand, Elle calls to say she's sitting next to Candice Bushnell Sex and the City author. Lucas comes in so Donna passes the phone over and Ringo hesitantly tells her not to get caught up too much in all the Saffron stuff. He knows what it's like to meet loads of exciting new people and to feel like everything else is boring and lame. Donna can't believe he's comparing what she does to fooling around with footy meatheads. Ringo ups and leaves.
Number 30
Libby is eating smarties/skittles out of a bowl and reading when Steph, Toadie, Callum and Rocky rock up to disturb the peace. It would seem that Libby's small bowl is in fact a offshoot of a larger bowl on the coffee table which just seems unnecessary. Callum dives into the sweets and Toadie reminds him that they're meant to be teaching Rocky about delaying gratification. Toad explains to the girls that they've got a new trainer who is stricter than Sonya and who has only given them a week for Rocky to make an improvement or else. Rocky seems intent on making smells rather than improvements and Toadie and Callum take a step back. Libby thinks they need someone who is not emotionally involved - but not her! Just then Lucas comes in. Ah, the perfect man for the job!
The boys go off for some training and Steph tells Libby that she's had some people looking around number 32. She's trying to hold them off because she was wondering if maybe she and Dan were interested.
Number 28
Libby is rooting around looking for documents and Karl wonders what Dan has to say on the matter of sorting out their finances. Libby says she can ring the bank without her husband's permission and advises her father not to say such thing in front of her mother. Karl says he means that buying a house and getting a mortgage is a decision that should be made as a couple.
LIBBY: So I should just wait around should I? Just wait until he's ready to do the normal things normal couples do. We've already put off the ultrasound, what else do we have to put off?
Karl assures her that he's not happy that Dan is still in New Zealand (we'll remind you of this next time you leave your wife for five weeks to see your other child, Karl) and he cares about her. He doesn't think there's a rush though.
LIBBY: Do you really want your grandchildren growing up watching wrestling every night?
KARL: Didn't harm Toadie.
LIBBY: I just want us to be in our own place before the baby comes.
KARL: So long as that's the only reason.
LIBBY: Well why else?
KARL: To prove a point.
LIBBY: And what would that be?
KARL: That if Dan continues to put Sam's needs ahead of yours, you'll run your life without him.
LIBBY: I'd like to think I'm not that childish.
KARL: So would I.
Oo, tension there.
Harold's
Harry lectures Kate about how she can't miss classes so close to the showcase, but she thinks that since she joined the deb committee before she started dance classes she ought to see the first through. Harry says he'll be her proxy at the meeting. Kate says that it's pointless without Donna there. Magically, Ringo appears behind them and says that he'll be Donna's proxy. Kate says she'd love to see them at deb committee meetings. Harry says he can eat biscuits as well as anybody else.
KATE: What?! Is that all you think we do?
HARRY & RINGO: YEAH!
Ringo thinks it'd be easy, but Kate still isn't convinced.
HARRY: (mincing towards Ringo) Can you believe that Lily Prayers(?) is going out with that girl in year 10?
RINGO: Oh. My. God. Shut up! (he limp wristedly hits Harry)
Kate laughs and Harry tells her they're naturals. Guess that means there are two proxy votes then!
Saffron's Design Studio of Evil[
Everyone is gathered around what appears to be a very plain and uninspiring outfit. Saffron suggests bringing it in around the waist and one over eager assistant (named "Clumsy Assistant") head buts the mannequin over trying to obey Saffron's command. Donna steps forward and rescues the situation, holding the material in place with gaffer tape. (The whole fashion industry is built on gaffer tape don't you know. And here was me thinking it was on egos and child labour.) Donna thinks the bodice would look better ruched. Saffron thinks she's right and says she has a good eye.
DONNA: I love all this.
SAFFRON: Pity. You would have made a good stylist.
DONNA: Would have?
SAFFRON: You can have all the talent in the world, but if it's not your obsession...
DONNA: It is.
SAFFRON: Then why did Lindsay have to drag you kicking and screaming to my party last night?
DONNA: I really did wanna go.
Donna explains that she was waiting with Kate who had hurt her feet. Saffron tells her that if she wants a nice life with family and friends she knows where the door is.
SAFFRON: But if you want to make a name for yourself in this industry then you stay here and you work and you don't stop. Not for anyone. Either way there's a price. Your choice which one.
Harold's
Kate can't believe Harry caved and voted for Amanda. Harry thought she was going to cry. Donna does an impersonation of Amanda's faux crying and jokes with Harry. Kate quietly remarks that at least he was there. Donna says she knows why she couldn't be there. Ringo tell her that he covered for her and tells the girls not to be so hard on Harry, he almost got sucked in too.
KATE: What is it with you guys and being so gullible?
DONNA: They can't help it, it's the way they're wired.
There's still tension there between the girls and Kate tells Harry they had to go.
DONNA: I thought you'd had dance class.
KATE: Yeah I did, but now I have to go and pick up Sophie from netball.
Urgh! I wish they'd kept a parent alive for the Ramsays. I'm sick to death of this poor little orphans fending for themselves stuff.
Donna tells Ringo she has to go too but Ringo thought they were going to hang out for a while. Donna reiterates that he doesn't know how important the job is to her. Ringo assures her he does, he just doesn't think she needs to spend every second of her day on it. Donna says that if she wants to make it in the business she needs to give it 100%. She notices the time and makes a run for it.
Number 30
Steph wishes Libby luck in getting approval for a loan from the bank (tbh, I think we'd all like a piece of the Bank of Erinsborough action). She asks about Dan's approval, will she stick to her guns?
LIBBY: He won't be happy.
STEPH: Well he shouldn't be there should he.
LIBBY: I'd better call him.
Steph gives her friend a good luck hug and leaves.
Libby stares at the phone and imagines the phone call. Daydream-Lib by tells Phone-Dan what's new in Ramsay Street then asks how Sam is. Daydream-Libby at the other end of the couch angrily asks Phone-Dan what he wants her to do and reminds him that he's her husband, not Sam's! Phone-Dan tries to pass the buck back to Libby who tells him it's not her problem. Daydream-Libby appears on the chair and cries to her Phone-Husband that she hates what is happening to them and knows that he's just trying to do what's best. She tells him she loves him and her words echo around her day-dream before we see the phone back on its stand again. Real-Libby picks the phone up and dials, but evidently gets voicemail as she puts the phone down again.
Saffron's Design Studio of Bad Tempered Fashionistas
Saffron has gone off the ruching idea, but Donna thinks the problem is the sleeves. Saffron ignores her and demands ideas from all the wannabes. Donna discreetly texts Ringo to say she misses him.
Number 24
Ringo doesn't seem to be missing Donna as much as he hangs with the Ramsays, having a giggle at Kate putting Harry through his paces dancing with a broom as payment for voting for Amanda. That's a nice moment, see, the Ramsays could be good if they didn't have the weight of the world on their shoulders!
Saffron's Design Studio
Saffron has noticed Donna's texting and gets all snidey. She angrily tells someone to get rid of the mannequin and dress of doom and shouts that she's paying them all for ideas so they'd better all bring her some tomorrow. Fresh and original. Easy peasey then.
Number 22
Lucas catches Donna raiding Libby's magazines for ideas. They chat about Elle briefly before Donna gets up to leave. Toadie stops her however as he needs her to see the latest in catwalk fighting fashion . Callum struts in sporting his new Squid wrestling gear fashioned from the finest purple and green silk.
LUCAS: Oo, is that your blue steal?
CALLUM: Yeah, but I like to call it grey iron.
Donna says it is AMAZING but she has to dash and promises to keep him in mind if she ever needs a model. Toadie thanks her and says that Callum is really excited about her living in the glam world of fashion. Donna tries to brush it off and really has to go. Plus, it's getting awkward.
Number 28
Karl is unsuccessfully trying to operate some sort of electrical device when Libby excitedly bursts in - she got the bank's approval! Karl congratulates her and asks if she's spoken to Dan. Steph arrives before she can answer and gets excited with her about the loan approval.
STEPH: Perfect! You won't even have to leave the street!
KARL: Hang on, am I missing something?
Libby explains she's buying number 32. Karl thought she was just making enquiries. Libby says that Steph wants to sell and it's a great opportunity. She knows Karl is going to say don't mix business with friendship but she and Steph assure him that they trust each other and the deal won't go sour. Karl asks if they've negotiated a price and Libby says she's been keeping an eye on the market and they can agree on a figure. Why not just get a valuation? Steph says she'll call Toadie to draw up the contracts but Karl really thinks they should wait for Dan, whether he loves Steph's house or not.
LIBBY: And what if Steph gets another buyer before he dains to grace us with his presence and act like a husband?
STEPH: I have actually had a few nibbles already so...
Libby thinks champagne is called for and rushes out, but Karl called Steph back and tells her that she must get Libby to speak to Dan before doing anything more.
Number 22
Ringo calls around to find Donna engrossed in coming up with designs. He tells her he missed her too but she barely acknowledges him. She tells him she's really busy and she'll be dead if she doesn't come up with anything for tomorrow. Ringo doesn't think Saffron is serious.
DONNA: She doesn't say anything she doesn't mean.
RINGO: Well she said you were good didn't she?
DONNA: Yeah, and so are hundreds of other people.
She gives Ringo the brush off and he stalks out, passing Kate on the way. He tells her it's probably not the best idea to interrupt and hopes she does better than he did. Kate apologises to Donna for being a bit mean lately, and Donna acknowledges that she maybe deserved it. Kate takes a look at the site Donna has been looking at and thinks the designs are cool. They are by one of the undiscovered designers she has been researching. Donna thanks Kate for coming over and Kate gets the hint to leave.
Donna catches sight of design with a half ruff neck - think Tudors on hard times - and grabs a new piece of paper and starts drawing. The "oh dear, you know you're doing the wrong thing" music begins.
Saffron's Design Studio
Saffron warns Donna that she's had the day from hell - yeah, and everyone who works for you has had a peachy time - Donna asks her to take a look at what she's done.
SAFFRON: You're not my favourite person right now.
DONNA: I think I will be once you've seen this.
Saffron agrees to look and thinks that the designs are sweet, but they can also be found in every chain store in Australia. Donna has something else though (and there's that music again) she shows Saffron the half ruff jumpsuit, only this one is cleverly in pink rather than blue. It is *exactly* what Saffron is after and she laments that Donna doesn't even know her own talent. She thinks it's brilliant. I'm not quite ready to hit the high street in search of it yet though.
Donna looks conflicted.
