Ramsay Street
Rebecca's driving to work when she sees Declan return from a walk with India. She stops the car to talk to him, but he refuses to speak with her because she hasn't changed her mind about supporting his anti-Steph crusade.
The rest of the teens are sitting outside musing over the Declan/Steph debacle. They can't believe Declan's going through with it; Zeke is especially peeved. Declan walks by them, snipes a bit with Zeke, and then heads home.
Charlie's Bar
Rebecca has a cry on Paul's shoulder about Declan completely shutting her out. She understands him suing the garage, but taking revenge on Steph is going too far. Paul, however, thinks that Declan needs this case to pull him through his grief and admits to Rebecca that he's paying all of Declan's legal fees. Rebecca's stunned and tells Paul to renege, but Paul insists that Declan has the right to see this through.
Number 28
Ringo's trying to do his homework, but Karl's making a racket in the hallway hanging up a framed copy of his first medical column. Donna stops by (with a bunch of flowers) to ask the boys if they want to visit Bridget's grave with her and Sunny. Ringo says that he's got too much study while Zeke just looks uncomfortable.
ZEKE: You don't have to be at someone's grave to talk to them.
The girls go and Zeke heads out the back, leaving Karl to chat to Ringo about his studies. Ringo admits that Audrey has a better chance at getting good grades than him at the moment. Karl gets a sudden idea to help Ringo out. He's going to sing. No, just kidding.
Ext - Hospital
Karl has arranged for Ringo to have a guided tour of an ambulance with Christian, a paramedic mate of Karl's. Christian tells Karl that he'll take over from here.
KARL: You should check out my new column if you get the chance. 'Ask Dr. Karl'.
CHRISTIAN: Yeah, will do. (After Karl leaves) He's writing a column now? He's very versatile, Karl, isn't he!
Ringo laughs and climbs aboard the van to look around.
Number 32
Toadie and Zeke look on as Steph tries to coax Charlie into eating breakfast, but he just runs off with his toy ambulance (IC WUT U DID THAR!). Steph's stressed about the case, even when Toadie assures her that he will fight Tim every step of the way. The way Steph sees it, her and Charlie are going to end up broke and homeless. Toadie urges Steph not to give up, but it looks as though she already has. Zeke is concerned.
Number 26
Declan and Tim are talking shop about the case. Tim informs his client that Steph will have to sell her house and move to pay him out, which pleases Declan. Zeke suddenly barges in to give Declan a piece of his mind.
TIM: This is a private conversation, champ.
ZEKE: It's got nothing to do with you, it's between me and him.
TIM: (smirking) I better be off then. Let you two talk man to... man.
Tim leaves and Zeke gets angry on Steph's behalf, but Declan could care less.
DECLAN: I don't need your advice. And I'm getting really, really sick of everyone thinking that they know better.
ZEKE: It was an honest mistake. Suing Steph isn't going to make you feel better.
DECLAN: Blah, blah, blah, blah. Where did you get all this from, your shrink?
ZEKE: Is that the best you can do?
DECLAN: Get out.
ZEKE: It sucked losing Didge. It sucks that we've lost you too.
Harold's Store
Zeke sits with Donna and Sunny, who are in a melancholy mood after visiting Didge's grave. Zeke admits he had a barney with Dec about Steph. Sunny's shocked and Donna thinks that now is the time to show Declan that they love him - not fight with him. She states that a DVD/junk food day is in order to remind him of the good old days, "When he remembers who his friends are everything will be OK."
Ext - Hospital
Christian asks Ringo what made him decide to become a paramedic. Ringo says he just wants to help people - and that he also lost a close friend in a car accident. Christian lets Ringo know that Karl thinks he has what it takes. Answering a call on the two-way, Christian and his partner quickly head off to an accident.
Roadside
Ringo has followed the ambulance to the scene of a road accident. As he watches Christian and the crew work on the victim, he has a flashover (voiceover flashback) of all the important moments surrounding Didge's accident. Ringo then has a CareerCalling™ moment when an old man in the crowd of onlookers has a dizzy spell and Ringo helps him out like a pro.
Charlie's Bar
Rebecca skilfully ignores a phone call from Paul whilst ignoring a coffee request from Tim. Toadie and Steph front up to the skeevy lawyer to talk about the case. Tim thinks it's ironic that a little while ago he was helping Steph sue Toadie, and now Toadie's back in her corner again.
TOADIE: That's not irony, numbskull, that's called friendship.
TIM: You might call it friendship. I call it being a pathetic little puppy who won't learn his lesson.
STEPH: You're a pig, you know that?
But Tim just laughs - he loves that Steph gets so easily riled up because it won't take much for her to erupt in court and spill her secrets. He leaves and Toadie tells Steph to chill; Tim has nothing on her. But Steph has an odd look on her face...
Cemetery
Declan's kneeling down in front of Bridget's grave, crying. Her headstone reads:
Bridget Louise Parker
31 August 1991 - 21 July 2009
Loving daughter, sister, wife & mother
Never short of an opinion and nearly always right
DECLAN: I try to keep going but half the time I don't know what I'm doing. I just wish you were here to help me. You always had the answers.
He hears footsteps behind him and isn't impressed to see Zeke. Declan tells Zeke to visit when he's not there; he's already chosen which side he's on. Staying calm, Zeke says they all miss Didge and are trying to keep her memory alive the best way they can.
DECLAN: Leave us alone.
ZEKE: This campaign against Steph. Didge would be ashamed. If you're going to do it, go for it. Just don't do it in Didge's memory.
Number 26
Rebecca arrives home with India, surprised to find Paul greeting her with a bunch of apology flowers. But Rebecca doesn't think that flowers are going to make up for going behind her back.
PAUL: He's hurting. He's the most important thing in your life, which means he's important to me as well.
REBECCA: I love the fact that you want to help him but this isn't the way.
PAUL: Alright I respect that. I'm sorry.
REBECCA: He does need a father figure you know.
Their conversation is interrupted by Donna, Sunny and Zeke, who have arrived on a rescue mission for Dec armed with DVDs and junk food. Declan arrives home not long after and the adults vamoose. He warily asks what they're doing, throwing a look to Zeke, but Donna says it was about time they hung out again. She even rented all the Wallace & Gromit films to start training India early. This raises a smile in Dec, and eventually he and Zeke swap apologies.
DECLAN: Where's Ringo?
DONNA: Oh yeah, you don't know yet. He has totally traded career paths. Hot tradie is off, super hot paramedic is on. Gotta love a man in uniform. Clean, crisp, bossy, what's not to love?
Number 28
Donna and Sunny race back to collect Ringo, who has good news to share (that Karl was already in the know about). Christian has recommended that Ringo join the St John's Ambulance as a volunteer cadet after his star turn helping the fainty old dude. And, he even got a St John's t-shirt thrown into the mix. The gang thinks the news is legen - wait for it - dary. Donna gives Ringo a congratulatory/you're hot pash and Sunny giggles and covers Karl's eyes.
Number 26
The teens have re-grouped and Declan sincerely tells Ringo that he should be proud of everything he's doing. It all looks to be hunky dory until Tim stops by to deliver some paperwork for Declan to sign - then the mood turns sour. Ringo asks if Declan's really going to go through with the case against Steph. Paul and Rebecca appear from the kitchen to listen.
DECLAN: I've tried to play happy families. I've tried and I can't do it.
ZEKE: We're your friends, we're just trying to help.
DECLAN: If you were my friends you'd see that Steph killed Bridget. If you can't do that how can we be friends?
RINGO: Mate.
DECLAN: No. I want you to decide now. Me or Steph?
Ringo stays silent but Zeke gets up and leaves, with Sunny running after him. Declan orders the other two to get out. Donna tries to talk him around but he won't listen. The duo exit and Declan is left with raised eyebrows from Rebecca and Paul.
Number 32
Toadie is pestering Steph to tell him what's on her mind, so Steph confesses that she may have been distracted when she was working on the Parkers' car.
TOADIE: (concerned) Distracted how?
STEPH: I had a fight with Lucas and he kind of piled all this work on me. It was a bit of a payback.
TOADIE: What did you fight about?
(Steph looks incredibly uncomfortable)
TOADIE: Steph I can't defend you if I don't know.
STEPH: Uh... We were flirting with each other. I'm so sorry, Toadie, I know you don't want to hear this.
(Toadie is taken aback but tries to play it cool)
TOADIE: No, I need to know everything... Glad I found out before the court case.
STEPH: I'm so sorry, and I'm sorry that you're only hearing about it now.
TOADIE: Yeah, so am I. Because if Tim hears about it he's going to have a field day.
STEPH: Is it really that bad?
TOADIE: It points to your state of mind, which points to the quality of your work, which could point to your culpability in Bridget's death.
Steph looks distraught and buries her face in her hands.
Number 30
Toadie walks in and tries to sit down and mull things over, but his brain is full speed ahead. He takes a whole heap of law books off the shelves and flicks through them for inspiration, but nothing jumps out at him so he throws the books down in frustration.
Number 32
Steph is wallowing at the bench but composes herself when Toadie returns.
TOADIE: You want to stay in Ramsay Street, right?
STEPH: Yes.
TOADIE: I've been trying to find a way to help you and Charlie stay.
STEPH: And?
TOADIE: When you're on the stand you can't say a thing about Lucas.
STEPH: But that's not...
TOADIE: I know what it is, and I wouldn't be suggesting it unless it was absolutely necessary. Unless you want to lose everything, this is the only way.
Steph looks troubled.
