Number 32
Zeke quickly takes his feet off the coffee table when Steph walks in, but Steph doesn't care - she sits on the couch and props her feet up herself.
STEPH: Settling in alright?
ZEKE: Yeah. It's great. No queues for the bathroom.
STEPH: Oh I know. When Ty was living here Lib and I never got a look in. It took him hours to do his hair!
Zeke offers to make her a drink, but Steph tells him to relax; she's his housemate, not his mum. Ringo and Sunny drop by for a study session, but Zeke becomes concerned when he learns that #28 has erupted into chaos.
Erinsborough Hospital
Libby, Dan, Karl and Susan are waiting to speak with someone about the surrogacy, and Libby tells Jodie that they're not leaving until they do. When Peggy emerges from a room, the gang bombard her with questions, but she ruefully informs them that she's not allowed to talk about the issue. Huffing and puffing, Libby finds her mobile and dials Toadie - "They're not getting away with this".
Charlie's Bar
Toadie has joined Libby, Dan, Karl and Susan for a debriefing. Libby states that if there's no medical reason for the hospital to stop the surrogacy, then what they're doing is illegal. She wants to sue for discrimination, but the others think that's a bad idea. Toadie says that those kind of cases can go on for years (plus they're pricey), and Dan reminds her that it'd be too hard on Ben.
LIBBY: So what, we just slink away and accept it all because some faceless medical board decides to play God? What kind of message does that send to Ben? Someone has to stand up to them, might as well be me.
Number 32
Zeke leaves another message on Susan's mobile to call him. He hangs up, looking distracted. As does Ringo when Donna drapes herself across him to reach for her pencil case.
DONNA: It's so unfair about the surrogacy getting cancelled. If anyone deserves to be a mum it's Libby.
RINGO: She's already a mum to Ben.
DONNA: ... Oh yeah.
Donna thinks Zeke needs a toastie to cheer him up, which is just as well because Steph's already cooking some. Donna and Sunny head to the kitchen to make sure the toasties have extra cheese. Ringo smirks at Zeke.
RINGO: So... Things are pretty awkward between you and Sunny?
ZEKE: Yep.
RINGO: Bet you feel like an idiot.
ZEKE: Yep.
Zeke gets his own back, though, by asking how things are between Ringo and Donna. Steph brings in the plate of toasties before heading off to work. Donna smiles: Steph already put extra cheese on; she may well be the world's most perfect woman. Donna slowly licks some cheese off her finger. Ringo spontaneously combusts.
Ramsay Street
The surrogacy gang arrive home, but Libby gets her sad face on when she sees Steve unloading baby stuff from the car. When Libby spies Elle (and Lucas) at #22 something snaps and she storms over to shout at Elle for publishing the story that broke the camel's back. Elle tries to explain that it was Paul and not her, and that the article was sympathetic towards them, but Libby won't listen. She calls the Robinsons disgusting before stomping back home. Elle tells Susan that she's sorry, but Susan replies that they all had a lot invested in the surrogacy.
Number 28
Zeke stops by to pack up his video game console and to mope about not being kept in the loop with family news. Karl and Susan explain that they weren't trying to purposefully withhold information from him, they've just had a hectic morning. Zeke reiterates that he left them three messages. Exasperated, Karl says that it's not all about Zeke. Hurt, Zeke walks out. Karl knows he's put his foot in it and goes to follow him, but Susan says she'll check on Zeke later when he's cooled down.
Garage
Libby has gone to Steph for some sympathy and Steph says she'll try and get some of her council mates on to it. Lucas suggests they start up a protest, but the girls aren't keen on that idea. When Steph hears that Libby was talked out of suing for discrimination she's taken aback and reminds Lib that they always fight for their rights (so say the gospel of the Beastie Boys).
Karl arrives to chat with Lib and his heart breaks when he sees how distressed she is and how much she wants a baby. Elle walks by unnoticed to see Lucas and gives them a sympathetic look. Karl tells Libby to go home and get some rest; he'll figure out what to do next.
KARL: I swear to you this is not over. I will sort it out.
Charlie's Bar
Sitting with Toadie, Karl tries to get through to Peggy on the phone but is directed to her message bank. Toadie muses that Peggy might have been banned from speaking to him.
Over at the bar Steve is excitedly showing Dan and Lucas pictures of Didge and Tadpole on the camera. Dan's trying to look happy, but isn't really in the mood to talk babies.
STEVE: (re: Tadpole) Don't you reckon she looks a little bit like me there? Just in the eyes.
DAN: ... Bridget's adopted.
Lucas intervenes by letting Steve know that the hospital cancelled the surrogacy, but Steve starts blabbing away about how it might be a good thing, making Dan even more tetchy.
STEVE: Maybe you and Lib can find some other way. I mean the surrogacy would've been tough on you both, and the baby. Susan too, it'd be confusing with her. Would the baby call her grandma or mum? And with Ben, would the baby be Ben's brother or sister? No! It would be aunt or uncle, right!
(Dan and Lucas stare at him, dumbfounded)
LUCAS: Maybe just shut up now, Steve.
He quickly apologises and scurries away just as Elle approaches the Fitzgerald boys.
ELLE: I want to put things straight.
DAN: You've got a time machine parked out the back have you?
Elle explains that she wants to run a story on the hospital's decision with the paper taking the blame for everything. She adds that she'll use the discrimination angle, but Dan's answer is a resounding no. He doesn't want his family to have anymore exposure.
Number 32
Donna's on the phone to Didge letting her know how cool Steph is. When Donna absently puts her hand on Ringo's leg, Ringo quickly jumps up to put some music on. U Can't Touch This, perhaps?
Susan stops by to see Zeke just as Ringo sets the music blaring. Taking in the messy lounge room, Susan tells Zeke that Karl didn't mean to growl at him earlier, he's just stressed. She lets Zeke know that they're having a family meeting tonight to talk about everything, but Zeke plays it cool and says he's got too much study on.
Zeke joins Ringo to play a video game when Susan leaves, ignoring Sunny when she tells him he was being rude. Donna quietly tells Sunny that Zeke's feeling rejected so he's acting out. Sunny wonders if it's because of her, but Donna doesn't see why it would be (not knowing about the 'I love you' debacle).
Later, Sunny tells Donna that all of Zeke's problems are her fault, but Donna thinks it's sweet that Zeke moved out to save her from leaving. The topic changes to the other teen romance when Sunny asks Donna why her and Ringo are taking things slowly.
DONNA: Well we tried not to go slow and the house caught on fire. What can you do?
She reaches for some chips just as Ringo does and their hands touch. SEXUAL! TENSION! Donna jumps back, mumbling to Sunny that the whole 'going slowly' thing is killing her. Sunny teases that she's so in lurrrve, but then gets serious.
SUNNY: So how long did it take you to fall in love?
DONNA: Ages. Like, weeks! What's with all the questions?
SUNNY: Just interested.
Number 28
Karl asks how Zeke is, but Susan rates him as "so-so". Karl wonders whether it's safe for him to go to #32 for a chat, but Susan informs him about the family meeting. Karl mutters that it feels like the family is falling apart, but Susan reassures him that they'll get through it. When she heads out to get some milk from #30, Karl rings the hospital to try and locate Peggy. He finally gets on to her, but she refuses to tell him anything and hangs up. Karl's frustrated, but his phone rings seconds later. It's Peggy calling in secret from her office on her mobile - she wants to meet Karl at Charlie's at 7pm to talk.
Number 32
Ringo and Donna are alone in the lounge room (or should that be pig sty?). The SEXUAL! TENSION! is still there. Ringo tries to sensitively broach the subject of sexy time, but Donna leaps on him for a pash before he can finish. Of course Steph then walks in on them and they jump apart. Zeke and Sunny rejoin them just as Steph remarks on the untidy state of her house. She warns the teens that they've got 10 minutes to clean up and reminds Zeke that although it's his house as well, that doesn't mean he gets to disrespect it. Zeke is ashamed. Steph then says that Susan's expecting him at Harold's for their family meeting (they're discussing private business in public about their privacy being disturbed? Sensible!).
Harold's Store
Elle is on the phone to Donna. Lucas is distracting his girlfriend with hugs.
ELLE: Well that's great, Donna, but I want advance notice if Ringo's going to be staying over. And he is to be fully clothed at all times if he is in communal areas... (scoffing) Lucas always wears boxer shorts!
LUCAS: Almost always.
Elle smirks and whacks Lucas across the chest. She hangs up and asks him to take the drinks over to the Kennedy/Fitzgerald/Kinski/Brown/Lee clan; she knows she's not welcome there. Lucas delivers the coffees and says they're on the house - Elle shoots him a death glare.
Susan and Karl start up the meeting and Karl apologises to Zeke for getting annoyed before. Zeke quickly says he's sorry as well. Susan invites the kids to ask questions and Sunny wonders if they're going to sue. Libby admits it might be more trouble than it's worth. Not so subtly checking his watch, Karl makes his excuses to leave. Susan is annoyed - they're supposed to be presenting a united front - but Karl says he has to be somewhere important. "I made Libby a promise. I'm going to fix this."
Charlie's Bar
Another private meeting in public! Why not! Peggy sits with Karl but says she can't stay long. She tells him that the public backlash caused the hospital to think twice about the surrogacy, and it played into Brian's (the hospital CEO) hands. Peggy adds that all of the staff involved has a ban put on them, and if they speak to anyone about what went down they'll be suspended.
KARL: What they're doing is illegal and immoral.
PEGGY: I was dead against it but I was out-voted.
KARL: They have to be brought into account. Would you be willing to go on the record?
PEGGY: I can't. Look I'm telling you because I think you have a right to know the truth. But if this gets out I will deny this conversation ever happened.
Number 32
Steph brings in some chips to eat and Zeke hastily takes his feet off the table, scared of putting another foot (heh) wrong. But Steph reaches over and lifts his feet up onto the table herself. Zeke grins and starts to relax.
Number 30
Libby lies down on the couch while Dan strokes her hair. Sadness abounds.
Harold's Store
Elle finishes reading the document Karl has presented her.
ELLE: Does Libby know about this?
KARL: I'll take full responsibility.
ELLE: You do realise you could lose your job?
KARL: I have to force the board's hand somehow.
The document is revealed: "My family's fight: the truth - By Karl Kennedy".
ELLE: Are you absolutely sure?
KARL: Print it.
