Number 30 / Number 22
Dan puts the DVD of the ultrasound on.
Sam has her bags packed and is ready to go.
Dan watches the baby kick and squirm around.
Sam picks up her knitting from the coffee table and unravels it all in tears.
Lucas comes to check up on Dan. Dan decides the baby could still be his and gets up and leaves the house.
Ramsay Street
Outside the house Libby is weeding and Ben is playing with his football. Lib asks Dan where he's going and he tells her he's going to see Sam. Next door Steph and Charlie are taking things out of the car. Steph calls across to see how Libby is. They arrange to meet for a coffee later.
Number 22
Dan wants to know about the other bloke. When did it happen? Sam tells him it was a week or so after she left Ramsay Street.
DAN: You didn't waste any time then.
SAM: I was lonely.
DAN: You were manic.
SAM: No I wasn't. Not then. I just needed some comfort.
Dan takes a deep breath and asks if she's told the other guy that she's pregnant. She tells him she didn't think for a second that it was his. Dan doesn't think her instincts count for much any more. Sam doesn't expect him to believe her and asks him to let her prove it.
Number 28
Ty, Rachel, Susan and Karl return from the hospital. Karl starts to play back answerphone messages. One is for Susan from the police offering her counselling after the previous day's events. Karl looks far from impressed as Susan tells him to switch it off.
RACHEL: I thought we were meant to be a family.
KARL: I couldn't have said better myself.
SUSAN: I just wanted to protect you.
RACHEL: So you thought it was better to keep us in the dark?
KARL: You are such a hypocrite. When I believe Zeke has been sighted and go to chase that up, I'm insane. If you do it it's perfectly normal.
SUSAN: I had to find out. Once I knew it wasn't him there didn't seem to be any reason to tell you. You had so much more to think about. Your first day back at work and then Harold.
KARL: Excuses.
RACHEL: If I had thought Zeke was alive I'd have told you straight away. I thought that we were meant to be a family.
Rachel and Karl both walk away.
Charlie's
Ty reckons that if he'd been in Susan's place he'd have done the same thing, she was trying to protect them. Rachel tells him she loves him.
Sass comes in and wants to know what Paul's excuse is for standing her up. He tells her he left her messages but she never called. She says that by then the damage was done and that the damages to his Lassiters tab were the least he deserved. Paul gets a phone call and has to leave. Sass goes to sit with Lucas.
LUCAS: Elle's told me about you. You're trying to crack onto Paul for a slice of the cash.
SASS: Well you can't help who you fall for.
LUCAS: Tell me about it. The Robinsons are hard work though, I'd run a mile if I were you.
SASS: Well why aren't you running? Hmmm, looks like we're in the same boat. Do you fancy a spot of fishing?
Harold's Store
Libby and Steph are having a coffee together, friends reunited. Steph can't believe the baby is Dan's, she hopes that's the case anyway then Sam would be out of their lives for good. Libby supposes so, she just feels for Dan.
LIBBY: This was his one big chance to be a father.
STEPH: He is a father. He's got Ben.
LIBBY: I wish I could give him a baby.
Steph doesn't think that matters, he loves Libby and he loves Ben. It doesn't stop Libby feeling useless for not being able to give him what he wants.
STEPH: You are not useless. You are strong and you are patient and...I've missed you so much!
LIBBY: I've missed you too.
They hug.
Number 22
Sam shows Dan a website about getting parental DNA from unborn babies. Dan is concerned that it says it could harm the baby. Sam doesn't see how else she can prove it. Dan says they'll do a paternity test after she's born but until then he thinks Sam should go back home. Sam thinks they should go and speak to Karl to find out more. She won't have this hanging over them.
Number 28
Karl says that there are definitely risks though it's a routine procedure as most women have the test to determine genetic abnormalities. Most couples wait until the baby is born before having tests to determine paternity. Sam isn't prepared to wait. Karl suggests they include Libby in the discussions. They agree and leave.
Susan comes in from the garden and asks what Sam wanted.
KARL: I can't say, that would breach patient confidentiality and that is of course a sacred trust, rather like the trust between a husband and wife.
Susan admits she should have told him about looking for Zeke but she was trying to protect him.
KARL: "But", that's a funny word. You put it into a sentence and everything that proceeds it becomes a lie. "I'm not a racisit, but..." "I'm sorry, but..."
SUSAN: Alright then this is just a plain, flat out, I'm sorry. No buts.
KARL: You know, it's bad enough having to wonder for all time what happened to Zeke without having to wonder about you as well.
Harold's Hospital Room
Lou is reading out of a globetrotter's guide to Harold and Steve who seems to have nodded off. Karl comes in to check on the patient and says his SATs are back down. Steve asks if Karl is alright, he seems preoccupied. Harold says that if it's about yesterday, he mustn't feel bad on his account. Karl thanks him and says he'll be back later.
Charlie's
Lucas and Sass are still chatting and Rebecca is dying to know what they're talking about. She sends Steph to try and eavesdrop. She is rather unsuccessful as Sass is onto her straight away. Lucas tells Sass that rich guys like Paul are used to getting what they want and when they don't, they want it more. Thrill of the chase etc. Just then Lucas' phone rings. It's Elle. Lucas sets an example by rejecting the call and telling her to keep her distance and keep him interested.
Harold's Hospital Room
Charlie has just finished singing Incy Wincy Spider to Harold when Susan arrives. Steph, Charlie, Lou and Steve all decide to go and get smoothies from the canteen leaving Susan and Harold alone. Susan tells him she won't stay too long, she just needs to find Karl and give him his lunch. Harold asks how Karl is as he seemed a little out of sorts earlier.
SUSAN: He's alright.
HAROLD: So are you if it comes to that...
SUSAN: It's nothing. I don't want you to worry about it, you've got enough to think about.
HAROLD: I'd rather worry about other people at the moment, so if you want to talk about it.
SUSAN: I kept something from Karl about Zeke and I honestly thought I was doing the right thing.
HAROLD: And he didn't see it that way?
SUSAN: No. And I've said I'm sorry, but he's still angry at me. And I don't want to fight with him Harold. Everything is hard enough as it is.
Karl comes in to check on Harold again and Susan gives him his lunch. Harold comments that a caring wife is what every man needs. Karl is about to leave again when Harold calls him back.
HAROLD: Karl, my faith has always taught me to believe in forgiveness. Now I forgave you because I know you believed in what you were doing.
Karl looks a bit sheepish and thanks Susan for his lunch. Boyishly he asks if he got a treat. I bloody well hope not. Judging by Susan's smile though, I think he probably did. Susan thanks Harold.
Elsewhere in the hospital Dan tells Sam that they shouldn't be going through with the procedure. Sam says he can go if he wants, she can do it alone. Steph sees the pair and asks Dan if she's still stringing him along.
DAN: Keep out of it Steph.
STEPH: When are you going to stop lying and get the hell out of their lives.
SAM: I'm here to prove to Dan, to all of you, that this baby is his.
STEPH: You've already lost a baby! I can't believe you'd go through with this. The sooner you ditch her the better.
DAN: OK, you should just mind your own business.
STEPH: No, Dan. Libby's my friend and what this is doing to her makes it my business. Do you know how worthless she feels because all you seem to care about is having a baby.
DAN: It's not like that. I need to know if I'm the father and I'm getting sick of people judging me for it.
STEPH: Well that's very funny, because the only person not judging you for it is Libby. (To Sam) DNA test, eh? Jeez, I knew you were a piece of work, but I didn't think you were capable of this.
Dan tells Steph to get out. Steph tells him that she's so desperate to hang onto him she'd put her baby at risk. He should think about what he's doing.
The Allotments
Rachel helps Ben and Charlie decide what to plant next while the mums have a good catch up. Libby is having a good old chuckle.
LIBBY: Oh it is so good to have you back in my corner!
STEPH: It's good to be back.
Susan arrives and asks the planters how it's going. Rachel remarks that keeping busy helps. Libby tells Susan that Sam is having a pre-natal maternity test and wonders what she tells Ben if the baby isn't Dan's. Susan tells her one step at a time.
LIBBY: If the baby's not Dan's, I've decided to try for one myself.
SUSAN: Libby!
LIBBY: I don't care about the risks.
SUSAN: I do!
STEPH: If it's not Dan's baby you don't have to worry about competing with Sam.
LIBBY: It's not about her.
Steph doesn't seem convinced. Libby says that she wants Dan to be a father and Ben to be a brother and more than anything, she wants to be a Mum again. Susan and Steph are lost for words.
Charlie's
Lucas, Sass and Ty are all enjoying a jolly joke when Paul comes in. He tells Sass he's been calling her. She says she's been busy. Paul apologises for yesterday, he had a legitimate excuse, but it doesn't really matter now. He suggests they try again. He invites her around to his place and her eyes widen and she smiles.
SASS: Let's just leave it, yeah? Have a good one Pauly.
She squeezes his cheek and returns to sit with Lucas.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sam is lying waiting for the test, holding onto her bump. She has a flashback to her and Dan laying flowers on a swing and of kissing Dan in the hospital. Dan sits waiting outside the room. The doctor goes in and get ready to perform the procedure. Sam seems uncomfortable and asks them to stop. Dan enters the room and Sam begins to cry. She admits that the baby isn't his and that the timing is all wrong.
DAN: But you said you were sure of...
SAM: I lied. The dates don't match. It can't be yours. I only found out the other day.
DAN: So all this. We didn't have to do it?
SAM: I didn't know what else to do. I didn't want to lose you, Dan. You'd be such a great dad. You could look after us. I just thought that if I told the truth now we could start again.
Dan storms out leaving Sam broken and sobbing, calling out to him.
Ramsay Street
Paul helps Sam load her cases into a taxi and gives her a hug telling her to take care and good luck. Sam looks across the street as she gets into the taxi and sees Libby and Dan unloading shopping, staring back at her. The taxi pulls away.
DAN: I'm sorry. I'm sorry if it seemed like I wanted a baby more than I wanted you. Because that's not true. I love you. (They kiss) You're all I need, Lib. You and Ben.
