- Karl advising Susan against the MS drug trial
- Sam attacking Libby for fancying Dan
- Steve being sentenced to five years prison
- Dan telling Toadie that Sam lost the baby
- Sam asking Karl to keep the non-pregnancy from Dan
Number 30
Sam wakes up to find Dan staring at her. He quietly murmurs that they agreed to have no more secrets between them. Wise enough to know he's been tipped off, Sam goes into damage control and says that Libby is a liar, but Dan just keeps asking her for the truth. After tearfully making Dan promise that he won't leave her, Sam reveals that there never was a baby. Dan is left shattered.
Number 28
Zeke's reading up on Susan's MS pamphlet during dinner and voices his concern about the idea. Libby reassures him that there are a lot of doctors out there who support the research, but Karl reveals that he's not one of them. Susan tells Zeke that it's only an information session and that they should keep an open mind. They all start to clear the table and Rachel checks up on her brother.
RACHEL: So is this about dad? (Zeke doesn't answer) Zeke?
ZEKE: It's about Susan.
Number 30
Sam explains to Dan why she lied about the baby and when she saw how happy the news made him she couldn't break that happiness. Dan asks why Sam can't trust him, but Sam assures him she does. It was her illness that made her unable to think straight.
SAM: If it wasn't for Libby and the way she looks at you.
DAN: (yelling) This is not Libby's fault!
(Dan storms off)
SAM: (panicked) Dan you promised you wouldn't leave!
The next morning, Sam finds Dan folding up some blankets after spending the night on the couch. Toadie bustles around, calling for Callum to get out of bed and asks the pair if they've seen his briefcase but can see he's interrupting. Sam tries to get Dan to stay and talk, but Dan can't face her and heads off to work.
Number 26/Warrinor Prison
Miranda waits impatiently for news about Steve.
MIRANDA: If Toadie doesn't call soon I'm going to explode.
LOU: Well try not to. I'd hate for Steve to come home and find us scraping you off the walls.
Nicola walks out in her new hospital uniform (which includes a new yellow t-shirt instead of an aqua one), just as Toadie strolls in to personally deliver the news that Steve's manslaughter charge has been quashed. Didge and Miranda hug him tightly as he adds that he's got Steve on the phone right now.
We switch to the very awesome interior of the jail as Steve and Miranda have a quick chat, but two burly looking inmates loiter near Steve (one is so big I'm wondering if he's about to pop out a kid like that dude on Oprah - the other looks like a walking tattoo parlour) and he asks her to put Toadie back on. Steve anxiously tells Toad not to let his family pick him up and to hurry up with the paperwork. The family are disappointed when Toadie relays the news, but Miranda says they need to respect Steve's request. Didge looks a bit upset by it all.
Erinsborough High
Didge tells Rachel, Zeke and Ringo the good news about her dad, but she's worried that he won't be happy to see her because she crashed the sentencing against his wishes. Rachel admits that relations can get quite strained after a huge family ordeal - just look at what happened with the whole Angus drama - but that it always works out in the end.
RINGO: Exactly. What doesn't kill you will only make you stronger.
ZEKE: Who dares wins!
(They give him odd looks)
ZEKE: Sorry, I thought we were having a cliché contest.
RINGO: Man you're strange.
ZEKE: Hey, it's my charm!
Didge asks how Susan is coping and Rachel tells her about the MS drug trial, which only makes Zeke into a ball of angst once more. He growls that it's a stupid idea and that there's no miracle cure.
ZEKE: The reality is they get sicker and they die. And I'm not letting that happen to Susan.
Warrinor Prison
Lou has taken pity on Steve and has come to collect him. Steve is quite eager to get the hell out of there, and when Lou pats him on the shoulder and he cringes in pain, it's obvious that he's gotten himself into some trouble. Lou asks what happened, but Steve won't say and tells him not to let Miranda know about it.
Hospital
Nicola runs into Karl and asks if he could pull some strings with the Director of Nursing so she could go home for a few hours to see Steve. But Karl can't help - what the DoN says is law around them there parts.
Number 28
Susan has cheekily called Karl home so he can meet Lina - a woman from her MS support group (who isn't an actor but has MS in real life) - in the hopes of changing his mind about the drug trial. Susan says that Lina has an Order of Australia medal for her fundraising efforts, and Lina reveals that she raised $147,000 last year. But she adds that their main goal is to see what new developments the money can be used for. Susan states that Lina is very inspiring and Lina reveals that her goal is to not let the MS tell her what to do.
Law Office
Sam finds Toadie and it's established that he spoke to Dan this morning and knows that Sam lied about the baby - but Toadie isn't judging or taking sides. Sam apologetically asks for more time off, and Toadie complies; he hopes that her and Dan can work things out. Sam hopes so too because she doesn't think she could cope without him.
TOADIE: Sam...
SAM: No, I really don't think I could.
TOADIE: You'll be fine.
SAM: What if I've pushed him away, Toadie? What if it really is over?
TOADIE: Sam, you're beautiful, you're intelligent, you're clever. You're going to be fine.
SAM: You're just saying that to make me feel better.
TOADIE: You're right, you're as ugly as a hat full of bums.
SAM: I'm just scared that's all.
TOADIE: You'd be mad not to be.
Ramsay Street
Libby checks to see if Dan's OK and Dan lets her know that he found out the truth about the baby. He asks who else knew, and Libby replies that it doesn't matter, but Dan says that if he was the last person to find out then it *does* matter. Libby says the old, 'If there's anything I can do' line and Dan replies a little too quickly that she's done enough. Realising how harsh he sounded, he apologises and says he doesn't blame her, but Libby still looks quite stung.
Number 26
Miranda stumbles in with her grocery bags and curses when she accidentally drops one. But her frown is turned upside down when Steve walks in from the backyard to surprise her. They hug and kiss and Steve looks relieved to be home.
Drug Trial Seminar
Susan hesitantly walks in by herself and takes a seat. Mike Shaw, the host of the event, introduces himself and starts proceedings. Susan listens with a mixture of curiosity and nervousness.
Number 26
Miranda gets off the phone from Nicola who said to give Steve a big kiss from her. I'll bet she did. Still in her gleeful state, Miranda squeezes Steve in a bear hug and says how wonderful it is to have him back. Lou notices Steve wincing from Miranda's death grip. When Miranda leaves the room, Lou says Steve's going to have trouble keeping his injuries from her. Steve says he'll manage and thanks Lou for not spilling the beans.
Drug Trial Seminar
Mike concludes his talk and asks if there's any questions. Susan's the only one to put her hand up and is about to speak, when Mike calls on an unseen person behind her - Karl. Susan's delighted that he decided to join her, and moves over so he can sit with her.
Erinsborough High
Libby catches Zeke reading 'A new beginning for MS sufferers' instead of his English text and tells him off. The class is soon interrupted by a fierce looking Sam, who has charged in uninvited to talk with Libby. Rattled, Lib points out that she's in the middle of class, but when Sam threatens to air their dirty laundry in front of the kids, Libby quickly escorts her into the hall. Sam angrily asks why Libby stuck her nose in and let the cat out of the bag, but Libby replies that she only told Dan to go home and chat to his wife.
SAM: You must be thrilled. No baby means you're still in with a chance.
LIBBY: That's a horrible thing to say.
SAM: Tell me you're not attracted to Dan. Tell me you don't fantasise about him.
LIBBY: I don't have to listen to this.
(Sam roughly grabs Libby's arm to stop her from leaving)
SAM: No, because we both know it's true!
Dan finds them and demands that Sam quit it. Sam mutters to Libby that she said what she came to say and walks off.
Number 30
Dan is stunned by what just happened, but Sam explains that she was angry and only lashed out because she's sick of Libby undermining her all the time. Sighing, Dan says he doesn't know how many times he has to prove his love to her.
SAM: (frustrated) She's just always there! The ever-understanding friend.
DAN: Enough! There is no point to this. Just forget it, Sam. Forget everything.
(Dan charges off into the hall)
SAM: Dan! (small voice) Dan...
Ramsay Street
Steve has come out to find Miranda, who has just been to #24, and tells him that Rebecca sends her love. Walking towards her house, Didge freezes when she sees her dad, but when she sees how happy he is to see her she bolts into his arms. Steve spies a guy in a ute down the end of the street and tells his family he'll meet them inside. He angrily goes up to the man, and it's soon made apparent that Steve spent some time in the slammer with him, and that the man has a vendetta.
UTE DUDE: There's a score that needs to be settled.
Steve worriedly watches him drive away.
