Recap
Susan tells Katya she knows about her past and she's torn about what to do about it
While desperately trying to get the hospital, Max yells at Boyd for his incompetence; Boyd tells him not to take his stresses out on him.
Charlie Hoyland is born at last (awww!)
Hospital
Max and Steph look over their new arrival, deciding who he looks like: Steph thinks he has Max's nose and Max thinks he has Steph's mouth.
Lyn opens the door and is clearly struck by the sight of the Hoyland family unit and her brand-new grandson. She thinks he's beautiful and Steph's done so well.
MAX: I had something to do with him as well you know.
Lyn apologises but Max, smiling away, knows what she meant. Charlie is perfect - has all his fingers and toes which have been counted (twice). Lyn is so happy and can't stop blubbering, even though Steph tells her not to cry. Steph can't believe he's finally here.
STEPH: It's so wonderful to meet you, Charlie Hoyland.
They have some gatecrashers - Bree, Janae, Summer and Boyd. Max is cautious about letting them in as Steph's so tired but she allows them. The Timmins girls go all gushy about how gorgeous he is and Boyd looks proud and happy at the sight of his little brother.
The General Store
Katya wants Zeke to open his present but he wants to wait for Susan. Katya thinks she's forgotten and could be away for ages - who knows when Steph will give birth. Rachel reminisces about Zeke's birth - he took the longest of all the Kinski kids. His sisters want to tell the story again, even though Zeke would rather not hear it again. Rachel wants to start at the part where Alex fainted and Katya had to cut the umbilical cord.
Toadie, sitting nearby, smiles as Katya and Rachel tell the story of the stormy night on which Zeke was born: the power was out and Alex had to borrow candles from their crazy hippy neighbours. Toadie gets up and dashes off somewhere.
Hospital
Summer is marvelling at how tiny Charlie's fingernails are. Steph wants to know about Summer's spell in hospital but Summer, clearly more interested in Charlie, says that was a week ago. Bree tells them all that when she was born she had hands like dinner plates (according to Janelle).
STEPH: That's nice.
Susan asks Lyn (Nana Scully) how she's doing and Lyn says she's doing pretty good.
Boyd approaches Charlie.
BOYD: Hey there, Chucky boy!
STEPH: Not a chance, Boyd.
(Not even as a nickname). Janae loves the name Charlie and doesn't know how she'd pick a name if she was having a baby - there are so many! Max's eyebrows shoot up at the mention of her having a baby but only Boyd notices.
Toadie arrives and joins the mob. He gives Steph a kiss, telling her and Max that Charlie is pretty cute for baby, and congratulates them. Susan asks Toadie if it's time to go - family court waits for no one. Susan leaves and Steph wishes her luck. Max has to go off so Summer takes his place she can have a better look at her brother - she can't wait to take him home.
General Store
Katya tells the kids what's going to happen today. They will all be interviewed, separately then the kids with Susan and then with Katya. The report is pretty important. She wants them both to be honest and won't stop loving them, whatever happens.
KATYA: I don't care what anyone else says or does.
She warns them that stuff will come up but it will probably be exaggerated. The kids ask what but she tells them that it's just stuff - she loves them and that's what's important.
Hospital
The mob are still there.
BOYD (putting on a funny voice as CHARLIE): Hey Nana Scully, pass me around the room again - I want to give everybody another cuddle!
Lyn says he's just got here and already he's a social butterfly! Steph thinks he loves it - he finally gets to see everyone.
Bree and Summer go outside into the hallway. In the background Max and Karl are talking. Bree can't believe Rachel ignored her warnings about Stingray. Summer hopes she gets to hold Charlie before they go. Bree is glad Summer's back as she's her best friend in the whole world while Rachel is a 'loser'.
Steph's Room
Janae marvels at how soft Charlie's skin is and he looks a bit like Boyd. If he had a little boy he'd look just like Charlie.
BOYD: Yeah, well I'm not having one anytime soon, right?
She was just saying and dashes off to the gift-shop. Steph remarks that Boyd looked a little trapped. He doesn't understand chicks' fascination with babies - they won't be part of his world for a long time. She tells him he's been good. She didn't realise until now why he did what he did with Kayla - she hadn't realised what it felt like for her.
STEPH: Thank you for stopping us from making a huge mistake.
BOYD: Just doing my job.
Corridor, Erinsborough Hospital
As if the music wasn't enough to tell you, angst has made a slight return after the fluffy respite. Karl tells Max that they don't know what they're dealing with until they get Steph on the operating table. Max asks if she has a good chance - Karl says that's why they're going in now. She can have a little bit more time with bubs then they'll take her in. Max isn't happy that it has to be so soon - she's exhausted. Karl is sorry but it has to be this way.
MAX: She is going to be okay, isn't she?
KARL: I can't give you any guarantees.
Number 28
Susan can't believe the place is in such a state! Toadie tells her to relax. She should just be herself. She calls on the kids but they don't seem to be back yet. He tells her about the kids having breakfast at the GS and Susan realises she forgot Zeke's birthday. It's going to look awful, today of all days.
She thinks the kids are back but it's actually Paula Beeman from the family court.
SUSAN: I'm Susan Ke- Kinski.
That was a close call. Susan and Toadie exchange glances.
Number 28
Paula would like to meet the children. Susan admits to her that the kids aren't here but they should be back any second. Paula will just chat to her and Toadie goes off to hurry the kids up.
Lassiter's
Toadie asks Katya, Rachel and Zeke if they have any idea of the time. He tells the kids to wait in the car.
TOADIE: It's nice work. Any other little acts of sabotage you've got planned for today?
Katya starts to walk away, telling him she had no idea when Susan's appointment was - only the time of her own. He tells her she should have asked before taking the kids out. Katya thinks Susan should have been there - at least she remembered. For Katya, her brother and sister come first and it's rather telling that Susan doesn't feel the same way. Toadie thinks he's wasting his time and leaves.
Hospital
Janae got a chicken-emu type thing for Charlie which Bree thinks is pretty ugly. Janae was going to get a Magpie because of the Pies but couldn't.
Lyn and Max are by Steph's bedside. Steph's tired so Lyn takes care of shipping the kids out. Janae wants another hold of Charlie but Lyn tells her Steph is tired. The kids go and Summer and Boyd are going to follow but Steph wants the family here.
Karl comes in.
KARL: They're ready for you.
Steph just wants one more feed - half an hour. Karl reluctantly tells them he'll be back later. Max thanks him and hairkisses his wife, who's staring down at Charlie.
Number 28
Susan tells Paula that Rachel and Zeke have stability and they've all bonded through losing Alex. She's still a link to their father. Given Katya's history she wouldn't be a suitable mother: she's been absent for five years. Paula points out that she's only known the kids for six months but Susan tells her they've been intense times. This is what Alex wanted - for them all to live together.
Zeke and Rachel come home and Susan wishes Zeke a Happy Birthday. Rachel tells her that they weren't about to rush home just because Susan hadn't turned up to Zeke's birthday brekkie. Paula watches as Susan says she couldn't have helped being held up. Rachel thinks she could have: if it wasn't for Katya, Zeke would be thinking that nobody cared. Susan thinks they can discuss it later and introduces the kids to Paula.
Hospital
Steph nurses Charlie and Katya thinks she's a natural - so many mothers struggle.
MAX: Not bad for a tomboy, Steph.
Summer and Boyd were big feeders too, as Charlie is, and Boyd ribs Summer, trying to get enough points in before she leaves again. Karl and his stripey shirt make an entrance, followed by other medical staff.
KARL: Sorry. I can't stall them any longer.
Steph tells Max to burp Charlie as he takes him from her. The medical staff start to take her out of the room and Steph grasps at Summer and Boyd's hands. Max tells her that he loves her as she's wheeled away from him. Steph tells them to look after Charlie, who's sleeping in Max's arms.
Number 28
Rachel talks to Paula - she's really settled in and she was only upset with Susan earlier for Zeke's sake.
Now Zeke's talking to Paula and tells her that both Susan and Katya helped him adjust to Alex's death. Both of them really need the kids.
Cut back to Rachel, who says, if she had her way, Zeke would choose Susan as that's what she wants. It's what her dad would have wanted.
Zeke is worried Katya will be left all alone. They should all stick together: all four of them.
Sometimes Rachel wishes she could be old enough to live on her own - so she wouldn't have to choose. It's so sad that someone has to miss out.
Hospital
Katya asks Karl, nicely, if it would have hurt to give Steph a little bit more time with the baby. Karl says theatre was booked and she needed to op to save her life. Katya says sorry - she was just wondering. Karl brings up her important day and wishes her luck in her interview (although he seems very grudging about it). She thanks him, a bit bemused.
Bree reassures Summer that Steph will be fine - she's tougher than Lucy Liu and she'll totally kick this thang. Boyd gives Sum a choccy bar and Max a sandwich. Max tells Boyd to have it - he'll have some chocolate ("if you play your cards right", according to Summer).
Max takes him aside and apologises for what he said the night before. Boyd has been under so much stress and Max is very grateful for what he's done. Max asks about uni and he tells him about cutting up his first dead body - it was pretty full on but he coped with it.
BOYD: I had to.
Max hugs him.
General Store
Paula is now with Katya - they're here as her place is so small but she's hoping to get something bigger for Rachel and Zeke when Alex's money comes through. Katya dives right in and tells her that Susan must have told her things that would have 'shocked and appalled' her but she's not like that anymore and she loves her job and caring for people and she knows she's the best person to look after Rachel and Zeke. Paula tells her that Susan didn't say a bad word about her and it interests her that Katya would presume she had.
Hospital
It's now evening and Summer thanks Bree for waiting for her today. Bree says she's a professional at this stuff - things are always going wrong in her family. Summer thinks Rachel could use a friend and Bree wonders how the interview is going.
Janae asks if Boyd wants to talk (she can be deep as well as totally hot!).
BOYD: If we learn that Steph's waited too long I don't think Dad's going to handle it.
Summer and Bree listen as Janae tells him that she won't die - she knows it. Karl approaches them, telling Boyd and Summer to go in now.
Steph's Room
Max strokes Steph's head as she wakes up, asking for Charlie. Max tells her that he's asleep in the nursery. Boyd tells Summer that Steph will be fine once she's woken properly and the anaesthetic has worn off.
Karl takes Max aside and tells him that the surgeon is confident he has a good margin - they just have to wait on the pathology now. That will take a few days. Then they go straight into radiotherapy - as much for as long as Steph can handle it.
MAX: Still no guarantees.
KARL: I'm sorry, mate.
Max looks back to Steph, who's lying asleep.
