- Janelle forces Bree to re-write her book
- Kim's Combi is goooone!
Dark Road Near the Beach
Kim spies the van in the distance and runs over to it – he knew it!!! He feels around under the seat, but Dylan's money is gone.
Steph stops in to see Max, and show him all the organic fruit and veggies she bought at the Farmer's Market. Max is all…it's food…but Steph points out it's good healthy, natural food! Max replies that it isn't a cure…Steph says firmly that this is about them living normally for the next few months, that's all she asks. Max reminds her she is asking for a lot more than that…He offers to give her a hand with the bags, but she says she is still capable of wrangling a few bags! With a kiss, she is gone, and Max sits back down with his head in his hands. Kim comes in as Steph leaves, throwing all sorts of excuses at Max for not ending up at work. Max isn't in the mood for it; he has enough on his plate at the moment. And he reminds him to wipe the beach from his hair next time, before he starts with the lame excuses…
Bree and Janelle are celebrating dodging the bullet, thanks to Bree's all-nighter, with cake and milkshakes. Bree points out that they are not in the clear yet – the publisher still has the original book with 17 racy love-scenes…19 if you count the postman…Bree wants to know how Janelle will handle Kim at the meeting tomorrow, but they are interrupted when Harold comes out, stating that the General Store is closing early, and demands that everyone leave at once! As Karl is leav…hey? Karl was sitting there that whole time? Well, whaddaya know! PlotDeviceKarl notices Harold has hurt his hand, and escorts him over to the surgery to clean it up.
Connor takes a call, telling a client they don't have time to see them, as Karl brings Harold in. He looks at his hand which is rather nastily cut, and asks him how he did it. Kitchen accident? Ah…yeah…whatever. Karl points out that's not like him, but Harold says he hasn't been himself lately. Karl reminds him he is not alone in this, and he will be back to his old self in no time.
Steph is standing against the bench, rubbing her belly and singing ‘Hush Little Baby' to Charlie. Max comes in and Steph calls him over to feel – Charlie loves being sung to, and Steph and Max have a kiss as their baby kicks away. Steph says she saved him some dinner – her first organic meal! Steph catches the look in Max's eyes, and reminds him she made her decision.
MAX: I know, and I'm sorry, but I can't do it, I can't sit bye and watch you die, Steph, it's not gonna happen.
MAX: I love you. And I want you to have the treatment. But if you won't…fair warning, Steph – I will take matters into my own hands…
Say it with me, people…eeeverything will turn fiiine – there wiiiill be a happy ending!!!
There will be a happy ending! There will be a happy ending! Ooh…sorry, I missed what she said coz I had my head in the sand. But I think it was something like she is sorry, and she loves him, and yes, of course, she will start treatment straight away.
Oh…that's not what she said? Damn…
Steph says she doesn't care what he says – she's not putting her baby at risk. Max says that EVERYONE says the risk is minimal, but Steph says this child is a gift, and she's not throwing that away!
MAX: Do you wanna die? Is that it?
STEPH: How can you even say that!
MAX: Well then have the god-damn treatment, will ya! Look, it's early days, you've got every chance in the world of beating this thing again!
STEPH: But what if it does affect the baby?
MAX: It won't.
STEPH: Oh Max, how can you say that? How can you be so sure?
MAX: You've got a tumor - inside of you now – growing! You're just happy to let that continue?
STEPH: You think that doesn't scare me? This isn't about just me anymore, Max. I have to think of someone else now…
Steph asks him to imagine how traumatic it would be if she did have an operation or chemo – what would that do to the baby? Max can see that, but he asks what about her? Steph says that ever since they decided to have children, she came second. Isn't that what having kids is all about? Max says that it isn't – not that kind of sacrifice. Steph says that he'd lay down his life for Summer and Boyd any day, and Max says yes – but this is not an either/or situation.
MAX: How can I make you see that?
STEPH: And how can I make YOU see that? In a couple of months I will deliver our baby, and then I will do whatever it takes to fight this.
MAX: And what if it's too late? Our child's going to grow up without a mother.
STEPH: I've told you already, unless you can guarantee me 100% that it won't hurt Charlie, there's nothing you can say to change my mind.
MAX: Listen, I'm your husband. I love you.
STEPH: I love you too.
MAX: I don't want to bury another wife, do you understand that Steph? So I'm begging you…please…save yourself.
STEPH: I'm saving our baby.
MAX: I meant what I said, Steph…I can't just stand by and let this happen.
STEPH: It's my body Max. You can't make me have treatment.
Kim comes in and Janelle congratulates him on spending time with Dylan…she obviously doesn't know exactly what happened…Kim asks if she really thinks they are on a winner with her book. She thinks so – she thinks they'll even get an advance check tomorrow! Kim wants to let her down gently…the book is kinda…safe…it needs a bit of spicing up! Janelle and Bree grin as he tells them a bit of spicing up of the characters, and it'll be perfect!! Janelle happily agrees to sex things up a little.
Harold has come to visit Paul again, and Paul notices he has hurt his hand. Harold avoids it by saying how dark it is in the house – it's become too much, Paul can't handle it anymore. Harold asks if there is anything he could take back if he could. Paul says he is losing his mind, everything is out of control and he doesn't recognise himself anymore. Harold says he feels the same way! Paul says this is ridiculous – Harold is the person everyone is supposed to be! Harold apologises over and over, before making a hasty exit.
Kim is re-reading Janelle's book, and thinks it is GOLD – he can't believe how quickly they re-wrote…wink wink…he can't wait till the publisher sees the ‘new' version. Melody comes I and GUSHES over Janelle, who introduces her to her ‘business advisor' husband. Kim…with a ‘T'…
Toadie is explaining to Max that no one can force Steph to have treatment, and only in the most extreme cases it would only be if there was immediate danger. Max thinks breast cancer is pretty immediate, but Toadie reminds him there is no way of knowing a delay in treatment would cause her death. Max says every doctor agrees in is an un-necessary risk, but Toadie says he is tied – it's Steph's decision to make. Max asks what if she wasn't capable of making that decision right now? Toadie says that is a really big step… he could try to remove her medical decision making powers, but it's very difficult…it's not a path he wants to go down. If he does it, things will turn ugly fast – if he did do it, Steph could fight him in court, and if she didn't do that, then there is every chance it could cost him his marriage…is he prepared for that?
Melody thinks that Janelle's book has the makings of a great novel, but Kim says wait till she reads the re-write! Melody is like whaaaat? Re-write? Kim tells her it is very racy, but melody thought the book was racy enough as it was! She doesn't want pornography!!! Janelle tells Kim to shut up and let her get a bloody word in sideways!!! Janelle says that she will do anything Melody likes, she doesn't mind how much they change her book! Melody thinks with a bit of work, she could become a marketable personality, although her manuscript needs a bit of work. It's too short for starters - it needs at least another 10 000 words. Kim says if they give them the advance, Janelle will be head down, bum up! Melody is all ‘advance? Wha? Non-comprehendo!' and Kim and Janelle are all like ‘maaaajor bummer duuuude…'
Hoyland Kitchen – where there *will* be a happy ending!!!
*spits out a mouthful of sand*
Steph is sitting in the kitchen crying. Max comes home and she rushes into his arms, sobbing. Brace yourself for more quotage, I can't think through all these tears!!!
STEPH: *sob* Oh, I don't want to fight with you, I can't stand it!
MAX: Oh, I know, I know – me neither.
STEPH: *sob* I'm so sorry about last night.
MAX: Me too. Things just got out of hand.
STEPH: *sob* I've been thinking about what you said to me. I can't hurt the baby, Max, I can't even risk it, do you understand?
MAX: Yeah, I do, I do.
STEPH: *sob* But I don't wanna die, either…
MAX: Hey, you are NOT gonna die Steph, I won't let that happen, ok?
STEPH: *sob* I've been going over and over it in my head, and…I'm so scared, there's no way out – I want my baby, but…I wanna grow old with you-ou-ou…
MAX: Hey, hey hey, it's ok (kisses her all over the face) it's ok. (hugs her tighter)
STEPH: *SOBS* It's too hard, Max, I can't make this decision! (Although she was wheezing so much it kinda came out ‘dehihihion'…or, you know…something)
MAX: It's alright, it's alright…hey, I'm gonna take care of you, it's alright.
*has a nervous breakdown* This happy ending ain't lookin' too happy is it??? *cries* Honestly, all this drama - it's like something out of a Soapie!!! Oh...hang on...
Toadie gets off the phone from Tim. Conner has faxed through the weekly billings to Tim, without consulting Toadie. Toadie angrily points out Tim now knows they billed a measly 10 hours in a week! Conner says it's the truth – if he hadn't have been playing computer games and slobbing back clients, he wouldn't have to do this! Toadie knows Connor is right, and decides that from now on there is no job too big or small! PlotDeviceKarl comes in with a note he found on Harold's front door for Connor. Connor tells them Harold has gone to Tasmania…and he wants to thank him for being there for him. we cut between Connor and Harold, wheeling his suitcase along to the OneAndOnlyBusStop, as the letter continues to be read. Harold writes that he is glad Connor is moving on with his life…unfortunately, he is unable to do the same. He is battling anger and no longer at peace. There is only emptiness. And so he is going. He wants to find his old self again. If there is anything left to find…
Max comes in and Karl and Connor leave. Toadie says he thought Max was going to think about this, and max says he has. He's made his decision.
MAX: I want Steph declared mentally incompetent. I want power over her medical decisions.
WHOOOOOOOOOOSH Hear that? That was the sound of my happy ending going *right* out the window. Excuse me while I go and drown my sorrows.
