- Steph giving Max her ultimatum about kids.
Pub (Continues straight from last night...)
MAX: Right, well that's it then. Even if it means the end of us.
STEPH: Not that I ever want that to happen.
MAX: Problem is, where do we go from here?
STEPH: Well I dunno, but look, whatever happens I don't want you to think that I pressured you into having kids.
MAX: You've been honest with me, I'm going to be honest with you.
STEPH: Well it'd be worse in a way if we did have kids and I knew deep down that you resented it somehow.
MAX: That would never happen, I love you too much. Now I understand how important this is to you...us. I'm gonna need some time to think about it.
STEPH: Okay... but hey, please don't listen to anything mum says.
MAX: (laughs) If I decide to have a child with you, it's gonna be because it's exactly what I want. Hey, we've been through a lot, Scully, we can get through this.
Number 30
Toadie and Stu ask Taj if he's seen Sam Tinselman yet, and Taj says he hasn't. The two boys think up crazy scenarios for Taj so he can give Sam his movie, like getting stuck in a lift on purpose with him, but Taj doesn't think it's a good idea.
Scullys
Lyn has been busy baking and she also made Max a special casserole, obviously to apologise for butting in, but Lyn just says she's being neighbourly. When Joe goes to work, Steph tells Lyn that Max has agreed to think about having a family.
Coffee Shop
Max is confiding in Izzy about what's going on between himself and Steph. Izzy is being protective and tells him not to let his opinions get swept under the carpet. Promise me that you'll do what you wanna do. Not what you think you should do.
Pub
Karl and his surgeon friend Stanford are playing pool and reminiscing about old times in first year med school. They talk about the slow death of their lives, marriage, kids, retirement. Stanford tells Karl that he's not going down without a fight though, and invites him out that night promising that the secret to eternal youth [will] be divulged.
Lassiter's Complex - Lassiter's Hotel
Toadie and Stu catch up with Taj and gleefully tell him that they left reminders of Taj everywhere in room 711 so the movie guy will sit up and take notice of him (like putting his picture up on the wall, and putting chocolates with his face on them all over the place). Taj tries to remain calm and informs them that Mr Tinselman is in room 117, and they've actually defaced 72-year-old Mrs Brown's room. The boys run away.
Coffee Shop
Steph is getting lunch from Izzy and is chatting normally, but Izzy can't mask her feelings on the kids issue and brings it up. She says to Steph that them trying to be friends isn't working.
STEPH: Well, I am trying, Izzy.
IZZY: Yeah, but we keep butting heads. Maybe we should just realize that we're two very different people.
STEPH: [nods] So what's this got to do with Max?
IZZY: It means that from now on I'm not going to tip toe around you, when there's issues that are important to Max, to the kids.
STEPH: You're talking about us starting a family.
IZZY: Yeah, well what sort of sister would I be if I didn't speak my mind? Max loves you unconditionally.
STEPH: This is none of your business, can I just pay for my lunch now please? I can't believe he'd even discuss this with you.
IZZY: Families confide in one another, like you talking to Lyn. Just don't make the mistake that could cause you pain.
Steph storms out.
Lassiter's Hotel
Toadie tells Taj and Stu he's just hooked up Taj's media project to Mr Tinselman's in-house movie, so instead of 'Tootsie' he'll get 'Taj-ey'! Taj is so flustered about everything he's mucked up the sign he was making out the front. It now reads, 'Licket Club Function: Eat children for half the price!'
Coffee Shop
Joe is telling Lyn that the ute's playing up, but he doesn't want to give more money to Lou when Lou still owes him for Trixie's dressing room. Stu and Toadie walk in and Joe asks Stu if he'd like some work. Stu hesitates for a moment but then decides he could use the money.
Lassiter's
Taj is getting one complaint phone call after the other about his movie interrupting Tootsie. He keeps putting everyone on hold until his final call - from Chloe Lambert.
Pub
Stanford is telling Karl that he'll be away from his wife on business for a couple of months. He says that he'll miss her but there are other things to keep him occupied - cue Izzy and her mates entering the pub. Karl gives her a wave, and Stanford is pleased that Karl knows her. Stanford gets up to buy the girls a drink. Karl and Izzy look at each other uncomfortably.
Lassiter's
A lady comes up to Taj and asks for another key to room 117 because she lost hers. It turns out that Sam Tinselman is a girl - and she saw Taj's movie. She liked the 'heart on your sleeve' element and also finds out that he just got fired for his efforts. Sam says he has an eye for storytelling, and asks if he's got time for a coffee. Taj hastily says yes.
Pub
Stanford chats up the ladies while Karl sits by himself and continues to look at Izzy. Stanford sits back with him and says that one of the girls, Debbie, has her eye on Karl. Karl tries to steer Stanford off the subject but Stanford says if Karl wasn't a little curious he would have left by now. Don't kid yourself Karl, we both know why we're here. Karl looks at Izzy talking with her friends.
Pub
Stanford is back with the ladies, bar Izzy who is up ordering a drink. She wonders why Karl isn't at their table, and he says he thought he'd let Stanford live out his midlife crisis alone. He also asks Izzy to sit and have a drink with him. Stanford leaves with Izzy's friends after Karl declines to join them.
IZZY: You sure you want that drink with me, it seems like you want to be alone.
KARL: To be honest, it's been a really weird evening and you're the only person I can talk to about this sort of thing. And that's not a well-worn 'my wife doesn't understand me' line.
IZZY: To be honest, my friends were starting to bore me.
KARL: Huh, don't get me started on Stanford.
IZZY: His chat up lines were so ancient!
KARL: Yes, I think he perfected them in first year med school.
IZZY: I can't believe my friends thought he was a ) interesting, and b ) single. You know um, Debbie thought you were cute.
KARL: That's what Stanford reckoned. You know, he tells me that he misses his wife, then he goes and does that. He's so casual about it, it's like he's had a moral bypass or something.
IZZY: And that's not your style?
KARL: No, it isn't. Look we need to talk about this, ever since Lou's wedding...
IZZY: Look, I'm sorry if I was harsh, but I meant what I said. Now that you and Susan are apart, things are just... different.
KARL: I don't want them to be different. I value your friendship. In fact, right now I think you're probably the best friend I've got, and I wouldn't want to throw that away with talk about...
IZZY: ... Sex?
KARL: To be frank, yes! You're a very, very attractive woman. But I wouldn't want to complicate things further with Susan, I've been down that road before.
IZZY: Yeah, well, I've had my fair share of being the other woman.
KARL: We have fun together, don't we?
IZZY: Yeah, we do.
KARL: Well that's all I want. [Puts on mock-sad voice] I just need someone to talk to!
Izzy laughs.
Number 30
Taj tells Toadie and Stu all his tales of woe due to their meddling... and then lets them in on the good news that Sam Tinselman gave him a job as a runner on her new film. He leaves for Sydney in a couple of days. The boys are excited but also a little sad that he's going and they tell him what a good, honest bloke he is (yeah, aside from the cheating...). Toadie asks Stu to move back in and he says he will. They stacks on Taj for a group hug.
Hoylands
Max and Steph are cooing over Boyd and Summer's baby pictures.
STEPH: Is it working?
MAX: Is what working?
STEPH: Is this helping you wanna have more babies?
Max sighs.
STEPH: I can't believe I just said that.
MAX: Ah, it's okay. Look at these faces.
STEPH: They're so cute.
MAX: Yeah. I guess I'm just, well, kind of petrified. You can understand that, can't you?
STEPH: Yeah.
MAX: That's just me being scared. Oh I tell you Steph, it's the greatest thing in the world. There's no one I'd rather share it with than you.
STEPH: What do you mean?
MAX: (grins) Bring it on!
STEPH: Oh!
She jumps on him and hugs him.
MAX: Hey, but you are doing the nappies!
STEPH: Anything, anything!
They laugh, kiss and hug.
Between Ramsay Street and the Scullys' window
Lyn can see Karl and Izzy stumbling out of a taxi. It's 2am. Izzy says that Karl will have to make her that coffee he promised. Lyn looks worriedly after them.
