Carmella figures out that Connor is really scared of her dad.
Chris tries to convince Serena into doing more modelling for him.
Susan and Karl discuss their problem.
Lil, Sky and Harold are watching as David puts his Christmas decorations on and Sky tells him her version was better. Lou and Trixie then walk out, as well as the Hoylands and the Scully and Trixie hands out song books and they are start singing Christmas carols.
Karl is looking from the window and tells Susan that they're singing carols. Susan says she can hear them and when he asks her if she wants to go, she says she's still got some packing to do, but suggests he go out instead. He says he's “not in the mood” and watches her as she does more packing.
Chris and Serena are at the Coffee Shop and Serena tells him that her mum and granddad are at home. He then gives her a present and she tells him she feels guilty that she didn't get him anything. Serena asks if she can see what it is and he says “discretely”, so obviously taking his advice, she pulls the whole black little thing out of the bag and says she loves it. Chris tells her the best gift he could give him was to wear “that”. Serena is reluctant at first, but Chris manages to sweet talk her into doing it.
Karl is sitting on the sofa whilst Susan folds socks etc and throws them into a suitcase. She starts making small talk about some socks that she got for him, but Karl cuts her off…
Susan sits down rather slowly, looking...exhausted actually.
KARL: I think we both know this trip is not going to work out. Maybe we just…we just need some time apart.
Susan looks at him, a little teary eyed before looking away.
Serena has just changed and Chris compliments her, saying that she and the camera have some sort of chemistry. He then kisses her and that seems to freak Serena out. As she's about to leave Chris tells her what he'd really love is for her to stay all night and wake up in his arms on Christmas morning, but she tells him maybe another time and leaves.
The Bishops come in still singing carols and Lil offers to make eggnog, Harold of course refuses, but Lil and David decide to have some anyway. Harold then picks up the TV guide to see what's on and he and David start playing movie trivia, but when Harold asks whether Sky has seen the movie she seems distracted. He quickly pegs that she misses her dad and brother and she admits this is the first Christmas she's had without them. Harold asks her whether she regrets not having gone back for the holidays, but she tells him she wanted to spend Christmas with him. Serena then walks in and her parents ask her where she's been and she tells them she's been doing some last minute Christmas shopping. Again she employs Sky as her reluctant accomplice in her lies.
It's dark at the Hoylands and Summer sticks her head out the door and runs to the tree. The scene then cuts forward to Summer sitting on the coffee table just as Boyd walks in and is quickly greeted by an enthusiastic “Merry Christmas” from her. He replies, “Merry Christvaahh.” Next cut is to the Hoyland kids playing snap and Summer winning the hand just as Izzy walks out, “Oo, is it time yet?” Izzy, a little startled, tells her they have to wait for Max and Steph, who finally make their grand entrance at 7:30 and finally Summer is allowed to open her presents.
Next we cut to Max sitting near the tree and handing out presents. Firstly he comes up with Steph present to Izzy and Izzy's present to Steph. A pie making book and Legally Blonde. They both act very nicely about their presents and try not to seem offended by them. Max then picks up the present Steph got him… A watch! (Oh ho! Could this be trouble in paradise?) An expensive one too, (It's the end! It really is the end!) with the following inscribed on it. You'll always live in my heart. Love Steph. Izzy and the kids then go off to make breakfast, leaving Max and Steph to discuss their upcoming stay at a 5 star hotel, with “breakfast in bed, massages, you wearing…just that.” They kiss one another and say “Merry Christmas”.
Lyn is talking to Joe on the phone and telling him that the girls haven't rung yet because it's not Christmas there till my birthday (boxing day). After they hang up, Lyn and Valda exchange their presents, Valda gives Lyn an album of all the pictures that mean a lot to her and Lyn gives Valda a locket with a picture of her in it as a baby. Valda gets teary eyed, because she's never had a card that said “Happy Christmas mum” before. She goes off to find tissues.
Izzy walks out with a chair, muttering to herself about the amount of Christmassy goodness people can handle, and just as she settles in, Lyn and Valda rock up. Meanwhile in the background a taxi arrives and we see Karl and Susan appearing after a bit. They shout their season's greetings over to the Ks, but they just wave back with fake smiles that disappear after a few seconds. Valda comments on how light they're travelling.
KARL: Let's not do this.
SUSAN: Come on Karl, you can't have it both ways. Thank you (to the cab driver). You wanted this.
KARL: I know but…
SUSAN: (cuts him off) Just… We agreed last night that I would tell the kids that you can't come because your patient's too sick. They'll understand.
KARL: You will call me when you get there.
SUSAN: I will.
KARL: OK… You have a safe flight.
He leans forward and kisses her on the cheek, before opening the taxi door for her and they just look at one another as the taxi drives off. (Why the hell didn't he drop her off?)
Valda asks why Karl isn't going as well, and Lyn trying not to pry says something must've come up. Valda wants to go over and ask, but Izzy and then Lyn stop her.
Karl walks up the stairs and looks back at Izzy before disappearing into the house. Dahl starts demanding food and Karl tells her to shut up. He leans against the sofa and looks up at the gift he bought for Susan, sitting on the dining table and starts crying.
Max is teaching Summer how to eat prawns, whilst Lyn has a bit of trouble eating a prawn with one hand. After a brief discussion about the oysters and then the fish market. Lyn then gets up to find a bowl and Izzy wants to check on the salmon I think, but Steph snaps, telling them she'll do it (the Ramsay st kitchen nazi?) and everyone just quietens down. Until Valda tells them about the Kennedy's! Max thinks he stayed back because of doctor stuff, while Valda insists that doctors don't work on the holidays. “You mark my words,” She says, “There's more to this then meets the eye." Meanwhile Izzy listens quietly before walking in the direction of the kitchen.
Connor opens the door to Trixie's place revealing Rocco and Carmella. He stares at them before letting them in after a few suggestive words like “Well, can we come in?” Trixie and Lou walk up just as they come in and Carmella gives Lou a suit she was holding, which Rocco says is a gift. Throughout the grown ups little chit chat, the two young not-lover-yet look at one another and smile. After Rocco and Carmella are gone, Trixie comments on Connor's behaviour, but Lou covers for him and says Connor wouldn't be that stupid.
Karl opens the door for Izzy carrying a massive plateful of food. Izzy not so subtly mentions having seen Susan getting into a cab. (How ironic, I'm sure Karl must've missed that from where he was standing at the time - right next to her!) Karl tells her Susan thought it'd be good if they had some time apart and Izzy apologises thinking it was her fault. Karl then tells her that they just made some excuses because they didn't want to spoil everybody else's Christmas and Izzy tells him that if needs to talk to someone. He says thank you before she even finishes her sentence. The phone then rings and it's Mal. Then Billy….well Bill, is what he seems to have insisted Karl call him. Izzy realising that Karl will be on the phone for a while excuses herself, but listens near the door for a bit before finally closing it.
Harold is snoring in his chair, whilst Lil seems to be suffering from the well known Christmas syndrome of overeating. David tells her he tried to warn her. Meanwhile the girls are washing the dishes and it seems Sky is still unhappy with Serena. Serena's phone then rings and when her parents ask who it is, she says it's Alex someone, though we know it's Chris. He has made a booking for a hotel that night and wants her to come. Serena seems keen on going but she can't figure out a way to shake her parents and Chris suggests she tell them that she'll be at Alex's place. Serena tells him she'll be there.
