Lou cheers on Ben – Phil asks Ruth to marry him – Ben's car goes over another, crashing and bursting into flames
Ruth keeps screaming Ben's name. Race officials run onto the track and begin to spray the car with foam.
Carrying on from last season Mandi accompanies Anne to Billy's room. Unknown to them, behind the door Caitlin and Billy are kissing! Mandi opens the door for Anne to see this. Billy, shocked, says he can explain but Anne tells him not to dare trying, and leaves. Billy begins to pursue her and Caitlin says he told her they'd broken up. Bill says they have but trails off, apologising to her before leaving.
Outside Anne brushes the tears from her face before heading off. Seconds later Bill appears but can't see any sign of her. Nonetheless he runs across the road.
Karl and Sarah are still going for it. Karl eventually pulls away, laughing a little and saying this is insane, and he doesn't know what they were thinking. Sarah believes it took them both by surprise and tries to touch his cheek but he recoils. He says he's sorry, he was just trying to comfort her and now he feels like some sort of sleaze. She says, on the contrary, he was being very sweet and they went overboard a bit. Karl says he doesn't think it's that simple – he's a married man! Sarah assures him it was a silly moment and it isn't a big deal. Karl is certain he shouldn't have done it. She tells him that it's in the past already and she's going to get back to work. Karl follows her example, doing stuff he was going to leave until tomorrow. It never happened, says Sarah. From the look on Karl's face he knows fine and well it did happen.
Back at the racetrack Lou runs towards Ben's mangled car but is kept back by race officials. Ruth is in close pursuit but she too is held back. An ambulance arrives. The paramedics manage to get Ben out as Ruth continues to wrestle with officials. He's unconscious and they put him on a stretcher. Dutch looks on in shock. The ambulance leaves, pursued by a police car with lights and sirens blaring. Inside the police car are Phil and Ruth. Ruth is crying and Phil tries to comfort her. She says she's just got him back and now this. Phil tells her not to do this to herself. He's getting the best of care and needs her to be strong.
Sarah is staring at nothing, no doubt thinking about a certain kiss. Karl comes out his office with his briefcase and tries to make light remarks about paperwork. He tells her she should go home and wonders how Ben got on. She tells him to calm down – he's making her nervous. He apologises and she says she doesn't want this to ruin things. She tells him to go home and hands him his briefcase. He follows her suggestion, telling her he'll see her tomorrow.
Anne walks down the street, looking upset. She looks at the ring on her finger and pulls it off. After a moment she puts it back on.
Billy's Hotel Room
Mandi asks if Caitlin is coming with her and the team but she wants to stay a while longer at the hotel. Mandi says it's a waste to miss out on things because of Billy. Billy returns, having not found Anne. Mandi says she'll tell the others that they'll see them at dinner and leaves. Caitlin says maybe Anne has finally got the message about Billy not wanting to be with her, but Billy's not sure that's how he feels. Caitlin says he should make up his mind – it isn't fair on her. Billy says the kiss did mean something but he still cares about Anne. It's such a mess. Caitlin says he better figure it out – the way he's going Anne is not the only one getting hurt.
Phil and Ruth sit waiting. Phil brings them some coffee. The clock ticks by. Ruth stands up, and throws her coffee container in the bin. Time passes by and Ruth lays her head on Phil's shoulder. Finally some nurses appear, wheeling a gurney down the corridor. It's Ben and he's still unconscious. The doctor informs them that he's carried out some tests - Ben has a depressed fracture of the skull, which is pressing on the temporal lobe. They're going to take him into theatre to sort it out. When Phil asks whether he's going to be alright the doctor says that if Ben regains consciousness they will be better able to assess that.
Susan stands sorting out a vase of flowers when Karl comes in to find her standing behind the door. He's surprised, having not expecting her back so soon. She's missed him. She spots a splodge on his shirt and he dismisses it as ink or something. Susan has found a house – a little gem – and admits that, until she started looking for the house without him, she didn't fully understand the repercussions of the move to Wangaratta. Karl asks if it makes her realise what she's giving up and she reiterates that she isn't changing her mind. But there are some good points: eating in bed, sleeping with the window closed. ‘You won't miss me at all', says Karl. ‘Don't be silly', she tells him. She loves him for going along with it and thanks him. Karl says words can't express how much he's going to miss her – leaving him to fend for himself. As he hugs her we see a pained look on his face and we know he's thinking about a certain something that happened earlier on.
Billy's Hotel Room
Caitlin comes into Billy's room. They'll be leaving soon and Simon is shouting them dinner. Billy suddenly springs up from the bed, saying they have to find Anne. Caitlin tells him he's crazy – he'll never find her in a city this size. Billy tells her to cover for him at the dinner. Caitlin tells him to promise that he'll be on the bus whether he finds Anne or not – there will be repercussions for both of them if Simon finds out. Billy dashes off.
Susan shows Karl the design of the house. Karl tells her maybe she should take the tool kit to sort out one of the squeaky doors and they should get some deadlocks, even though it's a country town. Susan wonders what's going on – he normally never lets anyone near the tool kit. ‘What's wrong with being nice?' says Karl. There's a knock at the door - it's Sarah! Karl goes outside, telling her Susan's home and he'll see her tomorrow. Then Susan invites her in. Sarah doesn't want to intrude but Susan insists Karl get her a drink as she shows her the plans of her new house.
Billy walks down a street, unaware Anne is next to him looking at a shop window. He looks around the bay and back to dry land, seeing someone in with brown hair on the phone. When he rouses their attention it turns out not to be Anne and he moves on.
Sarah makes her excuses to go. Susan says she thought Sarah had to talk to Karl about something and makes her tell him, despite Sarah wanting to leave it until tomorrow. She mentions something about her nursing course. Susan invites her to have another drink just as there is another knock at the door. It's Lou, looking for Sarah. He tells her about the accident and it's very serious.
Anne gets on the bus for Melbourne. Billy spots her and pleads for her to talk to him for a minute. He says he's sorry – about Caitlin and everything. He's so messed up. Anne says she has to think about it for a while. He wants her to stay but Anne hates the thought of having to come home on the bus with Caitlin and all her pals. She tearfully tells him she has to go and gets on the bus, breaking down and not looking at him as it pulls away.
Sarah knew from the start that the race was a bad idea. Lou tells her she couldn't have talked Ben out of it and she says he wouldn't have wanted her too, with his sponsorship. Lou hopes she isn't accusing him of anything. Ruth tells them not to argue. Phil tells them to go and he'll wait with Ruth but neither want to leave. Suddenly the doctor appears in theatre garb. The most positive news he has is that Ben is breathing alone, but there is little sign of returning consciousness. He suggests they go home, maybe they will have better news in the morning but Ruth says no, even when Phil tries to convince her. Ruth then remembers Anne is getting home and Lance – someone has to tell them. Toadie is with them, Lou tells her and they'll be okay.
Billy and Caitlin walk into Ramsay Street the next morning in silence. Caitlin asks what he's going to do and Billy wants to talk to Anne. Caitlin doesn't see the point, but he doesn't want Anne to hate him. Caitlin says she's probably still asleep and Billy, agreeing, decides to crash for a bit, then come back. He's too confused at the moment.
Caitlin knocks on the door and Anne answers, asking what she wants. She tells her Billy is over her – why does she think he came to Sydney with her, was kissing her? ‘People make mistakes' says Anne. ‘People change,' says Caitlin, ‘they get sick being with the one girl'. Anne says she's been after Billy since she first got there. Well, she isn't going to get him without a fight.
