Luke asks Ren to give their relationship another chance. She says no.
Karl confesses to Marlene that he was behind the "gnomic incidents".
Susan is about to announce the winner of the student World Vision essay competition.
The winner is Brett who is chuffed! Everyone congratulates him - Brett is off to Canberra and may win a trip to Africa. Libby looks very disappointed so Brett tries to play down his win by saying it's no big deal. Libby rolls her eyes and heads off home. Brett waits until Libby is out of earshot, then shuts the door and all the windows.
Luke and Jen are cleaning out the fridge. Ren is going for a job as a sales assistant. Luke doesn't think it's really a job Ren would like, but she says she needs the money.
When Ren has gone, Luke tells Jen he's going to change his tactics with Ren and try to romance her. Jen warns him not to be phoney - women can pick it up a mile off.
Outside the Coffee Shop
Sam and Annalise ask Karl where they're taking him for dinner because he lost the bet about the gnomes. Karl reckons he didn't lose the bet, he cancelled it.
Olivia, Melissa and a few others are talking about Hannah. LIbby comes in and sits down with Brett. She tells him that Brett won the essay competition. Libby thinks their essays were very similar, so she doesn't know how the judges could have picked between them. Karl comes in wearing Billy's jacket and the girls laugh derisively. Then Phil comes in, also wearing the jacket. Billy almost sinks through the floor in embarrassment.
Jen is hanging the ram's skull in the living room. Helen hates it but tries to be tactful. Just then, Brett comes in and Helen looks to him support, but he thinks the skull is amazing(!). Brett tells them that he's won the World Vision essay competition and he's off to Canberra. Holly the dog barks at the skull.
Susan is home for lunch and pretending not to watch soap operas. Libby comes in and Susan sympathises that she didn't win the essay competition. She suggests that she could interview Brett when he gets back from Canberra for an article. Libby says she could do an article before and after - as long as she can convince her editor.
Ren comes home. There's a message on her answerphone from a bloke (sounds like Luke!) saying he's been watching her and wants to get to know her by taking her out to dinner tonight. When the message ends, Luke comes up behind her with a red rose.
LUKE: I mean it, Ren. You're the only one. What do you say?
Billy is being taunted about his jacket again and Melissa stands up for him. She tells the girl that her taunting is getting boring.
OLIVIA: So what's the story, Mel? You soft on Kennedy or what?
Garden of Number 28
Brett is reading Libby's article about Mark and Lucy and think it's obvious who the protagonists are, even though Libby has changed the names. They talk about the essays and Libby says that Brett deserved to win - even though she's insanely jealous. Libby thinks Brett will win through to go to Africa for sure. She tells him she wants to do an article on him and he reluctantly agrees.
Red tells Luke that she doesn't want to play games with him anymore. Luke says he really likes her and he was afraid of commitment before - he put on a cool guy facade. He says it wasn't the real him, but Ren says she thinks it is. He says he wants a permanent relationship too. Ren says Luke is just trying to get around her, but Luke says they could just start as friends and go from there. Ren tells him that he can take her out to dinner and they'll see how it goes.
Sam is on a break from work and Annalise comes to chat to him. They want to get Karl to pay on his debt. Annalise picks up the Erinsborough News and reads Libby's latest article. Sam realises straight away that the article is about Mark. Annalise gets cross and says the article writer should be stopped.
Luke is explaining to Jen that he wants to make a good impression on Ren tonight, so could he change at No.26 and then go around and pick Ren up for dinner: it would create a better atmosphere than just coming out of his room. Jen agrees.
Jen admires the skull and Phil looks wibbly about it.
The girls put a note on Melissa's back reading "I Love Billy". Billy takes the note off her back and Melissa storms out. Billy wonders what's really going on.
Susan tells Karl that he should pay up on the bet with Annalise and Sam, otherwise he'll be considered a bad sport. Anyway, if he doesn't, she'll make him sleep in the garage(!)
Outside The Pub (later)
Karl, Susan, Annalise and Sam are out for dinner. Sam orders the lobster. Karl nearly faints but Susan tells him not to be so stingy. Annalise and Susan order the lobster too!
Inside the Pub
Ren is a bit on edge. Luke tells her that her hair is really beautiful by candlelight - in fact, all of her is. Ren says this version of Luke is a huge improvement on Mr Cool. But it's a bit soon for her to know if she can like him again. Luke says he'll have to go before dessert - he's got a late-night shift. But he'll run Ren home first.
Libby's editor has agreed that she can do the story on Brett. Brett isn't sure that people will be interested in his story. Libby reveals that her editor wants her to go along to canberra with Brett to cover the story!
Ren and LUke arrive home. Luke has a surprise for her in the kitchen - a cake. He tries to put his arms around Ren, but she's not very impressed.
REN: I think I was pretty stupid to imagine that leopards could change their spots.
She presses Luke's hand into the cake and stomps off to her room.
