- Gaby tells Cody that she's put on a lot of weight already with her pregnancy
- Julie offers to work at the newssagency full time. Phil is pleased.
- Mark tells Gaby he's off to his interview for the pageant.
- Danni rants at Cheryl that the baby might be "a retard" and she should get rid of it. Cheryl slaps her.
Mark is all dressed up in his suit (it's light green) and wonders if he's got a chance. Annalise glowers at him a bit and he reminds her that they agreed not to fight about the pageant anymore. Annalise is looking forward to being the next "Miss Erinsborough"(!)
Gaby asks Cody to be her birth support person - to be there when the baby is born, and before too. Cody is pleased. She says she doesn't know a lot about giving birth, but it'll be good experience for knowing whether she wants to do medicine or not.
LOU: Danni said what?!
CHERYL: That it was disgusting I'd even think about having this baby, especially if there's going to be problems. "Retard" is the word she used.
LOU: Why, that little...! And after what she said yesterday. I ought to...
CHERYL:(crying a bit) I already have, I even slapped her face.
CHERYL: It's the first time I've hit her.
LOU: Sweetheart, don't get upset, she deserved that.
CHERYL:(crying) I know she did, but I still feel rotten. Oh, Lou. I have to make up my mind, should I have this test or shouldn't I?
LOU: Well, whatever you decide is OK by me, you know that.
Julie tells Cody off for reading the magazines without buying them. Cody tells her about becoming Gaby's birth support person, so is reading birth- related magazines.
Phil is wondering which magazines to carry - there are so many these days.
Lou sees Danni, just off to school.
LOU: Just a minute, Danni.
LOU: You overstepped the mark with your mother this morning.
DANNI: She asked for my opinion and she got it!
LOU: From what I hear, you were downright cruel!
DANNI: I don't care! I don't think you should be having a baby at her age! Any kind of baby! Anyway, what right do you have to talk to me like this? You may have got my mother pregnant, but you're not my father!
LOU: No, and I'm damn glad of that.
He opens the door.
LOU: I wouldn't claim a kid as selfish as you!
He slams the door behind her.
Mark is at his interview for the pageant. As he talks to the panel, Danni rushes up to him in tears asking to talk. He says he'd better take her to the Coffee Shop and is just walking off with her when the panel ask what's going on. Mark says that he'll have to leave the interview now.
Cheryl asks Brett to talk to Danni again and Lou reminds him that Cheryl needs all the support she can get. He agrees to try and they both comfort Cheryl.
LOU: This baby is going to be the best thing that could ever happen to us!
CHERYL: I just want Danni to understand all of it.
BRETT: She'll come round, Mum. Just give her time, you know that.
The panel are still interviewing the pageant candidates. Annalise is next up.
She tells them all about herself, without letting them get a word in edgeways! Even when they do ask a question, she just babbles on!
Julie refuses to sell Brett a magazine about "oriental culture" saying he should be 18. She claims it's full of sex and violence! Brett protests that Julie hasn't even read the magazine, but she makes him put it back.
On the way out, he moans to Phil about it. Phil says it's fine - it's not an over- eighteen publication. He makes Julie sell it to him.
PAM: So...it wasn't menopause with you after all.
PAM: I see.
CHERYL: Well, you never know, Pam, if you keep up the practise...!
PAM: Oh, no, no, no way! I've done my share!
They laugh. Cheryl asks Pam for advice as a nurse - what does she think about the amniocentesis and the risk of miscarriage.
PAM: Well...there's a slight risk, yes. But you ought to find out. I mean, it'll help you decide if you want to terminate.
CHERYL: Oh, Pam, I'm not sure that I could, even if...well. What would you do.
PAM: As a friend or nurse?
PAM: Well, I suppose what you've got to consider is, whats going to happen twenty years down the track if there is a problem?
CHERYL: When I'm no longer around, you mean?
PAM: Or, when you're too old to cope. I know that sounds harsh...
CHERYL: It doesn't. That's the difficulty, trying to think that far ahead. But then, on the other hand, there mightn't be any problem at all.
PAM: That's right.
Brett catches up with Danni.
BRETT: I want to talk to you.
DANNI: You don't have to break my arm.
BRETT: I'd rather break your neck, the way you spoke to mum about the baby!
DANNI: Well...maybe I went a bit too far.
BRETT: A bit?! Danni, you told her to get rid of it!
DANNI: Well, she's got the choice, and if it's not going to be perfect...
BRETT: Then she'll love it anyway! Just like she loves you! And you're not perfect, are you?
DANNI: Excuse me, diabetes isn't...
BRETT: Think about it, Danni.
Gaby drops by to see how Annalise and Mark's interviews went. Annalise seems to think that hers went well(!) Mark doesn't think his went well. But there's still the beauty section to come tonight and the charity is the main winner.
Danni comes in.
DANNI: Hi mum.
DANNI: Tidying up?
CHERYL: Well, someone's got to.
DANNI: I'm sorry for what I said about the baby. I didn't mean it. It was an awful thing to say.
CHERYL: Come here.
She hugs her.
DANNI: I just get so messed up sometimes.
CHERYL: I know.
DANNI: I didn't mean it, Mum. I didn't mean it.
CHERYL: I know.
DANNI: I feel so bad now. I don't know how you can bear it.
CHERYL: It's alright.
DANNI: I'm sorry.
CHERYL: It's alright!
Julie is passing judgement on the morality of the magazine delivery to the supplier. He says it's fine if she doesn't want to sell them, but she can't pick and choose - she either takes all the magazines or none. Before she can answer, he leaves, taking the magazines with him.
Mark and Annalise are getting ready for the beauty pageant - wearing facemasks, ironing their clothes and doing their hair. All to the accompaniment of a musical montage.
Finally, they draw together and take off their dressing gowns and admire each other's outfits.
Phil is confused that none of the magazines have come in. Julie tells him what happened with the "filthy sex magazines"
JULIE: I decided to take a moral stand.
PHIL:(exasperated) Julie, this is a business, not a decency league!
Phil rants at Julie and says she's going to send her broke. Julie think pepole will be pleased to shop in a non- sexist, non- violent newsagency!
Cheryl is talking to Lou, Brett and Danni around the kitchen table.
CHERYL: I just want to say that I have given this a lot of thought. It would be very difficult for the family if this baby was seriously disadvantaged.
CHERYL: Let me finish, Lou.
BRETT: Go on, mum.
CHERYL: If I were ten years younger, then maybe I'd think different about it. But I'm not, well, neither of us are, Lou. And I don't think that I could bring someone into the world knowing that eventually, someone else would have to care for it. And what if important to me...is what I have here right now, with all of you.
CHERYL: No, no, I know, I know, I don't, darling. But I've made my decision and I've decided to have the test. And if the results aren't good, then I'll do what I have to do. (To Lou, through tears) It's the right thing, and you know it is.
Lou kiss her hand.
CHERYL:(getting up) But...that's a big "if" and I don't want us to be moping around a feeling miserable. What I want is for us to go out to the Waterhole and see the end of the Quest.
They all heads off.
The pageant event is in full swing and is just starting when the Starks arrive.
A man introduces the finalists - there are six, including Mark and Annalise. He asks the candidates to tell the audience what they've done to raise money for the charity. Mark seems to go down very well with the crowd, while Annalise is a bit awkward. Mark is also the top fundraiser with $16,000.
The judges retire to confer.
Phil suggests that they establish a high shelf to put the sexy magazines on, out of the reach of children. She still thinks it's immoral, but Phil says people have a right to make their own choices. She finally agrees.
The man announces the winners. Mark has come third. Another girl called Maria comes second.
Annalise waits in expectation, but a girl called Soula has won. Annalise looks furious.
