Number 32 - Outside/Spa
Michael sits by the spa and watches as Julie's head slumps beneath the water. He smirks to himself and makes no attempt to save her. Suddenly, he hears footsteps and turning, he spies Rick and Debbie. He jumps up and yells for them to help him. Debbie and Rick sprint over and Rick jumps into the spa to lift Julie's head out of the water. Once Rick has saved Julie, Michael becomes more pro-active with his rescue efforts and lifts her out of the spa.
Julie's spluttering and swaying about in Michael's arms, but is alive. Debbie wraps her in a towel and has a go at Michael for not keeping a close enough eye on her. Michael retorts that he can't watch her every second, and she must have just fallen asleep. He reassures Julie and helps her inside. Debbie stands with Rick and is clearly upset.
DEBBIE: She could've drowned!
RICK: She's lucky we showed up when we did.
DEBBIE: But Michael was here. Why didn't he see what was happening?
Lassiter's Manager's Office
Annalise is annoyed at Phil catching her out. She tells him that she had to eat somehow, but he's having none of it - he wants the bill paid. Annalise puts her hand on his leg and suggests that they come to some other sort of arrangement. Phil is not impressed! He takes her hand off his leg and informs her that her mother will be seeing him in the morning and he strongly advises her to turn up as well so that they can come to a FINANCIAL arrangement!
PHIL: Oh, by the way - I've put your luggage under lock and key.
Annalise looks exasperated.
PHIL: You weren't thinking of going anywhere, were you?
Annalise shakes her head and walks out.
PHIL: (to himself) ...not now!
Number 24
Brad and Beth are both reading. Beth points out that interest rates on home loans have fallen. Brad is more excited about his magazine on surfing. Beth says that real estate prices are still as high as ever. Brad says that they should be talking about important things - like surfing! Brad suggests that he give her surfing lessons tomorrow but Beth's not up for it. Brad is concerned because he thought that married people were supposed to share interests, but Beth tells him that they are individuals and they can have their own hobbies - what's important is them spending the rest of their lives together. She tells him that she's going to make him so happy. She kisses him and leaves for Phoebe's.
Number 30
Beth shows them the engagement ring. Phoebe and Stephen are both really pleased. Beth compliments them on the decoration of Number 30. Stephen reckons that although it isn't cheap, now that he's manager of the record store, he'll be able to set his own hours and give himself lots of overtime. Beth reckons that this is what life is all about - having a home and raising a family.
Number 32
Julie looks completely out of it. She's messing her spoon around inside her bowl. Michael takes it from her and tells her to take her tablets. Debbie is fussing over Julie and makes her promise that she won't drive the car nor get into the spa. Rick and Helen both enter the kitchen. Rick, Debbie and Michael all leave for school.
Helen sits down with Julie and says that Debbie told her about the incident with the spa. She points out that because Phil has walked out and Hannah's at Number 26, Debbie and Michael are taking the strain of her being ill. Helen suggests that Julie go back to Dr Dawson but Julie is distressed because he just gives her pills. Helen tells her to fight the depression because if she doesn't, the family won't be able to look after her at home - and what happens to her then?
Beach
A woman rides across the beach on a horse - we don't know it yet, but it's Lauren Carpenter. Brad is emerging from the waves and Lauren circles the horse around him. They both look quite taken with each other.
Record Store
Stephen gives a collector a record - and he seems stoked. Stephen's boss, Tony, comes over and tells him that they're going to make the store into a chart store. He says that they'll get some great gifts from the record companies for being a chart store. He says that the rep from LTD. records - Luke Roberts - wants to see Stephen, because he charts the sales figures - and he'll want to get on Stephen's good side.
Beach
Brad and Lauren are chatting on the beach. They both agree that they wouldn't want jobs stuck in an office. Lauren reveals that she's a strapper - she's not good enough to be a jockey. She says her dad got her into it. Brad asks if he's a trainer, but she says he's just a punter! Brad asks if she surfs and she says she does. She reveals that she's from Queensland. She says she's in Erinsborough because the horse has been sent there. Brad thinks moving around must be a bind but she tells him that she likes meeting new people, seeing new places and doing different things. She gets back on her horse and rides off and Brad looks saddened.
Lassiter's Manager's Office
Fiona and Annalise are waiting for Phil. Annalise is in the same clothes she wore yesterday.
FIONA: You could at least take some pride in your appearance.
ANNALISE: Well, I don't have anything else. HE locked up all my clothes!
Phil walks in and gives Fiona the bill that Annalise has run up. Fiona says that she doesn't have the money. Phil says that he doesn't want to press charges. Annalise is outraged that Fiona won't pay, but Fiona tells Annalise that she has to take some responsbility - she dropped out of school against Fiona's wishes, threw away her apprenticeship and lied about breaking off with Lou Carpenter!
They continue to bicker and Phil intervenes. He suggests that Annalise work for Lassiter's until the bill is paid off and she can stay in staff quarters. Annalise is as pleased as punch and sidles up to Phil to "thank him". Fiona pulls her away and puts her foot down - Annalise is to go back to school. Phil suggests part time work outside of school hours instead. Fiona agrees.
Record Store
Luke is reeling off a list of incentives - he says that any singles that don't sell, he'll take them back instead of the store having to swallow the loss. He offers up concert tickets and big name appearances at the store. Stephen is stoked but Luke reveals the catch - they want Stephen to rig the charts. If an artist isn't moving up the charts as fast as they wish, they want him to fabricate the figures. Luke says that he knows Stephen is a family man, so he's got something in the car for him.
Coffee Shop
Beth is chatting to Cathy, asking her what it was like when she first got married. Cathy tells her it was hard but that they were really young. The conversation abruptly stops when Annalise walks in and sits at a table. Beth goes over to her.
BETH: I thought you'd left Erinsborough.
ANNALISE: You thought wrong.
Cathy sweeps over when Annalise picks up the menu.
ANNALISE: What's good today?
Cathy looks like she's about to throw Annalise out.
ANNALISE: Don't worry about being paid.
Behind Cathy, Fiona walks in and Annalise points at her.
ANNALISE: It's on Mum!
Cathy and Beth both back off.
On the table behind Annalise, Helen and Phil are chatting. Phil hopes that Julie will improve but Helen reckons that she's only getting worse - and on top of that, she seems to be giving up.
PHIL: There are times when I feel like giving up on her.
Helen is aghast but Phil reckons that they all might have to face up to the fact that Julie might need full time psychiatric care.
Number 30
Stephen walks in carrying a box behind his back - it's a food processor. Phoebe isn't too pleased - there are more important things that they need before an expensive food processor. Stephen says he didn't pay for it - it was a gift and it'll help when Hope gets onto solids. He tells her who he got it from and why. Phoebe tells him that the food processor is a bribe.
Coffee Shop
Rick bursts in - he got Wayne to mark his chemistry exam straight away to see if he got into the swimming carnival and it turns out that he got in the top 5. Cathy is pleased and reckons Benito will be proud. Rick guesses that the surprise will be driving lessons but Cathy tells him that her and Benito are going on holiday. Rick's marks were so poor, they thought they'd have to leave him behind but now he's improved, he can go too - to Italy! Rick is bummed out - he doesn't want to go!
Record Store
Luke has got some new singles for Stephen that he wants promoting. Stephen tries to put them with the regular singles but Luke isn't having any of it - he's got a special promotional stand but Stephen confronts him over the figures. Stephen says he isn't comfortable messing with them and offers him back the food processor. Luke tells him to keep it - and although he'll miss Stephen's help, he appreciates that everyone has to do what they think is right.
Coffee Shop
Annalise is sitting at a table. Michael sidles in and reminds Annalise that they have a date.
MICHAEL: I'll see you at 7.30.
ANNALISE: Oh, will you?
MICHAEL: And since you already have a hotel room, I reckon we should stay in. Why waste time?
ANNALISE: Rack off.
Michael warns her to be nice, else he'll tell his dad about her defrauding Lassiter's. Annalise reveals that Phil already knows.
ANNALISE: The only good thing about it is I don't have to put up with your crude attempts at blackmail!
Michael leaves, most annoyed! Rick approaches Annalise and congratulates her for getting rid of Michael. Annalise reckons her life is awful - she has to work at Lassiter's and go back to school. Rick is bummed because he has to go to Italy - Annalise doesn't seem to think that's as bad but Rick points out that he could be staying at home with his girl instead.
Number 32
The house is dimly lit and Julie is in her dressing gown, lying on the sofa. Debbie walks in and Julie tells her that she's been groggy all day. Julie doesn't understand what's wrong or how this has happened. She says she tries to think, but it feels as if her brain is soggy and full of wet cotton wool. Debbie gives Julie her tablets and asks if she's been taking them. Julie insists she has and Debbie suggests she might need different ones. Suddenly, Julie throws them all down the sink.
DEBBIE: What are you doing?!
JULIE: I was upset and angry before I started taking these but at least my mind was working!
Debbie protests but Julie says that she's had other people doing her thinking for long enough.
Number 24
Brad is on the sofa watching television. Beth lies down with him and Brad suggests that they go out and do something different. Beth tells him that she can barely keep her eyes open because she's been at work all day! Brad suggests that they should go horse-riding at the weekend. Beth isn't rapt by the idea and Brad's surprised - he thought she grew up on a farm. Beth tells him that they rode trail bikes. Brad thinks they should rent trail bikes and go into the bush and camp out. Beth says that it'll be hot and dusty and she gets enough of that on the building site - she wants to stay at home, laze around and swim in the pool.
BRAD: Don't you ever want to do something exciting?
BETH: Like what?
BRAD: I don't know. Go somewhere you've never been before. Do something you've never done. Meet new people!
Beth says she's met the most important person in the world and she's exactly where she wants to be. The pair kiss.
Record Shop
Tony is furious that Stephen has given Luke short shrift over chart rigging. Stephen insists it's a scam but Tony tells him that's how it works. Stephen says that the charts should represent what the public listen to, not what the record companies dictate. Tony tells him to get back onside with Luke. Stephen is furious - he thought he was being paid to run the store. Tony tells him that if he likes running the store, he should save his sermons for Sundays and get on with his job. Stephen says he can't do it.
TONY: Then find yourself another job - you're through here!
