No. 32
Rick is in the kitchen, telling Debbie that it's about time she had some fun. Debbie asks how he's going to get the day off school. Rick takes a bottle of his mum's minestrone soup out of his bag and says he's going to use that!
No. 30
Phoebe and Beth sit down on the floor in the lounge room and Beth asks Phoebe when she and Stephen are going to buy some more furniture. Phoebe sighs that they've been window- shopping, but everything's so expensive; but Stephen had this brilliant idea of borrowing some stuff from his parents - they're going to be away on tour for months. Brad comes in as Stephen arrives home and beams that he has a van- load of furniture outside. Phoebe asks what it's like. Stephen muses:
STEPHEN: It's, um... it's different!
Coffee Shop
Cathy is setting up for the day as Benito sips a coffee by the counter, when Rick comes in, looking unwell. He tells his parents that he was on his way to school but started to feel really rotten, so he was hoping he could grab a glass of water. He heads into the kitchen where he pours the minestrone soup around the sink, grabs some grated cheese which he piles on top of it, and then makes loud retching sounds! Benito and Cathy come running in and Cathy asks in concern what brought *this* on. She suggests that Rick see a doctor. Rick, however, says he'll be right; he just needs to lie down for a while. Cathy says she'll ring the school and tell them he's ill.
Outside a large house
Sometime later, Debbie and Rick - now wearing non- school clothes: Rick in 'rapper' gear and Debbie in a Little Black Dress - walk up to a large house, Rick saying the limo will be there soon. Debbie sighs that they'll never get away with this. Rick, however, assures her that they will. At that moment, Rick spots the limo approaching and Debbie runs to hide. The limo pulls up, Rick looks in through the driver's window and the chauffeur says he's there to pick up Mr. Gregory. Rick nods that that's him. The chauffeur stares at him and Rick adds quickly that you don't have to be old to be rich. The chauffeur accepts this. At that moment, Debbie walks round the corner of the house and joins them. Rick tells the chauffeur to take them to the Elliott Park Film Studios. As she climbs into the back seat, Debbie says to Rick:
DEBBIE: I hope we get to see Dr. Zoom.
RICK: Course we will! I, er, told my secretary to arrange it!
With that, the chauffeur starts the car and drives off.
No. 30
Brad and Stephen are carrying a brightly- coloured cupboard into the lounge room, Stephen saying he's not sure how Phoebe will feel about it. Brad asks him how he managed to get the day off work and Stephen explains that things are pretty quiet at the record store at the moment; the stock's so conservative that the place is stagnating. He adds that if someone was to open a store in the area that sold what the kids wanted, his boss would be left for dead; he just wishes he could do it himself. Brad sighs that *he's* not too rapt about his job at the Waterhole. Stephen grins:
STEPHEN: Hey! How do you feel about being partners in a music store?
BRAD: Yeah! Cool! Yeah, I could handle that!
STEPHEN: Well, maybe we could do it!
Back of the limousine
Debbie beams at Rick that the limo is more like a hotel room than a limo! Rick hands her a canned drink - and then spots a dead fly on a shelf, which he wraps up in a tissue and puts in his pocket, saying it might come in handy! He then grins that the two of them are going to be among the first people to see Dr. Zoom. Debbie nods that it's really weird: imagine having a song at the top of the charts and no one knows what you look like!
TV Studio
A TV producer is giving directions, and yelling to someone across the studio to cut the music. He then tells a group of kids - including Rick and Debbie - gathered in the studio that he's got some bad news: Dr. Zoom is unable to appear personally today. The kids groan. The producer goes on, though, that they still want to film what they can of the video clip and need the kids to be in it; they'll get someone to mime the song and get the kids to react. He then picks Rick to stand in for Dr. Zoom! Rick heads up onto the stage and the producer says:
PRODUCER: Now, er, do you reckon you can act like a rock star and whip thousands of girls into a frenzy of adoration?!
The kids titter! Rick then tells the producer that he doesn't know the song. The producer lets out a big sigh and says pointedly:
PRODUCER: Just. Mime.
TV Studio
Sometime later, Rick is miming and cavorting around on stage as Debbie and the other kids at the studio dance along! All of a sudden, a TV crew walks in and starts filming what's going on. As the song ends, they quickly disappear again. The producer tells everyone they can see the video clip on telly in a couple of weeks' time. He then tells Rick and Debbie that they'd better slip out the back.
As they head out, the producer tells Rick that he really got the kids in. Rick then tells Debbie that he's really worked up an appetite; how about they go to the Westminster for lunch? Debbie exclaims that that must be the most expensive restaurant in the whole country! Rick assures her that money's no problem!
No. 30
Stephen and Brad are washing down walls, preparing to paint them, and Stephen asks Brad not to say anything to Phoebe yet, until they know if it's possible. Neither of them is aware of Phoebe coming into the house quietly through the front door and overhearing Stephen saying to Brad that you've got to have real commitment; it's a big step and not just the sort of thing you can get away from. Brad nods that he knows that and he won't; he's ready to settle down. A grin crosses Phoebe's face as she walks into the lounge room and asks what they're talking about. They tell her quickly that it was nothing! Stephen then asks her if she got everything. Phoebe nods that she thinks so. She then looks at the furniture and exclaims that it's brilliant! Stephen looks relieved.
Westminster restaurant/Back of the limousine
Rick walks into the Westminster restaurant and tells the maitre'd that he has a booking for two in the name of Roland Gregory. The maitre'd looks in his reservations book and says he can't see that name; there must be some mistake. At that moment, the 'phone rings and the maitre'd asks Rick to excuse him. He picks up and Debbie comes on on the mobile 'phone in the limo and asks the maitre'd to inform Mr. Gregory that his private jet will be ready to leave at 3pm and she's adjusted his meeting accordingly. The maitre'd looks at Rick in surprise. In the car, Debbie hangs up. The chauffeur grins at her:
CHAUFFEUR: You two are unreal!
Debbie then climbs out of the car and walks into the restaurant, where Rick is just being seated. The maitre'd hands the two of them menus. Debbie opens one and then gasps at the prices. Rick, however, tells her:
RICK: Order whatever you like. It's on me.
Coffee Shop
Beth is sitting at a table with Phoebe and she exclaims:
BETH: Come on, Phoebe, you can't say Brad's got a surprise and then just leave it at that!
PHOEBE: But he'd *kill* me if I let on - not that he knows that I know!
BETH: There you go, then - so spill it before the suspense kills me.
PHOEBE: Beth, I can't. It's something you should hear from *him*.
BETH: But I could be waiting *years*! You *know* how long he takes to get around to things.
PHOEBE (grins): Not with this!
BETH: Look, if you tell me now, I swear I'll act surprised when he springs it on me.
PHOEBE (gives in): Oh... OK! I think he's going to propose!
BETH (blankly): Propose what?
PHOEBE: Marriage! What else, you idiot?!
Beth sits there looking astonished, saying she can't believe it. Phoebe tells her that when a guy starts using words like 'commitment' and 'settle down', he has to be serious. Beth comments that Brad's never said *anything* to her; not so much as a *hint*. Phoebe beams that he's *about* to!
No. 30
As he wipes paint off his hands, Brad says to Stephen that finding somebody to put up the dollars to back them is going to be the hard part. Stephen sighs that the *banks* aren't going to lend it to them. He puts on the TV just as the reporter announces that today they have a real exclusive: their news crew caught a glimpse of the famous recluse, Dr. Zoom, recording a pop promo for his hit single; this is the first time Dr. Zoom has been seen by his fans. Rick comes up on screen, dancing around on the stage, and Brad and Stephen stare at him!
Westminster restaurant
Debbie finishes her meal and smiles at Rick that that was great: she's never eaten a whole lobster before! She then asks in concern how they're going to *pay* for all this. Rick reaches into his pocket, takes out the tissue he put in there earlier, and tells Debbie to wait until she sees the maitre'd's face when he confronts him about the fly in their meal! At that moment, the maitre'd walks over and says:
MAITRE D: I'm afraid, Mr. Gregory, your disguise has been blown.
Rick's face drops. The maitre d then goes on:
MAITRE D: My daughter is your biggest fan. Could I possibly have an autograph, please, Dr. Zoom?
Looking relieved, Rick signs a pad as the maitre'd goes on that he'll be very discreet - and of course, the meal is on the house. He then reminds Rick of the time - he has to catch his private jet!
Outside the Westminster restaurant/Inside the limousine
As they emerge from the restaurant, Debbie asks Rick how on earth they got the idea he's Dr. Zoom. The limo pulls up and Debbie and Rick go to climb in. All of a sudden, the car is surrounded by a horde of screaming girls, yelling for Dr. Zoom! As the limo pulls away, Rick beams at Debbie:
RICK: They really love me, don't they!
Waterhole
Brad pours Wayne a beer and asks if it was a tough day at school. Wayne sighs that it always *is*; he can't remember working that hard to give *his* teachers a tough time - but he probably did! He then adds that it's a bit more relaxed in the pub now that Gaby's gone. A man walks over suddenly and asks Brad or Wayne if either of them is interested in some nice jewellery - strictly legit. He explains that he had his own business in Anson's Corner, but they put up the rent so high he couldn't afford to renew the lease, so until he can, he's peddling his stuff wherever he can. Wayne looks at a selection of rings but says he doesn't have anyone he can buy one for at the moment. He then looks at Brad and suggests he could buy something for Beth. The hawker suggests to Brad that he buy his girl a friendship ring so she knows he loves him. Brad says he's only got $50 on him - and it's got to see him through the rest of the week. The hawker assures him he'll get by! He then picks out a ring from the tray, holds it up and says:
HAWKER: Look at this one. Worth $120 - but I'll give it to you for 50 bucks as a special favour to a man in a desperate position.
BRAD: Yeah, well, I'm not *that* desperate.
HAWKER: You *should* be. Your girlfriend must reckon you don't give two hoots about her. Well, she's probably thinking about moving on.
BRAD (exclaims): Beth? No way!
HAWKER: Well, you can make sure by forking out 50 bucks. You *do* want to make her happy, don't you?
BRAD: Yeah, course.
HAWKER: There you are, then.
BRAD (muses): Yeah, well, I suppose Beth *would* like a friendship ring...
The bottom end of Ramsay Street
Rick and Debbie climb out of the car, both now wearing their school uniform. Rick thanks the chauffeur for saving them from the clutches of his adoring fans! The chauffeur asks if they wouldn't be rather dropped at their own home. Rick, however, insists that this will be fine - they'd rather walk a little. The driver then hands them a bag and suggests they might want it. Debbie takes it from him and looks inside. As she and Rick then turn to walk up Ramsay Street, they bump into Wayne - who frowns at them and suggests coolly that he thinks they'd better come over to his place and explain themselves...
No. 26
A short time later, as they head into No. 26, Wayne comments to Rick that he's obviously not ill, so what have they been up to today? Rick insists that he *was* sick - he's been throwing up all this morning; Wayne can ask his mum if he doesn't believe him. Wayne asks tersely if his mum knows what a remarkable recovery he's made. He then presses:
WAYNE: So where have you been?
DEBBIE: Er... we had to go to the shops to get something.
WAYNE: And what was so urgent that you had to take the entire day off?
DEBBIE (holding up the bag): Pills and stuff.
Wayne asks if he can take a look. Debbie hands over the bag as Rick stares at it in concern. All Wayne finds inside, though, are aspirin and antacid. Wayne smiles that *they'd* help - if Rick was really sick. Rick says:
RICK: I *was* - so if you don't mind, I'd like to go home to bed; see if I can shake this bug off so I don't miss any *more* school.
WAYNE (snaps): Cut the bull, Rick. Where have you two been today?
RICK (sighs): OK. We've been riding around in a limousine, shooting a video for Dr. Zoom, munching at the Westminster restaurant and being chased by thousands of screaming fans!
WAYNE (growls): I want the *truth*.
Rick and Debbie just laugh. Wayne asks what right they had to take the day off while the other kids keep slogging. Rick says quietly:
RICK: The thing is, our friend, Terry, died in England.
WAYNE: I'm sorry to hear that. I can't see *that's* got anything to do with it.
RICK: Yeah. Debbie's been really worried about her mum and I just wanted to cheer her up, that's all; give her a day she wouldn't forget.
Wayne hesitates before saying:
WAYNE: All right. I won't tell your parents and I won't do anything about this *if* you promise me one thing.
RICK: What's that?
WAYNE: That you'll never wag school again.
RICK (cheekily): Well, how about if I promise never to wag any of *your* classes again?!
With that, Wayne shoos the kids out!
No. 24
Beth opens the door to Brad, who tells her that he wanted to see her about something. A broad grin crosses Beth's face. The two of them go and sit down and Brad goes on:
BRAD: We've been going out for a while now.
BETH: Yeah....
BRAD: And, er, well, I'm not very good at saying things. I never really let you know how I feel - so I'm hoping this will say it for me.
He holds out a small case containing the friendship ring. Beth opens it and exclaims that it's beautiful! She then beams happily:
BETH: The answer's yes.
BRAD (blankly): Yes what?
BETH (laughs): Yes, I'll marry you, of course!
She throws her arms around Brad in delight!
