Nick helps Lucy out of the water and has a go at Sharon for pushing her in. He thinks she's jealous and doesn't know why he bothered going out with her. Edith comes out of the coffee shop and is horrified.
Edith drags Sharon into the kitchen and asks if she really pushed Lucy in the pool. Sharon says it's Nick's fault for trying to make her jealous with Lucy. Now he will never want to see her again. Sharon starts crying and Edith comforts her. Sharon doesn't feel like working any more and Edith tells her to go home and cheer up.
Joe finishes talking to Jane on the phone and tells Toby it's just the two of them for tea as Jane is going out with Mark. Toby is unresponsive and Joe asks him what's wrong. Toby is worrying about going to rehearse Sleeping Beauty with Katie for the school play as he has to kiss her. Joe says he might even like it and sends him on his way!
Madge is just about to leave to see Helen at the hospital when Edith arrives. Edith would like to help out with Helen as she thinks neighbours should help each other out in a crisis. Madge realises she is driving at something else and Edith tells her that Harold's servings at the coffee shop are very stingy. She asks Madge if she can influence Harold to make him more reasonable. Madge says Harold has to make a profit and they don't interfere in each other's jobs.
Nick is helping Katie rehearse for Sleeping Beauty and she tells him he's much better than Toby. Lucy appears and asks Nick if he wants to finish his sketch now. Nick goes to get his stuff and Katie asks Lucy why Sharon pushed her in the pool. Lucy says she doesn't think Sharon likes the thought of her going out with Nick.
KATIE: You mean you two are going out?
LUCY: Well he hasn't asked me yet, so don't say anything... but he will!
Madge is at comatose Helen's bedside, sewing Katie's dress for the play. She tells Helen about the arousal therapy and gets tearful. A nurse comes in and Madge asks her if arousal therapy really works. The nurse says she has heard of cases where it has had results. She leaves Madge to it.
MADGE: Leave me to what? I'm just about all talked out. Hard to believe isn't it? Madge Bishop struggling to find something to say to you of all people.
Nick is sitting on the kitchen counter sketching Lucy. He wants to finish soon to go and see Helen. Lucy asks if she can come with him but he thinks she should stay to keep an eye on Katie and Toby. Lucy raises the subject of Sharon. Nick says Sharon never cared how he felt about things like the nude modelling and painting over his mural. Lucy says he deserves a girlfriend who would support him and do things like this modelling! It looks like Nick has finally realised how Lucy feels about him.
Edith is making meatloaf when Sharon comes home with a present for her... a new cat! Edith says she didn't want another cat but can't help looking a little pleased. Sharon says if she hadn't taken him from the shelter he would have been put down. She says she had been thinking about getting her a new cat since she realised how much she missed Cassius. Edith says he can stay for a few days on a trial basis... and promptly names him Arthur after her grandfather (who loved her meatloaf)!
Katie is bossing Toby around as he rather unenthusiastically rehearses the play. Toby refuses to kiss her and Katie tells him not to be such a child. Madge arrives with the costume and asks how it's going. Toby says he's not kissing! Madge sits down to help them rehearse.
Number 30 back yard
Edith is showing Arthur the garden and is clearly in love with him already. Bouncer starts barking next- door. Edith calls over the fence and asks Joe to get Bouncer to stop barking as it's terrorizing her cat! Joe tells her she'll just have to keep the cat inside. Edith says that's not fair and asks him to chain Bouncer up.
JOE: No way, this is Bouncer's yard. Chain up your cat!
EDITH: Oh don't be absurd! Mine is a reasonable request.
JOE: So's mine. Besides, Bouncer was here first. First in, best dressed.
EDITH: That dog's barking is noise pollution.
JOE: So's your gasbagging!
EDITH: Well, really! I'll have the authorities onto him.
JOE: I wouldn't if I was you. Go on Bouncer, sick her! Kill! Kill! No, not the broom you fool, her... the blimp next- door!
Nick is telling Helen his drawing and painting is getting much better, although he's not nearly as good as her. He tells her about Sharon turning up as the model at the life drawing class.
NICK: Oh, Jim's cousin Hilary was here for a while. She came in to see you but I don't know if you remember that or not. I think you're lucky if you don't!
Nick tells Helen Lucy is home for the holidays and he played up to her to make Sharon jealous but now she's got the hots for him! What is he going to do?
EDITH: Blimp! Gasbag! I've never been so insulted in all my days by that... that...
SHARON: Oh, don't let him get at you.
EDITH: Get at me? The rudest man God ever created walking the earth, and here we are stuck next- door to him!
Edith says she will follow through with her threat to go to the council if that dog starts barking again. Sharon tells her not to start a feud but Edith has got a bee in her bonnet and is not going to let a man get the better of her. All men are rude and selfish... except for her sainted late husband! She tells Sharon to forget about Nick Page and get on with her life. All men are insignificant ants, and if they get in her way she should squash them!
Nick closes the door on his way out of Helen's room as Lucy arrives, since Jim and Beverly are now home. Nick asks Lucy if they can talk. He says he's not ready for a girlfriend after breaking up with Sharon. Lucy says it's no big deal but Nick leaves and she looks very disappointed.
Joe is having a beer and moaning to Bouncer about Edith. He makes barking noises and tells Bouncer they can bark as much as they want to! Toby comes home with a black eye but doesn't want to tell Joe who did it. Katie suddenly bursts in.
KATIE: Toby Mangel, you come here and kiss me or I'll sock you in the other eye!
