Ramsays
Madge tries to tell Harold that maybe it was just a joke. Harold says it's no joke - someone is determined to ruin his reputation and he's determined to hunt them down and sue for defamation of character. And also make them take it all back in front of the church's entire congregation! Madge looks mortified!
Clarkes
Eileen is telling Jamie in a soft voice that his other granny may have money, but Eileen loves him the best! Des is trying to get Daphne to bury the hatchet with her father and let him see Jamie. Daphne doesn't want to and Eileen agrees - he treated Daphne abominably.
Mike comes in and says he saw Harold in the Coffee Shop going beserk and muttering about defamatory gossip. Eileen looks worried! Daphne says it must have been Mrs Mangel.
Mrs Mangel's
Harold is ranting to Mrs Mangel and Jane about the gossip, telling them that there's no truth in the rumours, but he'll move out as soon as possible. Jane tells him that there's no need to move out and they won't worry about gossip that they know is lies. Harold is very appreciative and vows to find out who is responsible for the gossip. He has got a migraine coming on, so goes to lie down.
Harold wonders if Eileen has heard the rumours - she's been behaving strangely lately. But then he says that Eileen would never believe anything like that(!)
When Harold has gone, Mrs Mangel tells Jane that Eileen has got the wrong idea from her tealeaf reading. Jane is horrified and wants to know what she told Eileen. Mrs Mangel admits that she told Eileen she'd seen the half-man, half-beast in the tealeaves. Jane despairs.
Ramsays
Henry, Charlene and Scott are trying not to laugh while Madge tells them about the gossip. Charlene thinks that maybe Madge should go down the church and explain what's happened. Madge says that Eileen should do it - she started it. She says she did egg Eileen on a bit, but if she asks stupid questions she should expect stupid answers(!)
Scott thinks it's a great image for any man to have - Madge might have done Harold a good turn(!) Henry, Charlene and Scott laugh their heads off, and Madge is not pleased!
Mrs Mangel's
Harold is off his food - he's had a terrible night with his migraine too. Mrs Mangel tells Harold that the gossip will blow over.
HAROLD: No. I will not rest until the culprit has been run out of town.
MRS MANGEL: Oh dear.
Car workshop
Rob is on time for work for once. Harold brings his car in - he's booked a service: he needs new brake linings. Harold says that Whatever else Rob might be, he is a good mechanic. Rob taunts Harold saying he's heard rumours about him down at the pub. Harold is very angry and says he'd better not find out that Rob is behind the rumours or he'll beat him to within an inch of his life. Rob says that Harold is more a lover than a fighter(!), which doesn' go down well at all! Charlene has to separate them(!)
When Harold has gone, Charlene berates Rob for teasing Harold. Rob laughs his head off saying he's enjoying the rumours.
Coffee Shop
Beverly calls in to see Des. He tells her that Daphne is OK, but needs Beverly's opinion as a doctor. Daphne's mother has told him that her father is terminally ill, and it's up to Des whether to tell Daphne or not. Beverly says she's no psychiatrist (really?!!) but she thinks Daphne should be told. Daphne needs to have the chance to reconcile with her father.
Harold comes in. He goes straight into the kitchen.
Des tells Beverly that he will tell Daphne - they've never had any secrets before.
Harold opens the hatch of the kitchen in great paranoia.
HAROLD: Are you people talking about me?
DES: Sorry? Of course we're not talking about you.
HAROLD: Oh. Well don't!
He shuts the hatch.
The Waterhole
Mrs Mangel comes in. She wants to talk to Madge confidentially about Harold.
HENRY: If it's about those rumours...
MADGE: Henry, get out.
HENRY: But I've got work to do...
MADGE: Out!
When Henry has gone, Madge thinks Mrs Mangel is running scared, because her tea leaves started all this nonsense. Madge admits she joked with Eileen, but Harold is really a gentleman. Mrs Mangel says that all three of them - she, Madge, Eileen must be discreet. Madge looks at her and says that translated that means that Mrs Mangel wants a pact that none of them will tell on one another(!) Madge says they may not be able to depend on Eileen to keep her big trap shut, but it's fine with her.
Car Workshop
A bloke called Mr Griffiths offers Rob an old mini for parts. He doesn't want it, but Charlene does. The price is $20.
The Office
Jane is still not chuffed with Mrs Mangel over the Harold affair. She says she's going to tell Harold how the rumours started. Mrs Mangel warns her not to, because Harold will walk out, and without his rent money, she won't be able to keep a roof over their heads(!) She makes Jane promise at least not to say anything until this evening.
Car Workshop
Charlene rings Jane and asks her to meet up with her at lunchtime - she'll get Mike and Scott as well. She's got a new car!
A street
Charlene and Scott skateboard up to the car. She tells Scott that she bought the car for $20. He is surprised. Charlene says she's going to strip the car and rebuild it. Scott opens the driver's door and the door comes off in his hand(!)
Clarkes
Des has come home to see Daphne. He sits her down at the table. He tells her that he knows she doesn't like secrets, but he has to tell her what his mother told him.
DES: It's about your Dad. He's ill.
DAPHNE: So? He's ill.
DES: He's terminally ill, Daph.
(long pause)
DAPHNE: Are you sure?
DES: Yep.
Daphne says that her mother should have told her herself. Daphne doesn't know what to think. Des thinks Daphne should see her father. He's got a lot to forgive his own old man for, but if he was sick, he'd see him.
DAPHNE: That might just be the difference between you and me, Des.
A street
Jane, Henry and Mike have arrived to have a look at the car. They are going to tow it back to the workshop. Scott, Charlene, Mike and Jane get into the mini while Henry prepares to tow with his car. As he drives away, the front of the car comes away, leaving the mini at a standstill!
Car workshop
Rob's jaw drops as the guys push the mini into the car yard. Rob says Charlene is mad to pay $20 for the car - it's not worth 20 cents! Scott and Charlene say they'll do it up in their spare time. Rob agrees that she can keep it in the shed at the garage.
Charlene says she's thought of the perfect name - Willie. "Willie ever go again or won't he?"
Coffee Shop
Eileen is shaking nervously behind the counter, trying not to talk to Harold. Mrs Mangel comes in, but leaves quickly when Harold glowers at her.
Eileen asks Beverly if she thinks Harold is behaving strangely. Beverly says Harold has a lot on his mind.
Harold comes over.
HAROLD: Why did you do it, Eileen? Why did you spread those vicious rumours about me.
Eileen says she doesn't know what he's talking about. Harold won't have any of this and says he's heard from others where the gossip originated.
EILEEN: No! I was only telling them what Mrs Mangel saw in the tea leaves!
HAROLD: Mrs Mangel?
Eileen starts to explain, but just then Madge came in. Harold tells her that Eileen spread gossip because of what was seen in Mrs Mangel's tea leaves.
MADGE: Oh! I can explain that, see, it was all a big misunderstanding.
HAROLD: Misunderstanding?
Eileen sneaks out from behind the counter and goes to stand with Madge.
EILEEN: But you're the one who told me it was true!
MADGE:(through clenched teeth) It was a joke.
Harold is appalled to hear that Madge was involved. Eileen explains the whole story.
EILEEN: Well, Nell Mangel saw what she saw in the tea leaves and then I asked Madge...if it was true.
HAROLD:(dangerously) If what were true?
EILEEN: That you were...uncontrollable with women.
Madge puts her head in her hands.
HAROLD: And?
EILEEN: She said it was.
