Recap
Harold and Madge get friendly after he mistakenly eats ham pasta but their union is ruined by Charlene who insists Harold do something about Eileen. Lucy worries about her upcoming operation.
At the coffee shop:
Eileen is trying to force her curry upon the customers, even though all Amanda wants is a cup of tea. They discuss Nell coming home from hospital, Amanda isn't looking forward to it as she doesn't know if she can cope. She smiles a very sharkish smile as she mentions that she'd heard Eileen does volunteer work...
Outside:
Charlene is still ranting about Eileen. Harold tries to calm her and Charlene accuses him of being scared of a little old lady. All fired up, Harold goes inside to prove he's a man and can do the hiring and firing.
Inside:
Charlene goes through to the kitchen, leaving Harold to talk to Eileen. Before he can say anything she tells him she won't be held back, she is determined to hand in her notice so she can go and look after Mrs Mangel. Delighted, Harold checks he has heard her right and assures her she must do what is right - one's loyalty to one's friends must be put first. He quietly strolls into the kitchen where Charlene assumes he chickened out. When he calmly tells her Eileen is packing up her things she jumps in the air with joy!
At the hospital:
Things are much less joyful as everyone waits for Lucy's op to begin. Mrs Mangel wanders up and tells them she'll be thinking of Lucy, then asks if she can see her before the operation. Jim is a little shocked but agrees when she points out she's just been through the same sort of thing.
In Lucy's room:
Lucy gets a lovely needle and cries about having her hair shaved off. Mrs Mangel walks in and scolds her for her tears, telling her she's been sick too and doesn't sit around crying - "and if an old biddy like me can do it, what have you got to cry about?" Lucy is shocked out of her tears. Mrs Mangel tells her she is expecting her over at her place once she's better for afternoon tea.
4 hours later:
Jim is taking his frustration at the wait out on everyone around him. Scott is miles away and Charlene makes him feel much better by reflecting that one day they could be sitting out there waiting for news about one of their own kids (and they will! Albeit in a warmer hospital). Bev and the doctor come up and tell them that so far things have gone to plan, but they don't know if there's been any brain damage yet. It'll also be a few days before they know if the tumour was benign. Jim is even more frustrated.
At the coffee shop:
Mike comes into work as Jane arrives to pick up a couple of pieces of quiche. He tells her he's just dropped off the finished video to Gail and tells her she could have fronted the video if she didn't look so daggy .She is upset and tells him to keep his lousy opinions to himself.
At the hospital:
Visitors are being kicked out but Scott doesn't want to leave. Helen tells him Lucy won't be allowed to see him even if she wakes up and they drag him off home, leaving Jim behind to worry alone. He goes into a little dream sequence remembering Lucy's party when no-one attended. He is brought back to earth by Beverly, who tells him Lucy can't move the right hand side of her body.
In Lucy's room:
Lucy wakes up, with Jim sitting next to her bed. She moans and says "My arm." He comforts her by saying it's just the operation.
At Mrs Mangel's:
Jane is preparing to move back into her room with Amanda. She warns her that Mrs Mangel won't be happy to have all that money in the house and Amanda says she'll have a word with Des. Harold comes home and asks why Jane isn't at her business administration course- she didn't feel like it. She doesn't want any more smart remarks about the way she looks and tells him it's none of his business either.
At the hospital:
Beverly is dozing in a chair when Jim wakes her up. He tells her Lucy is asleep and she says he should go home. He doesn't want to because it's worse at home. She thinks it might be a good idea for him to go back to her place, neither of them want to be alone.
At the Robinsons:
Scott visits Helen and reminds her about a picnic they went on 7 years ago when they decided to climb a mountain. When they thought they'd got to the top they realised there was still a lot of mountain to climb. He likens this to the situation with Lucy now and how they still don't know if she'll be okay. He's already finding it hard to cope with the waiting.
At the hospital:
Jim worries that Lucy hasn't woken up that morning but Beverly assures him she'll be groggy for days. He thanks her for all the support she's given them and thinks they should talk about last night. She doesn't want to - she doesn't think either of them are capable of knowing how they feel about anything right now.
Outside Mrs Mangel's:
Eileen has come round with a nice woolly blanket for Mrs Mangel but Jane doesn't have time to stop. She runs into Mike but won't stop to talk to him. He walks after her trying to apologise, but then argues and says she's only dressing like this to please her mother. She shouts that he only cares about how people look - he wouldn't have given her a second glance before she started dressing better. Angry, she storms off down the street.
At Mrs Mangel's:
Eileen is giving Amanda tips on looking after Nell and telling her she might cope better than she thinks. As she is leaving Mike comes in. He goes through to the living room and shouts at Amanda that she is ruining Jane's life - because she is jealous.
