Madge is still cross with Charlene - now she's cross about about Charlene being late for work. She says she knows Charlene has been flathunting.
Scott comes in looking terrible - he tells them that someone has stolen his car. Scott tells them what's happened - when he went to get the service book for the man, he drove off. He has told the police and they said this sort of thing happens all the time. But Scott is upset that it always happens to them. Madge's anger has cooled and she is sympathetic. To add insult to injury, Scott's jacket with Paul's loan money in the pocket was on the back seat. Charlene says they've got nothing left now, but at least they've still got each other.
Madge says at least one thing has come for it - they'll have to delay leaving home.
Scott and Charlene are telling Des and Daphne what happened with the car and the money in the jacket and they are very sympathetic. Scott and Charlene asks if they'll rent their spare room to them. But Des and Daphne say they've started getting the room ready as a nursery. Also Des is firm - he doesn't want to take sides against their families. Daphne suggests going home and talking to their families about it first.
Helen tells Scott that she's going to have a quiet chat with Madge to try to settle things. Scott starts to cry and tells Helen that nothing goes right anymore. He can't understand why Jim wont support him and Charlene. Helen hugs him.
Charlene is morose and moping around. Madge tells her to buck up - Harold is coming around for dinner. Henry says that the planned meeting is all wrong - Charlene and Scott should be there, it's all about civil liberties! Madge shouts at him that she's had a run of bad luck herself between the divorce, losing the diamond out of the ring, him being in jail and Charlene's antics. She tells Henry to get lost before she adds murder to the list(!)
Henry answers the door to Harold while Charlene continues to mope. Suddenly she bites into something and finds Madge's diamond!
Charlene comes to see Scott - she shows him the diamond she's found in the trifle. Charlene says they could sell the diamond to make up their debts, but Scott won't hear of it - it's stealing.
Helen, Harold and Madge are sitting down to dinner. Before he leaves, Henry asks to give his opinion. He gives a rather touching speech. He says that Scott and Charlene love each other and they know that they mean it. He'd be the first to object if Charlene was getting involved with the wrong guy - but Scott is the right guy. They're not kids anymore, they're people with real feelings and he hopes that they'll remember that.
When Henry has gone, Helen says that maybe Henry should have stayed. But Harold says they mustn't overlook the living in sin factor. Helen says they aren't discussing the fabric of society and Madge tells Harold to shut up.
Des and Daphne are practising childbirth techniques, however Des is doing the breathing exercises(!) Daphne tells him to resist the urge to push(!) and suggests gas or an epidural. Des nearly faints at this but Daphne manhandles him back on to the sofa(!) They tell each other how happy they are and hope that things go well with Scott and Charlene.
Charlene says that honesty hasn't got them anywhere so far, but Scott says it's stealing from her own mother. Charlene says she only wants to pawn it for now. But Scott says they can't live with the guilty consciences. Charlene agrees - she'll give the diamond back to Madge.
Helen has just made her suggestion about Scott and Charlene living at the Ramsay house. Madge is appalled, but Helen says it's the only way - they could keep an eye on them and help them. Harold is adamant that the answer is no, but Madge is less sure. Madge tells Harold that she has to consider Harold's opinions since they are engaged.
Charlene comes in and Harold is there alone. She says she's heard about the scheme from Helen. Harold says they should wait until she and Scott are old enough to get married. Charlene sighs and changes the subject, showing Harold the diamond that she found in the trifle. Harold is delighted and asks Charlene not to tell Madge - he wants to get it put back in the ring as a surprise.
Ramsays, the following morning
Henry comes out with a mask on and scared Madge. Madge tells Henry that she had to go along with Harold's views the night before but she's worried because Charlene looks so unhappy. But if she gives in, she might lose Harold. Henry says that she must have her own opinion on this subject - it's too important. Madge says she'll have another think before she sees Harold at lunchtime.
The Coffee Shop
Harold is buying lunch and confides in Daphne that he's had the diamond put back in Madge's ring. He's relieved - the diamond is worth almost $3000.
Harold and Madge meet and Harold gives her the ring. Madge says you wouldn't know that the stone was glass. Harold smirks quietly. Then Madge tells Harold that she's decided that Scott and Charlene can live with her. Harold all but accuses Madge of being an unfit mother. Madge takes great offence to this and then asks what Harold is going to do about it. Harold says he'll consider his position. Madge says she'll make it easy - he can take his ring and jump in the lake. With this, she throws the ring into the lake and stalks off. Harold goes into the lake after the ring(!)
