Des and Daphne's father, Allan, have a drink at the Waterhole. Des invites him around to dinner tonight.
Mrs Mangel comes to see Paul about the roster. She tells Paul again about how grateful she is to have her job back after the way she behaved. She also thanks Helen for persuading Jane to come home. She says she'll be happy to sit for the portrait if Helen wants to finish it. She offers to come around tonight and Helen is pleased.
Henry is on another ice- cream job, dressed in a top hat and tails. Jane comes along and he offers her an icecream. He flirts with her a bit and says that anyone who accepts a Walnut Whirt from a guy is practically engaged to him! Henry asks her out, but Jane says no.
Coffee Shop (Outside)
Harold and Madge are having lunch. Harold has got an appointment with Paul to sort out his "business affairs". He also wants to take Madge shopping for a ring, but Madge is working today. Harold is a bit disappointed but says he'll buy something suitable on his own. Madge warns him not to go overboard.
Daphne comes out and Madge casually tells her that she's met her father. Daphne is shocked, and even more shocked when she hears Des has had a drink with him. She storms off, leaving Mike in charge.
Daphne storms into Des's office unannounced and immediately starts ranting at him. She says Des should have refused to speak to her father, not take his side! She reckons he's had 15 years to make things up with her, now she wants nothing to do with him. Des awkwardly admits that he's invited her father over tonight. Daphne says he'll just have to un- invite him(!)
Paul tells Harold that unfortunately the shop has been leased - yesterday. Paul says it might be just as well - a health food shop is going to be opening just up the road, so Harold would have been in competition with them anyway. Paul suggests another investment and takes Harold off to the outer office to talk about it. When he's gone, Madge tells Helen about Harold buying her an engagement ring and they both squeal!
Daphne is clattering around the shop and Mike is trying to study at a table. Eileen comes in. Daphne has forgotten that she invited Eileen to dinner and tells her she'll have to call it off. Eileen protests that she's already made a cake. Daphne tells her to take it up with Des!
Paul has had excellent feedback from the recent conference and a promise of business for the future, so he is very pleased. Jane tells Helen that Henry has got a job and says she can't imagine Henry as a criminal. Helen says he isn't really - he just got in with the wrong crowd and he happened to be arrested while the others got away. Jane looks thoughtful.
Henry is still giving out icecream. Mrs Mangel comes over and scolds him, but Henry protests that he's doing his job. She warns Henry to stay away from Jane - she won't have her associating with criminals. Henry protests that he was only talking to her!
Harold has bought Madge's ring but he won't show it to her until tonight. He does tell her that it is a diamond, though.
Henry is packing up his things and is being shooed away by Mrs Mangel. Henry is about to say something when Mrs Mangel calls him "riff- raff" but decides he can't be bothered(!) and drives away.
Harold sees Mrs Mangel and comes over to show her Madge's engagement ring to see if it's suitable. She says it's a bit small and cheap- looking(!) and at least Harold won't have wasted too much money if he and Madge split up(!)
Harold has come to canvas Helen's opinion on the ring. He shows her the ring and Helen thinks it's very nice...but the stone is rather small. However, she thinks Madge will love it because it came from Harold.
Eileen has turned up to grill Des! Des explains about Daphne falling out with her father. Eileen immediately takes Daphne's father's side even though they've never met(!) Eileen says she can entertain Daphne's father tonight if Daphne isn't going to be there(!)
Madge is moaning at Henry about hanging around Lassiter's in his icecream van. While they're talking, a rough- looking bloke comes in. He looks at Henry's costume and says he hopes he'll be paying him back soon. Madge looks worried!
Mrs Mangel comes in with some tea- towels for the bar and says that it must be difficult for Henry to get a job with a prison record. Then she tells Madge she's seen her engagement ring and Madge doesn't look very pleased. She squares up to Mrs Mangel and says it's not the size of the ring that causes a marriage to break(!) Mrs Mangel stomps off.
(Later at Lassiter's Restaurant)
Madge and Harold are having dinner. Harold takes out the ring and tells Madge to close her eyes. The ring he puts on her finger has a much bigger stone than the one he showed Mrs Mangel - he took that one back and got a larger one. Madge starts to cry - she loves it.
Daphne has made dinner for Des and Mike, but now she is going out to avoid her father. Des pleads with her to give him five minutes, but she says she won't even give him one minute! As she's leaving, though, the doorbell sounds.
