Charlene tells Scott that Max has lined up a job for her as a motor mechanic apprentice - in Brisbane.
Scott takes this news in. Charlene can't see that she has any choice but to go - and Madge has booked her on a bus for late this afternoon. She has to get there quickly because the bloke wants her to start straightaway. Scott is absolutely gutted. Charlene says she'll only have do be away a year - after that, she can try and get an apprenticeship back in Melbourne. Scott thinks she will meet another guy, but Charlene says they can have a long- distance relationship. Scott storms off.
Mike is raving about how much he likes Uni and all the clubs, new people etc. Des warns him that he has to study too! Des says suddenly that he's heard from Mike's mother - she wants to set up a trust fund for Mike. Mike says that he doesn't want any of his father's money.
Scott comes around and offers Mike a lift to Uni. When Mike has gone, Des says Mike's mother can do what she likes about the trust fund - Mike doesn't have to do anything with it.
Scott is telling Mike about the situation with Charlene going to Brisbane. Mike thinks Charlene doesn't have much choice - once you get out in the world, you have to take whatever chances you get. Scott moans about being stuck in school for another year.
MIKE: Sorry mate, but to me it seems, if you love her, you've got to let her go. You can't stand in her way.
SCOTT: No, I guess not.
Madge is shocked that Henry is cleaning his shoes(!) He says he's got three job interviews today and he's noticed that interviewers always look at his shoes(!) Charlene tells Madge that she doesn't want to go to Brisbane and leave Madge, Henry and Scott. Madge tells her she'll really miss her and she understands about Scott, but the job is better than going on the dole. Henry reckons Charlene will meet a Gold Coast surfer and forget about Scott! Madge thinks that if it's the real thing with Scott, they can pick up in twelve months. They're both so young and besides, they're always splitting up!
MADGE: You are going on that bus this afternoon and I don't want to hear any more about it!
Henry is wearing a suit for his interview. He sympathises with her about leaving Scott behind, and Madge has arranged to take the day off to spend it with Charlene. She suggests they go into town to get Charlene a few new clothes.
CHARLENE: Scott, you know I don't want to leave you. I promise I won't even look at another guy!
SCOTT:(hugging her) A year's not such a long time, I guess.
He says they can spend time together today, but Charlene says that she's already spending the day with Madge.
Scott is moping around the house. He tells Jim that he's been driving around all day. Then he tells Jim that Charlene has been offered an apprenticeship in Brisbane. Jim says it's not the end of the world, but offers Scott his support.
Scott changes his shirt and mopes around a bit more. He then looks at a picture of him and Charlene and a flashback starts! Charlene and scott are seen in a playground on swings, then a seesaw, then a slide. Then they are kissing on a grassy bank (yuk)
Charlene and Madge are back from town. Charlene is anxious to get home to pack and see Scott. Mike tells Charlene that he and Jane will really miss her, and wishes her all the best. As Charlene and Madge are leaving, Daphne comes in and wishes Charlene all the best too.
When they've gone, Mike says that Daphne had a visitor today - it was her father. Daphne is stunned.
DAPHNE: My father?
MIKE: Yes, he wanted to see you.
Charlene has come to visit Scott, but he has fallen asleep on his bed, clutching his photo of Charlene. Charlene goes to wake him up, but then she starts getting a flashback herself! We see Scott's car overturning, Scott at the hospital after surgery and Charlene telling him that she loves him.
Back in reality, Charlene starts to cry.
CHARLENE: I'll always love you.
Henry is dressed up in a top hat and tails, and tells Madge that he's got a job in a circus! Not a real one, the company is called "Icecream Circus" and they sell icecream out of a van. Madge says that at least it's a job - even though she'd prefer something with prospects for him!
Charlene comes out and says Scott isn't driving her to the bus - she thinks it would be too painful.
Des comes in for an iced doughnut and Mike asks him about Daphne's father. Des says Daphne doesn't talk about him much - apparently there was a huge falling- out when Daphne was a teenager and she cut him out of his life. He doesn't think Daphne has seen her father for at least eight years. Daphne comes out and tells them that she doesn't want her father anywhere near him.
Scott has woken up and Jim breaks the news that Charlene and Madge have already left. He dashes off.
Madge and Henry are seeing Charlene off.
Scott is racing to the bus station.
Charlene hugs Madge and Henry and holds back tears. Then she gets on the bus. Madge and Henry wave as they get in a taxi.
Scott is still racing to the bus station.
The bus pulls out and Scott hasn't made it. He looks gutted. But then he sees Charlene standing in the depot - she hasn't got on the bus after all. They hug.
CHARLENE: I knew I couldn't leave you!
