Charlene asks Madge for $1,000 to pay off Henry's prison gambling debts.
Charlene tells Madge that Henry will not get out of prison alive if he does not pay and that Madge should cash in her $5,000 from her investment account. Madge angrily tells her that no one is getting that money as it is for her retirement. Charlene accuses her of not caring. Madge refuses to pay and Shane agrees that Madge has bailed him out too often. Henry is old enough to stand on his own two feet. Charlene storms out trying to figure out how to find the money herself.
Charlene bumps into Mike who is looking for Bouncer. He asks her what is wrong and she replies that it is nothing that she cannot handle unless he has a spare $1,000 lying around. He asks if she is in trouble but she tells him that it is nothing that she cannot handle. She asks where Daphne is and heads for the coffee shop.
Madge feels that Charlene cares more about Henry than anyone else in the family. Shane tells Madge that the longer that she plays Santa Claus, the longer it will take Henry and Charlene to learn that they are responsible for their own actions. Whatever mess Henry has got himself into he can get himself out off. Madge cannot settle and goes off to see Henry to find out what is going on.
When Charlene tells Daphne that Madge should help Henry out “just this once” she reminds Charlene this is not the first time. Daphne refuses to take sides. Mike appears still without Bouncer so she tells him to keep looking as the shop is quiet. Daphne reflects that Mike hasn't got anyone close to him other than Des and herself. Charlene jumps in saying that Henry only has Madge and her to turn to. Daphne tries to tell Charlene that if Henry really cares for Madge he would not have put her through this. Madge is trying to do her best and if she thinks Henry should take responsibility for his own gambling debt then that she has to do. How many times has Henry promised to pay her back before? Charlene concedes “a lot”.
Des is making notes from a pregnancy book. Mike appears, still Bouncer-less. She spots a toy that Jane had brought around for Bouncer. Des tries to reassure him “Pups are like kids. You can't pat them on the head and expect them to be able to look after themselves”. He'll come round when he's hungry enough. As they prepare lunch Des produces a list that he has made from the book about healthy eating for Daphne…”protein, vitamins, iron… and stuff” He goes to the fridge to make spinach tart followed by bread and butter custard only to discover there are no eggs. Des ignores Mike's protests that he can't make custard without eggs but telling him that he will add a little extra milk and a dash of flour.
Shane is chopping onions as Charlene appears wanting to know where Madge is. Charlene's reaction to the news is that the last thing Henry needs is another lecture. Shane tells Charlene bluntly that she and Henry can't expect Madge to drop everything and come when they whistle as she has her own life too. Madge returns and Charlene immediately has a go at Madge before she can put her bag down. Shane sits down with Madge to find out how she got on. A tearful Madge tells then that she has seen Henry's bruised ribs and that he can expect another beating if no money is found before the morning. Madge doesn't think she can take the money from her investment account before then. Shane believes the only way Henry will learn is to take the beating, despite Charlene's protests.
Daphne arrives for lunch asking if the dinner is burning. He sits her down for a “nutritious and delicious meal”. She whispers to Mike “Why didn't you try and talk him out of it?” Mike replies that he tried but “you know what he is like when he gets these crazy ideas”. Mike tries o make excuses about leaving to see if the Robinson's have seen Bouncer but Des will have none of it. The doorbell rings and Madge asks for Des. Mike sees his opportunity and leaves before eating Des' cooking. Daphne suggests that they go into the living room but Des tells her to eat up before it gets cold (while leaving his own lunch!) Daphne examines her plate very closely.
Meanwhile Madge asks Des for her investment back by the morning. Des reminds her about the 30 days notice but offers to clear it with Head Office or set up a Bank Loan. He suggests that she comes back in the morning and he will organise it one way or the other. Daphne appears, having wrapped her lunch in a napkin before throwing it in the bin. Daphne suggests that Madge stays for a coffee and a chat about Henry. Madge admits that she does not know if she should help him.
Mike finds Lucy playing with Bouncer. Mike tells Lucy he has been worried sick and she replies that she had found him in the street and tried to bring him back before but Mike had not been there. Mike tells her that if it happens again she is to come and find him straight away.
Charlene opens the door to Harold. Charlene invites him to lunch and chats about his family while they wait for Madge. Charlene asks him if he would do anything for his kids but Shane steps in before she can tell Harold about the money that Henry needs. Madge returns and tells Shane about the bank loan. Charlene asks Harold to agree that Madge should find the money but he tells them all that he feels Henry should stand on his own two feet. Charlene can't believe it and storms out in tears.
The next day Madge is getting ready to go to the prison. Charlene hugs her when she hears about the bank loan but tells her that she cannot just go to the prison and hand the money over. She explains that Henry has a plan that Madge has to give the money to a lady round the back of Lassiters and she will ensure that the money gets to the prison. Madge is reluctant as she has not met this woman and she may just hand the money to Henry. She tells Charlene that she is not going to pick Henry up. He has to make his own way home as he is so clever.
Mike sees Lucy walking down the road and runs with Bouncer after her, to apologise. He asks her to take Bouncer. She looks confused and asked if he means for today or forever. Mike explains that he means forever as he cannot look after Bouncer when he is at Uni and cannot bear to think of him tied up in the yard all day. Lucy hugs Mike and thanks him.
Back of Lassiters
Madge and Charlene hand over the $1,000 and are disgusted when the woman counts it. Charlene asks if Henry will be ok and the woman replies sure, once I've made the phone call. Charlene tells Madge that it would really make Henry happy if she would give him a lift home. Madge accuses her of only thinking of Henry and says that she will not forgive either of them for what they have put her through.
Charlene is tidying up. Shane tells her that Madge is feeling completely humiliated. There is a knock at the door and Henry appears. Charlene hugs him but Madge stands back. Henry hugs Madge, thanks her for the money and promises to pay it all back. Madge tells him that she is very glad that he is free but he had better be on his way. Charlene is shocked. Madge continues that he has to take responsibility for his own life from now on as she washes her hands of him…
