Recap
- Daphne tries to persuade Kelly to voluntarily turn herself into the police.
Coffee Shop
Mike is in the kitchen practising his boxing moves, as he jabs the air Des comes in and Mike tells him that he would have got him (Shane) with that one. Des scoffs and says "yep if he was standing there with his hands tied behind his back. Ignoring the comment Mike continues jabbing and says that he was terrified when he came in. Des says that he saw Jane's face and she wasn't too impressed with either of them. Mike thinks she will change her mind.
Des leaves the kitchen and Mike follows him into the Coffee Shop asking him if he has changed his mind about training him. Des says he hasn't but Eileen pipes up that Mike doesn't want to end up like Des used to after one of his fights. Des replies that you have to expect one or two bruises. Eileen looks knowingly at Des and says "One of two dozen!" Eileen starts to tell Mike how Des use to come home but Des stops her and then the phone rings and Des answers it.
Clarke House
Daphne is on the phone to Des telling him the good news. Kelly has decided to go to the police. Des wants to know how she managed that. Daphne tells him that she promised that if they let Kelly out on bail that she could stay with them. She knows it is going to be difficult but she feels that Kelly deserves a chance after bring back the money. Des is not happy about it but agrees to Daphne's request. Eileen tells Des that she washes her hands of the both of them taking Kelly in.
Kelly comes into the living room in a dress, complaining that she never wears dresses. Daphne assures her that you do when you are appearing before a magistrate and besides she looks very nice and she wants to get bail doesn't she. Kelly wants to know what happens if she doesn't get bail. Daphne smiles and tells her then she will be the best dressed person in jail.
Mangel House
Eileen arrives in a distressed state at Mrs Mangle's and tells her the dreadful news that Daphne has invited Kelly to live with her again in Desmond's home. Mrs Mangel is shocked to her mortal core....the thought of these undesirables in the street is too awful to contemplate. It is going to reduce the value of her house to nothing. There is nothing for it Eileen is going to have to do something.
Coffee Shop
Mike is serving in the Coffee Shop; he tells Des that he admires him for taking in Kelly again. Des says that while Daphne is pregnant she can have anything she wants. Mike hopes that this time that Kelly will do the right thing. Des replies that at least it will keep Eileen out of their hair for a while. Des is rather shocked to find out that Mike actually likes Eileen, but thinks it is probably because he hasn't had to put up with her for so long.
Daphne arrives with Kelly and tells them the good news, that the magistrate has released Kelly into their care. Des doesn't look very pleased but smiles through gritted teeth and ask how much the bail was, he is rather shocked to discover it is $500.00. Daphne assures him that there is nothing to worry about because Kelly will turn up next week in court. There is however one condition they have to find her a job to show that she wants to go "straight". Des feels that they can't do everything for Kelly. Kelly tells him that she knows that and she is going to prove to them that she can do it for herself.
Clive's House
Des is chatting to Clive on the balcony, he is worried about Daphne, and he feels that she is treating Kelly like some stray puppy that just needs some love and attention. He doesn't want Daphne going through any emotional upheavals at the moment. Clive replies that he doesn't think they will be any harm done, that Daphne had told him about the girl who had died in prison. It might actually help Daphne get rid of some of her guilt. And who knows she might even get through to Kelly. Des is not convinced that she will be able to.
Clive then shows him his book "Born to win" - the psychology of sports motivation he tells Des that it tells you that if you have the wrong attitude it is impossible for you to win. That he has been using it to psych-up Shane for training. Des feels that Clive is wasting his time because Mike is so fired-up he could beat anyone....he is fighting for the honour of his true love. Clive dismisses it and replies so is Shane. Des replies that Mike would flatten Shane in the first round.....er...if there was going to be a fight which there isn't....because we have agreed there isn't. They start to argue who would knock who out if there was a fight...but there is no way to prove it because there isn't going to be a fight...they would see that on the day...if there was going to be a day...which there isn't because there isn't going to be a fight! They end up with their backs to each other both sulking!
Clarke House
Kelly (still wearing a dress) opens the door to Shane who laughs at her and says "What do you know it is a girl" Kelly ignores him and tells him that if he is looking for Daphne she is in the kitchen.
Shane asks Daphne if Des is around and Daphne explains he is over at Clive's. Shane is shocked and feels that they shouldn't be together as Des is Mike's trainer and Clive is his and that they are not acting in a very unprofessional manner. Daphne thinks that he is taking the fight far too seriously.
Shane tells Daphne that he had just come over to tell Des that he has just got a big contract clearing blackberries off an industrial site. He thought he would tell Des in case he was worried about the loan he had given him. Daphne doesn't think he would be worried at all. Daphne then asks if Shane would be clearing the site himself, she explains that he had asked Charlene to give him a hand. Daphne asks if he would give Kelly a job. Shane refuses saying that he doesn't want two inexperienced workers. Daphne pleads with Shane but he stands firm and says "No that is final"
Ramsay Street
We see Shane's van as various garden tools come flying out of it. Shane shouts at the occupant of the van that he had said to put the tools in the van not all over the road. Kelly apologises as she gets out of the van. Shane tells her that he only took her on because of Daphne and if she is going to muck around then they can call it quits right now. Charlene arrives and is not pleased to see Kelly there; she feels that Shane has given Kelly her job. Shane starts to despair and tells them both to get in the van.
Mike comes jogging up the road with Des huffing and puffing about twenty yards behind him. Des shouts after Mike that he doesn't want to tire him out before almost collapsing in the middle of the road. Mike replies that it is Ok; he wants to go around the block again. On seeing Shane in his van Des suddenly spurts into action and blows his whistle and gets Mike to jog on the spot. Des jogs over to the van and practicing his shadow boxing and tells Shane that he hopes that they is no hard feeling about this and jogs off with Mike. As Shane drives away, out of Ramsay Street, Des collapses in the road with his arms around a lamppost, as Mike jogs around and around him.
Clarke House
Mike comes bounding into the kitchen fresh as a spring daisy ready for his breakfast. Daphne asks where Des is, as he crawls into the kitchen and collapses wheezing out of breath and sweating profusely. Daphne tells him that breakfast is ready and Des barely gets out that he isn't hungry through all the wheezing. Daphne is concerned that he is still suffering from Morning sickness, she thinks that if it is going to take this much out of him that he should give up the idea of training Mike. But Mike insists that he needs Des as his trainer. Des wheezes that...he...just...has...to...prove...to...Clive...that...he...is...a...better...trainer. Mike says that he has to beat Shane. Daphne is dismayed and tells the pair of them that Jane has made it perfectly clear that she doesn't approve of fighting. She knows that neither of them are going to listen to her but she thinks it is ridiculous....Mike fighting with Shane and Des fighting with Clive. Des wheezes that he isn't fighting with Clive; it is just two intelligent men having a difference of opinion over training methods, nothing more, nothing less.
Industrial Site...somewhere in Erinsborough
Kelly is walking back from depositing blackberry bush remains into a trailer, when she slips and bumps into Charlene. They start to argue over who has done all the work. Shane pulls them apart and tells Kelly that she is trending on pretty dangerous ground, he doesn't want to hassle her but she promised Daphne that she would give this job her best shot. So why doesn't she get on with it. Kelly doesn't think it is fair because she has really been trying.
Charlene shouts from the blackberry bushes that how come she is the one being doing all the work. She feels that Shane is wasting his time, if he knew what Kelly was like at school he wouldn't bother. Kelly storms over to where Charlene is. Charlene continues that she heard all about you Morgan, you were the one who burnt down the science block. Shane shouts at Charlene to leave Kelly alone, whatever she did was a long time ago. Charlene snaps back well stealing Mrs Clarke's handbag is recent enough. Kelly tells Charlene that she has been asking for this...and pushes her down the bank into the blackberry bushes.
Mangel House
Hammering is heard from the front door of the Mangel house. Inside Mrs Mangel looks worried, not knowing who is at the door. She takes a very large and heavy metal sledge hammer type mallet and drags it to the front door before shakily opening the door to Eileen. Eileen bursts into the house and says that she has been so worried about her. Mrs Mangel replies that as you can see she is taking precautions, there is no knowing where that dreadful criminal might strike. Eileen replies that at least she has a man to protect her. Mrs Mangel tells her that Len does his best but he isn't the most physical of men! Eileen smiles "No" Mrs Mangel replies "NO!" and immediately changes the subject.
As Mrs Mangel leaves the room to make a cup of tea and Eileen rushes around the room checking the chair, coffee table & mantelpiece for dust and is very disappointed not to find any! When Mrs Mangel returns she tells Eileen that she can't go on living like this barricaded behind doors and a prisoner in her own home. Eileen says that she understands she can't even visit her own son; she is in terror of her own life. Mrs Mangel moans "if there is only something they could do" Eileen tells her that she did have one idea while she was tossing and turning in her sleep last night. What if some civic minded person started a petition to stop the criminal element moving into the street? She would do it herself but because of the sake of family harmony. Mrs Mangel thinks that almost everyone would sign and there is nothing stopping her from taking up their cause.
Industrial Site...somewhere in Erinsborough
Shane is picking up Charlene from the ground, while she growls at Kelly that she could kill her for that. Kelly doesn't think she has the guts. Charlene flies at Kelly and they start to fight and Shane pulls apart. He tells them that they are here to work and not to argue and that he is paying them by the hour so he wants some value for his money and if he doesn't get that from either of them then he doesn't want them around. Kelly sneers "Who needs you anyway Ramsay". Charlene shouts "You do, if you haven't got a job, you go to jail" Kelly flies at Charlene and they start to fight again. Shane pulls them apart and fires them both. Charlene argues with Shane that she needs the money but Shane tells her that she should have thought of that before. Charlene storms off; pushing Kelly out of the way as she goes.
Shane says to Kelly, how is Daphne going to feel after all the trouble she went to get you this job. Kelly says that all she cares about is the $200.00 she was dumb enough to give back to her. Shane looks at her in disgust and tells her that she has said her piece and she should now clear out and let him get on with his work.
Clive's House
Mrs Mangel arrives at Clive's and reminds him of how her high opinion of him has been severely diminished due to the proposed boxing match. Clive replies that the memory of her words of reproach is like a sword in his side. Mrs Mangel offers him the opportunity to repair the damage, she needs his help to eradicate an evil growth in their midst. She is circulating a petition which she is sure all civic minded residents will be happy to sign for the removal of Kelly Morgan from Ramsay Street. Clive wants to know why she would want to do this. Mrs Mangel feels that it is obvious and lectures Clive on the fall in property values if she were to stay. Clive thinks that it is good to live in a street where people are prepared to help someone who is down on their luck. Mrs Mangel ignores his comments and tells him that as soon as the criminal fraternity realise how easy it is to penetrate the homes of decent people the whole street will be awash with them.
Clive informs Mrs Mangel that one of her bail conditions is that she can't mix with anyone with a criminal record. Mrs Mangel replies that Kelly will start corrupting the innocent children in the street. Lucy Robinson, Sam Cole and Mrs Clarke's grandson-to-be! Clive thinks this is plain ridiculous.
As Clive argues that Kelly deservers a second chance, Charlene arrives with mud on her face and scratches down her arms. Mrs Mangel is shocked by her appearance and wants to know what has happened. Charlene explains that it was Kelly Morgan, and Mrs Mangel is delighted to tell her about her petition. Charlene eagerly signs the petition much to Clive's disappointment.
Clarke House
Des and Daphne are canoodling on the settee: Daphne is saying that it is great to be able to leave the Coffee Shop to Mike. Des says that he thinks they have done a good job there and he is even starting to warm to Kelly. Daphne thinks he is just a big softie and Des replies that he will show her who is a big softie and pushes Daphne against the cushions and is just about to go for a serious "pash" when Eileen interrupts them. (Her timing is legendary)
Eileen has bought a little pair of booties to go with the sailor suit for Winston. She explains that this will be her last visit here for sometime, as she can't continue to risk her life by visiting this house while that criminal remains. Des seems uninterested and says that is obviously up to her. Daphne tells her that they don't want her to stay away, but Des pokes her in the ribs. Daphne continues that Kelly needs support from all of them. Eileen is not to be swayed she feels that what Kelly needs is to be put away, she should not be allowed to influence an innocent little baby who can't fend for itself. Daphne thinks Kelly wouldn't hurt the baby and will probably be long gone when "She" is born. Eileen makes a dramatic exit and says that she will be in her lonely little house if anyone wants to see her.
Coffee Shop
Kelly comes into the Coffee Shop and Mike asks her if she would like a free cup of coffee. Kelly wants to know what the catch is; Mike tells her that there is no catch it is just that the dogs have got into the bins and he needed to go and clear up the mess and all he needs is someone to mind the shop while he goes and clears it up. Kelly agrees to give him a call if anyone comes in.
As Mike goes to sort things out, Kelly wanders around the Coffee Shop and goes behind the counter to make a cup of coffee, opens the till and takes out a wad of $50.00 bills and smiles......
