Recap
- Daphne finding a note from Kelly explaining that she is leaving.
Clarke House
Daphne is dismayed at Kelly's leaving telling Des he can say "I told you so!" Des replies he is not going to say any such thing but she can probably say good-bye to the bail money. Daphne isn't interested in the bail money; she just wanted to give Kelly a bit of love and understanding for once in her life. She blames herself for Kelly's reaction because she tore strips off her. Des replies the reason Kelly has gone is because she is frightened of the court appearance and he feels that they should inform the police. Daphne doesn't want to do that as Kelly has another week to go and she deserves a second chance. Des agrees reluctantly but thinks Kelly has had enough "second chances" but that they should look on the bright side at least they have the place to themselves. Daphne scoffs and replies only until Eileen finds out then she will be back like a shot to crow. Des promises not to tell her.
Ramsay House
Charlene, Jane and Nicky are having a "girly" afternoon with curlers or ribbons in their hair and over the top make-up! Nicky doesn't know why Charlene and she are bothering as neither of them have boyfriends unlike Jane. Charlene pipes up who would have believed it two months ago Jane super brain couldn't get a boyfriend and now she has Shane and Mike fighting over her. Nicky thinks that Shane is a nice enough but that Jane shouldn't go out with him as he is used to much older women with more experience and she thinks Shane will expect a bit more than a good-night kiss...if you know what she means! Jane says she can handle herself; she won't be pressured into doing anything she doesn't want to do.
Lucy rushes in and tells Nicky her mother is on the phone from the States and she rushes off to take the call. Lucy compliments Charlene on her eye shadow (which is quite over the top even for 1980s standards!) Lucy wants to try some of the make-up as well and Charlene agrees. Lucy then manages to smear lipstick all over her mouth.
Mangel House
Mrs Mangel and Madge are having afternoon tea, discussing the upbringing of teenage girls. Mrs Mangel feels that they need to be strong and instil in them good morals as she has been trying to do with Jane, especially concerning this older man she is now seeing. Madge pipes "we talking about Shane...are we" Mrs Mangel replies that they are and continues that she is not suggesting that he is morally bereft but that young men these days are only after one thing! Shane has had quite a few girlfriends and she can't understand why he is chasing after Jane unless of course it is for the conquest.
Madge physically takes a deep breath and tells Mrs Mangel that her granddaughter (Jane) is quite old enough to make up her mind who she sees. Shane is not the lecherous type and if they want to go on seeing each other then she is not going to interfere. Mrs Mangel takes a sip of tea and replies that she can now understand where Charlene gets her waywardness from and it is such a shame that she has had such a bad influence on Jane. Madge goes to say something but is interrupted by Mrs Mangel who continues that she has no need to apologise as the whole of society is succumbing to moral degradation. And it is alarming how quickly it is spreading.
Ramsay Street
Jane is crossing the street when Nicky comes rushing over to her to tell her that that she is starting the exchange programme early so she can spend Christmas with her mother. Jane laughs and says she has all the bad luck! Madge is walking forcefully across the road as Nicky blurts out her good news. Madge says good, why don't you take Mrs Mangel with you, you could drop her off over Nigeria Falls don't worry about a barrel. Madge then apologises to Jane and throws her hands up and says ...REALLY...and continues to storm into her house.
Nicky doesn't think the tea party has gone to well and Jane agrees. Jane says terrific just what she needs her Nan being in a bad mood and that no doubt Madge and her grandmother have been arguing over her and Shane. Nicky wants to know if she is definitely going out with Shane. Jane just shrugs and says she doesn't know but Mike has been such a "nerd" lately. Nicky wants to know if she has talked to him about it. Jane replies no but what is she going to say....Mike you are a nerd! They both laugh as Mike approaches them. Nicky says this is a prefect opportunity for her to talk to him and pushes Jane towards Mike and runs back into the Robinson house.
There is a lot of awkwardness between Mike and Jane, each saying Hi and nothing else, finally Mike says that he was wondering if they could have a talk. Jane agrees, Mike suggests they go to the Clarke house. Nicky hiding behind a bush smiles on as she sees them go off together.
Clarke House
In the living room Mike is asking Jane if she would like to go to Des' party with him the following afternoon. Jane says she is not sure, Mike assumes that she is going with Shane, but Jane corrects him and tells him that she isn't going with anyone. Mike apologises for his recent actions, fighting with Shane, kissing Nicky to get back at her, he just wants things back they way they were. The only reason he did it was to get her back, he has been acting like a real....... Jane butts in "Nerd" Jane tells Mike to stop making her feel guilty he has bought it all on himself. Everyone is always onto her to make a decision push, push to this do that. Even she doesn't know how she feels; she hasn't had time to think about it. Mike apologises again, and Jane tells him to stop apologising all the time. She just needs some time to sort herself out; she is not being difficult but will give him her answer in the morning. Mike reluctantly agrees.
Ramsay House
Madge is in the kitchen cooking with Charlene, she is ranting about Mrs Mangel. Mrs Mangel had had the audacity to accuse her of loose morals, and Charlene's Uncle Tom and Max...which is totally ridiculous as he has no morals, loose or otherwise. Charlene doesn't understand why Madge is so upset; she had never let Mrs Mangel get to her before what else is worrying her. Madge admits that it was Henry's parole hearing today and she is worrying about the house, it was good of Ray to offer us the loan but she isn't sure that she can pay him back. There isn't enough money coming into the house even with Shane's board. Charlene tells her that she will have job in a few months but Madge isn't convinced it will be as easy as that. Charlene then suggests that maybe they get a smaller place with two bedrooms, but Madge really wants a family home for all of them including Henry and Shane. Charlene suggests that Shane and Madge buy the house together; Madge says that she will have a chat with him about it.
The phone rings....Henry got his parole he will be out tomorrow.
Mangel House
Mrs Mangel is dealing with some correspondence as Jane returns home, she wonders where Jane has been gallivanting to...no doubt with that man of hers! Jane informs Mrs Mangel that she has just left Mike. Mrs Mangel comments what a nice reliable and responsible boy Mike is. Jane is dismayed as Mrs Mangel has never has a good word to say about Mike before. Mrs Mangel informs Jane that a woman has a right to change her mind. She continues that Jane and Mike are right for each other with similar ages and interests, that they have the rest of their lives. Jane argues that Shane is hardly an old-age pensioner; he knows how to treat a girl. He can afford to take her out to a nice restaurant once in a while. Mrs Mangel looks knowingly at Jane and tells her that she is only interested in having a good time and that there are words for girls like that! And that she is enjoying having two guys fight over her.
Jane admits that she is, that she has been the ugly ducking all her life and that she is enjoying being the centre of attention for once. She hasn't decided who she wants to go out with yet. She is only seventeen and she isn't thinking of settling down yet and she wants to have some fun. Jane walks off and Mrs Mangel calls after her "Fun...we weren't put on this earth to enjoy ourselves young lady"
Ramsay House
Shane arrives home and Madge tells Shane the good news about Henry and than suggests to Charlene that she was just about to go and tidy her room. It takes Charlene a few seconds to realise that Madge wants to have a private chat with Shane.
Madge asks if they could have a little talk, Shane immediately says about the house and how pleased he is that Ray is helping them out with the loan that he would hate to see the house sold. Madge replies that she doesn't think she will be able to take the loan. Shane is dismayed because he thought it was all arranged. Madge says that it is but she has been working out the figures and that she didn't realise how much she will have to pay back each week. Shane says he would hate to see the house sold off to strangers he is the last Ramsay in Ramsay Street this whole suburb used to be his great-great grand parents orchard.
Madge says that she feels as badly about it as him, she wanted to make a real family home for all of them. Shane feels guilty and says it is all his fault, if he had turned up to see the building society manager...Madge stops him and tells him that it isn't his fault. But if his offer to help still stand maybe he could help out with the repayments. Shane looks awkward and says that he would love to but he has just taken out a loan with Des to get the business going. Madge replies "Oh...you got that loan did you...oh well never mind" and get up from the table to leave. Shane stops her and says "Well maybe he could help out, how would she feel about the house being in joint names". Madge readily agrees and says what ever percentage he pays for would be rightly his. Shane thinks it over and replies that he should be able to mange something, Madge wants to if he is sure; what if he gets married? Shane smiles and says he will cross that bridge when it comes. Madge gives him a big smile and a hug.

Mangel House
Jane is in the living room as Mrs Mangel enters, she apologises saying that she is sorry that she snapped at her earlier but she gets confused with everyone giving her advice all the time, she likes both Shane and Mike and she doesn't want to hurt either of them.
Mrs Mangel thinks they should ring Jane's mother and father, Jane wants to know why. Mrs Mangel tells her that maybe they can get through to her, because she can't. Jane feels that they wouldn't care. Mrs Mangel insists that they do care they are just very busy setting up their business. Jane just scoffs and says that they are too busy to worry about her problems.
There is a knock at the door and it is Shane, who asks to speak to Jane. He tells her that he doesn't know if she knows or not but there is a surprise party for Des tomorrow and would she like to go with him. Jane asks it she can let him know in the morning, Shane replies sure and says good-bye to Mrs Mangel and leaves. Jane leans against the wall and moans "Now what am I going to do" Mrs Mangel tells her "As one makes ones own bed so one must...."she hesitates for a moment and continues...."one must lie in it"
Clarke House
Daphne and Mike are putting out the breakfast things as Daphne asks Mike how he is feeling this morning. Mike replies that if Jane doesn't want to go to the party with him he could always throw himself off a cliff. Daphne remarks that it is always good to have a positive attitude.
Des joins them and Daphne gives him a big hug and wishes him Happy Birthday. Des says he isn't so sure about the birthday he isn't feeling very well and puts his hand on his stomach. Mike thinks it is his age and hands him a prezzie...a sweatshirt. Then Daphne kisses Des and gives him her prezzie...a new pen. Mike whispers to Des, while Daphne has gone back into the kitchen "What is the problem? Did he go out on a binge last night" Des denies it and says that he doesn't know what it is but he has a bit of a queasy stomach.
Daphne returns and Des thanks her for the present, but he says that he can't face the breakfast she has put in front of him. Daphne thinks he should go and see Clive again if he still isn't feeling too well. But Des thinks it will be Ok that his "ailments" usually get better once he has been up for a while.
Des then asks Daphne what she has got planned for the day. Mike gives Daphne a knowing look and rushes off while Daphne tries to give Des lame excuses for her coming day like doing the housework. Des doesn't think that is good idea on his birthday, he suggests that they go to a quiet little restaurant just the two of them. But Daphne doesn't think it is a good idea considering how Des is feeling unwell. Des insists he will be ok by this evening. Daphne apologises but says she won't; that she has to help Helen with the school fete. Des gets very disappointed with Daphne's attitude. Daphne asks where he is going. Rather childishly Des tells her that he is going back to bed. If his own wife doesn't want to celebrate his birthday with him he might as well go back to bed until it is all over.
Daphne giggles as Des goes back into the bedroom. Mike returns to the breakfast table and she tells him that she feels rotten but that Des will feel better once he knows about his surprise party. She tells Mike that he has to keep him away from the Robinsons until they are ready. Mike thinks it isn't going to be easy. Daphne just smiles and says that it is a rotten job but someone has to do it.
Mangel House
The car horn is beeping outside the house as Mrs Mangel searches for her prayer book. As Jane comes into the room Mrs Mangel suggests she comes to church with her, she could do with some spiritual guidance. Jane declines the offer, and then Mrs Mangel asks if she has made her decision, rather despondently Jane says she hasn't. Mrs Mangel finally finds her prayer book, as the horn outside continues to beep. Mrs Mangel feels that Jane could do a lot worse than Mike he is such a nice boy. The horn beeps for a third time, Mrs Mangel rushes off in a fluster as Jane says still despondently "So is Shane"
Ramsay House
Charlene and Madge are cooking for the big event - Des' party. Charlene wonders if Des knows anything about it. Madge thinks it is unlikely as Daphne can be very secretive when he wants to be. Madge teases Charlene and says that Scott will be at the party Charlene shrugs it off and says she doesn't care and changes the subject by saying that she is glad that Shane could help out with the house payments. Madge agrees that it is the first good night's sleep she has had for ages. It is all agreed and Ray is drawing up the papers. She is going to make a good home for all of them; she just hopes that Henry is ready to settle down now.
Shane comes into the kitchen and wishes him good morning. Madge comments about everyone being in a good mood this morning. Shane pinches one of the cakes and juggles it as it is hot...Madge laughs and tells him it serves him right. Shane tells them he is just off over to see Jane about this afternoon. Charlene says that she didn't know that she had agreed to go with him. Shane tells her that she hasn't but she will. Madge replies that Mrs Mangel won't like it. As Shane goes off eating the cake he calls back...that is isn't going to let that battle axe run his life. Madge hopes Jane knows what she is doing.
Ramsay Street
Mike is waiting restlessly in the street at the Mangel house as Jane comes out. He approaches her and makes some rather small talk about her dress, they seem very awkward around each other. Mike asks Jane if she has made a decision about the party he isn't trying to hassle her but she did say that she would let him know today. In the background Shane is approaching them. Jane tells him that she has thought about it and she has made up her mind.......
