Recap
Mrs Mangel knocks loudly on the Clarkes' front door and demands to know from Mike where Jane has gone. Despite Mike's reassurances that they have probably been delayed, Mrs Mangel is not convinced and insists on calling the police.
Mike suggests to Mrs Mangel that she needs to calm down. Mrs Mangel insists that it is his entire fault, if Jane hadn't started seeing him then Jane wouldn't have dreamed of doing something as stupid as this. Des and Daphne invite her into the house and tell her that they are sure that there is nothing to worry about as Shane is a very responsible driver on his bike. Mrs Mangel replies that he wasn't a very responsible car driver otherwise Jean Richards wouldn't be dead. Des insists that there is probably a very reasonable logical explanation for Shane and Jane being late. Mrs Mangel insists that "that Ramsay boy wouldn't care but Jane would phone" She doesn't know what she is going to tell Jane's parents! Mrs Mangel says she is going to have Shane charged over this. Des wants to know with what. Mrs Mangel replies with kidnapping.
Mrs Mangel gets more and more overwrought with the situation: Des sits her at the table and takes control of the situation telling Mike to check with all the hospitals outside of Erinsborough and to mark a radius on the map so they can see if they can locate them.
Des and Daphne go into the kitchen to make Mrs Mangel a nice cup of tea. Daphne whispers to Des what does he think? Des replies that Mrs Mangel is right Jane would have called if she could!!!
Ramsay House
Madge and Charlene are doing the dishes and Madge is saying that she could ring Shane's neck for this. It is all she needs is that busy body (Mrs Mangel) giving her a hard time over the phone. Madge insists that Jane isn't the kind of girl to stay out like this is she. Charlene feels that Jane has to live with Mrs Mangel and is doing her HSFC at the same time that maybe she just wanted to get away for a few hours. Madge replies that she can't believe that Shane had let her down at the building society not that it matters she can't make those repayments anyway. Charlene should treasure the roof over her head she might not have it for much longer. Then Madge continues to say that maybe Charlene is right about Jane, she has given up predicting how people will react.
Charlene agrees and goes on to tell Madge about Scott being investigated for possible cheating. And that Scott accused her of dobbing her in, but it was Sue Parker. She declares that it is definitely over between her and Scott.
Clive's House
Susan comes down the stairs dressed in her clown outfit and declares that she feels silly. Clive insists that there is nothing silly about being dressed as a clown and takes her into the kitchen for dinner declaring:
"Ladies and Gentlemen and the young at heart...the greatest show in earth...you have read the book, you have seen the movie ...now eat the menu" He has prepared "High-wire hotdog, lion-tamer lasagne, trapeze pizza and wine for a funny lady" Susan says she isn't very funny...just then the lights go out as the entire street is thrown into darkness from a power cut. Susan laughs that Clive had planned the blackout as he produced a very wonky candlestick.
Clarke House
Des has his head in a cupboard as Daphne, Mike and Mrs Mangle stumble around in the darkness. Daphne wants to know what Des is doing; he said the candles were in here weren't they. Daphne says that they were until last week when Des decided to rearrange all the cupboards. Mrs Mangel moans that she wants to call the police. Daphne asks her why doesn't she check with Mr Mangel maybe Jane has called him. Mrs Mangel says that Mr Mangel is away from home at the moment. Daphne insists that, that is even more of a reason for her to be at home in case Jane rings. Mrs Mangel is indignant she couldn't walk home in the darkness she might be assaulted. Des whispers under his breath..."You never know your luck" Mrs Mangel asks him what he said and Des Replies "What rotten luck about the blackout"
Des goes on to say that Mrs Mangel shouldn't let the darkness get her down it is just like being at the movies. Des continues you remember the last time we were at the movies Daphne? Daphne smiles and says it was hard to forget and moves away as Des finally lights a candle. In the darkness he mistakes Daphne for Mrs Mangel and gropes and tries to kiss her! Des apologises immediately to her about the mistaken identity but Mrs Mangel hits him hard on the arm.
Ramsay House
Ray arrives at Madge's and comments about them being on candle power and offers them the use of the oil lamp he has in the back of the car. Madge declines the offer as Charlene makes an excuse and leaves the room. Ray asks Madge to sit down as he has a proposal to make and he wants a fair hearing before she tells him to jump in the lake.
Clarke House
Des is on the phone as Daphne and Mrs Mangel shout at each other over Jane's disappearance. Daphne is defending Shane saying that he would no more take advantage of Jane that Des would. Mrs Mangel shouts back that she has recently had practical experience of Des intentions! Mike fuels the argument but saying that Shane is always bragging about the number of girls he has had. Des insists that there is a vast difference between a woman like Patti Collins and a girl like Jane. Mrs Mangel getting over wrought again replies that they could be in a different state by now and thank heavens that kidnapping is a federal offence. Des finally loses his temper and shouts at Mrs Mangel that they should all stay calm. Lowering his voice he says calmly that now that they have called all the hospitals he will call the police and they will be no talk of kidnapping! Mrs Mangel replies what I am going to tell Jane's parents if that boy has turned Jane into one of those "Hills" Angels. Daphne rolls her eyes and tells Mrs Mangel that she means "Hells" Angels.
Clive's House
Susan comes back from putting little Sam to bed. Clive comments on it being the best time of your life being a baby when you are protected before you go off into the real world. Susan agrees and says especially the ones you fall in love with. They go into the living room carrying the candles and Clive says it isn't everyday that he gets a chance to share a glass of moonlight with the most beautiful girl in the world. Susan says that he doesn't mean that. Clive replies that he might joke but that he never lies about a thing like that. Susan plays with the decorations in the room and remorsefully replies that is why he gets hurt so much. You should be more like Paul, he just takes, no strings and no commitments. Clive thinks that Paul is a bore. Susan continues that she knows what Paul is like but she just keeps letting him hurt her. Clive says he wishes he could do something about that. They sit out the couch and Clive puts his arm around Susan and they agree to be friends...best friends.
Ramsay House
Madge is turning down Ray's offer for a loan so that she can buy the house. She argues that he could get a better return almost anywhere else. Ray agrees but says is Madge turning him down just because of pride? He doesn't need a big house just a bachelor pad with all the travelling he does and he knows that he will get a good return on his money. It will all be drawn up legally. Madge finally agrees to the loan as the electricity is restored to Ramsay Street.
Clarke House
Mrs Mangel is leaving and Daphne is explaining to her that the police get cases like this everyday, they can't perform miracles.
Mrs Mangel: "I expect value for money.....I pay my taxes"
Daphne suggests that Mrs Mangel checks with Madge, she is sure she would have heard from her by now. Mrs Mangel goes off in a huff saying that she fully intends to and to tell Madge exactly what she thinks of Shane.
Des asks Daphne why she had to inflict Mrs Mangel on Madge, Daphne replies that why should they be the only ones to cop it...it isn't even their problem. She continues to tease Des as to the next time he gropes someone in the dark to make sure he gets the right person. Des should wait until tomorrow; it will be all around the bank what an octopus he is.
Mike is looking very despondent staring out into space. Daphne tries to cheer him up by saying that just because Jane has gone off on a bike with Shane that doesn't mean she has done anything. Mike feels that she shouldn't have gone off in the first place; she is supposed to be her girlfriend after all. Daphne feels that Mike doesn't own Jane and that she is free to make her own friends and when all is said and done Shane isn't that great. Mike reminds Daphne that she wouldn't have said that when she was engaged to him. Des agrees. Mike replies that, if Shane wants Jane, what hope has he got and leaves the room. Daphne turns on Des and says if he opens his mouth any further he might be able to get both feet in.
Clive's House
Susan notices that the lights are back on in Ramsay Street but she and Clive are still sitting in the darkness. Clive says that he switched all the lights off when they had the power cut so not to blow a fuse. Still down Susan says that she used to be like Paul until she had Sam just taking what she wanted from life. But now she wants Sam to have a father who loves him and a happy home in which to grow up. She doesn't want anything for herself except the one thing she can't have. Clive thinks that Paul is blaming himself for Terri's death maybe she should give him a little bit more time. Susan replies that time isn't going to change anything; it is finished. Clive says that she should find someone else and gently moves forward and kisses her. Susan looks into Clive's eye's and smiles at him as they kiss for a second time.
The next morning Clive is very happy singing in the kitchen and hands Sam his bottle telling him that he is just going to have to get used to the good life...the best house, the best education and even a BMX bike but don't ask him about women because that is one mystery that he is going to have to figure out for himself. One day when he falls in love he will tell him how he fell in love with his mother and that he will not believe it.
Susan comes into the kitchen and apologies for being so morose last night when he went to so much trouble. Clive kisses her and tells her that she looked beautiful by moonlight and that she is just going to have to get used to happiness because that is all there is going to be in the house. Susan looks uncomfortable about the pervious evening.
Ramsay House
Charlene comes into the kitchen and asks Madge did she dream it or did she say that Ray was going to lend them the money for the house? Madge replies that she wasn't dreaming and that they hadn't sorted out the details yet but they would still need to budget. Charlene says that that won't be a problem as she is going to leave school after her exams....the family that kicks into together, sticks into together.
Mrs Mangel walks in through the backdoor saying that she warned Madge last night that she is going to have her nephew (Shane) charged with abduction. Madge asks Charlene to get Shane up. She then turns to Mrs Mangel and asks her if that is Jane's story that Shane adducted her. Charlene shouts from the bedroom that Shane's bed hasn't been slept in...Madge is dismayed as she thought she heard him come in. Mrs Mangel demands to know what Shane has done with her granddaughter! Madge tells Mrs Mangel to stop shouting she is just as worried and concerned as she is. Charlene replies that there must be some explanation. Madge comments fears something must have happened to them.
Clive's House
Clive is telling Susan he has a surprise for her, once the house is his he is putting half of it into her name. He doesn't want any arguments he wants Susan and Sam to feel safe and that they belong. Susan protests that he shouldn't do that as there is a knock on the door.
Mike comes in and wants a word with Clive; Susan makes an excuse that she wants to talk to Daphne and leaves. Mike is still despondent over Jane's being absent with Shane and tells Clive that Des still gets jealous over Daphne's old boyfriends. Clive says do you honestly think that Jane has run off with Shane? Mike says he knows it is stupid. Clive replies of course it is they would never get on with their names rhyming like that! They might be is some kind of trouble but romance has nothing to do with it. Jealousy will do nothing but ruin your digestion. Mike wants to know what he should do about it. Clive says he doesn't know....get lucky...he did!
Clarke House
Daphne is asking Susan how it happened. Susan said she let it happen; it was her fault she felt so alone. Daphne scoffs that it is a bit hard to imagine Clive as the innocent victim. Susan reasons that after the way Paul had been that she just wanted to be with someone who cared about her. Susan pleads with her that she doesn't know what to do. Daphne suggests that what happened last night happened because Clive was being nice to her maybe what she felt was the real thing. Susan shakes her head sadly and says she knows what she feels about Clive and she thinks the world of him but she can't pretend that she feels more than she does. That she is in love with Paul the idiot that she is. Daphne says that she is going to have to tell Clive that last night was a mistake. Susan replies that she is going to have to do more than that she is going to have to move out and she can't work with Paul, that she will have to go away and that Erinsborough was the first place she felt accepted. Crying she continues that she thought that she could make friends for Sam and her but not anymore.
