Des demands that Mrs Mangel tells them what they've got against Mike. Mrs Mangel doesn't want to say it out loud and just drags Jane off saying "ask him about that other poor girl"
Mike is bemused - he's only ever gone out with Nikky and that wasn't serious. The only other girl was a fling at a swimming gala.
Jane is trying to drag the information about Mike out of Mrs Mangel.
MRS MANGEL: You're so young, you don't know men.
JANE: We haven't done anything!
Mrs Mangel tells Jane to keep away from Mike for her own good. She'll shut Jane away for her own protection if necessary.

Jane tells her she's fed up of people thinking they can run her life because they're older than her. Des has spoken to Mr Muir the headmaster. Apparently Mrs Mangel only made vauge accusations so the headmaster has no quarrel with Mike. Des says that Mike should cool it for a bit with Jane anyway, until the situation blows over. Mike tells Des that he's as bad as the rest of them and stalks off.
Mrs Mangel comes into the pub to see Clive, who is playing darts. They go outside for a chat.
Outside the pub

She says she can't reveal what she knows about Mike because the police have already cautioned her for malicious gossip once in the past. She tells Clive about the anonymous letter. Clive wants to see it saying that he knows that Mrs Mangel would never slander anyone deliberately.
MRS MANGEL: I knew I could trust you, doctor.
She gives Clive the letter.
Clive reads the letter and says it's sick. He says, "Poor old Mike."
The Coffee Shop

But Clive thinks Madge has done the right thing.

In the sitting room, Mike shows Jane the letter, much to Mrs Mangel's horror. Jane can't believe that Mrs Mangel believed the contents of the letter.
