Shane gets out of the car in shock and checks Jean's pulse, but there isn't one. (Don't bother with resuscitation, Shane!!) She is bleeding from the head as well. A bloke passing by stops his car, takes in the situation and gives Shane a cup of something from his flask saying he's in shock. Then he goes to phone for an ambulance, leaving Shane standing silently at the side of the road, holding the bravery medal.
Jim is carrying Lucy home - she's sound asleep (awww!)
Mrs Mangel is telling a long-suffering Daphne's grandfather that Daphne's wedding was "alright" but it wasn't a patch on the wedding of her niece, Colleen. Helen rescues him. Harry despairs of Mrs Mangel, telling Helen that Mrs Mangel has got a voice that could penetrate bullet-proof walls(!)
Clive tells Zoe that his brother Graham is coming to stay for a bit - he's taking over a nearby practice.
The ambulance has arrived and the police are questioning Shane. They ask him if he's been drinking and he says he hasn't had much because he knew he was going to be driving. He'll have to take a test anyway though. Shane breathes into the bag. Unfortunately, Shane is over the limit. Shane is confused as to how this is possible, but then he realises that the guy who stopped must have given him something alcoholic. Unfortunately the guy has disappeared, so Shane will have to go down to the station.
Jim isn't happy to see that Mike has brought Scott alcohol from the party. He angrily sends Mike home.
Jim shouts at Scott for ignoring his authority and then Madge comes in in tears. She tells them that Shane has had an accident and that Jean is dead.
Zoe and Tony are hanging out and having a cup of tea together. Zoe thinks that Des was an odd choice for Daphne, but Tony says they seem perfectly happy. Zoe says she can't believe that anyone ever married Mrs Mangel. Zoe and Tony are about to kiss when Harry and Mrs Mangel come in. Zoe gives Harry a telephone message from someone called Lolita. He rings her straight back.
Mrs Mangel lets slip to Tony about Zoe's miscarriage and Zoe does not look at all pleased. Harry starts cheering - Lolita, a dancer, wants him to help her open a bar. Mrs Mangel is disgusted and storms off home.
HARRY: There goes a bunion on the nose of life!
Madge, Shane and Charlene don't know how they're going to tell Tom. Shane starts to cry and says he wasn't drunk, it was the guy afterwards who gave him something to drink.
Tom comes in and finds Shane crying. He gets up with difficulty and gives Tom the bravery medal. He tells him that he crashed the car and Madge has to finish his sentence - that Jean is dead.
Mike is reading a letter from Nikki. He admits to CLive that he met someone else at Manley, a girl called Cassie. Clive tells Mike that his relatives are coming to visit.
Madge has made Tom a cup of tea. Tom is sitting there completely gutted. Shane tells Tom that he's sorry and he'd give anything for Jean to still be alive, but he wasn't drunk. Tom is angry and doesn't believe Shane's story about the bloke who gave him alcohol after the accident.
Zoe and Tony are talking about the baby. Zoe says that she did want the baby and she's not ashamed of what happened. Tony says he doesn't have the right to judge her, it just all came as a bit of a shock. He tells Zoe that he'd like to stay, and Zoe is very pleased.
Just then, Harry comes out of the bedroom - he's just leaving. Tony shows him out.
Garden of the Ramsays
Tom is sitting on a step, devastated. He tells Madge that he never thought he'd get another chance after Doreen died, but then he met Jean. He tells Madge that Jean was a nice person and he doesn't know what he's going to tell her husband. Tom says that Jean's husband has guessed how Tom feels about Jean. But Jean was never unfaithful and he wants her husband to know that. Madge begs Tom not to take things out on Shane - she doesn't believe that Shane drank too much - he was hoping to get a chauffering job that evening. She says that Tom has to take Shane's word and help him - he's going to need someone and it should be Tom.
Shane is sitting devastated. Clive is on the phone to his lawyer - he says that Shane has a good case, but only if he can find the bloke who gave him the slug of brandy. If not, Shane could get 5-7 years for manslaughter (now there's a cheery thought!)
