Number 22
Piper's home early from her date with Cassius because she spilt a drink all over herself, but Terese keeps blocking her from going into the laundry. Piper eventually asks her mum why she's acting weird and Terese lies and says she's hiding her birthday present in there. Happily accepting this, Piper leaves her stained shirt with Terese and heads off to bed. When the coast is clear, Terese unlocks the back door for Leo to make a hasty retreat.
Number 24
David heads off to work the night shift while Elly and Mark settle in to watch the first episode of Doctor Who.
ELLY: How many episodes are there?
MARK: Well over eight hundred.
ELLY: ... And we're watching them all?
MARK: Yeah! Well, not tonight but we'll get through them.
Chloe arrives home from a disaster date, moaning about her boring clients now people in the hotel are a no-go zone. Mark kicks her out of the lounge room so he can enjoy his night with Elly, but Mishti stops by and interrupts them anyway to tell Mark that Monique got in touch with her.
The Waterhole/Penthouse
Karl and Susan are searching for Jemima in the pub but can't find her. Karl's worried she'll never speak to him again but Susan urges him not to jump to conclusions.
Jemima pops into the penthouse to see Paul but Amy's the only one home. Amy's surprised when Jemima informs her she won't be buying into Robinson Heights and she's leaving town. She was only here to get to know Karl but "that no longer matters".
Karl wants to keep the search going but Susan reminds him Jemima's not answering his calls or messages. Susan's proud Karl stood up to his sister because she needed to hear his words for her own sake and she'll be back when she's cooled off. Karl certainly hopes Susan's correct.
Amy gently says to Jemima that Karl must mean something to her if she's stuck around this long, but Jemima's hurt that Karl spoke to her in such a blunt fashion. She doesn't know why she'd throw herself into his orbit if he's going to treat her so shabbily.
Number 24
Mishti says that Monique wants to help with Dilhan and that she can be here quickly. Mark takes this as a good sign that Monique's close by and says Mishti should organise to meet up with Monique tomorrow. Elly worriedly says that perhaps they should get Mishti's cop colleagues involved and Mishti admits back-up would be good. But Mark's worried Monique might get wind of their plan if she's got corrupt mates in the department and bolt.
Number 22
Piper heads downstairs for a drink of water but curiosity gets the better of her and she starts snooping in the laundry for her birthday present. After opening a few cupboards and the washing machine and coming up naught, she spies a gold cufflink with a blue circle on it laying on the ground and gets a knowing smirk on her face.
Number 28 Backyard
The next morning Susan finds Jemima sitting outside and tells her how worried she and Karl were when she took off last night. Jemima's somewhat surprised by this.
SUSAN: Are you still doubting how much he cares? He has loved everything about having you here. The stories, the music; even destroying the lounge room with hammers.
JEMIMA: I care about him too. It's probably why I was so badly behaved yesterday. No one has ever pooh-poohed my money before.
SUSAN: He wasn't rejecting you.
JEMIMA: Well I'm not used to it. The people in my life always want a handout and saying yes or no is the only power I have.
SUSAN: Like with Trudy.
Jemima sadly says they were like two peas in a pod but then everyone else started sniffing around her cash and she thought that's all she was good for. Then she started fighting with Trudy and admits they haven't had a proper conversation in a very long time.
SUSAN: Jemima you have been so happy making a family with Karl, and yet you've got somebody out there who I'm sure would love nothing more than to reconnect with her mum.
JEMIMA: It's too late.
SUSAN: It's not; it's never too late. You've got so much more to offer Trudy than just your money.
Jemima appears as though she's considering Susan's advice.
Harold's Café
Piper's regaling Cassius with her detective escapades last night, showing him the cufflink she found and declaring that her mum was hiding a man and not her birthday present.
CASSIUS: Couldn't this be Ned's?
PIPER: No, Ned does not own any French cuff shirts. I highly doubt he even knows what they are. But mum's secret boyfriend obviously does!
CASSIUS: Why's it such a big deal if she's dating someone?
PIPER: No, no, no, the question is why is she hiding him?
Cassius thinks Terese might want her privacy and Piper says she's not going to out her mum - but there's no harm in doing a little digging. Elly and Mark grab a coffee but Mark's in an apprehensive mood because of the whole Mishti and Monique thing. Elly says it's not too late to call the meeting off, or let the cops know, but Mark doesn't want Monique to do a runner.
ELLY: This is so risky, and frankly I don't get why you're putting yourself on the line over this.
MARK: I just think if I can help bring down Monique then it might convince the bosses to give me a second chance.
ELLY: Do you want to go back on the police force again?
MARK: More than anything. And if I have to risk my safety then so be it.
ELLY: What about Mishti's?
Mark looks conflicted.
Police Station
Mishti looks at a wanted flier of Monique while also scoping out her colleagues; concerned that one of them could be a snitch. She pats her gun in her holster, reassuring herself that she's got this and she's ready to confront her ex pal.
Terese's Office
Chloe's put on the spot when Piper stops by to show her the cufflink she found and to ask if Terese has got a secret boyfriend. Piper sees some flowers on the desk and goes to check the card, but Chloe admits they aren't from Terese's boyfriend.
PIPER: (grinning) So she does have a boyfriend.
CHLOE: Doesn't Terese have the right to date someone and not tell you? Especially if he makes her happy.
PIPER: You know who it is.
CHLOE: I know she's dating someone, and yes, she wants to keep it private.
PIPER: Even from me?
CHLOE: She may be your mum but that doesn't give you a free pass into every corner of her life. Have you noticed how upbeat she's been lately?
PIPER: Yes I have.
CHLOE: Well then let her have this. She'll have her reasons for keeping it under wraps.
Number 28 Backyard
Jemima calls Trudy and is quite nervous at first but then starts to have a genuine conversation with her, asking after her grandson Jasper and the other kids.
Lassiter's Complex
Jemima has a coffee with Karl and Susan out the front of the hotel and apologises for her behaviour last night. She then admits Karl was right when he said she was her own worst enemy. She's let money influence her life for far too long but it's going to stop now. Jemima tells them she's not buying into Robinson Heights but it's not because she doesn't want to be close to Karl.
JEMIMA: I would love to get to know you better but first I have to fix things with my daughter. (She shares a smile with Susan) Trudy and I had a long chat and it was lovely. So I want to spend some proper time with her and the grandkids. I'll be flying to Boston to stay with her for a while.
SUSAN: Jemima that's wonderful.
JEMIMA: And if it goes well maybe I'll reach out to the other kids. Who knows, maybe even our half-siblings!
KARL: I'm very happy for you. Of course I'm going to miss you like crazy!
JEMIMA: Oh you!
She reaches out to take his hand and then takes Susan's as well, giving them a squeeze.
Terese's Office
Terese walks in with Leo and is happy to see flowers on the desk but changes her tune when she realises they're from Paul congratulating her on getting Pierce Greyson to the hotel. Leo asks when "the VIP" guest arrives and Terese says next week, but adds that the flowers are just Paul's unsubtle way of reminding her not to stuff up the business deal. Leo doesn't look too sure about that.
Chloe finds them and candidly says the two of them need to lift their game because Piper's got Leo's cufflink and is on the scent of Terese's secret boyfriend.
LEO: You didn't say anything, right?
CHLOE: Well I didn't say it was you.
TERESE: Oh what, you confirmed that I was seeing somebody? You said that you'd cover for us!
CHLOE: Don't blame me for your sloppiness! I kept your secret but Piper wasn't going to let it go. I had to give her some part of the truth or she would have gone off and asked someone else... Like Paul.
Chloe leaves Leo and Terese to mull things over. Leo asks if Terese would want to tell Piper the truth. Terese isn't sure but thinks she could come up with a compromise.
Number 22
Terese tells Piper that she knows about her conversation with Chloe but she's not annoyed with Piper's snooping. Terese admits that if the roles were reversed she'd be feeling sad about Piper keeping things from her. Piper understands and says Terese doesn't have to tell her anything, but Terese grins and says she wants to.
TERESE: So I'm seeing somebody and it's all very new. It started around the time of Aaron and David's wedding.
PIPER: Since then?!
TERESE: Yeah I know I'm sorry, I didn't plan for it. And I never meant to deceive you.
PIPER: So all those times you were working late...
TERESE: I was with him.
PIPER: (smirking) Wow. So is there a reason why you didn't want to tell me? Like he's not married or anything is he?
TERESE: Oh god no.
PIPER: You know I'd never judge you, mum! I don't care who you date as long as he treats you right.
TERESE: Yes, well, he does. And look, he's very different for me. It's still early days and he's got a lot of considerations.
PIPER: Like?
TERESE: Well, y'know, reactions from his family. It's complicated.
Piper promises she won't pry anymore. If her mum's happy then she can wait. Terese smiles and says she is happy.
Lassiter's Complex
Karl and Susan bid Jemima a fond farewell out the front of the hotel. They share a big hug and Jemima thanks them again for pulling her into line and making her see sense.
SUSAN: You would have got there... eventually.
JEMIMA: She is a sass pot!
KARL: Don't I know it.
Jemima hops into an awaiting car and gives them a gift wrapped present before she heads to the airport. They wave her goodbye and Karl scrutinises the gift, joking that it could be a gold bar.
Number 32/Erinsborough Hospital
Mark's walking Mishti through their plan to grab Monique when David rings Mishti from work. David's just discovered his new patient is Dilhan and it looks as though he's been pretty badly beaten up. Mishti relays the news to Mark, looking ill.
The Waterhole
Karl and Susan open up Jemima's present and can't help wondering if it's something extravagant, but when Karl unwraps it he finds a tram toy. They read the note inside that says, "Just like the one I used to ride with dad". They can't help but be a tiny bit disappointed at first but then realise it's a lovely sentiment and reaffirms their connection with Jemima and the Davies-Smythe name.
Terese's Office
Chloe wraps up a meeting with Terese and Leo but has a surprise for them - she's booked them a night on the boat under a false name. Leo and Terese are happy but tell Chloe that she didn't have to do that for them. But Chloe just smiles and says that she wanted to as "life's too short not to make the most of it", then smirks at Leo.
CHLOE: Maybe you want to throw those cufflinks overboard while you're there?
When Chloe leaves, Leo glances at the flowers and tells Terese he didn't have a chance to speak to her about them earlier.
TERESE: I think I know what you're going to say.
LEO: You do?
TERESE: Look, Paul isn't concerned with making me sweat over some VIP. This is his way of reasserting his interest in me.
LEO: Yeah, well, snapdragons aren't exactly subtle are they?
TERESE: It doesn't matter. Paul wants us snapping at each other for fun but I'm not going to engage.
LEO: He'll be disappointed.
TERESE: Well he'll have to deal with it. From now on there's nothing less than professionalism. I'm not going to give him anything that he can take the wrong way.
LEO: And if he keeps sending flowers?
To answer Leo, Terese picks up the flowers from her desk and unceremoniously dumps them into the bin.
Erinsborough Hospital
Mishti and Mark find David and ask about Dilhan. David says he's about to go into surgery and that Dilhan told the police he fell but he was definitely assaulted. He'll probably need a full knee reconstruction. David heads off to prep for surgery just as Dilhan's wheeled past. He mutters a pitiful "I'm sorry" to Mishti on the way. Mishti looks horrified when she gets another text from Monique that says 'You're welcome'.
MISHTI: What have we done? This is all our fault.
