- Gary is in deep debt after his car full of stolen laptops is itself stolen
- Leo refuses Paul access to Warnie the wombat
- Warnie later goes missing, and a ransom note for $1,500 is left at the scene of the crime
- Paige and David agree that he will pretend to be her baby's father
- Lauren guesses that David is the baby's father; Paige confirms it, and Jack is there to overhear
No 32
The awkwardness continues where we left off, as Lauren declares that she didn't realise Paige and David were seeing each other. Paige says they're not; it was just a one-night thing. Jack walks out, and Amy follows. Brad asks why David and Paige didn't tell them sooner that David was the father.
DAVID: My family's very conservative. I was worried about how they'd react.
BRAD: What, so you were happy for Paige to go through this on her own?
PAIGE: No, Dad, that's not it!
BRAD: Well, why has it taken this long for it to come out?
DAVID: It's true. It's taken me until now to feel comfortable with coming forward.
Ned asks if David intends to support Paige through the pregnancy; he says he does. Lauren and Brad go to get a drink, and Paige quietly apologises to David for their reactions. He says it's fine.
In the garden, Amy is asking Jack if he knew Paige and David were involved. He replies not. Amy's surprised at the pairing, and says it must be uncomfortable for Jack given how much he cared about Paige.
JACK: It's fine. I just wouldn't have picked David either.
AMY: It's none of my business, obviously. It's just - you know I really liked David. I was kind of under the impression that he wasn't into women. I guess he just wasn't into men.
Amy tells Jack not to put on a brave face just for her benefit. He says he's not.
JACK: Paige's baby is nothing to do with me.
Paige is listening through a nearby window, and looks upset.
Erinsborough Backpackers
Turmoil ensues as Warnie the wombat's disappearance inexplicably enrages Leo's customers.
LEO: Some of the guests are complaining. They only booked with us so they could pet and feed the wombat.
Aaron suggests they call the police, but Leo insists he doesn't want them involved as he doesn't want his new business to turn into a crime scene. However, he says he can't afford to pay the ransom to get Warnie back either. To make matters worse, Aaron finds out that Lassiter's is holding a sportsman's lunch with a load of celebrity cricket-players.
AARON: They have Shane Watson, Damien Fleming and Meg Lanning.
LEO: Guess we know who stole Warnie, and brought in the real cricketers.
Leo's convinced Terese and Paul are behind the wombat's disappearance.
AARON: Why would they bother asking for a ransom? They'd just make Warnie disappear for good.
LEO: All I know is, someone's trying to ruin my business - and those two are at the top of the list.
Robinson's Motel
Piper is braiding Tyler's hair! They kiss a bit, then play cards.
No 32
Jack comes into the house again, looking for Amy - but finds Paige. He says he didn't realise she and David were dating.
PAIGE: You don't need to date to make a baby, Jack.
Jack replies that she never talked about David, either.
PAIGE: I don't really talk to you about those kind of things, because we don't have that type of relationship.
JACK: Don't we?
PAIGE: You really want me to talk to you about a guy that I'm seeing?
JACK: No -
PAIGE: You've got your life. I've got my life. And they don't really overlap.
JACK: I guess not.
Paige adds that she could have done a lot worse than David as her child's father.
PAIGE: He's a good person. We get along. We'll make it work.
JACK: In that case, I'm happy for you.
PAIGE: Thanks.
Jack leaves. Paige looks sad.
Lassiter's Complex
Paul and Terese meet Extra Special Guest Starstm Shane Watson, Damien Fleming and Meg Lanning. Paul explains who they are for the benefit of Terese and other cricket-shunners (like your trusty summariser). They have ostensibly been invited to speak at Lassiter's for a kids' charity, but from Terese's reaction it's implied that this was just a ruse to get them there!
Once they're gone, Terese says she had to get the cricketers to come, as Jasmine Udagawa was breathing down her neck about her lack of Australia Day events.
TERESE: Oh, by the way - did you know her grandfather, Toshiro Udagawa, used to own the motel?
PAUL: No, did he really?
TERESE: Yeah, back in the mid-eighties apparently, Well, that's what she said.
PAUL: So that must have been right before he invested in the Robinson Corporation.
This exposition dispensed with, Leo arrives on the scene and demands to know where Warnie the wombat is. Paul and Terese don't even attempt to keep straight faces as they openly mock his concern for the missing marsupial. He threatens to go to the police, but Paul and Terese deny all knowledge. Leo says it's not over, and storms off.
Once he's gone, Terese asks Paul if he took the wombat. Paul says he didn't, but would love to shake the hand of the person who did. They wander off, laughing.
No 26
We learn who the real wombat-snatcher is - Gary! He has Warnie wrapped up in a blanket in the shed, with plenty of food and water.
GARY: I'm sorry about all this. I wouldn't have done it, but - I'm desperate.
WARNIE: ...
No 32
David is turning meat on the barbecue, while Jack sulks nearby. David talks a little more to Brad and Ned about his family; they're very conservative, he says, but also hypocritical because his mother wasn't married when she got pregnant with him and Leo.
DAVID: We're the family scandal.
BRAD: So what about your dad?
DAVID: I've never known him.
BRAD: I'm sorry to hear that.
DAVID: My mum spent most of her life trying to make up for the mistake. Which is one of the reasons I'm so determined to make sure this baby has a dad.
BRAD: That's good to hear.
Jack listens, fuming. Ned welcomes David to the family.
Meanwhile, Lauren comes into the kitchen to check on Paige. She asks when Paige fell pregnant, wondering whether it was around the time of her boxing match with Angelina and her resulting injuries (which is how David and Paige met). Paige doesn't challenge this version of events, and also confirms that she's not interested in having a relationship with David.
PAIGE: We're good the way things are.
LAUREN: I wish I'd been as mature when I was pregnant with you.
PAIGE: You were scared.
LAUREN: Yeah, I know. But I still should've told your dad instead of covering it up. It would've saved a lot of heartache down the track. But everything happens for a reason, right?
PAIGE: Hope so. Cos I did not imagine my life would turn out like this. I imagined meeting someone, settling down, and getting married. I know I wasn't ready to have kids with Mark, but I kind of imagined it would be with Jack.
Lauren apologises for the way Jack found out about the pregnancy, and says he must have been really thrown. But she adds that he'll get used to the idea, since he and David are friends. Paige looks thoughtful.
Robinson's Motel
Tyler and Piper continue their card game. (If it's anything like their hair at this moment, it's probably Snap.) Just as the game starts to get a little physical, there's a knock at the door. It's Paul.
PAUL: Good afternoon, 'Ms Ford'. And friend.
PIPER: How did you know?
PAUL: The moment the front desk told me that a Clementine Ford checked in. Of course I knew it was you.
Paul says they have to leave, as Terese would not like them being here together. Piper objects that they haven't done anything wrong.
PAUL: In that case you just wasted 150 bucks, didn't you?
Paul turfs them out.
Lassiter's Complex
Terese is impressed as Paul explains how he worked out Piper and Tyler were at the motel.
PAUL: Oh, come on - you know Piper's always banging on about her feminist hero, Clementine Ford. Gosh, she even named your cat after her!
TERESE: You know, the things you remember astound me.
Wrongfooted slightly by the compliment, Paul says he's told his staff not to accept any more bookings from Piper and Tyler.
The Extra Special Guest Starstm appear again. They've heard from the assembled media that they only got invited to the event because Warnie cancelled.
DAMIEN FLEMING: That's not like him!
PAUL: No, he didn't cancel - he was actually kidnapped.
MEG LANNING: Warnie's been kidnapped?!
DAMIEN FLEMING: Do the police know?
SHANE WATSON: What about his kids?
TERESE: No, no, no - sorry, no. Not *the* Warnie. No, Warnie the wombat. The backpackers' mascot.
DAMIEN FLEMING: That's terrible - poor little guy!
SHANE WATSON: I'm sure they'll get him back safe and sound.
DAMIEN FLEMING: Yeah, but who would do that? A little wombat? What's the world coming to?
MEG LANNING: Harden up, Flemmo!
DAMIEN FLEMING: It's a little wombat!
Paul shoos them back inside, and he and Terese plot as to how to link Leo to the negative media coverage...
No 26 / Lassiter's Complex
Gary is practising using a voice distorter gadget, in preparation for a ransom call to Leo.
LEO: Leo Tanaka speaking?
GARY (deep voice): We have your wombat. Do you have the $1,500 dollars?
LEO: Yeah, I'm working on it.
GARY (deep voice): Put the money in an unmarked envelope, and leave it at the payphone outside Grease Monkeys in two hours. You'll get directions to Warnie once the exchange has been completed.
Leo complains that it's not an exchange unless he gets Warnie straight away. But Gary says Leo will just have to trust him.
LEO: Says the kidnapper. I mean, how do I even know that Warnie's still alive?
GARY (deep voice): Well, I'm not gonna harm a wombat, am I? I mean, what kind of sicko would do that?
LEO: The same kind of sicko that would kidnap a baby wombat in the first place!
Gary insists Warnie's safe and well-fed, but that if Leo wants to see him again, he'll make sure the money is there. Leo hangs up, and Gary wipes sweat from his brow.
Erinsborough Backpackers
Amy is filling Aaron in on the paternity of David's baby. Aaron says he could have sworn David was gay, but says he could still be bisexual, or 'sitting on the fence'. Leo emerges and starts having a go at Amy; Aaron explains that someone kidnapped Warnie and that Leo thinks it was Paul.
AMY: There's no way my dad would bother kidnapping someone's novelty mascot!
Leo moans that if he doesn't get Warnie back he'll 'lose dozens of bookings'.
LEO: People want to take pictures with the wombat! It was our unique selling point! This could shut us down.
Amy looks worried.
No 26
Amy has summoned Paul.
AMY: Where's Warnie?
PAUL: Oh, not you too?!
But Amy is convinced Paul has taken the wombat, and demands he return it.
PAUL: I have no idea where the stupid creature is. And quite frankly, I resent the accusation, thank you.
AMY: Come on, Dad. Who would it be, then?
PAUL: Well, the way Leo conducts himself, the queue forms to the left.
Paul leaves. Once he's gone, Gary comes in, and Amy asks him whether he thinks Paul would have stolen the wombat. Gary plays down the possibility.
GARY: Your dad's never struck me as an animal person.
AMY: I'm not suggesting that he wants to keep it!
Amy is worried that Leo will struggle financially if he pays the ransom, and that he could be ruined if he doesn't due to cancelled bookings (!) - so considers giving him some of her own savings as a loan. Gary tries to talk her out of it, but because Amy's convinced her dad is involved, she is keen to bail Leo out.
No 32
Jack, who is drinking alone by the pool, accosts David when he emerges from the house.
JACK: Have you told her? She deserves to know.
DAVID: Everything I said to you was in confidence.
JACK: So you're gonna lie to her? Pretend to be someone that you're not?
DAVID: I was confused when I came to see you. Now I'm not. Anyway, Paige and I aren't a couple. We agreed on that.
JACK: You know it's not that simple. Being around her as the baby's dad, you're gonna be more involved. What if she falls for you?
DAVID: It's not gonna happen.
JACK: And how do you know that?
DAVID: Because ever since I've known Paige, she's only had eyes for one person. I don't think that's gonna change.
David walks back inside, and Jack downs his beer, before fetching another.
In the house, Piper has arrived. She hugs Paige, and welcomes David to 'our crazy family'. At that moment, Brad comes in and starts ranting at Piper for hiring out a motel room with Tyler. She says they just wanted to spend some time together in peace, but Brad tries to make her promise never to do it again.
PIPER: I can't do that.
BRAD: What?
PIPER: Well, how else are we supposed to see each other?
BRAD: Your mother and I, we're not gonna back down on this.
PIPER: Well neither am I! Tyler and I love each other, and there's nothing that you can do or say that's gonna change that!
Ned tries to calm them down. Jack comes in, and announces he's going.
Ramsay Street
Gary gets out of his car, and sees Jack leaving No 32, looking upset. Gary asks if Jack's okay.
JACK: I didn't know what to say. I -
GARY: To who?
JACK (upset): I messed up.
GARY: It happens to the best of us.
JACK: I'm a priest! I'm supposed to - I dunno if I've got what it takes.
Noticing how upset he is, Gary offers to take him home.
Erinsborough Backpackers
Amy turns up with a bundle of cash for Leo, so he can pay Warnie's ransom.
LEO: Why?
AMY: Honestly? I feel sorry for you. What you're doing is brave - starting something from scratch, it isn't easy.
LEO: I can't take this.
AMY: Can you not be an idiot? I'm trying to be a friend, and help you out.
But Leo explains that he doesn't need the money, because Warnie has been miraculously returned! Someone dropped him off ten minutes ago while Leo was fetching something from his car. Leo says it was probably never about the money - theorising that Paul and Terese just wanted Warnie gone while their sportsmen's lunch was in progress. Amy says Paul denied it, but Leo isn't convinced.
Changing the subject, Amy again puts her foot in it by commenting on how excited Leo must be at the prospect of being an uncle.
LEO: What?!
Amy explains that Paige has revealed David as the father of her baby.
No 32
Leo appears in the back garden to confront David.
LEO: You want to tell me what's going on? What's this about Paige and a baby?
DAVID: Well, it's pretty simple. We were together, she got pregnant - we're having a baby.
LEO: David - if this is something you feel like you need to do for -
DAVID: I don't feel like I need to do anything.
Suddenly, Piper storms out of the house, followed by Brad.
PIPER (screaming): You don't listen to anything I say! You have no respect for me, Dad. You don't listen to my opinion -
BRAD: Okay. Clearly, we're not gonna resolve this. Why don't you go home to your mum, and I'll come over later.
PIPER: No, that's not my home.
BRAD: Of course it is.
PIPER: No, Dad - it stopped being my home when you and Mum stopped treating me like a human being!
She storms off - but Leo, smiling, has an idea and runs after her.
Erinsborough Backpackers
Leo shows Tyler and Piper into their new home! He's reserved a room just for them on the mezzanine. He says they can stay rent-free, as long as they pitch in with manning reception and repairs. Piper and Tyler are thrilled, but warn Leo that he may get some backlash from Piper's parents.
LEO: Don't worry about that. I can handle a little bit of heat.
Leo grins as Tyler and Piper rush off to their new room.
