Ramsay Street (morning)
Kyle is loading his ute, and sees Georgia coming up the street, obviously returning from a night out. She claims she wears the dress for jogging, but then admits she's been out "with a friend". Kyle is not impressed and asks if she's been drinking. She says only water. But her friend had helped.
GEORGIA: He made me realise I need to say yes.
KYLE: Yes to what exactly?
GEORGIA: To life.
Chris comes out, and Kyle sarcastically quotes what she said. Georgia walks off, upset. Kyle says that she's moved on and it's time he did too.
No 30
Toadie's arrived back early.
TOADIE: I couldn't stay away from my beautiful cranky little daughter. (Pause) Or my cranky wife.
He offers to look after Nell so Georgia can sleep but she says she's fine, so he decides to catch up with Steph. He's surprised that she hasn't kept in contact.
Harold's
Steph is just talking to a customer when Toadie comes in to talk to her. She is short with him, and says she has an appointment. He offers to help, and she says there is a lot of gossip. He says she has friends, and apologises for losing touch. She doesn't want to trawl over the past, but asks him to let her know if he knows somewhere she could live. She leaves, but then turns to congratulate him on Nell, and gives him a hug.
Lassiters lake
Lucas has told Steph about the cancer, and how he's terrified it might have spread. She tells him to have faith: his chances are good. He's worried about Vanessa. Steph tells him that he has to put him own needs first. She advises him not to tell Vanessa until they know what they're dealing with.
Lucas and Vanessa's flat
Vanessa tucks Patrick in, then picks Lucas's jacket up, and the ring box falls out. She opens it, and gasps with delight at the diamond ring. She stuffs the box back in his pocket.
Charlie's
Toadie tells Sonya that Steph was too busy to speak to him. She says she has to be at the nursery every day until she gets new staff. She's not keen on putting Nell in childcare, so they might have to sell the business. Toadie says he'll try to sort something out at his work. Sonya asks if he's going to quit. He says no, but there has to be some compromise.
Hospital
Steph is thrilled that Lucas's results show the cancer hasn't spread. She tells him once he's had the surgery, he'll be OK. He says he'll listen next time she says to have faith and they hug. She offers to buy him lunch, but he wants to tell Vanessa. She suggests waiting until he gets a date for surgery. She promises to support him, reminding him that she's been there. But he says he's waited long enough.
Lucas and Vanessa's flat
Lucas asks Vanessa to sit down, and tells her about the cancer, saying the prognosis is good. She's stunned and wants to know how long he's known. She tells him they're going through it together, and he admits it was a mistake not to tell her. She sobs, and hugs him.
Lassiters Complex
Georgia is pushing the buggy, and passes Chris, who asks if Nell is wearing her down. They chat a bit about Nell, then she apologises for making him feel the break up with Scotty was his fault, when it wasn't.
CHRIS: Breakups suck.
GEORGIA: No, the way that I treated you sucks.
She says that last night helped, but tells Chris she's not seeing Pete, and he can pass that on to Kyle. Chris says she should tell him. She says when they talk, it never works out. She does want them to be friends and will find a way to make it happen.
Nearby, Ajay is looking at a sign on an office which says "For Lease".
No 30
Ajay suggests to Toadie that they should set up a law practice together: they can choose their hours, their clients, as well as cutting down their journey time to work. Ajay leaves and Sonya tells Toadie it's a great idea. Toadie tells her he'll think about it.
(Later)
Toadie is working, and Sonya tells him that's why Ajay's idea is so good. Toadie sighs, and says he'll try to find a way to cut down his hours. Sonya stomps off, saying she wanted him to do what was best for everyone. He follows her, and explains that if he was representing local people, they'd be putting their lives in his hands.
SONYA: This is about Steph.
TOADIE: When I lost that case, she lost everything.
Sonya points out that Steph killed someone, so there had to be consequences, but Toadie is adamant that he failed. Now he works in mergers and acquisitions, if he loses, the client goes home. Sonya looks pensive.
Outside Charlie's
Sonya goes up to Steph and says it's good to see her. Then she wants to ask a favour, which surprises Steph. She says that Toadie is carrying a lot of guilt from the trial, and since it wasn't his fault, he needs to hear that from her. Steph agrees. Sonya leaves, and Vanessa and Lucas walk up with Patrick. Vanessa wants to talk about her shifts, since Lucas has got cancer. Steph acts like she hasn't heard about it, and when Vanessa goes to get some milk, they agree to keep it simple.
No 30
Georgia pushes the buggy in, and says that Nell's just settling - that is until she bumps the buggy into the wall. Sonya asks who she went out with, but Georgia says it someone she doesn't know. While Georgia is preparing a bottle for Nell, her phone rings, so she asks Sonya to take it. She pokes around in Georgia's bag and finds the bag of tablets. She takes the call - it's Pete - and tells him Georgia will call him back. She asks Georgia what's going on.
Charlie's
Toadie is picking up some cake. Steph comes in and he tells her that he doesn't argue when Sonya has a craving. Steph cuttingly says she gets what she wants. Toadie is puzzled.
STEPH: If you've got a problem with me, you come to me. Don't send your wife to do your dirty work.
TOADIE: I didn't send Sonya to do anything.
STEPH: That's funny. She asked me for a favour. I'm supposed to sit you down and tell you I forgive you for botching my defence. Well I don't.
Toadie tries to explain how he's been over it in his head, and how he's been feeling guilty. Steph says he should try 2½ years in jail.
STEPH: Sharing a cell with cold- blooded killers. Seeing the sun from a barbed wire fence.
At first she thought she deserved to be in there, but when she saw the types of people who were there, she knew she didn't belong with them. Toadie should have got her off because she was sick.
STEPH: I didn't just lose my freedom in there. I lost Charlie. I lost everything that ever mattered to me, and I will never, ever forgive you for that.
Tears well up in Toadie's eyes and he leaves.
