No 22
Sheila hammers on the front door to try and get Naomi to open it again, but to no avail. She tries the window!
SHEILA: Everything's locked! I will wring her neck!
SUSAN: Maybe we should just make ourselves comfortable and wait it out? She's got to come back eventually.
SHEILA: I have no intention of spending a second longer here with you than I have to!
SUSAN: I understand this is awful, and I'm sorry. But I'm sure she's only gone to these extreme lengths because she cares about you.
SHEILA: I know what it looks like when you wheel out that principal- speak and start managing people. Well, you can't manage me!
SUSAN: I'll just sit here and be quiet until she comes back.
SHEILA: Huh! Best idea you've had in years!
Harold's Café
Kyle asks Naomi how long she plans to leave Sheila and Susan locked in for; she replies, as long as it takes!
KYLE: Are you sure Gran's not gonna go full Canning on her?
NAOMI: Don't worry, I told Terese to hide the knives.
Roxy comes in for some milk. She doesn't know Naomi, and assumes that she's a new romantic interest for Kyle!
ROXY: Way to play the field! Does Jess know about your latest conquest?
KYLE: Nomes, this is Roxy (...) Roxy, this is Nomes, my auntie.
ROXY: ... It's so nice to meet you!
After shaking hands with Naomi, Roxy beats a hasty retreat!
NAOMI: Who's Roxy?
Chloe, Aaron and David are with Claudia (and baby Aster), presumably discussing their plans for turning Murder Island™ into a haven for disadvantaged kids. David notices some boxes in the middle of the room and asks if Claudia's still unpacking; she says they're some files she had flown in from Switzerland. Chloe makes a mental note of this.
Claudia admits Aster hasn't been feeding well, and Chloe asks if she's still being given Elly's breastmilk. Claudia says yes, but that there isn't always enough, so she's topping her up with formula. They're about to wrap up the meeting, but first, Claudia wants to show Chloe an environmental report. She retrieves this from a locked filing cabinet.
Again, Chloe mentally notes that Claudia keeps a key on her person for the cabinet, and appears to be formulating a plan...
Lassiter's Complex
Mackenzie, Harlow and Hendrix are having a coffee; It's Mackenzie's eighteenth birthday, and she is stressing about her party tonight, as she's worried no- one will show up - or that everyone will show up and think it's lame.
HENDRIX: Impossible - *I'll* be there!
Harlow and Hendrix are jealous that Mackenzie is turning eighteen first; she'll be able to go clubbing, get her driving licence, and...
HARLOW: You can vote.
MACKENZIE: Ooh, yeah!
Hendrix pretends to fall asleep at the mention of this last point! Roxy comes out with a slice of birthday cake for Mackenzie, giving her a birthday hug and explaining it's a 'taste tester' for the party later.
David and Aaron turn up, and tell the teens that Claudia has offered to pay them cash for their further input on the plans for Murder Island Haven For Disadvantaged Kids™.
HENDRIX: More money means more alcohol for tonight!
ROXY: Only for the girl that's legal.
Nearby, Chloe is with Pierce. She's about to head to the prison to see Elly, and Pierce reminds her about their meeting with Paul and Terese later. Chloe's distracted noticing a nearby Claudia walking with Aster's pram, and there's a sense of mild annoyance from Pierce, given Chloe missed the last meeting. She kisses him, and promises to be there.
No 22
Sheila and Susan are still locked in, and the atmosphere's still frosty.
SUSAN: I need a cup of tea. Can I get you one?
SHEILA: Don't do me any favours.
SUSAN: (martyred sigh)
SHEILA: And you can drop the injured party act, too, while you're at it.
SUSAN: That's not what I'm doing.
SHEILA: If someone knocking back a drink is the worst thing you have to deal with, you are doing fine.
SUSAN: ... I'm not doing fine. This has been the worst time of my life.
SHEILA: Oh, so your son's dead, too, is he? (!)
SUSAN: No, I just meant that -
SHEILA: The way you carried on at grief group, when you gatecrashed it, you'd think he was! Talking about pain, and asking for forgiveness! How dare you?!
SUSAN: Sheila, I'm so sorry. I'm truly sorry, about Gary, about Finn, about everything!
SHEILA: Save it. I told you I would never forgive you, and I meant it.
Harold's Café
Karl and Bea have come in, and Kyle tells them Susan and Sheila are hopefully sorting things out - unaware that Naomi hasn't told them of her plan to lock them in together!
KARL: You did what?!
NAOMI: I was gonna tell you... but I didn't.
KARL: Because you realised it was a terrible idea? (...) This is the last thing that Susan needs!
Karl rushes off to emancipate Susan!
No 22
A tearful Sheila is on the couch, and Susan comes into the living area to join her.
SHEILA: Leave me alone.
SUSAN: I don't expect you ever to forgive me. And I would never compare my pain to what you must feel about losing Gary.
Susan cautiously sits next to Sheila.
SUSAN: I didn't express myself very well earlier, or at the grief group. It's nowhere near the same. But I do feel as though I've lost something.
SHEILA: What? Finn?
SUSAN: ... Trust. Trust in... in myself... in other people.
Susan becomes tearful herself.
SUSAN: Anything I did, I did because I wanted to help. And I don't think I'll ever dare do that again. Elly's in prison, Aster's with Claudia. Bea could've died. So could Harlow, so could Toadie.
She bursts into tears.
SUSAN: And I know there's nothing I can say that will ever bring back Prue, or Gary. And I'm to blame for all of it! So much loss - for all of it. And now I feel as though I've lost one of my closest friends too.
As Susan breaks down, Sheila's visibly very upset, and gingerly offers her the box of tissues she's been drying her own eyes with. Karl and Naomi have appeared at the back door, but seeing that Susan and Sheila are making progress, they slip out again, unseen.
SHEILA: I think we could do with that tea now.
Goodwood Prison
Chloe is visiting Elly, and telling her about Claudia giving Aster formula. Elly's disappointed, as she'd wanted to breastfeed for as long as she could, but the stress of prison has affected her milk supply. Elly wonders if maybe Aster should be weaned. Chloe gives her a hug, and tells her Aster will be okay.
Chloe also tells Elly about the filing cabinet in the penthouse; she thinks there are bound to be some personal papers in there. Elly advises Chloe to look for anything with Sam Fitzgerald's name on it, to give them a clue about anything Claudia might be planning. But Elly tells Chloe to be careful. Chloe takes her hand.
CHLOE: I will. If it means I can find something to help you, it's worth it.
The Waterhole
Sheila is at a table with Naomi and Kyle.
NAOMI: Am I forgiven?
SHEILA: Well, I wanted to throttle you at first, but I do understand why you did it.
KYLE: So, does this mean things are good with Susan?
SHEILA: Well, 'good' is really stretching it a bit, but we did talk (...) I suppose I accept now that she hasn't had it so easy.
Kyle and Sheila thank 'irritating aunt' Naomi for her intervention, and she says she'll stick around for now, as her 'unconventional wisdom is obviously needed here'!
Paul and Terese come in, and Sheila cracks a joke about them putting her under house arrest! Terese apologises for tricking Sheila but remarks that she looks more at peace now. Paul thanks Sheila for not trashing the house!
Naomi follows Paul and Terese to the bar, and explains she'll be sticking around in Erinsborough - so asks if there's any work going at the hotel. Terese seems mildly perturbed given Paul and Naomi's history as a couple.
NAOMI: I think you will remember I was the events manager at the hotel?
PAUL: Yes, who could forget your crowning achievement, the Erinsborough Festival? Where Harold nearly took out half the crowd?
NAOMI: Well, that's what you want - an events person just making memories!
PAUL: That's one way to spin it.
Naomi is playfully pawing at Paul, which Terese visibly doesn't appreciate! But she agrees to keep Naomi in mind in case anything comes up work- wise.
Lassiter's Complex
Susan has convened with Karl and Bea, and is telling them about her chat with Sheila, for which she's grateful of having had the opportunity.
SUSAN: I just feel like a bit of a wreck now, that's all.
Claudia appears with Aster in the pram. Susan asks if she can have a cuddle (presumably from Aster, not Claudia!) as it's been a rough day. But Claudia's visibly tired herself and doesn't want a sleeping Aster woken up. Bea says that surely a peek wouldn't hurt.
CLAUDIA: I said no. Susan's a parent. She remembers how difficult it can be.
BEA: Yes, Susan does remember! She was dealing with it herself until you rode in!
CLAUDIA: I beg your pardon?
BEA: Don't pretend you care about what's best for Aster! If you did, you wouldn't have stolen her away from us!
Karl gestures to Bea to stop, and says apologetically to Claudia that they've had a rough day. Aster has woken up and is now crying.
BEA: Sorry, Claudia.
CLAUDIA: So am I. Excuse me.
She walks off briskly.
The Waterhole
Naomi, Kyle and Sheila are still at a table, when Hendrix and Harlow appear, and ask them if they need to discuss anything prior to Mackenzie's party. Kyle says he has it all covered, and tells them to be there on time to help. They promise to see him later.
Kyle thinks the party will be easy to organise, but Naomi and Sheila go to lengths to remind him that eighteen- year- old girls are notoriously picky about their parties. He begins to look worried.
Roxy turns up and asks how Sheila is, saying it's good to see her. Sheila replies that she's better than the last time they saw each other (and argued about the pigeon)! Roxy smiles and leaves. Naomi asks Kyle if he's sure nothing is going on between him and Roxy.
SHEILA: What? Kyle and Roxy? Oh, he's not her type! She only goes for blokes who are old enough to be her father.
Kyle looks worried...
Chloe creeps into the penthouse, and finds that nobody's home. So she makes a beeline for the filing cabinet, and picks the lock, before raiding Claudia's files. The first document she finds is an invoice 'for services rendered' from Weiler & Perkins, Sam Fitzgerald's law firm.
The lift pings, and Aaron appears. He explains he was just with Claudia, who sent him to fetch one of Aster's toys, and wants to know why Chloe is poking about!
CHLOE: ... I needed a copy of the environmental clean- up thingy!
AARON: Right, okay. So, what, you just let yourself in?
CHLOE: Look what I found! Claudia said she only contacted her lawyer about custody after Susan had her breakdown. Check out the date on this first invoice. It's before Elly even went to jail! (...) That means Claudia was gunning for Aster from the moment she got to town. And that makes me wonder if she knew about her lawyer's history with the Kennedys. She used the bad blood to her advantage.
Aaron wants to go and talk to Claudia about this. Chloe gets a message from Pierce, saying their meeting has started - so she rushes off, telling Aaron to put the invoice back and not to say anything to Claudia.
When Chloe gets to her meeting, Paul, Terese and Pierce are unimpressed that she's late. Paul in particular is not happy that she's letting her duties slide because of her new project with Claudia; she hasn't been at work all day.
CHLOE: This juggle will only be for a little while longer, I promise.
TERESE: But, Chloe, it shouldn't be a juggle at all.
CHLOE: You're right. I'm sorry.
Pierce suggests they could hire somebody to look after Chloe's duties for the next few weeks, until the Murder Island™ project is further along.
PAUL: Not that I want to support plugging holes because somebody can't manage their workload... but yes, there is somebody that we could ask. She's qualified, and she's looking for work.
PIERCE: Well, who's this?
PAUL: Sheila's daughter.
TERESE: (sighs)
PAUL: She used to manage promotions here.
Chloe suggests she meet with her ASAP and sort it out.
Harold's Café
Susan, Karl and Bea come in; Susan tells Bea not to beat herself up about shouting at Claudia. Bea admits she lost it because of the way Claudia treated Susan. Susan says Claudia's an easy person to lose patience with, but Karl reminds them both to bear Elly and Aster in mind.
KARL: We can't afford to rub Claudia up the wrong way.
SUSAN: Not all of us are finding it easy to roll over on this, Karl.
KARL: Claudia could find a reason to change our visitation roster for Aster. Worse, she could do the same thing to Elly. We have to keep Claudia happy.
BEA: Okay. It won't happen again.
Mackenzie comes in, and everyone wishes her happy birthday.
BEA: Are you excited about the big bash?
MACKENZIE: If, by excited, you mean 'about to pass out from the anxiety', then yeah, I'm pumped!
Mackenzie asks for a quick chat with Susan, and they go aside for a minute.
MACKENZIE: So, did you go ahead with the counselling?
SUSAN: Uh, yes - yes, I did. Thank you for that. It's good to have a sounding board. I'm looking forward to our appointment, too (...)
MACKENZIE: Yeah. Umm, I actually wanted to talk about when to have my gender affirmation surgery. I can legally do it now, but I just wanted to get the timing right, in case it affects my studies this year.
SUSAN: Oh, that's why you were so keen to have a meeting. I'm so sorry I brushed you off.
MACKENZIE: Oh, well, you didn't know.
Susan offers to talk about it now, but Mackenzie says it can wait till their scheduled meeting. Mackenzie also mentions being 'flat out' with the Murder Island™ focus group meetings with Claudia. Susan's surprised; she wasn't aware the teens were helping Claudia, but suppresses her annoyance and says it sounds 'very useful'.
SUSAN: And you enjoy your birthday!
Susan looks concerned as Mackenzie walks away.
Lassiter's Lake
Claudia is with Aster on a picnic mat, and Aaron returns with the toy she asked for - and the file Chloe asked him to put back! Aaron shows her the invoice, and claims he found it 'poking out' underneath the cabinet. Claudia's suspicious and annoyed, saying Aaron shouldn't be going through her files. But he asks her about the date on the invoice.
Claudia placates Aaron with a spiel about how she got Sam to backdate the invoices for accounting purposes, to save her some tax money. She never lied to any of them about her intentions as regards custody of Aster, she insists.
AARON: It's just, you know I'm really good friends with the Kennedys, and Elly. So I can't work with you unless we're both being completely honest.
CLAUDIA: I understand that. The invoice was just a little white lie to save me some money. But with everything else, I am absolutely on the level.
In the office, Chloe gets a text from Aaron, saying that he's spoken to Claudia and that the invoice is 'legit'. There's a knock at the door - it's Naomi, come to talk about the temporary work they have for her.
NAOMI: I'm surprised we haven't met yet - I know your brother, Mark. Well, I knew him... quite well!
Chloe says she's just got back from his wedding in Adelaide; Naomi seems pleased for Mark that his dream has come true. They get to talking shop; Chloe says they need an events manager for the next few weeks, while she's busy.
CHLOE: I'd be thrilled to have you, if you're okay working under someone with less experience?
NAOMI: Well, that depends. How much of a tyrant are you, on a scale of one to... Paul?
CHLOE: If you survived Paul, you'll find me a walk in the park!
NAOMI: I'll take it!
Chloe tells Naomi her first assignment is to go and hang out by the rooftop pool, to see if she can find some events inspiration up there.
NAOMI: Alright. Well, when we're both off the clock, the margaritas are on me!
CHLOE: You're on!
Chloe smiles as Naomi leaves, liking her already.
Lassiter's Complex
Kyle is seeking advice from Sheila about how to ensure Mackenzie's party is sufficiently glitzy. He's worried after what she and Naomi said that the party's going to be a dud. Roxy is working nearby, and Sheila suggests Kyle take her for the night to help.
KYLE: Nah, I don't need Roxy.
ROXY: I'm already going.
SHEILA: Oh, perfect. Now you can go, and get paid - isn't that great?
KYLE: Gran, I can handle this. Don't worry about it.
SHEILA: Roxy, I think you should do this as a favour to me, because you were so rude about Gary.
ROXY: Fine.
SHEILA: Problem solved!
Kyle forces a smile, but neither he nor Roxy are happy about this...
Ramsay Street
Susan is unpacking her car, when Sheila appears and offers to help.
SUSAN: I've got it - but thank you.
SHEILA: ... You know, my daughter can be a real piece of work when she wants to be. But I am kind of glad that she went rogue this morning.
SUSAN: Me too. Maybe we could have another cup of tea together soon?
SHEILA: Yeah... Not in a locked room!
SUSAN: Agreed!
A pigeon flies over and craps all over Susan's car!
SHEILA: Gary! It's his way of saying that he forgives you.
SUSAN: ...
Across the road, Paul and Terese are disembarking from their car; they've just had the news that Naomi's on board at the hotel. Terese is clearly displeased. Paul says they can 'pull the pin' if she's feeling uncomfortable about Paul and Naomi's history.
TERESE: Yeah, look, it's one thing that Naomi's in town. It's another thing you're working so closely together. I mean, I trust you, but - Naomi? Married men have always been like catnip to her.
Lassiter's Rooftop Pool
Pierce is swimming in the pool. As he climbs out, Naomi perves on him from behind the safety of her sunglasses! Then a look of recognition crosses her face.
NAOMI: Pierce Greyson?!
PIERCE: Naomi! Wow, I haven't seen you in... years!
