A road somewhere
Jack gets back into the car with Paige, reasserting his claim that he just went to clear his head. Paige now decides that she wants to go and find out what's going on between Mark and Louise, saying that sitting in the car is killing her.
The meeting point
Louise demands that Mark give her the bag of money, but he's hesitant to comply without any more than her word that she'll tell him where Gabe is.
MARK: Take me to him, and you'll get the money.
LOUISE: And the passport?
MARK: ... I didn't have time to get one. But there's an extra $5,000 in here, and contact details for someone who can.
Louise becomes agitated, convinced that Mark is setting her up.
MARK: Louise, you're asking me to trust you! But it goes both ways!
A road somewhere
Jack is trying to convince an increasingly frantic Paige to stay in the car, reminding her that the last time she intervened, Louise ended the phone call with Mark.
PAIGE: I just need to get close enough to make sure Gabe is there!
JACK: We need to leave it to Mark, okay? Just like you said.
The meeting point
Mark is trying to convince Louise that going on the run for the rest of her life isn't the solution. She insists she doesn't have any other options. Mark tries to approach her, but she warns him not to come any closer, or it'll be the last he sees of her and Gabe.
A road somewhere
Paige can't take the waiting anymore, and leaps out of the car. Jack gets out and runs after her, calling for her to wait.
The meeting point
Mark is still trying to sweet-talk Louise.
MARK: This is not the person you really are. You've been manipulated by Hamish. Pushed into doing things you wouldn't usually do. Louise - you're not to blame! Remember I said I could get you a deal? I can arrange immunity for you. All you have to do is turn yourself in, and tell us where Gabe is.
LOUISE: Immunity from everything? Including Russell?
MARK: If that's what you want.
LOUISE: Keep your deal. Just give me what I came here for. You've got five seconds or I'm out of here. Then neither of us get what we want.
Mark agrees, and reluctantly puts the bag of cash on the floor. As Louise picks it up, a police response team, including Mishti and Jet Cassidy, emerges from the trees - followed closely by Jack and Paige. A tearful Louise attempts to escape, but the police apprehend her.
Lassiter's Complex
Mishti unloads Louise in the car park. Mark, Paige and Jack, who have followed the police car back there, rush over - and Paige frantically asks Louise where Gabe is. Louise is not in a cooperative mood, believing that Mark betrayed her by calling the police.
PAIGE: Please tell me that he's not on his own!
LOUISE: As if I'd say now!
As the police extras bundle Louise towards the station, Mark angrily confronts Mishti, saying he had the situation under control. She replies that he shouldn't have been involved in the first place. Mishti promises that they'll get Louise to tell them where Gabe is.
Paige is upset, believing it's her fault for getting out of the car. But Mark says the police are to blame for intervening when they did, adding that he can't understand who would have tipped them off. Paige glances over towards a guilty-looking Jack, wondering if he is to blame.
Paul's Penthouse
Amy asks David how his chat went with Aaron. He says it was awkward but that they both apologised and he now feels like they're back on track.
DAVID: And we also agreed that no-one is ever to speak of the proposal again!
Amy jokes that she had a few dance moves in mind for the next one, but David is ruling both costumes and questionable dancing out of his next proposal, if there is one.
AMY: At least it hasn't put you off doing it again.
DAVID: No, it's actually done the opposite. It's made me realise how much I want it. But I am content with how things are.
But he hopes one day they'll have a wedding, and a home together, and maybe even kids - terrifying though that idea is. Amy thinks David and Aaron would be incredible dads.
Erinsborough Police Station
At the entrance, a furious Paige asks Jack whether he was the one who called the police.
JACK: Yes, I did.
PAIGE: You messed everything up, Jack!!
JACK: Oh, keep it down!
PAIGE: Why didn't you come to me first?!
JACK: You wouldn't have listened!
PAIGE: I would've said that we were gonna stick to the plan, because the police were gonna ruin everything - and now look what's happened!
Jack implies Paige is equally to blame for 'running off like a maniac'.
PAIGE: If Gabe isn't found, it's your fault.
JACK: My fault? You are the reason why he's missing in the first place!
PAIGE: ...
JACK: I shouldn't have said that.
PAIGE: You can't take that back. It's clearly what you've thought this whole time.
She walks off, as Jack looks anguished.
The Flametree Retreat
Rory has turned up for some massage advice from Amy, following his back injury. Susan comes in as they're talking, having arrived for her yoga session. Amy praises Susan's 'pretty strong back bend'.
SUSAN: Karl has always said that I'm very bendy.
AMY: That's her husband.
RORY: Lucky him!
During the conversation, Rory manages to convince Amy of both his yoga knowledge and his people skills - because by the time Susan's gone in for her class, Amy is all but offering him a job as a yoga instructor at the retreat.
She suggests he send in his CV. Rory thanks her, but says he isn't planning on staying in town for long. Amy gives Rory her card, in case he has second thoughts. There appears to be some mutual flirtation going on, too...
AMY: Who knows? Maybe I'll get lucky, and you'll change your plans!
RORY: Maybe!
Lassiter's Complex
Aaron is updating David on the latest regarding Gabe's kidnapping. Aaron admits he's feeling useless, both in the Gabe situation and as regards Tyler's likely prison sentence. David takes Aaron's hand and says that he's here for him, no matter what he needs, to help him help his family.
AARON: That means the world to me.
But when Rory appears nearby and waves at them, Aaron is quick to hurry David - who recognises Rory from their hospital encounter - towards work and out of the vicinity. Rory looks annoyed that Aaron has ignored him.
Harold's Café
Mark is on the phone to Tyler, telling him and Piper not to worry about helping further with the search, given that they're Not In This Episode™. Sonya comes in; she's heard the news about Gabe and asks how everyone is. She also shows Mark the notepad she found on the boat, with the name and phone number of Tom Bartuccio.
Mark appears to be taking down info from the note on his phone, and says it could be Louise's handwriting. Sonya's on the way to take the note to the police station in case it's relevant, and Mark agrees it's a good idea.
Erinsborough Police Station
Mishti is interviewing Louise.
MISHTI: What condition was Gabe in when you left him?
LOUISE: ...
MISHTI: Is there anyone with him now? Caring for him?
LOUISE: ...
MISHTI: Has he received any medical attention? You know, you're not doing yourself any favours. It's best you speak up now, otherwise things will be far worse down the track.
LOUISE: I want immunity.
MISHTI: That is not going to happen.
LOUISE: Mark Brennan said he could organise a deal.
MISHTI: Mark Brennan was dismissed from the force a week ago. He was in no position to offer you anything. He didn't tell you that, did he?
LOUISE: What can you offer me?
MISHTI: How about some advice? If anything happens to Gabe, you won't have a leg to stand on. Do you know what happens to people in prison who have harmed children? If I were you, I'd start talking.
Mishti leaves Louise to her thoughts, and exits to the waiting area, where Paige accuses her of not trying hard enough to get Louise to crack and tell her where Gabe is.
MISHTI: Paige, I know you're upset...
PAIGE: Upset?! There is no word to describe the way that I am feeling right now. And if you hadn't come and interfered, maybe I would have my baby back!
Paige asks Mishti if she can talk to Louise.
PAIGE: If she can look me in the eye, and see what she has done to me - that taking away my child is killing me... Maybe if she hears what I have to say, she can find it in her heart to tell me where he is. Please - please! Maybe I can get through to her!
Mishti relents, and allows Paige back into the interview room to speak to Louise.
PAIGE: I asked if I could come and talk to you. Actually, it's a bit more than talk. I've come to beg. Do you have kids?
LOUISE: ... I wanted to. But every time I thought I'd found The One™, they let me down.
PAIGE: Like Hamish? I think we've all become a victim of his. But I do not think that you are a bad person. How can you be? You're a nurse! You care about people - you don't want to hurt people. And I don't think you really wanted to hurt me either. But taking Gabe - he's just a baby. And the thought of him being alone, and sick... If anything happened to him, I don't think I could cope!
Emotion is creeping onto Louise's face, as Paige continues to beg.
LOUISE: I'm so sorry about all of this. I really am. But for once in my life, I'm gonna put myself first. I'm sick and tired of being taken advantage of. So I'm gonna do what I can to get out of this mess - and to do that, I need leverage. And that leverage is your son.
Paige continues to sob, as Mishti abruptly ends the interview. Meanwhile, Sonya has arrived in the waiting area with the note from the boat.
Erinsborough Hospital
Mark is talking to David about the note Sonya found. He says he's tried calling the number on it for Tom Bartuccio, but it went to voicemail - so he tried searching the name on Facebook, and found that David was friends with someone of the same name. David explains that Tom is a nursing unit manager at the hospital, but went overseas for a family emergency a couple of months ago.
David says it's possible that Tom would have worked with Louise at the hospital, and recalls that he put up a flyer on the noticeboard before he left, advertising for someone to take over the lease on his flat. Mark looks at the flyer, and sees that the address is in the same apartment block as Louise's; David explains that quite a lot of the staff live there. Mark takes the flyer and leaves.
The Waterhole
Rory is having a drink at the bar when Aaron comes in and greets him.
RORY: So I'm good enough to say hi to now?
Aaron asks after Rory's back injury, apologising since it was sustained at The Shed. But Rory says that his massage at the retreat helped, along with some painkillers. Aaron also thanks Rory for not saying anything to David about their past relationship, or their recent catch-up in Paris.
AARON: The only reason I didn't say anything is because nothing happened, right? It was a non-event.
RORY: Then why the need for this whole Secret Squirrel routine? Unless your subconscious is trying to tell you something?
AARON: What?
RORY: Maybe you wanted the non-event to be a major event?
AARON: No!
RORY: Yeah.
AARON: No! Look, I made a mistake because I didn't tell David in the first place. So if I bring anything up now, it's just gonna look suss. So can you do this for me?
RORY: It's a bit naughty... Dunno how comfortable I feel about this.
AARON: Wait, do you think *I* feel comfortable about this? Come on - with everything I've got going on in my life right now, this is just gonna be one thing that I don't have to worry about. So can you please just do this for me?
Rory agrees that he'll keep quiet, and Aaron thanks him. They shake hands, and Aaron leaves. Rory watches him as he goes, looking conflicted.
The Flametree Retreat
Shane is having a meeting with Amy; apparently undeterred by the recent Diwali disaster, he's trying to flog her a urine-powered generator for the retreat! He tells her it fits perfectly with the Flametree's brand (which may or may not be a compliment!), and that they could cut their electricity bills by at least a third.
AMY: Who knew urine could be such a money-saver?
She promises to put in a good word with Steph for him.
AMY: As long as I'm not the only one having to top it up!
SHANE: Nah, just put Jimmy to the task! Boys his age, they love a bit of target practice - just give him plenty of water!
Shane heads off to set up the generator for a test-run, and Rory arrives as he leaves. He's brought his CV for the yoga teaching job, announcing to Amy that he's decided to stay in town. Amy says that, subject to setting up a call with Steph, the job will be his. Rory also asks if he can rent a room at the retreat; Amy says she's sure they can sort that out. She's still flirting with him.
AMY: Out of interest, what made you change your plans?
RORY: Let's just say there's now something worth sticking around for!
Harold's Café / Apartment Block
Paige and Jack sit at a table in silence, both still tense and emotionally exhausted. Mark calls Paige from the apartment block where Louise and Tom Bartuccio were living, and fills them in on the note that Sonya found. He explains that Tom's apartment is currently empty, and that he thinks Louise took down his details from the flyer in case she needed a place to hide.
Mark says that he's already passed this info to the police, but suggests Paige might want to come and check out the flat herself first. She immediately agrees, and asks for the address.
Once they've finished the call, Mark goes to the apartment in question - which does appear to be the place we saw Louise with Gabe earlier in the week. He finds the door open, and nobody apparently there - but sees an empty makeshift crib on the floor, full of soft toys. He looks worried.
