- Xanthe calling herself stupid and deciding to leave school
- Susan convincing Xanthe to do another round of work experience at the hospital
Number 26
Xanthe's dressed for work experience but isn't feeling all that confident. Sheila has her sorted though. Not only has she ironed Xanthe's clothes but she's also left three encouraging notes in her pockets (minus a small mix-up with her grocery list) for Xanthe to read whenever she's feeling down. Because, as well all know, "Cannings are made of tough stuff."
Erinsborough Hospital
Jack updates David on Mannix's condition (stable) and also tells him that Leo regrets pressuring David and wants to make it up to him. David isn't in a forgiving mood, however, and can't just forget the emotional blackmail Leo used against him.
Xanthe walks in looking quite timid and apprehensive. Karl gently asks if she's sure she's ready to start work experience again, but Xanthe nods and says she wants to move forward with her life. Karl says he's assigned Xanthe to shadow Nurse Kriptic for the day, but looks concerned for Xanthe when she walks off.
Number 22
Paige finishes up a phone call with Lauren when Elly arrives at the door, dressed like she's off to the races instead of visiting a winery in the middle of winter. Paige looks a bit put out by how much effort Elly has gone to for her outing with Mark.
PAIGE: Are you sure you're not trying to impress Mark?
ELLY: Why would you say that?
PAIGE: I don't know. I just don't want you guys to get hurt. You're both kind of on the rebound.
ELLY: I love you for caring, but we're mates.
Elly gifts Paige with breast pads and eye cream as a thank you for the tickets, then heads outside where Mark and the courtesy bus are waiting. Paige watches them through the window, not looking too happy with how chummy they're acting.
Harold's Café
In true Shane Rebecchi style, he's having a good old chinwag to Sheila about what furniture to purchase for her kitchen instead of doing café work. Dipi shoos him outside then proceeds to sit down herself and chat to Sheila about Xanthe. Sheila's concerned about Xanthe, but she doesn't want to call Karl and check up on her in case it plants seeds of doubt in Karl's mind. Dipi says she went through a similar thing with Yashvi when she bought illegal fireworks from a softball teammate. Dipi then made Yashvi return them. Sheila asks how Dipi was sure Yashvi went through with it, and Dipi smiles at her. (Spoiler alert: she spied on her).
Winery
Elly and Mark are taking a nice stroll through the vineyards in the very scenic Yarra Valley region.
MARK: Hey, did you know there are five major steps to wine?
ELLY: Buying, opening, pouring, drinking... regretting?
Mark continues to regale Elly with wine facts, amazed that he hadn't thought to ask his mum more about the process considering she works at a cellar in Adelaide. Meanwhile Elly's like, 'Yo, Wikipedia, ease up on the facts and enjoy the moment. P.S. why am I not three wines into this non-date already?' They decide to head to the cellar door, because that's what Paige would choose, and Elly wants to honour Paige's gift to them.
Erinsborough Hospital
Karl sees Xanthe busy working, and Xanthe smiles and says she's using her own initiative. Clive Gibbons tells Karl about a discrepancy with the drug counts - some morphine has become unaccounted for in the past twenty-four hours. Karl's concerned but says last night was crazy busy and there should be a reasonable explanation for it. Meanwhile, David's skulking in the background looking mega guilty.
Later, Clive sees Sheila lurking around the hospital corridor and is amused when she tries to think up an excuse for being there. He's charmed, though, when she admits she's there to keep an eye on Xanthe. Clive likes that she's protective of her family and gets a bit flirty with her, suggesting there could be 'another' reason for Sheila to be around the hospital.
Harold's Café
Sheila tells Dipi that Clive asked her out on a date. It's just lunch at the hospital canteen, but it's made Sheila a bit flustered. Dipi says it must be a gift from the universe, which makes Sheila excited because that statement was very close to what she wrote on one of Xanthe's notes.
Paige and David are catching up for a coffee date, but David's not the best company because he's stressing. He gives Paige a vague outline of his dramas - a moral dilemma that could end up hurting other people. Paige asks if he can hold his breath and see how it pans out, but David says the waiting is doing his head in. Paige says she can relate.
PAIGE: I kind of opened the door for something to happen between a friend and another friend. And I feel weird about it... I think.
DAVID: Can you talk to them? Tell them how you feel?
PAIGE: I don't want to mess them around. Plus, I'm not even sure I've got a problem with it.
DAVID: Well then I guess you've got two options. You can hold your breath like me, or try to push past it.
Paige is like, '... is there a third option?'
Winery
Mark is still banging on about wine facts. Elly's looking like she'd rather be there with Drunk!Jack. She encourages Mark to just chill and "free his mind", demonstrating this by doing some oddball ballerina twirl. Then she encourages Mark to do the same.
ELLY: (laughing) Now what are you thinking?
MARK: I'm thinking I look drunk.
ELLY: Not yet, but the day is young my friend.
They hold hands and walk off, with Mark uttering "the things we do", which could very well be an actor adlib, because those twirls were dorky as hell. Good thing they've got plenty of wine to accompany that cheese.
Lassiter's Complex
Jack's on the phone to Leo, encouraging him to just give David more time, when he sees Paige out the front of Harold's. They share a smile but by the time Jack's finished his call, Paige and the pram have disappeared.
Erinsborough Hospital
Karl's chatting to Nurse Kriptic about the missing drugs, and she plants the idea in his head that it could have been Xanthe since she's been in the room where it happened all day. Karl's not so sure Xanthe would've had anything to do with it, but decides to have a chat with her in his office to suss things out. David appears at the end of the scene again, just in time to feel more guilty when he sees that Xanthe's in the firing line.
Number 22
Paige is moping over a photo on Instagram of Elly and Mark at the winery when Jack stops by to say hello. He spies the breast pads on the table and picks them up.
JACK: These things, ay? I was meant to get you some.
PAIGE: Do you even know what they are?
JACK: ... No. But I should. I need to give you guys more attention, I'm sorry.
Paige wants to clear the air between them and Jack says he wants her to forget what he said at the party.
JACK: You're the mother of my child and I will always care about you. But I also understand why you shut down the idea of us ever getting back together. And I agree.
PAIGE: (surprised) You do?
JACK: You and me, there's always something in the way. What we had, it's gone, and there's no real way to recapture that. So why don't we just put it behind us?
Jack goes to check on Gabe while Paige takes another look at the Insta photo on her phone. She agrees with Jack and says that he's right; living in the past never works. "Let's just move on."
Winery
Mark tells Elly she's not the first person to tell him to lighten up but it's an occupational hazard - he likes asking questions and getting answers. Elly says he should try and learn to keep his work and social life separate.
ELLY: I had to learn the hard way - twice. I made it OK for Angus to see me as a friend and a teacher, and Xanthe as well. Guess that's why she thought it was OK to become friends with Finn.
MARK: You're not responsible for the way that Finn behaved.
ELLY: Yeah but I should have given her a stronger sense of boundaries between the student teacher relationship. Maybe then she would have seen the situation differently.
Elly apologises for over-sharing but Mark says it's nice getting to know her better. They share a gooey-eyed moment before they realise they've missed the bus home and have to call a taxi. Mark tells Elly not to worry about Xanthe, "I'm pretty sure she's going to be OK."
Erinsborough Hospital
Cut to an outraged Xanthe in Karl's office: "You think I stole drugs?!" Yeah you can cross psychic off your alternate career list, Mark. Karl says he's not accusing Xanthe of anything; he just wants to know if she saw anything suspicious. But the small semblance of confidence Xanthe had built up during the day has been destroyed and she remains on the defensive until Karl tells her that she should just go home.
David sees Xanthe storm out of Karl's office and chats to Karl about the missing drugs. David doesn't believe Xanthe would have stolen them, but Karl says regardless of that, Xanthe's not in the right frame of mind to be working at the hospital.
Number 26
Sheila asks Dipi a very important date-wear question: to Spanx, or not to Spanx?
DIPI: Personally I can't stand the things myself. It feels like you're being shrink-wrapped.
Sheila admits that she just wants to look good because she hasn't been on a date in ages. The last serious relationship she had was with Russell Brennan, and since that didn't end well she's been scared to put herself out there again. Xanthe arriving home in a foul mood interrupts their conversation. She tells Sheila that Karl sent her home after blaming her for something she didn't do.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sheila has stopped by to ask Clive to have a word to Karl about his accusations towards Xanthe before she finds Karl and throttles him. But Sheila's in for another rude surprise when she discovers that Clive stands by Karl's decision to send Xanthe home.
SHEILA: To think that I was at home deciding on shapewear for our date! You are not worth a daggy pair of tracksuit pants!
CLIVE: Sheila...
SHEILA: If you're a gift from the universe, the universe can take you back!
Sheila storms out leaving Clive a wee bit embarrassed. Oh, and you guessed it, David's there standing in the background looking guilty again.
Ramsay Street
Paige (with Gabe strapped to her) is putting something in the bin when she sees Mark and Elly stumble up the pathway across the road. Elly's shoeless and holding hands with Mark, both of them laughing and teasing one another. Gabe starts crying and Paige sighs and says, "I know, kiddo. I've just got to stop thinking about it."
Erinsborough Hospital
David pops in to see Clive, who thinks he's there because he witnessed the scene with Sheila.
CLIVE: I like fiery women, but to have her rip into me at my workplace? I mean colour me embarrassed.
DAVID: Really, it's fine.
CLIVE: I know Sheila's a bit barmy, that's part of the attraction, but she is hard work. I guess you've got to be up for the challenge.
David says Sheila was only being protective of Xanthe, but Clive reasons that Karl was only doing his job. Someone is definitely accountable for the missing drugs.
DAVID: I know, but it wasn't Xanthe.
CLIVE: I appreciate you wanting to give her the benefit of the doubt.
DAVID: There is no doubt. Xanthe had nothing to do with those missing drugs.
CLIVE: How can you be so sure?
DAVID: Because I know who is responsible... Me.
Clive is stunned.
