The Waterhole
Aaron rushes in to tell Amy about his Moment™ with David at the hospital - but before he can, he sees that David's already arrived for his 'date' with Amy.
DAVID: I didn't realise you were coming!
AMY: He's just going!
David encourages Aaron to stay for a drink, but Aaron makes an excuse to go. He tries to make warning gestures at Amy as he leaves, but she shoos him out.
Cue titles.
Afterwards, we return to The Waterhole, where Sheila, Terese and Leo are having a staff meeting. Sheila boasts that she's binned all the brochures for Luxe Balloons (the firm whose balloon crashed) following the accident. While saying the firm wasn't at fault, Terese agrees it's a good idea they distance themselves from them!
It appears Lassiter's has been instrumental in booking in customers for Luxe flights, so Leo is keen to find an alternative 'memorable experience'. (If Lauren's hen party balloon ride, wasn't memorable, I don't know what is.) Sheila suggests food vouchers for the pub, but Leo is thinking more upmarket - and suggests a cruise on the Yarra instead.
SHEILA: That sounds like a big fat waste of time to me.
Terese smiles as she gets a text from Gary, inviting her to Room 208 for a 'date' tonight. She then sides with Leo, and asks him to liaise with the chef to create a special menu for the cruise.
We cut to David and Amy, who are playing pool. She explains one of the reasons she moved here was so Jimmy and Paul could have a relationship.
AMY: Guess that backfired.
DAVID: Families are frustrating. But it's better than no family at all.
AMY: Are you close with your great grandma?
DAVID: We've always had a good relationship. But it's Leo who struggles. Hiibaachan thinks he's all surface, not to mention a player.
AMY: Yeah, well, she's not wrong.
Leo is watching them from his table as they play.
DAVID: There's more to Leo than what most people think. Although he does have a thing for fancy women. Or any women at all.
AMY: And what about you? What kind of women do you like?
DAVID: I've always been too focused on work to think about it. But I don't go for too much glitz.
AMY: That's good to know.
Encouraged, Amy continues to play, while Leo sighs at his table.
Erinsborough Hospital
Mark has brought Nell in to visit Steph in hospital. He explains Jacka's made a full confession about the hot air balloon sabotage, and combined with his existing charges it should put him away for a very long time. Mark proceeds to tell Nell a thinly-veiled story about Steph rushing to the balloon party's rescue.
MARK: Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess, whose friends were in danger. So she got on her steed, and raced after them to rescue them - without thinking about herself once. Because the princess was very brave, and very selfless.
No 26
Toadie and Gary are preparing to go on another fishing trip, made possible as Steph 'more or less' kicked out Toadie from the hospital, now she has Mark and Sonya there. He claims he needed some guy-time anyway.
GARY: Everything alright with the missus?
TOADIE: Erm, well... Sonya has agreed to help Mark and Steph out with a baby. She's gonna be a surrogate.
GARY: Woah, that's a huge call.
TOADIE: I've agreed to it too. Steph is my best mate. I also know what it's like to have problems conceiving, but - well, when they said no, I was pretty relieved (...) I started to think of Sonya with the preggy belly, and I got the warm-and-fuzzies, mate.
GARY: I thought you guys were done having kids?
TOADIE: ... Well, I don't even know if it's possible with IVF, so there you go.
Gary says that with the right doctor, these things can happen - and offers to refer him to a specialist in The City™ who helped some friends of his. Before Toadie can answer, Gary gets a text from Terese, saying 'How about right now?' He tells Toadie that he's been called into work - more or less.
TOADIE: Terese?
GARY: Yeah, it's back on.
TOADIE: Looks like I'm going fishing by myself then, eh?
Harold's Café
Xanthe is disappointed that Sheila hasn't been practising the questions she's given her in preparation for Family Feud.
XANTHE: We need to make sure we win for Erinsborough - they need a good news story!
But Sheila says she's too busy with work to think about it, and starts moaning to Xanthe about Terese's new 'whizzkid consultant', Leo, and how she always sides with him.
SHEILA: It's not just me. You should see the way she's treating your father. She's got it in for us Cannings.
XANTHE: I don't hear Dad complaining about it.
SHEILA: Well, that's because he's too wet! I'm gonna have to give her a piece of my mind.
XANTHE: Good idea! Just do it nicely.
SHEILA: What's that supposed to mean?!
XANTHE: Well, sometimes, when you're very passionate about things, your emotions tend to get in the way. And before you know it, you've punched someone in the face!
SHEILA: That happened once, and it was just a little slap!
Xanthe tells Sheila to write down some bullet points in preparation for talking to Terese.
Lassiter's
In Room 208, Gary is lying on the bed in his undies while Terese prepares to head back to work following their TITTNL™ session.
GARY: Limber ladybird strikes again!
TERESE: And again, and again!
GARY: What can I say? I'm happy to see you.
TERESE: I can tell!
Gary says he's glad Terese didn't go on the balloon ride. She kisses him, and says she has to go.
GARY: You don't want to stay and try the variation?
TERESE: Gary Canning, you're a very bad man.
GARY: They've let me out of jail, so I might as well make myself useful.
Just as Terese is heading to Harold's to look after things in Lauren's absence, she encounters Sheila in the corridor - and Gary is forced to dive behind the bed and hide his clothes!
Sheila walks into the room and begins giving Terese a telling off for spot-checking the rooms as reception has told her she's doing, given that Gary's a 'very hard worker' and wouldn't neglect his responsibilities. Gary watches from behind the bed as Terese tries to get rid of Sheila, but Sheila pulls out her bullet-point notes, and continues giving Terese a ticking-off!
SHEILA: I feel that our working relationship has become extremely dysfunctional.
TERESE (distracted): Mm-hm.
SHEILA: And I feel that you've been taking your employees for granted - particularly myself and Gary.
Terese tells Sheila she has her undivided attention, and turns her away from the door, giving Gary a chance to dart out of the room, still in his undies! He yelps when he sees Leo walking down the corridor, and waits till he's gone before dashing for the lift...
Erinsborough Hospital
Sonya comes to see Steph, who's up and about but still attached to a drip. She says Mark's gone to entertain Nell, having barely left the room since Steph's been here - adding that she's not used to all the attention. Sonya says it's OK to be adored by someone.
SONYA: I hope this makes you realise he's not going anywhere.
STEPH: Yeah. And I know he loves me. And I love him. You should've seen him with Nell.
Steph becomes upset, saying Mark's meant to be a dad - then apologises, saying it's the combination of the balloon accident, the medication and Regan's death that's making her emotional.
Lassiter's Complex
Gary leaps out of the bushes, still in his undies, to try and catch a taxi home - but he just misses it as it drives off! He hides again as he spots David and Amy walking towards him. David is telling Amy about how he'd like to work overseas to help people in war-torn countries. Things become awkward as David's about to head up to his apartment.
AMY: I had a really good time.
DAVID: I didn't bore you to death?
AMY: No!
DAVID: You got my whole family history!
AMY: You were fine.
DAVID: I don't usually talk this much!
AMY: Well, why not?
DAVID: Guess I don't always relate. Leo's the outgoing one.
AMY: I think we could talk for hours without running out of things to say.
DAVID: Me too. I had a really good time.
AMY: ... I used to clean in my lingerie for money!
DAVID: Excuse me?!
AMY: I was out of options, and it was the only way I could look after my son.
DAVID: Okay!
AMY: And that stuff about religion earlier? I think I'm serious about being a Christian!
David laughs bewilderedly.
AMY: I'm sorry. But I really like you, and I don't want these things to get in the way.
David leans in and kisses her on the lips, then heads upstairs. Amy smiles.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sonya finds Mark with Nell in reception. Mark gets a text from Lucas, who apparently has assumed that Steph has told Mark everything about meeting Adam. It says, 'Adam's on the plane home. Next time I'll come alone - make sure we catch up.'
MARK: Adam? Who's Adam?
Sonya goes quiet, but makes out that it's nothing. Mark quickly realises that the text is referring to Steph's son, and Sonya admits he was in town. Mark's surprised that Steph didn't tell her about meeting Adam.
MARK: Why would she keep this from me?
SONYA: I'm sure she had her reasons.
MARK: Yes, which she's also keeping from me. Son, I can't support her if she doesn't trust me.
Sonya encourages him to talk to Steph about it, then leaves with Nell.
Harold's Café
Amy is updating Aaron on what she regards as a successful date with David. Aaron talks it down as a 'gab-fest', but then Amy reveals that she and David kissed. Aaron's surprised, and asks if there was chemistry.
AMY: I'm not gonna go into the gritty details!
AARON: Oh, come on!
AMY: He was the perfect gentleman.
AARON: Hmm.
AMY: What?
AARON: Amy, when David looked at my wrist, we had a Moment™. And I think maybe he's just being a gentleman because he is *into* men.
AMY: That is ridiculous.
AARON: No, hey! I got a Vibe™!
AMY: Let me get this right - he takes care of you, and you get a feeling? That is not a gay Vibe™ - that is Florence Nightingale Syndrome! People fall for their doctors all the time!
AARON: I am not falling for him! You're the one falling for him. Amy, I just don't want you to get hurt. Especially if he's not even that into you!
AMY: Well, your gaydar needs a tune-up! Because when we kissed, there were sparks. And you can't fake that.
Aaron looks dubious.
The Waterhole
Mark and Tyler are at the bar. Mark's realised that Steph arranged to see her son a few days after he said no to the surrogacy idea, and says it can't be a coincidence - otherwise, why would she hide the fact she saw Adam?
TYLER (mimicking Mark): He's going into detective mode. He's got a hunch.
MARK: Steph's a complicated woman with a lot of baggage. If she's not honest, I can't read her - I don't know what's going on (...) It just seems like every time we're in a good place, the issue of kids and family comes up. Why can't it be enough, just the two of us?
TYLER: You've always wanted kids. Even since before you learned about the birds and the bees. You used to wheel around the neighbour's cat in a pram.
MARK: It was overweight.
TYLER: And when Aaron and I came to Erinsborough, we needed someone to sort us out. Who do you think stepped up?
MARK: Well, someone had to look after you two knuckleheads.
TYLER: Bro, you were born responsible. You'd be the best dad.
MARK: It's not that I don't want to be one. I just always pictured it happening naturally.
TYLER: Why does it matter how you get the kid?
MARK: I can't help it if I'm traditional.
TYLER: I know heaps of traditional dads who botched it. Ours for one. And ask Amy to rate Paul. He's had a flock of kids without even trying. What would you prefer - to take what comes easy and miss out, or to go for what you really want?
Mark looks pensive.
Lassiter's Complex
Tyler is amused to find Gary, still in his boxers, hiding in the bushes, trying to get his attention.
TYLER: Lying down on the job, hey?
GARY: Just go and get me some clothes, will you?
TYLER: You dirty dog! Who's the lucky lady?
GARY: I'll tell you all about it over a nice cup of tea.
TYLER: I love tea! Hey, you're lucky I found you. Because if it was Mark, you'd be arrested.
GARY: I'm starting to think I'd prefer that. Can you just go home and get me some pants?!
TYLER: What, to cover up those cheeky boxers?
GARY: Mum got them for me!
TYLER: Your mum?!
GARY: Just go!! Run!
Tyler finally complies.
Erinsborough Hospital
Paul is visiting Steph; they're talking about Jacka. Steph says he must hate himself, and with good reason, and suspects Terese is feeling bad as well since she organised the balloon ride. Steph asks how things are between Paul and Terese.
PAUL: Business as usual. You know, I try to destroy her; she tries to destroy me.
STEPH: And when you're off the clock?
PAUL: I dunno. She was seeing some drip for a while, but I'm pretty sure that's over.
STEPH: So what did she say when you told her how you feel?
PAUL: ...
STEPH: Oh, you didn't (!)
PAUL: Oh, gosh, would you look at that? Visiting hours over already (!)
STEPH: What are you waiting for? You need to grow some and tell her how you feel.
PAUL: Well, I thought that if I left it long enough, she'd come to me.
Steph again urges him to tell Terese the truth, before they both miss out. Mark turns up, and Paul leaves them to it. Mark explains that he heard from Lucas that Steph met Adam, and asks why she didn't tell him.
STEPH: Probably because it was a crazy idea. He's a great kid, but I realised that it wasn't right to push it. Life's simple and happy for him, and I couldn't risk disrupting that. And the worst part is, I did it for the wrong reasons. It wasn't completely about him. If I'm honest, it was also to make sure that you still had kids in your life.
Moved by this, Mark kisses Steph.
MARK: I want to have kids with you.
STEPH: I do too. But we've run out of options.
MARK: Well, maybe we need to revisit those options.
Steph smiles.
Lassiter's Complex
David is leaving the hotel and sees Aaron walking by. He asks after his wrist. Aaron admits it's still sore to text, and he can't stand the female voice on his phone to use voice activation! David tells him there's a male setting!
AARON: Is that what you prefer?
DAVID: What do you mean?
AARON: You know at the hospital, when you were checking out my wrist - I could have sworn we had a spark.
DAVID: I'm sorry that you got that impression, but you're mistaken.
AARON: Don't worry - I'm not going to say anything to anyone. But, look, Amy's my best friend. And she thinks you like her. A lot.
DAVID: I do!
AARON: You know what I mean here! Come on, she's had it tough. I don't want to see her getting hurt again.
DAVID: I don't want that either.
AARON: Well, then, you have to be honest with yourself.
DAVID: You're not the first person to think that I was gay. I got it all through high school - it was a label people stuck on me because they didn't know how to deal with me. I was different. But I'm not gay, or even bi. I'm straight. So in terms of Amy, you've got nothing to be worried about.
David walks off, but Aaron still doesn't look convinced.
The Waterhole
Terese is doing some paperwork at the bar. Paul comes in and looks at her fondly - he appears about to follow Steph's advice.
PAUL: Terese?
TERESE: There's no point trying to annoy me, Paul. I'm in too good a mood.
PAUL: Really, why would that be?
TERESE: Sorry - I don't kiss and tell.
Tyler shows up, grinning. He tells Paul and Terese how he found Gary hiding in the bushes in his undies!
TYLER: Best walk of shame ever!
As Tyler walks off, Paul looks disgustedly at Terese. She shrugs, not denying anything! Paul walks out without another word, and Terese looks conflicted.
Later, Leo is working at a table when Paul shows up. He writes a number on a beermat and gives it to Leo, calling it a 'better offer' than what he's earning from Terese as a consultant.
LEO: What do you want me to do? Kill someone?
PAUL: No. I want you to stay on with Terese, when you're actually working for me. See, I'll pay you a weekly retainer to consult her business into the ground. The moment she files for bankruptcy, that's when you'll get this bonus.
Leo looks unsure.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sonya turns up with some chicken soup for Steph, and finds Toadie in reception. He tells her he's found some clarity on something that affects both of their lives, but he says he'll tell her about it later. They both go into Steph's room, and find Mark still there with her - both of them elated.
STEPH: I'm so excited, I really couldn't eat!
SONYA: Oh why, what's going on?
STEPH: We've decided to have a baby!
MARK: If the surrogacy offer still stands.
SONYA: Yes. Yes, it does! That's great!
Sonya's thrilled and rushes to hug them. Toadie smiles too, but his eyes tell a different story...
