Harold's
Harold's is closed, and Paige is wiping the counter. Jack comes in and tells her he's made his choice.
JACK: I choose you.
They start kissing passionately.
Then Jack wakes up.
Roll credits.
Church
Father Vincent is advising Jack and tells him that lust won't take him anywhere worth going. Jack insists it's not lust.
JACK: I love her. I could have a family with her.
FATHER VINCENT: This is not your path. The Church is your calling.
He insists there is no other alternative. Anything else is just selfish.
No 30
Sonya tells Mark she wants the person found. He says they'll do everything they can.
AARON: And there's nothing my brother likes better than chasing down bad guys.
SONYA: Which he wouldn't have to do if you and Karl hadn't posted that stupid video.
Aaron says he thought she supported the bike lanes, and she says that personally she does, but as Mayor, she can't be seen to be taking sides. Aaron points out that people know it's his and Karl's video, but Sonya says people know they are friends of hers, and now the video has been shared on the council's site.
SONYA: How am I supposed to call for a community debate and say I'm impartial?
Aaron and Mark point out there's a difference between posting a video and committing violence, but Sonya says that Nell was put in danger. She leaves the room, upset.
Harold's
Sonya comes in to pick Nell up, but she's busy making cupcakes with Paige. Lauren offers to make her some chai tea, while Amy and Steph sympathise. Steph is very keen on the idea of bike lanes, while Lauren is worried about the cost.
LAUREN: There are so many other things that need resources. The school, Blaze Outreach... Can we really add another one?
So completely unbiased there, Lauren. Jack arrives, wanting to talk to Paige. Lauren directs him into the kitchen to see Nell helping Paige decorate cupcakes. He looks on, smiling, then tells Paige he wants to talk to her about "us". She says she'll talk to him later.
Waterhole
Mark approaches a man (Clive West) and asks him to confirm he's the owner of a green 4WD. He doesn't want to answer, but as it's in the car park, he concedes the point. He also doesn't want to answer where he was the previous afternoon. Mark says he's got photos of the paint damage on the car (which Clive's not happy about) and CCTV pictures of him driving away from the scene of a crime.
CLIVE: Bully for you.
MARK: Mr West, you're going to be charged.
CLIVE: Charged, with what? Failing to give way to a nanny state?
MARK: Property damage. Dangerous driving.
CLIVE: Dangerous driving? What about the danger to our civil liberties?
MARK: Mr West...
CLIVE: What about a government that bows down to special interests, rather than looking after it's own citizens?
He says it's supposed to be a free country but there's always a new law, regulation, tax. Mark asks about the right of the little girl he would have mown down if he'd been a couple of minutes earlier. clive tells him to get out, and Mark says he'll be getting his summons in the mail.
Lassiter's rotunda
Jack tells a thrilled Paige that he wants to be with her. But he says it's not his decision.
PAIGE: But you just said.
JACK: I know, but...
PAIGE: No, Jack. There's no "but" at the end of that. I can't keep doing this with you any more. You want me. I want you.
JACK: It's not that simple. I also want to serve God.
They talk a bit more. Paige says she can't believe God would make him give up the love of a lifetime.
JACK: What is he is that love of my life?
PAIGE: Then you have to let me go.
No 30
Mark comes to tell Sonya that Clive will be charged. She tells him that everyone on the Council knows Clive. He's well known as a crank / nut-job. Mark frowns, and explains that he lost his wife and child 10 years ago, in a car accident caused by a cyclist. Sonya says she should get in touch with him. Mark advises against it, but Sonya still wants to go ahead.
Church
Father Vincent apologises to Jack for the way he spoke to him earlier. Jack says it's fine. He says that he loves God, but he also truly loves Paige, and he doesn't know which one God wants him to serve. He says every time he closes his eyes, he sees her face. Father Vincent says he would be wonderful for the parish, and advises him to pray.
Waterhole
Sonya approaches Clive and tells him that Karl and Aaron don't have her support. He scoffs and she says she wants a consultation before implementating anything.
SONYA: That's how a democracy should work.
CLIVE: "Should" being the operative word.
SONYA: Well, yeah. That's how I want Erinsborough to work. I don't want anyone to take anything into their own hands. Not Karl Kennedy and not you.
She tells him she can understand why he did what he did, adding that she lost her parents in a car accident. He's not impressed that she's been using government resources to dig into his life.
CLIVE: You don't know a thing about me, and your type never will.
SONYA: My type? I don't know...
CLIVE: Do-gooding panderers. Never take the time to really know what you're talking about. You jump in with other people's money and you make a mess of everything you touch.
Sonya says that isn't fair, and she just wanted to tell him she understands. He says she doesn't but she will.
CLIVE: You're going to regret crossing swords with me.
Harold's
Lauren comes into the kitchen and reminds Paige that she's off camping with Brad. Paige tells her that nothing's changed in the situation with Jack. She says she's going down to the food truck, because it feels like she's doing something good.
On her way out, Lauren tells Toadie she and Brad want to spend some quality time together.
TOADIE: Oh, well, nothing says "quality time" like a double sleeping bag, a roaring fire and a bag of marshmallows.
Lauren gets a text, and frowns.
TOADIE: You don't like marshmallows?
She tells him she's got an update from the Star, and she shows him the text.
No 30
Sonya is on the phone to Karl, telling him he has to remove the paint at his own cost, or the council will bill him to remove it. Toadie comes in with the paper. The front page has a story on "Mayor Rebecchi's war on motorists". Somebody has accused her of "grossly overstepping the boundaries of her office", "orchestrating traffic conspiracies" and "intimidation". On page 3, there's a photo of the "concerned citizen" - Clive West. Sonya explains to Toadie about his family, but he says that Sonya has to hit back. She insists that she won't be bullied, and they are going to have a proper consultation.
Waterhole
Aaron tells Mark that he was going to apologise to Toadie, but now he's avoiding the Rebecchis altogether. He never imagined painting a few lines would cause so much trouble.
AARON: You see, that's my problem, I just act. I never think about it.
MARK: Bit of a recurring theme, don't you think?
Mark says it's not all Aaron's fault: Karl's involved, and so's Clive, who looks for any excuse to act out. Aaron says he believes in the bike lines, but not if it's going to cause trouble for Sonya. Mark says that's part of the mayor's job. He advises Aaron he can continue the campaign, but think about how it affects other people.
Lassiter's rotunda / By the food truck / Church Garden
Jack is praying, saying he loves God and Paige.
JACK: She's kind. She's generous, she's thoughtful, she's a good person.
As he says this, we see scenes of Paige at the food truck, handing out food. We don't see scenes of her vandalising the coffee shop, handling stolen goods, TTEOLARCW™ in the well, being arrested on her wedding day, generally being stroppy...
He continues, saying that he and Father Vincent have done some brilliant work in his (God's) name. We see Father Vincent working in the garden. Jack carries on praying. Father Vincent stops and clutches his chest.
JACK: Just please give me a sign.
Church garden
Jack finds Father Vincent sprawled on the ground. He checks for a pulse, and shouts for help. Oh no... Karl is Not In This Episode™.
